Nick Partners With Summit Resources International To Open Nickelodeon Stores Internationally

The entertainment industry news magazine The Hollywood Reporter is reporting the very exciting Nickelodeon International News in the following article that Viacom International Media Networks recently celebrated the opening of the first standalone Nickelodeon retail store in Panama City, the capital city of the Latin American country Republic of Panama, in November 2013!

Additionally, THR is reporting that VIMN is also planning to open more Nickelodeon-branded stores in the near future, including a second one in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia set to open in late April 2014.

They are the first in a series of planned Nick store launches in emerging markets, including a second Panama store set to open in June 2014, a venue in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia set to open in September 2014 and a Nickelodeon Store scheduled to open in Moscow in 2015.

Taking popular content and characters into international markets and to new platforms and venues has been a growth area for Hollywood giants on the hunt for new revenue sources amid a mature core market in the U.S.

And Viacom International Media Networks sees the move into the branded stores business, something Walt Disney has done with its Disney Stores since 1987, as a key growth opportunity.

Viacom is making a small start with a focus on international markets though and expectations to grow the Nickelodeon store base over the coming years.

Viacom's approach differs from Disney's business model though. For example, there are currently no plans for standalone Nickelodeon Stores in the U.S. There are around 200 Disney Store locations in North America, around 40 in Japan and around 100 in Europe, according to the company's web site.

Viacom's international networks arm is also taking a different approach in other areas. Instead of operating stores itself, the company has teamed with Orlando-based retail expert Summit Resources International, which controls the stores and has a local partner operating them. Nickelodeon gets paid via a licensing deal that gives it a royalty percentage of sales and has the final creative approval on all products offered in the stores. The exact financial details haven't been disclosed.

Nick sees the stores as additive to its consumer products offers on shelves of retail chains that have long partnered with the brand.

Compared with some competitors, the Nickelodeon Store positioning emphasizes a philosophy of "kids first, but not kids only."

In line with that, the products available in stores are for kids and adults of all ages and cover such categories as apparel, accessories, gift and novelty items, home and tableware products and toys.

Why Panama first? "Panama has a real appetite for our brand, and SRI knows the market well," explains Ron Johnson, Executive Vice President of consumer products at VIMN.

Global retail chains, including Macy's and Zara, have also used Panama as a test market for new concepts.

As for Russia and the Mideast, Ruth Crowley, EVP of business development at Summit Resources, explains: "In Russia, the Nick properties are hugely popular. And there is nothing like this in the Middle East. We will be in brand new designer malls there."

If all goes well, the stores business could reach critical financial mass in a few years. "Viacom is focused on international growth, and within international consumer products are a key focus," explained Johnson. "So, the stores strategically fit. They won't contribute a material dollar amount for a few years, but the first store in Panama ‎has been doing incredibly well and exceeded expectations. We even see an opportunity to do this kind of thing for other brands, such as MTV.":
Nickelodeon Opens First Retail Store — in Panama

Unlike Disney, which has some 340 stores mostly in North America, Viacom has no plans for Nick stores in the U.S. as it instead focuses on emerging markets.

A version of this story first appeared in the April 11 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

Kids who can't get enough of SpongeBob or Dora the Explorer can now visit the Nickelodeon Store ... in Panama.

Entertainment conglomerate Viacom's Viacom International Media Networks unit celebrated the opening of the first Nickelodeon retail store in the Latin American country's capital of Panama City in November, with a second one set to follow in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in late April.

They are the first in a series of planned Nick store launches in emerging markets, including a second Panama store set to open in June, a venue in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia set to open in September and one in Moscow in 2015.

Taking popular content and characters into international markets and to new platforms and venues has been a growth area for Hollywood giants on the hunt for new revenue sources amid a mature core market in the U.S.

Nickelodeon has final creative approval on all products offered in the stores.

Nick sees the stores as additive to its consumer products offers on shelves of retail chains that have long partnered with the firm.

"Our success at retail with licensed products has been great," explains Ron Johnson, executive vp of consumer products at VIMN. "The next logical step are Nickelodeon branded stores, which let fans really live the Nick lifestyle. We see stores as a growth vehicle and an opportunity to grow the brand in underserved markets."

Nickelodeon is "an incredibly widely recognized global brand," reaching around 500 million households in more than 130 territories via more than 70 local channels or branded programming blocks, he said.

Compared with some competitors, the Nickelodeon Store positioning emphasizes "kids first, but not kids only," Johnson explained. "We have a more than 30 year-old brand, so there are a lot of young parents who grew up with Nick, which gives us broad appeal for the whole family."

In line with that, the products available in stores are for kids and adults of all ages and cover such categories as apparel, accessories, gift and novelty items, home and tableware products and toys.

Why Panama first? "Panama has a real appetite for our brand, and SRI knows the market well," said Johnson.

Global retail chains, including Macy's and Zara, have also used Panama as a test market for new concepts.

"Panama has a diverse customer base. It's very international, so you can test new things," said Ruth Crowley, executive vp of business development at Summit Resources. "Our Nick store is in one of the best malls and one of the best locations there. And in retail, one thing is always key: location, location, location."

As for Russia and the Mideast, Crowley said: "In Russia, the Nick properties are hugely popular. And there is nothing like this in the Middle East. We will be in brand new designer malls there."

Asked about competition with Disney and other stores, Johnson said: "When you think about retail, your competition is really everybody else in retail. You fight for foot traffic. So, we are going to create products that balance price and quality and ensure the Nick experience."

Added Crowley: "Disney is very different to me. It is about princesses and heroes. Nick is about all these characters that have cross-age appeal and are family oriented."

Johnson said Nick consumer products will remain in other retail stores though. "The branded stores are about a brand experience. Other retailers provide more of an item experience," he explained. "The bulk of our consumer products business will still be with traditional retailers. But the product lines will be differentiated, and a store is great halo brand marketing for us for different markets."

"Extending the Nick brand and its characters to a retail store absolutely makes sense, especially internationally, because overseas is a big growth objective for the company" and all Hollywood giants, said Janney Montgomery Scott analyst Tony Wible, describing it as a high-margin business opportunity. "People will appreciate that they are looking to monetize their brands outside their primary vehicle of TV."

We even see an opportunity to do this kind of thing for other brands, such as MTV."

"Sam & Cat" To Go Into Production Hiatus Next Week; Decision On Season Two Still To Be Made

UPDATE (4/3): Unfortunately, "Sam & Cat" has now been put on a "Permanent Hiatus", with everyone on the crew let go, except for those working in post-production (the staff who edit each episode together to be broadcast on-air). Full info.

The entertainment news website Deadline.com is reporting the news in the following article that future of Nickelodeon's hit original comedy series "Sam & Cat" is currently unknown amidst behind-the-scenes drama at the show.

Nickelodeon's comedy "Sam & Cat" has been a runaway success by any measure. The series, from proven hitmaker Dan Schneider, brought together two popular characters from two of Dan's popular Nick series – Sam Puckett from "iCarly" and Cat Valentine from "Victorious" — played by two of Nickelodeon's best-known stars and best friends, Jennette McCurdy and Ariana Grande, respectively. "Sam & Cat" has been a ratings hit for Nickelodeon, quickly becoming Nickelodeon's highest-rated series. In July 2013, only a month into "Sam & Cat"'s run, Nick doubled its freshman order from 20 to 40 episodes. The shows hour-long special on Saturday 18th January 2014, "#TheKillerTunaJump: #Freddie #Jade #Robbie", in which Jennette and Ariana reunited their former "iCarly" and "Victorious" co-stars Nathan Kress, Matt Bennett and Elizabeth Gillies, who reprised their characters from "iCarly" and "VICTORiOUS" - Freddie Benson, Robbie Shapiro and Jade West, respectively - drew 4.8 million total viewers and ranked as Nick USA's highest-rated telecast with kids 6-11 in two years.

But as "Sam & Cat" is wrapping production on its 40-episode first season, there is currently no confirmation on the reported Season 2 - which is a very unusual development for such a successful series. There has also been talk about discord on the set.

Deadline is reporting that things came to a head last week when the show came close to a shutdown. Then this past weekend, McCurdy publicly accused Nickelodeon of "unfair treatment". She also fueled speculation about a rift with longtime best friend Grande by un-following Grande on social media and not joining her co-star at Nickelodeon's 27th Annual Kids Choice Awards, where both were nominated for favorite TV actress. However, Deadline is reporting that sources close to the situation note that McCurdy and Grande are still getting along 'Just Fine'.

"Sam & Cat" was a big winner, winning Favorite TV Show, Aussies' Fave Nick Show, Favorite TV actress (Grande) and Schneider receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award. McCurdy took to Twitter to explain her absence from the awards show, which she had been scheduled to attend.

The behind-the-scenes issues have complicated Nickelodeon's decision how to proceed with the series. Deadline reports there is a Season 2 production start date penciled in for later this year (2014), but a renewal decision still needs to be made by Nickelodeon executives. "We are wrapping up what was an unusually long production cycle of "Sam & Cat", and everyone is understandably tired," Nickelodeon said in a statement. "We are going into our production hiatus next week which will give everyone on the show a much needed rest." While Nick bosses and fans still hope for another season of "Sam & Cat", they also have lined up potential reinforcements, green-lighting three new live-action comedies earlier this month, including the 20-episode "Henry Danger" from Schneider:
Future Of Nickelodeon Series ‘Sam & Cat’ In Limbo Amidst Behind-The-Scenes Drama

Nickelodeon‘s comedy Sam & Cat has been a runaway success by any measure. The series, from proven hitmaker Dan Schneider, brought together two popular characters from two popular Nick series – iCarly’s Sam Puckett and Victorious‘ Cat Valentine — played by two of the network’s best-known stars and best friends, Jennette McCurdy and Ariana Grande, respectively. The series has been a ratings hit, quickly becoming Nickelodeon’s highest-rated series. In July, only a month into Sam & Cat’s run, Nick doubled its freshman order from 20 to 40 episodes. Its hourlong January 18 episode drew 4.8 million total viewers and ranked as Nick’s highest-rated telecast with kids 6-11 in two years.

But as Sam & Cat is wrapping production on its 40-episode first season, there is no word on Season 2 — a very unusual development for such a successful series. There has been talk about discord on the set, with emotions running high and McCurdy and Grande sometimes showing up late. The grueling, 40-episode shoot has been taxing on everyone. Additionally, McCurdy had been going through a difficult time in her personal life for the past six months and recently had to deal with the leak of racy photos, while Grande’s music career has taken off a big time. Both have been at Nickelodeon for a long time, McCurdy for more than seven years and Grande for more than four. Both are entering adulthood, and word is both feel constrained at kids-focused Nickelodeon and are ready to move on.

I hear things came to a head last week when the show came close to a shutdown. Then this past weekend, McCurdy publicly accused Nickelodeon of unfair treatment. She also fueled speculation about a rift with longtime best friend Grande by un-following Grande on social media and not joining her co-star at Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards, where both were nominated for favorite TV actress. (Sources close to the situation note that McCurdy and Grande are still getting along fine.) Sam & Cat was a big winner, taking Favorite TV Show, Favorite TV actress (Grande) and Schneider receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award. McCurdy took to Twitter to explain her absence from the awards show, which she had been scheduled to attend. “I was put in an uncomfortable, compromising, unfair situation (many of you have guessed what it is) and I had to look out for me,” she wrote. “I chose to not go because sticking up for what is right and what is fair is what my mom taught me is ALWAYS the most important thing. I want to thank those of you who have reached out with kind words of support, McCurdians and Arianators alike. No matter who or what you support, I believe in supporting fairness first.” She later clarified her decision to boycott the awards had nothing to do with the release of the photos. “It has to do with how Nickelodeon treated me,” she said. “That’s all.”

The behind-the-scenes issues have complicated Nickelodeon’s decision how to proceed with the series. I hear there is a Season 2 production start date penciled in for later this year, but a renewal decision still appears to be a toss-up. “We are wrapping up what was an unusually long production cycle of Sam & Cat, and everyone is understandably tired,” the network said in a statement. “We are going into our production hiatus next week which will give everyone on the show a much needed rest.” While Nick brass still hope for another season of Sam & Cat, they also have lined up potential reinforcements, greenlighting three new live-action comedies earlier this month, including the 20-episode Henry Danger from Schneider.
