In the brand-new The Substitute episode "Rico & Raini Rodriguez", actor Rico Rodriguez (Modern Family) goes undercover as The Substitute, while his sister Raini Rodriguez pulls the string behind the scene. Rico plays a wacky neat freak, an intense karate instructor, and a middle school sub who thinks he’s teaching kindergarteners! (#106)

In each episode of The Substitute, celebrities are transformed into completely unrecognizable characters using full costumes and prosthetics to hide their identities to prank students.

The Substitute features celebrities who are transformed by a team of Hollywood special effects artists to go undercover as a substitute, surprising unsuspecting kids in schools, camps and other locations. After a day full of ridiculous mayhem, the substitute reveals themselves and the featured school receives a donation for $25,000.


Additional guest stars set to appear in upcoming episodes of The Substitute are Asher Angel, Shaun White, JoJo Siwa, Johnny Orlando, Kel Mitchell, and Cooper Barnes. The season previewed in October with guest star and international superstar John Cena, and was followed by a holiday-themed episode guest starring Grammy Award-winning artist and performer NE-YO in November. The series premiered on Friday, January 31, 2020 with WWE Superstars The Bella Twins.

The Substitute is produced by Industrial Media’s The Intellectual Property Corporation. Eli Holzman, Aaron Saidman and Todd Hurvitz (Punk’d), serve as executive producers, with Hurvitz also serving as the showrunner. Jessica Brown, Nickelodeon’s Vice President of Current Series, also serves as an executive producer. Production of The Substitute for Nickelodeon is overseen by Rob Bagshaw, Executive Vice President, Unscripted Content.

Rico Rodriguez Goes Undercover With Help From Sister Raini In ‘The Substitute’

Get ready to LOL because Rico and Raini Rodriguez are guest stars on Friday’s episode of Nickelodeon’s The Substitute! Using full costumes and prosthetics to hide his identity, Rico transformed himself into three unrecognizable characters and went undercover at Lewis Elementary in Downey, CA. The actor even got some extra help from his sister Raini, who was directing him from the control room the entire time.

In our exclusive first look of the upcoming episode, Rico pretended to be a wacky neat freak who started destroying things in the classroom. Later in the episode, he also played an intense karate instructor and a middle school substitute who thought he was teaching kindergarteners!

Rico and Raini’s episode of The Substitute airs Friday, February 7 at 8:00 P.M. (EST/PST) on Nickelodeon. After that, new episodes will air on Saturdays at 9 P.M. (EST/PST) on Nickelodeon, starting with guest star Asher Angel this Saturday.

Lewis Elementary stars in Nickelodeon TV show

DOWNEY - Lewis Elementary School will be featured on an episode of Nickelodeon’s “The Substitute” on Friday, Feb. 7. The episode is scheduled to air at 7:30 p.m.

Being featured in the fourth episode of the first season of this television series, crewmembers from Nickelodeon visited Downey Unified in October to film this surprise.

Approximately 30 students will be featured in this episode where actor Rico Rodriguez from “Modern Family” visits the Lewis campus to surprise students.

To top off the excitement of their celebrity guest, Rodriguez then unveiled a donation that will be used in support of Lewis Elementary School students and programs.

Depending on the cable provider, this episode will be aired Friday evening but will also be available online through various platforms.

“We would like to thank Nickelodeon and their partners for selecting us for this amazing opportunity,” said Lewis Elementary School Principal Allison Box.

“The Substitute” is a hidden camera show that features celebrities who go undercover as professionals in various fields, surprising unsuspecting kids in schools, camps and other locations.

Transformed by a team of special effects artists, the celebrities hide their true identities as they attempt to fool unsuspecting youngsters. During the reveal of a celebrity, a $25,000 donation is made to the organization.
