Former NASA Astronaut Danny Olivas to be Contestant on Nickelodeon's 'Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?'

Former NASA astronaut and El Pasoan Danny Olivas, an UTEP alumnus, has several degrees, including a doctorate in mechanical engineering. And he's flown on two space shuttle missions.

But is he smarter than a fifth-grader?

A promotional clip Nickelodeon's reimagined iconic family game show, Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader, hosted by professional wrestler John Cena, features Olivas prominently identifying himself as a contestant, an astronaut contestant.

The family game show reboot premiered Monday, June 10, 2019. Olivas is set to appear on the show in the episode premiering Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nick USA.

Following the original premise, the new Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader series, features kids helping adult contestants put their knowledge to the test with questions taken directly from an elementary school curriculum. Joining Cena, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, is a rotating cast of 12 brainy fifth graders: Amira from Orlando, Fla.; Chloe from Queens, N.Y.; Colin from Dallas; Cooper from Porter Ranch, Calif.; Isabella from St. Cloud, Fla.; Jamir from Atlanta; Mia from New Orleans; Nick from Broomall, Pa.; Patrick from Lehigh Valley, Pa.; Quinne from Los Angeles; Saya from Peachtree City, Ga.; and Tristan from Aurora, Ill.

Olivas, an is currently director of space initiatives at the University of Texas at El Paso.
