In a recent interview, Star Trek: Prodigy creators Kevin and Dan Hageman discuss the possibility of a future live-action crossover of their show.
Star Trek: Prodigy creators Kevin and Dan Hageman recently discussed the possibility of a future live-action Star Trek crossover. Prodigy is the second animated Star Trek series following the franchise's rebranding by Alex Kurtzman, and the third since Star Trek's inception in 1965, though the show is the first to be aimed directly at young children and to be completely computer animated. The series premiered on Paramount+ in October 2021 and began airing season 1 part 1's 10 episodes on Nickelodeon earlier this year.
Set in the year 2383, five years after the events of Star Trek: Voyager, Prodigy follows a group of young aliens after they escape enslavement and discover an abandoned Federation starship, the USS Protostar. With 17-year-old Dal R'El (Brett Gray) established as the leader of the crew, the group must learn to work together under the guidance of hologram Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) to escape their slavers and make it to the Alpha Quadrant.
Long after it was revealed that Star Trek's other current animated series, Lower Decks, is receiving a live-action crossover with the immensely popular Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Kevin and Dan Hageman sat down with Collider and discussed whether Star Trek: Prodigy would receive the same treatment. When asked if there were any plans, the pair said there were not, but added that "it would be fun." Series director Ben Hibon called the task a "challenge." Kevin stated that the possible crossover would be "amazing" and shared his thoughts on the live-action characters' looks, adding, "just paint Brett purple. And Ella [Purnell], just paint her white, with some hair prosthetics."
The Hagemans' comments will likely come as a disappointment for fans of Star Trek: Prodigy who wished to see its young characters in some sort of live-action media. Kevin's idea of using Gray and Purnell to play their animated counterparts already shows how much the two actors resemble their characters, similar to Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome, who will portray Brad Boimler and Beckett Mariner respectively when their Star Trek: Lower Decks characters appear on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2. Although there are currently no plans for a Star Trek: Prodigy live-action crossover or adaptation, there is a lot of room within the science-fiction franchise's lore to allow one to occur.
The release of Star Trek: Picard has shown that there is an audience for a legacy sequel to an older Star Trek series. With Mulgrew and Robert Beltran (Chakotay) already lending their voices to Star Trek: Prodigy, the actors can potentially reprise their roles for a future Star Trek: Voyager legacy sequel. As season 1 part 1 of Prodigy concluded with the real Janeway aboard the USS Dauntless tracking the Protostar, her story will inevitably intertwine with Dal's and his crew. This will allow for either a live-action sequel or a prequel following Chakotay's whereabouts following Star Trek: Voyager, which will inevitably collide with the events of Star Trek: Prodigy. With the series set to return to Paramount+ for season 1 part 2 on October 27, fans may have to much longer for a live-action adaptation.
'Star Trek: Prodigy's Creators and Director on Live-Action Crossover Potential
'Star Trek: Prodigy' will return on October 27th.
Star Trek: Prodigy is set to make its Paramount+ return on October 27th, which is why the studio brought its creators, director, and key cast members to New York Comic Con for the impressive Star Trek Universe panel at the Empire Stage. In addition to the Prodigy crew, cast members and creatives from Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Discovery were also beamed down to partake in the festivities.
Star Trek: Prodigy marks Mulgrew's return as Star Trek: Voyager's Captain Janeway, and she returns two-fold by playing the hologram Janeway aboard the Protostar and Vice Admiral Janeway, who is tracking down the starship to uncover the mystery of what happened to Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran). In addition to Mulgrew and newcomer Jameela Jamil (who plays Ensign Asencia) the cast also includes Dal (Brett Gray), Gwyn (Elle Purnell), Rok-Tahk (Rylee Alazraqui), Jankom Pog (Jason Mantazoukas), Zero (Angus Imrie), and Murf (Dee Bradley Baker) who will be continuing their misadventures aboard the Protostar when the series returns on October 27th.
A few months back, Collider caught up with Kevin and Dan Hageman to discuss the mid-season finale of Star Trek: Prodigy, and the topic of a crossover was broached, though this was before the announcement that Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be crossing over very soon. So naturally, we revisited that question during a roundtable interview at the convention, in addition to asking the Hagemans and director Ben Hibon about the evolving dynamic between Dal and Gwyn.
COLLIDER: I just have to say I love that the Borg were brought in. I was like freaking out this morning watching my screeners beforehand. I loved the Borg as a child. But the last time I spoke to the two of you I asked about whether we'd ever get a live-action with the animated characters as well, and then we got the news that Strange New Worlds is doing this crossover with Lower Decks. Are we getting closer?
KEVIN HAGEMAN: No, it would be fun. It would be fun.
BEN HIBON: It would be a challenge, though.
KEVIN HAGEMAN: It is amazing though, when I look at Ella and Brett and I’m like-
It would be so perfect.
KEVIN HAGEMAN: Just paint Brett purple. And Ella, just paint her white, with some hair prosthetics.
You could even play with genetics, because there’s some genetic stuff that happens.
DAN HAGEMAN: That one might not be in the budget though.
KEVIN HAGEMAN: That’s a good idea.
I'm a sucker for Dal and Gwyn’s dynamic. From last year at the premiere at New York Comic Con, I was just like, "These two. These are who I'm rooting for." Can you talk a little bit about how their friendship and connection changes and evolves this season?
DAN HAGEMAN: I think they see something in each other that they'd like to be. If you look at Gwyn, she's someone who hasn't really had an uplifting childhood, and she's had to grow up at a very young age. I think when she looks at Dal, there's a childlike [element]. He’s carefree.
HIBON: She's also much more rigid than he is, you know, in her way. She's certainly kind of like, appreciating that side of that. It's kind of like nature that Dal offers yeah, it's attractive. It's attractive to her.
DAN HAGEMAN: I think for Dal, like he looks at Gwyn, and she's very great at what she does. And I think that Dal talks a big game, but he's not really that great. Yeah, he's covering up a lot of flaws. I think he sees the perfect person in Gwyn.
KEVIN HAGEMAN: They realize that they're better together than on their own right? So like Kirk, and Spock, you know, they're an amazing team together. If it was just Spock, The Adventures of Spock and…Spock. It wouldn't be [as good]. He needs Kirk to help. Right?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is scheduled to open in theaters on Aug. 4, 2023, having been pushed up a week from its original Aug. 11, 2023 release date.
The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film was announced to be in development at Nickelodeon Animation Studio in June 2020. Jeff Rowe, best known for co-directing The Mitchells vs. the Machines, will direct the film from a screenplay by Brendan O'Brien. Rogen will produce alongside Evan Goldberg and James Weaver through their company Point Grey Pictures.
Plot details for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remain under wraps, but Rogen previously revealed that the film will use the "teenage" part of the title as the "jumping off point for the film."
No casting has been announced for Mutant Mayhem at this time, but Rogen previously revealed in June 2021 that the four turtles will be voiced by teenagers instead of adult actors.

In a recent interview, Eastman revealed that although he wasn't involved in the project, he was nevertheless excited to see what Rogen would do with the famous pop culture characters. "No, I have not spoken to [Rogen], and that's also awesome because I do feel like different parts of the Turtles, different universes that Nickelodeon would bring me to work on," Eastman said. "And so that's what I think is special. Because I don't want him to feel intimidated or think that if he asks me a question, I tell him, 'Well, you should do this,' that he should do that. It's his vision and his idea."
Mutant Mayhem will be the seventh theatrical Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, as well as the first theatrical animated film starring Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael since 2007's TMNT.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will be the first theatrically released TMNT movie since the 2016 live-action/CGI film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.
Paramount+ also announced earlier this year that it'll be producing a series of exclusive movies for the streaming service, beginning in 2023, each centering on one of the property’s storied villains in never-before-told tales.
Paramount is also working on a live-action reboot of the franchise, with Colin Jost and his brother Casey writing the script for the live-action film and Michael Bay returning as producer from the 2014 and 2016 films.
