Paramount & Nickelodeon Release First 'Wonder Park' Teaser Trailer & Photo [Updated]

Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies have released the first photo and teaser trailer for their upcoming animated family-friendly film, Wonder Park! The two-minute trailer shows a young girl discovering a theme park hidden in the woods and run by magical talking animals. Check out the US and UK versions of the trailer below!

“A lost land…a magical place just waiting for someone special to bring it back to life.”

In the trailer, set to an ethereal cover of Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World," a young girl (voiced by Brianna Denski) walks into a forest which reveals a magical place beyond the trees. The theme park comes back to life, with all of its inhabitants, including bears, monkeys and pigs, reprising their roles in the park. The also provides a few subtle flashbacks to 1994's A Troll in Central Park and Craig McCracken's Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.

“Wonderland is now open!” the monkey says.

The new two-minute trailer for the 2019 animated feature film doesn’t explain why the film’s called Wonder Park while the theme park revealed in the trees is named Wonderland. (Even the lead character in the trailer references Wonderland), however, this may be referenced in a future trailer or in the movie itself.

A tribute to creativity, Wonder Park tells the story of 10-year-old June, a wildly imaginative young girl who builds models of amusements parks with her mother. When her mother falls sick and has to go away for treatment. June packs away her models, and loses her sense of wonder. But one day in the woods, in a magical moment, she discovers a roller coaster car buried under ivy. It transports her to a fantasy wonder park, like the ones she used to build, populated by animals who were its past employees. But the park is broken down, abandoned and in a state of decay. With the park’s animals, June sets out to fix it and rediscover her sense of confidence and imagination, overcoming her fears.

Although it’s just a teaser, there’s definitely a magical vibe here. And the style and color of the film are absolutely breathtaking, playing a key role in the film's storytelling. “The biggest challenge in Wonder Park was to achieve a stylized look to a movie that could be considered more realistic. We tried to use conventions of real cinematography but in a stylized world,” Ilion Animation Studios VFX supervisor Javier Romero explained last month at Annecy. Ilion Animation Studios is the animation vendor and co-producer for Wonder Park along with Nickelodeon Movies.

Talking a bit more about the movie's documentary style, Ilion Animation's Juan Garcia González added about the relationship between June and her mother: “It’s very raw footage of normal people in normal situations."

“We are showing the loving relationship between a mother and a daughter, which is really cool for an animator. Given it’s a montage sequence, we could be very selective building the animation and creating that emotion,” Ilion Animation Studios director Javier Abad added, referencing an emotional montage that depicts June's mother dealing with her sickness (shown at Annecy).

The voice talent includes Matthew Broderick (Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Rules Don’t Apply, The Producers) as Dad, Jennifer Garner (Nine Lives, The Tribes of Palos Verdes) as Mom, Kenan Thompson (All That, Kenan & Kel, Good Burger, SNL) as Gus, Ken Jeong (Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, Bob’s Burgers) as Cooper, Mila Kunis (Family Guy, A Bad Moms Christmas) as Greta, John Oliver (The Daily Show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, live-action Lion King) as Steve, Sofia Mali as Young June, Brianna Denski (Momsters: When Moms Go Bad) as June, Oev Michael Urbas as Banky, Norbert Leo Butz (Bloodline) as Peanut, Kate McGregor-Stewart as Aunt Albertine, Kevin Chamberlin as Uncle Tony, Kath Soucie (Rugrats, Hey Arnold!) as Bus Counselor Shannon, and Noen Perez as Chatty Kid. Jeffrey Tambor, who in recent months has been accused of harassment, was replaced on the animated offering last month. He was replaced by Ken Hudson Campbell, who voiced Boomer the Bear.

The PG-rated film was written by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows) from a story by Applebaum, Nemec, and Robert Gordon. Appelbaum, Nemec, and Kendra Haaland served as producers, with Karen Rosenfelt and Don Hahn executive producing. The studio hasn’t credited the film to a director after the original helmer, first-time director Dylan Brown, was fired in January 2018 following complaints of inappropriate and unwanted conduct.

Update (7/12): The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that David Feiss is the new director Wonder Park.

The movie is being produced by Paramount Animation, Nickelodeon Movies and Ilion Animation Studios, and begun production back in 2014 under the original title Amusement Park. The film recently made a splash at Annecy 2018 in France.
