IT'S the toxic ooze that just keeps on giving. If the idea of a Michael Bay-produced TMNT film has left you with more doubt than delight, there's also a third animated TV series on the way.

And visitors to the 21st annual MCM Expo London Comic Con will be among the first to get a glimpse of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Nickelodeon UK will present an exclusive sneak peek of the upcoming series as part of a presentation on Saturday, May 26, at 11.30 am, featuring Rich Magallanes, Nickelodeon senior vice president of animation and current series, and original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman.

"It is a huge thrill to be able to give UK fans a sneak peek of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," said Magallanes. "Working on the series has been a real privilege and a lot of fun. I'm excited to share the show with Turtles fans at MCM Expo."

Visitors to May's MCM Expo at ExCel will get an exclusive look at the next generation of turtles, as Nickelodeon UK previews its upcoming CG-reimagining of the classic animated series.

The show stars the voices of Jason Biggs (American Pie) as Leonardo, Sean Astin (Lord of The Rings) as Raphael, Greg Cipes (Teen Titans) as Michelangelo and Rob Paulsen (Planet Sheen) as Donatello. Paulsen also voiced the original Raphael from 1987-1996 in the first series.

The all-new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is set to premiere on Nickelodeon UK this autumn.

Kevin Eastman On The New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles And Our First Impressions Of Some Footage

I’m not down at the MCM Expo today but that Shaw Williams character is and she called me up to fill me in on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles presentation and following Q&A with Kevin Eastman.

She’s rushed off her feet down there, but she’s passed me her notes to misinterpret wildly.

Let’s start with the footage, which comes from Nickelodeon’s upcoming carton reboot. Proof that it’s a reboot, if proof be need be? Hannah believes episode one to be an origin story, showing the turtles “coming up to the surface of the world for the first time.”

It wasn’t clear if the footage screened was from this episode, or if it was clear, Hannah [...] didn’t pick up on it. She said that the animation was good, but some of the writing was a bit off. This she blamed on the use of Michaelangelo as a forced comic relief.

Having seen The Krang in action, Hannah tried to describe their squishy brain in a cyber body look by saying that they were cyber bodies with just a squishy brain thing inside. She did confirm, however, that we’re looking at The Krang, emphasis on the The. This is a whole race, not a one-off Krang character.

The series’ main villain, she confirmed, was Shredder.

One of the points of reinvention was the new April O’Neill who is, now, a young girl. The reason for this, according to Eastman, was that they thought about it for a bit and decided, actually, having a thirty-something lady hanging around with these teenage boys was actually kind of creepy. Less creepy is a human teenage girl hanging out with a bunch of mutated turtles, of course. I suppose that’s the conceit of the piece; that they’re just boys, really, at a subtext level.

The music in the show is going to be hip hop, drum and bass and dubstep. Will the beloved theme tune be coming back? Eastman refused to answer, saying that he liked the original tune, and… Yeah, who are we kidding. He’d have just said “No,” if it wasn’t. I expect there’s a new hip-hop theme coming.

Maybe, just maybe, that’s got something to do with Kid Cudi? Would make a kind of sense.

NEWSFLASH: The cartoon series is going to be supported by a new toy line. Hannah tells me:

The party van is coming back and a motorbike which converts into stealth mode, which basically means it gets a tortoiseshell on top.

Where the heck is that a stealth mode? A beach in Malaysia?

Eastman was also asked about the in-development Ninja Turtle movie. He said that he likes what he has seen – though what this is was not clear. It may have been concept art, test footage, script pages, pre-viz or anything. He didn’t clarify what involvement he has with the film, so it could be as simple as him being on the payroll as chief Man Who Says He’s Seen Some Stuff And We Don’t Need To Worry.

Specifically in respect of the new, alien-world origin calculated for the Turtles, Eastman said that “it won’t get in the way.”

So there we go. “The animation looked quite good” was the bit I wanted to hear, and I did. Look forward to checking it out myself.

Avatar: The Last Airbender: I've recommended this show before (check out a previous blog entry here) but I must reiterate - if you haven't seen it, you need to watch this show. The show, which aired for three seasons on Nickelodeon, takes place in a world where some people can bend four elements - water, earth, fire and air. Aang is an airbender - the last airbender - but he's more than that - he's the Avatar, the one person in each generation who can master all four elements and bring balance to the world. Aang gets frozen in ice for 100 years, and when he wakes up, he enlists the help of waterbender Katara, her brother Sokka and, throughout the show, several other people, to help him defeat the Fire Nation and bring balance to the world. "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is funny, exciting and touching, with great characters. I also love the strong female characters (there are many!) and the concentration on friendship, working together and striving for peace. "Avatar: The Last Airbender" has spawned a sequel series, called "The Legend of Korra," which just finished its first season. (It also spawned a live-action movie [...])

“The new GetGlue guide is not a grid; it is a personalized calendar for what to watch,” states their launch announcement. GetGlue HD is available immediately on the iPad and will come out on the iPhone, Android, mobile site, and GetGlue.com later in the fall.

Buzz is still heating up for Zeebox's long-awaited U.S. launch. Zeebox has proven traction in the UK, while GetGlue has partnerships with 75 networks. Both companies are striving for the same goal, but taking different approaches.

It’s not a coincidence that there are a number of educational apps on the iPad emerging from those with a background in children’s television, not to mention from top kids’ brands like Sesame St., Disney, Nickelodeon, and others. This industry has long sought to break down the barrier of the fourth wall, and communicate directly with the children on the receiving end of their efforts to entertain and teach. In today’s TV shows, those efforts feel inauthentic and forced, such as when Dora asks “what was your favorite part?” and then blinks while waiting the child’s response. Kids quickly learn that they don’t have to answer, and the show will continue without their involvement. On the iPad, that’s no longer true. Their actions or inactions not only help progress the story, they can also be measured, monitored and personalized to the child’s own level.

This is the future of children’s entertainment.

Georgeville moves into US television

Marc Rosen is the film and TV producer whose credits include Harry Potter and Threshold. In March he set up Georgeville Television (GVTV) and he now has three straight-to-series orders from US broadcast nets and two more on cable. He tells TBI about the new shows, which include a new offering from The X-Files’ Chris Carter and a reboot of classic sci-fi series Blake's 7.

GVTV launched in March, but Marc Rosen says he was working on setting up his new production firm for two years. “We want to grow shows like a US studio, but be more flexible and fluid in terms of the deal-making,” says Marc Rosen. “I was leaving a production deal and asked myself what the business was all about and I identified a gap in the market,” Rosen says.

That gap was for straight-to-series shows in which the total budget is not frontloaded around a huge pilot, but across a guaranteed full series order, giving distribution partner Sierra Engine a full season to take to market and sell internationally.

GVTV's shows are not, however, inexpensive. Crossbones has a budget of over US$4 million an episode and The After and Blake’s 7 both come in at north of US$3 million per instalment. The cost, however, is not frontloaded around a huge pilot, but across a guaranteed full series order.

“I always wanted to have straight-to-series projects, why should networks spend $10-to-$15 million dollars on a pilot when you could spend a little more and get thirteen full episodes,” Rosen says. “Pilots can sometimes make a show look too expensive and we’re not being forced to do that.”

GVTV is backed by Indian conglomerate Reliance, which, Rosen says, means it does not need to attract a plethora of coproduction partners .

The network series are Crossbones, Hunters and The After. The two confirmed cable series are Blake’s Seven and Z, a contemporary take on the Zorro legend.

NBC was looking for a partner on Crossbones, which is in pre-production and will air on the network next year. Based on the Colin Woodward novel, Neil Cross (Luther) is attached as the showrunner on the 10x1hr series, which centres on the idealistic island society set up by infamous pirate Blackbeard.

Hunters, meanwhile, crossed GVTV’s radar courtesy of James Lassiter from Will Smith’s production company Overbrook Entertainment. The procedural, for ABC, follows an elite team doctors and scientists taking on impossible medical cases. Will Smith will not star, but Rosen says an as-yet-unnamed movie star is on board.

Perhaps the most eagerly-anticipated of the three series is The After, largely because it is from The X-Files' creator Chris Curtis.

Set in Los Angeles, it’s a twist on an end-of-the-world scenario. “Most things in case skip straight to post-apocalypse, but this examines the first seconds and then days after mystery event,” Rosen says. “There is a group of eight characters and they are trying to work out what has happened.”

For cable there is also Z, a modern-day adaptation of Zorro. A full script and bible for the show, which is for an unnamed US cable network, has been produced. “It’s an ‘inspired-by’ piece,” Rosen explains. “It’s about a young Latino kid in Los Angeles who, with his uncle, sets out to avenge his sister’s murder and ends up taking on a modern-day Zorro character called Z.”

Naren Shankar (CSI, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) has been brought on as producer and it will be directed by French director Louis Leterrier (Transporter, The Incredible Hulk).

The Zorro connection continues with 13x1hr Blake’s Seven with Martin Campbell, director of thr big-screen The Mask of Zorro, on board as director and executive producer. The show is a new adaptation of the classic sci-fi series, for Syfy in the US and Sky in the UK.

Sierra Engine is selling Crossbones, The After and Hunters.

The newly minted distributor made its first outing at MIPCOM and was shopping the GVTV series as well as another new scripted show Rescue 3. The 22x1hr series for Tribune in the US is from one of the creators of Baywatch, Gregory J. Bonann and stars Dolph Lundgren as a member of an elite rescue task force.

Sierra/Engine Television is the result of an alliance Chris Philip, Nick Meyer and Marc Schaberg, who have joined forces.

Philip has combined his distributor Engine Entertainment with Meyer and Schaberg’s film sales and distribution outfit Sierra/Affinity.

As well as the GVTV fare, the Chris Philip still has a first-look deal with Ben Silverman’s Electus and has other shows in the catalogue including Nickelodeon’s animated series Glenn Martin DDS and a range of DIY series featuring Mike Holmes.

Philip says there is a development slate stretching to 30 projects.

According to the Sony Music/Nickelodeon Records Press Release below from FemaleFirst.co.uk about the Nickelodeon boyband "Big Time Rush" planning to release their latest brand new single called 'Elevate' in the UK on Sunday 3rd June 2012, Nickelodeon UK may be planning to hold the UK premiere of the brand new original Nickelodeon TV movie, "Big Time Movie", which is based on the hit Nickelodeon series and Nickelodeon boy band "Big Time Rush", soon, possibly as early as May 2012 or June 2012:

Their first film, Big Time Movie for Nickelodeon, was watched by over 13 million viewers in its premiere weekend in the US and will be aired in the UK later this month. The boys, in a James Bond-inspired comedic adventure, sing selections from the Beatles catalogue in this fun movie set in London.

In the brand new "Big Time Rush" movie, "Big Time Movie", the BTR boys (Kendall Schmidt (Kendall Knight), James Maslow (James Diamond), Carlos Pena (Carlos Garcia), and Logan Henderson (Logan Mitchell)) must tap their inner spy as their adventure finds them driving exotic cars and jumping out of helicopters, while trying to make it to their first world tour concert on time. Hot on their trail are evil henchmen named Maxwell, British secret agents and Swedish spies as well as billionaire businessman, Sir Atticus Moon who wants back his precious device code named: "The Beetle," an anti-gravitational device with enormous power. Once they learn they're carrying this precious cargo, the guys get pulled into a madcap mission throughout London, UK, which threatens the onset of their world tour. With the help of teen spy Penny Lane, the guys set out to save Penny's father M16 Agent Simon Lane and stop Sir Atticus Moon's plot to use "The Beetle" to gain world domination.
