Jenny 'XJ-9' Wakeman, Hugh Neutron and Rocko Announced for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is expanding its roster further with the release of the "Universe Pack," the developers announced this week!

GameMill Entertainment revealed on Friday, May 13 the release of the "Universe Pack," which will see three more DLC characters being added to the Nickelodeon brawler via DLC releases now, during the summer, and during the fall!

One of those characters, robot Jenny "XJ-9" Wakeman from My Life as a Teenage Robot is out right now with a gameplay breakdown accompanying the character to show what she can do.

Jenny is a unique character in that she can repeatedly mash light down and strong down for repeated attacks while grounded. In the case of Jenny's grounded light down attack, she'll actually stomp forward.

As showcased in the video, XJ-9 is gifted with plenty of aerial movement options. By holding her umbrella attack, it's possible to simply float downwards. She is also armed with a stall-then-fall aerial, an aerial that stalls before pushing her upwards and even a "Chest Laser" that pushes her backwards.

This crimefighting teenage robot is quite versatile as she is armed with two different projectiles — the Rocket Power and Explosive Lasers. Do keep in mind that the explosive lasers will only have stun and knockback properties while the attack is grazing the ground.

Along with Jenny, GameMill Entertainment revealed this week that Hugh Neutron, Jimmy's father from The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and Rocko from Rocko's Modern Life would be coming in the summer and fall, respectively. Each will also get unique stages and costumes. Hopefully brawling won't be as dangerous as laundry day for Rocko!

The trio will come packaged inside of the Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl Universe Pack, which is an $11.99 bundle that acts as a DLC pass for the new characters.

The trailer, above shows off Jenny’s robotic powers that she used to fight off aliens in My Life as a Teenage Robot. And while Jenny is great, it's Jimmy’s dad who steals the show. In a particularly memorable moment, Hugh rolls onto the scene on a rumbling hog. It just sort of exudes a sort of dad trying too hard to be cool. (Maybe this is why Judy Neutron is so obsessed with him!)

The website advertising these characters has since been updated to reflect that news with Jenny's full moveset viewable there.

You can check out her moves that way, but if you want a better visual of what's Jenny can do, the video below will provide that. It features Thaddeus Crews, the character designer and programmer working on Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, who shared a walkthrough and a demonstration for Jenny's moves.

This gameplay showcase consists of around six minutes of combat and ends by showing off the other two characters, Hugh and Rocko' who'll be available later. Neither specific release dates nor gameplay for them have been shown just yet, however.

Today's news comes with a big balance patch that tweaks a few general mechanics, some specific characters, and fixes a handful of bugs.

Over on the Twitter account for the game, the Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl devs showed off an alternate costume for Jenny, too, while saying that the other two DLC fighters would similarly get their own alternate outfits and stages to accompany their releases.

The latest DLC for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl follows Shredder from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise who was added earlier in the year. Jenny makes 23 characters that are now playable in the Nickelodeon brawler with that total to be brought to 25 once the next two are added.

Hugh Neutron and Jenny Wakeman have been two of the most requested characters to be added to the game. The campaign for the addition of Hugh even caught the attention of the character's voice actor Mark DeCarlo, who backed the move and said he would be happy to provide voice lines.

Rocko’s inclusion is not that much of a surprise, given he was part of a datamine that happened last year. However, said datamine also had other characters that haven’t yet made it into the game (like Avatar: The Last Airbender's Prince Zuko, Rugrats' Tommy Pickles, and SpongeBob SquarePants' Mr. Krabs, to name a few), and one that has (Shredder), and also didn’t list Jenny or Hugh. But this does track, as Ludosity’s Thaddeus Crews said on the title’s Discord server the datamined information was in the game just in case those characters did make it in and are not the “be-all-end-all confirmations of what can and cannot happen.”

The game’s future beyond characters is unclear, but Fair Play Labs did state that cross-play was coming (which has seemingly been delayed) and teased that voice acting was in the works.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is available for consoles and PCs.

A Look at the Massive Stage Netflix Is Filming Their 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Live-Action Series

The soundstage in Metro Vancouver where Netflix is currently filming the streamer's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation is the world’s largest LED video wall film production studio, according to a recent declaration by Guinness World Records!

The LED sound stage located at Canadian Motion Picture Park is a joint partnership between Los Angeles-based visual effects company Pixomondo and Canadian film equipment rental firm William F. White International (WFW).

The Burnaby facility spans 22,000 sq ft, measuring 80 ft by 27.5 ft, and is lined with 2,500 LED wall panels and 760 LED ceiling panels. The video wall was constructed in the shape of an almost fully enclosed circle to provide productions with 310 degrees of LED screens.

“WFW is deeply committed to virtual production as an integral part of the future of filmmaking and we are delighted to be in the Guinness World Records,” said Edward Hanrahan, WFW’s director of virtual production, in a statement to Daily Hive Urbanized.

“Along with our traditional studio offerings, virtual production allows filmmakers to combine live-action and cutting-edge digitally created environments rendered in real-time on LED walls and ceilings (known as ‘volumes’) to deliver a production experience unlike any other.”

The accelerating use of bright LED screen walls by the global film and television production industry provides a virtual live background for scenes during filming, replacing much of the need for green screens and the associated post-production work.

With powerful computers, a photorealistic three-dimensional background scene is generated, and the scene’s perspective follows the camera’s movements.

The large-format use of these LED screens also dramatically reduces production costs, improves efficiencies, reduces time by speeding up the shooting process, and even provides realistic lighting that can be easily adjusted as needed.

Green screens, in contrast, are static and provide little flexibility, with positioning changes for lighting and cameras requiring time-intensive work. As well, lighting bouncing off the screens gives off green reflections, necessitating colouring to be changed in post-production.

The LED system’s live background also has the added benefit of helping actors get into character, which can be challenging with green screens.

The WFW stage in Burnaby is currently filming Netflix’s live-action version of Nickelodeon’s animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. In 2020, Netflix reached an agreement with Canada Motion Picture Park to enter into a long-term lease to use about 178,000 sq ft of its production facilities, including seven sound stages, and office and support spaces, effectively turning the location into one of their global production hubs.

“The state of the art stage, designed and operated by Pixomondo (PXO) Virtual Production, is 84 feet across and 28 feet high with 23,000 square feet of stage space and more than 3000 LED Panels, making it one of the biggest virtual production volumes in North America,” said Netflix last year.

According to the streaming service, “The virtual production stage which allows for visual effects to be done in real time in camera, combining multiple environments on a single stage, will set a new standard for immersive storytelling.”

“We’re thrilled to start production on this incredible project, and we’re especially excited to work with the technology-benders at PXO to create the wondrous world of Avatar: The Last Airbender using the most advanced techniques available to filmmakers anywhere in the world,” Avatar: The Last Airbender showrunner Albert Kim said in a statement in November 2021.

Pixomondo and WFW have together spent US$30 million for their initial three LED video wall stage facilities in Canada, including two locations in Toronto. Additional facilities are expected in Canada in 2022.

This technology is perhaps best known for its use on The Mandalorian on Disney+, which used Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic’s (ILM) StageCraft LED virtual production system. ILM is also bringing its StageCraft LED system to a studio in Metro Vancouver this year.

By early 2023, there will be three LED video wall studios in Metro Vancouver, with Versatile Media opening a 43,000-sq-ft facility in South Burnaby.

Nickelodeon Renames 'Zokie Sparkleby' As 'Zokie of Planet Ruby'

Nickelodeon has renamed the network's upcoming animated series Zokie Sparkleby as Zokie of Planet Ruby!

Announced during Nickelodeon Upfront 2021 under the title ZJ Sparkleton, the new creator-driven 2D-animated series will help fuel Nickelodeon's ever-expanding content slate.

In buddy comedy Zokie of Planet Ruby, "quirky 10-year-old vlogger Ruby discovers her only video channel follower is a tail-zapping space alien from the planet Pudge named ZJ Sparkleton, and they quickly become best friends. Along with their friend Earl, a talking con-man squirrel, Ruby teaches ZJ about her version of Earth, while ZJ learns to control his unpredictable powers." The series is aimed towards Kids aged 6-11.

Zokie of Planet Ruby is produced by Nelvana, a world-leading international producer, distributor and licensor of children’s animated and live-action content, and slated to premiere on Nickelodeon in the U.S. as part of the network's 2022-2023 content slate, with international markets to follow.

“[Zokie of Planet Ruby and Hamsterdale] are great additions to Nickelodeon’s growing slate of new content because friendship, humor and relatable characters are at the core,” said Ramsey Naito, President, Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation. “The series creators, Brian Morante and Zach Smith, have a history of bringing unique stories to life at Nickelodeon and we can’t wait to dive in with our production partners at Nelvana on these originals.”

“Nelvana is excited to build upon our partnership with Nickelodeon and contribute to their massive animation pipeline with new IP for a global audience,” Pam Westman, President, Nelvana. “With lovable characters and hilarious storylines, [Zokie of Planet Ruby and Hamsterdale] are two titles that we look forward to adding to our production slate.”

ZJ Sparkleton will take its place alongside other series from Nickelodeon’s animated content pipeline--the largest in its history to ever be produced.

Zokie of Planet Ruby is created by Brian Morante (Penguins of Madagascar, Breadwinners, SpongeBob SquarePants). Mike Geiger (3 Amigonauts, Winston Steinburger and Sir Dudley Ding Dong) is the director and Lynne Warner (Corn & Peg, The Most Magnificent Thing) is the supervising producer for Nelvana.

Paramount Global has applied to trademark Zokie of Planet Ruby with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) under the "education, entertainment, sporting and cultural services" and "clothing; footwear; headgear" categories. Both applications are pending approval.
