Seth Rogen Unveils Release Date for New 'TMNT' Movie

The world’s most fearsome fighting team began as a joke in 1983, but the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have had serious success ever since. Countless comic books, television shows, films, and video games have shown the group’s lasting appeal. So it’s no surprise they’re gearing up for another big screen adventure. Nickelodeon is teaming up with Seth Rogen on an all-new CG-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.

Nickelodeon first announced it is partnering with Point Grey Pictures’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver to develop a new CG-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film in June 2020. It will also be Nickelodeon Animation Studio’s first-ever CG theatrical release. Jeff Rowe (Gravity Falls, Connected, Disenchantment) will direct. Brendan O’Brian (Neighbors, Sorority Rising) will write the script. Nickelodeon’s Executive Vice President Ramsey Naito will lead the production for Nickelodeon, alongside Point Grey Pictures’s Josh Fagen. Paramount Pictures will distribute the film globally.

“Adding Seth, Evan and James’ genius to the humor and action that’s already an integral part of TMNT is going to make this a next-level reinvention of the property,” said Brian Robbins, President, Kids & Family for ViacomCBS, in a statement.

The new movie will arrive in theatres on August 11, 2023 according to a tweet from Rogen:

It’s full of scribbled notes from Leonardo. There were no other details provided aside from some doodling in the margins of the notes, which featured words like honor, loyalty and discipline which are staples of the Turtles mythology. There’s also a note to “apologize to April,” a nod to the journalist who helps the quartet fight crime.

Plot details for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remain under wraps, but Rogen previously told Collider that the film will use the "teenage" part of the title as the "jumping off point for the film."

"As a lifelong fan of Ninja Turtles, weirdly the 'Teenage' part of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was always the part that stuck out to me the most. And as someone who loves teenage movies, and who’s made a lot of teenage movies, and who literally got their start in their entire profession by writing a teenage movie, the idea of kind of honing in on that element was really exciting to us. I mean, not disregarding the rest, but really using that as kind of a jumping off point for the film."

This is the most recent heroes in a half shell project from Nickelodeon. The network debuted the 2D-animated series Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2018. The network is also working with Netflix on an original animated 2D film based on that most recent series. Season one of Rise of the TMNT is currently streaming on Paramount+.

This is not entirely new ground for Leo, Donatello, Mikey, and Raph. Nickelodeon previously produced a CG-animated series that debuted in 2012. And Warner Bros. also produced a CG-animated feature film. TMNT, whose cast included Chris Evans as Casey Jones. That one released in 2007.

And we’re sure this won’t be the group’s last big screen foray. That’s one heck of a legacy for superheroes who began as a joke.

'RuPaul's Drag Race' Queen Nina West Responds to Critics of 'Blue's Clues & You!' Pride song: 'LGBTQ+ Families Matter'

"I will always continue to choose kindness and positivity and lead with love," West said of critics of the family-focused campaign.

RuPaul's Drag Race Miss Congeniality winner Nina West is living up to her title as she defends her new LGBTQIA+ Pride campaign — created in collaboration with the animated Nickelodeon children's series Blue's Clues and You! — from conservative critics.

West recently told Entertainment Weekly that "representation" and "inclusivity" matter most during Pride season, and that "LGBTQIA+ families deserve a safe space to raise their children and celebrate their individuality and grow without fear."

That sentiment, West feels, holds true even amid backlash against her video project with the kid-focused network — featuring an animated version of West leading a sing-along through the Blue's Clues Pride Parade starring nonbinary animal characters carrying intersectional Pride flags — which detractors have recently slammed for "flagrantly" pushing "gender confusion and sexualized themes" at children.

"What I love about my collaboration with Nickelodeon and Blue's Clues and You! is that we celebrate everyone that makes up our LGBTQIA+ community. It reminds us all that we are integral for the fight for equality," West says. "My job is to not only provide a space for celebration and fun but to reiterate, specifically to my community, that LGBTQIA+ are valid, worthy, and perfect the way they are. I will always continue to choose kindness and positivity and lead with love while educating people on LGBTQIA+ issues and equality. Happy Pride!"

Though many, including author Allie Beth Stuckey, have led an intense charge against the video online (Stuckey called it a "gross" social experiment using kids as "unconsenting subjects"), West, Nickelodeon, and Blue's Clues have received an influx of support from others on social media.

"For the first time in my 40 yrs as a non-binary/trans wheelchair user, I've seen myself represented. All it took was Blues Clues' pride video! One of the non-binary dolphins is using a power wheelchair and is a parent! That's me!" tweeted writer Dominick Evans, while entertainer Eugene Lee Yang said that it was "nice to see a little joy once in a while" and that the video "has more queer representation than anything else out there and it is melting my cold gay heart."

After winning Miss Congeniality on season 11 of RuPaul's Drag Race, West — a Columbus, Ohio -based activist who has raised millions of dollars for queer charities in the past — delved into several child-oriented endeavors, including her popular Story Time With Nina video series that aired digitally throughout 2020. She also lent her voice to the 2019 animated short Coaster, and is currently working on a children's variety show with Queer Eye's Bobby Berk.
