CBS All Access Adds 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'

CBS All Access, CBS’ digital subscription video on-demand and live streaming service, has added all three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender! Yip yip!

The news follows Netflix adding Nickelodeon's iconic animated series to its programming in mid-May, where it instantly became the platform's top title.

The news also follows ViacomCBS announcing plans to bulk up the service, including titles from Nickelodeon.

Avatar: The Last Airbender joins its spin-off series The Legend of Korra, which was added to CBS All Access in January, along with Danny Phantom and Sam & Cat. Also available on the service are the Nickelodeon Movies Harriet The Spy, Rugrats Go Wild, The Adventures of Tintin, Mad Hot Ballroom, and Turtle Power: The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

CBS All Access currently runs customers $5.99 per month for ad-supported streaming and $9.99 for ad-free streaming.

2020 marks the 15th anniversary of Avatar: The Last Airbender’s debut on Nickelodeon.

Created by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko and airing between 2005 and 2008, the critically-acclaimed Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in world people can manipulate the elements of Earth, Water, Fire, and Air, and they lived peacefully in different regions until one of the nations started a world war. One master who can manipulate all four elements, dubbed the "Avatar," had been able to prevent this war, but disappeared soon after. 100 years later, a new Avatar named Aang awakens and sets out on a journey to master all the elements in order to bring peace to the land once more by defeating Fire Lord Ozai and ending the destructive war with the Fire Nation.

The series managed to be such a hit with fans by combining amazing animated action set pieces with three dimensional interesting characters set in this magical fantasy world.

The animated series originally aired for 61 episodes over three seasons ("Books") originally on Nickelodeon, where it began in February 2005 and concluded in July 2008. The series was nominated for—and won—Annie Awards, Genesis Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Peabody Award.

Its success led to the creation of adjacent consumer products, including video games, and a follow-up series, The Legend of Korra, that returned to the world of Avatar years after Aang’s death to follow Korra, his successor as Avatar. That series ran between 2012-2014. In 2010, the series got its first feature-length film, The Last Airbender.

The stories of both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra have since continued on in graphic novel series.

Netflix will be putting out an Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series from original creators DiMartino and Konietzko sometime in the future, with filming set to begin this year. The streaming giant has said that it plans to stay true to the location and “background heritage” of the animated series after the 2010 film failed to do so.

Paramount Home Entertainment and Nickelodeon Home Entertainment released the Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Complete Series 15th Anniversary Limited Edition Steelbook Collection in February 2020.

Nickelodeon Reportedly Closing In on Comic Strip ‘Phoebe And Her Unicorn’ as Potential Multi-Franchise

Nickelodeon has reportedly won the rights in a competitive situation to Dana Simpson’s comic strip Phoebe and Her Unicorn, a property that the ViacomCBS studio is eyeing as a multi-platform franchise across an TV animated series, movies and more. The final deal points are being hammered out at this moment, Deadline has heard.

The daily comic strip initially launched on Universal Uclick’s GoComics website in 2012 before it launched in 100 newspapers in 2015. Phoebe and her Unicorn follows 9-year-old Phoebe Howell, a girl in the fourth grade, who deals with childhood challenges alongside her unicorn Marigold, friend Max and enemy Dakota. Phoebe meets Marigold after skipping a rock across a pond, accidentally hitting the unicorn in the face. Freed from her own reflection, the unicorn—named Marigold Heavenly Nostrils—gives Phoebe one wish, which she decides to use by making the unicorn her best friend. Marigold has magical powers, i.e. she can divert or redirect rain and send text messages and broadcast a Wi-Fi hotspot through her horn. Her most highly coveted power though is her “Shield of Boringness” spell, which causes humans to view her as nothing out of the ordinary and allows her to interact with them on a daily basis.

Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment are partnering with Bridget McMeel of Andrews McMeel Entertainment to produce Phoebe and Her Unicorn content. Lee brought the project into Darlene Caamaño Loquet, Senior Vice President (SVP) of Nickelodeon Movies, who’ll over the project for Nickelodeon. Roy and Yoon will oversee development.

Fred Nelson and Matt Sheppo will oversee Phoebe and Her Unicorn for Andrews McMeel Entertainment (AME), the entertainment unit of Andrews McMeel Universal.

Last year, Nickelodeon had the Paramount release Dora and the Lost City of Gold based on their 20-year TV cartoon IP Dora the Explorer. The movie grossed $120.6M off a $49M production cost and has been heralded by Paramount CEO Jim Gianopulos as a profitable movie for the studio. Paramount will be releasing The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, the third theatrical film inspired by Nickelodeon's long-running SpongeBob SquarePants franchise, on Friday, Aug. 7.

Nickelodeon is also developing an animated series based on the Big Nate children's books, and recently acquired the Garfield portfolio.
