Animation Guild Ratifies New Nickelodeon Animation Contracts

Members of the Animation Guild, IATSE Local 839, have voted overwhelmingly to ratify a new pair of Nickelodeon contracts covering a wide range of animation artists, writers, and technicians working in computer graphics and traditional 2D animation.

The Nickelodeon agreements include all the gains that were negotiated as part of the union’s master agreement last year, plus several provisions specifically for Nickelodeon animation workers.

The new Nickelodeon contracts will be retroactive to August 1, 2018, and run through July 31, 2021.

“We congratulate all members working at Nickelodeon on the approval of these agreements and we look forward to building on these gains in the future,” the guild said in a posting on its website. “Thank you to all members that participated – your involvement and engagement is key to our continued success.”

From animationguild.org:

Nickelodeon Contract Ratification

On May 29th, Animation Guild members working at Nickelodeon voted overwhelmingly to ratify the 2018-2021 Nickelodeon 2D and Nickelodeon CG agreements. Generally, these agreements will be in effect from August 1, 2018 through and including July 31, 2021. We congratulate all members working at Nickelodeon on the approval of these agreements and we look forward to building on these gains in the future. Thank you to all members that participated – your involvement and engagement is key to our continued success. Thank you, members!

Background: In 2018, the agreement between Nickelodeon and The Animation Guild reached the end of it’s term. The Animation Guild formed a negotiation committee made up of members working at Nickelodeon to renegotiate the agreement. The committee met with representatives from the studio over a few months, and has an agreement to present to the members working at the studio for ratification. The committee is proud of the work that was done and recommends the membership vote to approve the new agreement.

Some of what was achieved is:

  • All of the gains from the 2018-2021 TAG Master Agreement (read about those negotiations here)
  • Nickelodeon provides 10 paid holidays annually and sets the date for those holidays each year.
  • Renaming of “Texture Artist” and “Lead Texture Artist” to “Look Development Artist” and “Lead Look Development Artist” respectively.
  • Asset Finaler wage was increased 20% before the wage increases, and simplified to Journey level only.

Please feel free to review the two Memorandum of Agreements that detail the changes that were achieved linked [below].

Kenan Thompson & Kel Mitchell Want Amanda Bynes to Make a Cameo on ‘All That’ Reboot

That’s me! In February, Nickelodeon announced that it would be reviving several throwback television shows, including All That. Actor Kenan Thompson, who got his start on the ‘90s sketch-comedy series, is set to executive produce the reboot — and he wants one very special former cast member to be a part of it.

Update (6/1) - Kenan's co-star Kel Mitchell has also expressed interest in Amanda Bynes making a cameo on the revived All That series, premiering Saturday, June 15, at 8:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon USA! Scroll down for details!

“I would love [for Amanda Bynes to make a cameo],” Thompson, 40, told Us Weekly whilst celebrating the finale of the Ultimate Comedy Experience — Road to NYC in New York City on Sunday, April 14. “We would all love it, of course, but it would be up to her.”

The Saturday Night Live star admitted that he has not kept in touch with Bynes, 33, over the years, but has has spoken to several All That stars who will likely be part of the revival. He explained, “I’ve been in touch with Josh [Server] and Kel [Mitchell], for sure. And I know that Lori Beth [Denberg] is down. … I’m hearing Katrina [Johnson] … Angelique [Bates] … [and] Alisa [Reyes] is down, so pretty much the original seven. And then everybody else, we would love to just have them come and show their love and pass the torch to this new casting.”

Kenan Thompson as Pierre Escargot on All That

As for what people can expect from the upcoming comedy series, which is set to premiere this summer? “They found seven awesome kids,” the longest-ever serving SNL cast member noted. “Some are going to do impressions, some will do voices, some of them are just going to be their crazy selves.”

All That ran on Nickelodeon from 1994 to 2005 and helped several young stars, including Thompson and Bynes, get their start in comedy. The Hairspray actress made her first appearance on the small-screen hit in November 1996 and her last in May 2002.

Amanda Bynes in The First “Ask Ashley” Ever All That

Bynes was a regular on the show and became known for starring in the “Ask Ashley” sketch, in which she played a seemingly sweet little girl who offered advice from her bedroom. “That’s me,” she would quip before angrily answering questions that were submitted from viewers. Following her success on All That, Nickelodeon gave the She's the Man star her own sketch show, The Amanda Show, which aired from 1999 to 2002.

Update (6/1) - Via US Weekly:

Kel Mitchell Has ‘Hope’ Amanda Bynes Will Return for Nickelodeon’s ‘All That’ Reboot: She Would Be ‘Great’

Amanda, please! Kel Mitchell revealed Amanda Bynes is welcome to make a guest appearance on the upcoming All That reboot.

When Us Weekly caught up with Mitchell, the comedic actor detailed what fans can expect with Nickelodeon’s upcoming revival. Naturally, fans have been wondering which former stars may return, including the What I Like About You alum. The Good Burger alum even expressed his interest in seeing Bynes return to the small screen.

“Yes, yes. That’s going to happen. I mean, I hope it happens. You know what I mean?” Mitchell, 40, exclusively told Us. “I want everybody to come through. You know what I mean? I think she would do a great job, you know?”

Us previously spoke with Mitchell’s Kenan & Kel costar, Kenan Thompson, in April about the possibility of Bynes, 33, returning to her roots. Like his pal, the Saturday Night Live star shared his excitement over a potential cameo from the Easy A actress.

“I would love [for Amanda Bynes to make a cameo],” Thompson, 40, told Us at the finale event for Ultimate Comedy Experience — Road to NYC in New York City. “We would all love it, of course, but it would be up to her.”

Us reported in March that Bynes entered rehab in January after facing mental health struggles, which an insider said was “the result of feeling pressure of being back in the spotlight after her Paper magazine cover.” The source also said she is working with counselors and addiction specialists to improve.

All That initially ran on Nickelodeon from 1994 to 2000 before being relaunched in 2002 and concluding again in 2005. A revival of the beloved ‘90s classic was announced in February. Mitchell and Thompson are on board as executive producers and original cast members Lori Beth and Josh Server will be back for cameos.

Nick Cannon and Jamie Lynn Spears are also apart of the sketch series’ star-studded alumni. While neither are confirmed to make a guest appearance, Mitchell did reveal that one of the casted newcomers “does a really great Nick Cannon impersonation, so it’s really funny.”

“I love to have him do it, and then Nick Cannon comes up behind him or something,” he said. “That’d be hilarious.”

Ryan Alessi, Reece Caddell, Gabrielle Green, Kate Godfrey, Nathan Janak, Lex Lumpkin and Chinguun Sergelen are the young actors set to star in Nickelodeon’s All That revival. Ahead of the show’s premiere, Mitchell told Us he wants the kids to “enjoy one another all together” and he does not “want any of them doing competing against each other.”

All That premieres on Nickelodeon on Saturday, June 15, at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Justin Long Turned Down a Chance To Replace Steve Burns from 'Blue's Clues'

Earlier this week, Nickelodeon released the first trailer for the network’s upcoming revivial of the classic ’90s preschool series, Blue Clues. Those who watched while coming of age in the ’90s may recognize a few familiar faces from the reboot, like Magenta and the Felt Friends, as well as one unfamiliar face: That of Joshua Dela Cruz, who joins the show as the new host of Blues Clues and You. Previous to this gig, Dela Cruz was in the ensemble of the Broadway production of Aladdin and an understudy for the title role.

Dela Cruz will serve as the third host of the series, following in the footsteps of Steve Burns, who left the series in 2002 and Donovan Patton, who remained on until the original series ended in 2006. Of course, most folks know that Steve Burns left the series in 2002 basically because he was getting older, losing his hair very fast, and didn’t want to go bald in front of a children’s television audience (in fact, he shaved his head the day after he departed from the series). Steve is doing fine, however, tweeting about his hatred of WalMart and, uh, challenging John Cena to fights (Steve would win, btw).

What many people don’t realize, however, is that before Donovan Patton replaced Steve, there was an extensive audition process to find a replacement. Among those who auditioned was Dax Shepard before landing his gig on Punk’d with Ashton Kutcher. However, it was Justin Long who was actually offered the job to potentially replace Steve, and given his similarities to Steve, it would have been perfect casting. Interestingly, Long — who was a struggling actor at the time — managed to finagle the offer into an eventual career.

At the time, Justin Long could not secure an agent. However, once he was offered a holding contract to potentially replace Steve, he started calling around and asking for an agent to help him negotiate the gig — a three-month holding contract for $15,000. It was a fortune for Long at the time, because he was delivering pizzas, and once disinterested agents learned that Long needed to negotiate a contract, at least one became eager to sign him.

However, once Long secured an agent — as he explained recently to Dax Shepard on the Armchair Expert podcast — he was excited because he “understood what a big deal that was.” In fact, it was such a big deal to have an agent that he actually turned down the contract, reasoning that he got what he needed out of being offered the part. He eventually opted, instead, to take a job on a show he had auditioned for called Stuckeyville. That show would later be renamed Ed, which he starred in for four years.

“It was really one of the only ballsy moves” Long had ever made in his career, he explained to Shepard. Ed, in turn, led him toward roles in the movies such as Jeepers Creepers and its sequel (and later Dodgeball). He also had lengthy relationship with his Going the Distance co-star, Drew Barrymore.

Speaking of Barrymore, on that same Dax Shepard podcast, Long also shares a story about filming Youth in Revolt out in Michigan, getting mixed up with some sketchy townies, jumping out of a moving car at 3 a.m., having his foot run over by that car, getting dumped by Drew Barrymore two days later, and showing up for a Mac commercial with a busted leg.

That, obviously, is not behavior becoming of a Nickelodeon kid’s show host. So, maybe Blue’s Clues dodged a bullet.

Blue's Clues & You premieres this November on Nickelodeon! Blue will also be featured in Nick Jr. Live! "Move To The Music", Nickelodeon's upcoming U.S. theatrical tour, kicking off fall 2019.
