Larry Ellison to Control Paramount After Deal, FCC Filing Says

Paramount Global, the parent of CBS, will be controlled by software billionaire Larry Ellison after a group led by his son David completes its purchase of the Redstone family’s interest in the film and TV company, according to a regulatory filing.

Ellison, the co-founder of Oracle Corp., is backing his son’s proposal to buy the Redstone’s National Amusements Inc. and take control of Paramount for more than $8 billion. According to a filing with the US Federal Communications Commission, the older Ellison will own 77.5% of National Amusements through a trust and series of corporations.

The filing is required because the sale of Paramount will involve the transfer of broadcast licenses. Paramount owns the CBS television network and a number of TV stations. A spokesperson for the FCC declined to comment on the filing.

Paramount has agreed to be acquired in a deal led by David Ellison and his Skydance Media, an independent film and TV company. The Ellisons, and their partner, RedBird Capital Partners, have agreed to buy National Amusements for $2.4 billion and invest more than $6 billion to acquire Paramount shares and reduce the company’s debt.

The rest of National Amusements will be owned by private equity investor Gerry Cardinale, the founder of RedBird. He is listed as the controlling person of RB Tentpole LP, a partnership that will own 22.5% of National Amusements if the deal goes through, according to the filing.

Paramount, which also owns cable networks including Nickelodeon and MTV, agreed to be acquired by the Ellison family and RedBird in early July. As part of the deal, Skydance Media will merge into Paramount.

David Ellison is to serve as Paramount’s chairman and chief executive officer, according to the filing. He will have operational control of the business, according to a spokesperson for Skydance.

Larry Ellison is a major donor to Republican super PACs, and his politics raise concerns about using Paramount as a vehicle for conservative causes, said Jeff Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy, a Washington-based advocacy group.

“There must be guarantees of journalistic and editorial independence from the station group and related video services,” Chester said in an email.

The FCC approves changes in ownership of broadcast TV stations. The filing says the new owners intend to “preserve and enhance the legacy” of the CBS TV network and the company’s 28 owned and operated local stations.

‘South Park’ Returning In 2025; Why Creators Are Skipping The 2024 Elections

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are opening up about why the animated series is delayed and why they will skip the 2024 elections.

South Park

In a new interview, Parker and Stone revealed they are not keen on joking about Donald Trump anymore, which is part of the reason the hit Comedy Central animated series won’t return until 2025.

“We’ve tried to do South Park through four or five presidential elections, and it is such a hard thing to—it’s such a mind scramble, and it seems like it takes outsized importance,” Stone told Vanity Fair while promoting their ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor! documentary.

Parker added, “Obviously, it’s f***ing important, but it kind of takes over everything and we just have less fun. I don’t know what more we could possibly say about Trump.”

Stone said that the show’s not returning until next year was “on purpose” as they would surely avoid the election cycle. The duo also said the delay was due to “waiting for Paramount to figure all their sh** out.”

The last episode of South Park Season 26 aired on March 29, 2023. Since then, Parker and Stone have produced a series of standalone specials for Paramount+, including South Park: Joining the Panderverse, which premiered on October 27, 2023, and parodied the Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm for the perceived “forced wokeness” for reasons of identity politics.

This was followed by South Park (Not Suitable for Children) was released on December 20, 203 and parodied online subscription service OnlyFans and social media personalities. Additional specials tackled the streaming wars and COVID-19.

The last new episode of South Park was a special satirizing the Ozempic craze among celebrities. The special titled South Park: The End of Obesity dropped on May 24, 2024.

The Nova Music Festival was supposed to be a celebration of life, love and music for thousands of young people but became one of the first targets when Hamas launched the deadliest terror attack in Israel’s history. In WE WILL DANCE AGAIN more than a dozen young festival-goers tell gripping stories of how each of them managed to survive from one minute to the next. Their eyewitness accounts are woven together with footage they filmed themselves and footage recovered from cameras worn by Hamas.

American Hersh Goldberg-Polin’s personal struggle to survive is included in the documentary through the stories of friends he went to the festival with, including two people who were in the same bomb shelter with him. Tragically, Hersh was among the six hostages who were recently executed by Hamas before the Israeli army could rescue them.

“The human cost of the Hamas attack in Israel and the war that followed in Gaza has been catastrophic for both Israelis and Palestinians.” says Susan Zirinsky, president of See It Now Studios. “It is a painful story of unfathomable tragedy, but also of bravery, sacrifice, and heroism. This film is a document of history, of one of the attacks that began on October 7th at 6:29 in the morning.”

WE WILL DANCE AGAIN is directed by Yariv Mozer. His award-winning credits include The Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes and Ben Gurion: Epilogue, My First War

WE WILL DANCE AGAIN is a co-production of Susan Zirinsky’s See It Now Studios with SIPUR and factual producer Bitachon 365 in collaboration with MGM Television, a division of Amazon MGM Studios, and HSCC. Other co-producers include BBC Storyville, which will broadcast the documentary in the UK, and Hot Channel 8, which will air it in Israel.
