Nickelodeon Looking to Develop More Factual-Driven Content

Nickelodeon is currently looking for opportunities to develop more factual-driven, long-form stories—including, potentially, hour-long content for YouTube or other digital platforms, Rob Bagshaw, Executive Vice President (EVP), Nickelodeon Unscripted Content, has revealed to Kidscreen, however, Bagshaw added that more development time is required to find the right projects.

Nickelodeon is also planning to develop factual linear content for 2020 similar to one of the kids network's longest-running series, Nick News, which, hosted by outspoken television journalist Linda Ellerbee aired from 1992 to 2015—though no timeline for delivery has been set yet.

“Nick News allowed for serious conversations about pop culture or newsworthy moments. Our audience today is smarter and more aware than ever—we would be doing them a disservice if we didn’t provide opportunities to have those conversations,” says Bagshaw.

Nick News, produced by Lucky Duck Productions, is the longest-running kids' news show in television history. It built its reputation on the respectful and direct way it speaks to kids about the important issues of the day. Over the years, Nick News received more than 21 Emmy nominations and won its tenth Emmy Award for Forgotten But Not Gone: Kids, HIV & AIDS in the category of Outstanding Children's Nonfiction Program. Its additional Emmy wins include: Under the Influence: Kids of Alcoholics (2011); The Face of Courage: Kids Living with Cancer (2010); Coming Home: When Parents Return from War (2009); The Untouchable Kids of India (2008); Private Worlds: Kids and Autism (2007); Never Again: From the Holocaust to the Sudan (2005); Faces of Hope: The Kids of Afghanistan (2002) and What Are You Staring At? (1998). In 1995, the entire series won the Emmy.

Nick News was also honored with the Edward R. Murrow Award for best Network News Documentary for Coming Home: When Parents Return from War — the first-ever kids' television program to receive this prestigious award. Nick News also received three Peabody Awards, including a personal award given to Ellerbee for explaining the impeachment of President Clinton to kids, as well as a Columbia duPont Award and more than a dozen Parents' Choice Awards.

Nickelodeon UK Releases 'Living Loud: The Surprise Party' Online Game

Nickelodeon UK & Ireland has released Living Loud: The Surprise Party, a brand-new digital game inspired by Nicktoons' hit animated series The Loud House!

In Living Loud: The Surprise Party, Lincoln has enlisted the help of his family and friends; they're throwing a surprise party for Lori: a spectacular picnic in Ketcham Park! Fans have to guide them through the game and help them gather all that's needed to stage the best party in town! Take control of Lincoln, Clyde, Ronnie Anne and Bobby to pull the whole thing together. Fans can also enlist their friends for extra items to collect.

Ronnie Anne and Bobby will be starring in their own animated spin-off from The Loud House, The Casagrandes, coming soon to Nicktoons.

Living Loud: The Surprise Party follows the successes of Living Loud: Lincoln’s List, which launched summer 2017 and has continued to be the biggest game on nicktoons.co.uk since the site’s launch, and 2018's multiplayer game Living Loud: Summer School.

Nickelodeon is preparing for the return of The Midnight Society with the all-new Are You Afraid of the Dark? three-part limited series event. Based on the ‘90s kids’ cult classic, and reimagined for a new generation, part one of Are You Afraid of the Dark? will debut on Friday, Oct. 11, at 7:00 p.m. (ET/PT), with parts two and three to follow Oct. 18, and Oct. 25, respectively.

Across the three hour-long episodes, Are You Afraid of the Dark? will follow members of an entirely new Midnight Society, who tell a terrifying tale of the Carnival of Doom and its evil ringmaster Mr. Tophat, only to witness the shocking story come frightfully to life. In the just-released trailer, viewers meet the new members of the Midnight Society, get a glimpse at the uncertainty that awaits and prepare for an adventure beyond their wildest nightmares.

The new members of the Midnight Society are: Rachel, played by Lyliana Wray (Top Gun: Maverick); Gavin, played by Sam Ashe Arnold (Best.Worst.Weekend.Ever.); Akiko, played by Miya Cech (Rim of the World, Always Be My Maybe); Graham, played by Jeremy Taylor (IT: Chapter Two, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween); and Louise, played by Tamara Smart (Artemis Fowl, The Worst Witch). The Carnival of Doom’s ringmaster, Mr. Tophat, is played by Rafael Casal (Blindspotting).

Are You Afraid of the Dark? is produced by ACE Entertainment (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, The Perfect Date) with ACE founder Matt Kaplan and Spencer Berman serving as executive producers. The series is written by BenDavid Grabinski (Skiptrace, Happily) and directed by Dean Israelite (Power Rangers movie, Project Almanac), both of whom are also executive producers. Chris Foss is also an executive producer.

One of the Nickelodeon’s most iconic series from the ‘90s, the original Are You Afraid of the Dark? delivered riveting stories of horror to young audiences, all from a kid’s perspective. Are You Afraid of the Dark? is owned by DHX and was created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel, who are also executive producers on the project.
