But under the guidance of grown up lifeguards Bondi, Sandy and Big Trev, they’re gaining imperative water safety skills that will help keep themselves and other beachgoers safe all summer. Kangaroo Beach is created by Tim Bain (Digby Dragon, Kuu Kuu Harajuku, Thomas & Friends, PJ Masks, Bluey, Fireman Sam), written by Bain, Charlotte Rose Hamlyn, Simon Dodd, and Samantha Carroll, and directed by David Webster. Celine Goetz serves as a producer, with Patrick Egerton serving as the executive producer. The series is produced by Cheeky Little Media.

The series made its world premiere on ABC Kids in Australia. The series enjoyed 7.5 million views in its first run and scored the #1 spot for catch-up views following its Boxing Day 2020 premiere – beating all kids and adult shows across all networks.

Season one has 26 11-minute episodes. A new special is now in production, as well as toy and clothing deals. Zoggs are releasing a swimwear range and Pan MacMillan are publishing a book series.

Bruce “Hoppo” Hopkins of Bondi Rescue fame serves as the show’s water safety consultant. One day, he bundled up the writing team and – under supervision – got them to enter a rip. “It was real method writing,” Bain told The Sydney Morning Herald. “A real wake-up call. A big, key message on the show is stay calm and float. Especially in a rip.”

Bain said the time he spent working on Fireman Sam had taught him that children’s TV can save lives, as well as entertain.

“It was always really inspirational when we would get letters from families,” he said. “Kids were using what they’d learned from the show in real-life emergencies. You want to offer that message inside a package of warm, relatable characters.”
