Here's What the 'Zoey 101' School Looks Like Today

A TikTok user’s footage of the filming location for Nickelodeon's beloved noughties series Zoey 101 has gone viral!

On Feb. 20, Brandon Sosa posted a clip that revealed a montage of locations from Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif., which was used as the setting of Pacific Coast Academy, the fictional school featured in the series. Starring Jamie Lynn Spears, the comedy drama is set at a previously all-boys school that has just started accepting female students.

Pepperdine University was used as the filming location for PCA in the first two seasons, before production moved to Santa Clarita in California in season 3. All the sets were perfectly re-created by Genius Production Designer Harry Matheu. Famous alumni of Pepperdine University include Tia Mowry-Hardrict (Sister, Sister, Instant Mom) and her twin sister, Tamera Mowry. (Sister, Sister).

Sosa’s montage shows scenic views of the university’s campus, along with a look at a recreation room. The TikTok user’s clip has since received over 415,000 likes and more than 2,000 comments.

“I swear everyone on tik tok lives in magical or famous places while I’m in PA watching the 20th amish kid ride by my window on a scooter,” one person joked.

“Pepperdine is literally the nicest school ever,” another person wrote.

Zoey 101 aired for four seasons, with its last episode airing on May 2, 2008. It was nominated for an Emmy in 2005 and won multiple Kids’ Choice Awards and Young Artist Awards during its run.

From J-14:

OMG All The Behind-the-Scenes Secrets You Need To Know About ‘Zoey 101’

This may come as a shock, but Zoey 101‘s final episode actually aired on Nickelodeon exactly 12 years ago. Yup! Time has really flown by, and we can’t believe that one of our absolute favorite series to ever hit the network ended over a decade ago.

Although it’s been a really long time since we got to watch our favorite characters navigate life at PCA, we remember it like it was yesterday. In fact, we’d still argue that Zoey and Chase are our OTP. And yeah, we were kind of obsessed with Logan and Quinn too.

But as much as we remember shipping some of the shows most adorable couples, we’ll never forget how sad it was when the series officially came to an end in May 2008. NGL, it was pretty traumatizing. Still, the fact that the show ended doesn’t take away from how good is truly was, and actually, there are several behind-the-scenes secrets you never even knew about the Nickelodeon series!

That’s right, you guys! The show’s been off the air for more than 10 years, and there are still several things you’ve yet to discover. Lucky for you, we’ve made a list of ’em all right here. You can thank us later!

Scroll through the [facts] for all the best behind-the-scenes secrets from Zoey 101.

Stacey was originally going to be a one-time character.
You may know Stacey as “cotton swab girl,” simply due to her passion for Q-Tips and her prominent lisp. What you may not know about the character, however, is that she was originally only intended to be in one single episode of the show. OMG.

Abby Wilde, the actress behind the iconic character, told MTV, “I did my episode, and I guess I did OK, because they told me they were bringing me back… Then I did 31 episodes.” Wow.

Matthew Underwood was offered the role of Troy Bolton in ‘High School Musical.’
Can you imagine how different High School Musical would’ve been without Zac Efron playing the role of Troy Bolton? Turns out, it could’ve been way different because the role was actually offered to Matthew Underwood originally. Say whaaat?! Ultimately, Matthew’s Zoey 101 contract prevented him from pursuing the opportunity, but that doesn’t mean we’re not shook AF by the fact that the role was offered to him first.

Austin Butler appeared in the series as two separate characters.
Diehard fans of the show probably remember that Austin Butler appeared in the final season of Zoey 101 for a few episodes. In those episodes, he played Zoey’s boyfriend James, but interestingly enough, that wasn’t the only part he played in the series. Huh?

In an earlier episode called “Quarantine,” Austin actually portrayed a different character — a boy named Danny — who was dating — wait for it — STACEY. How funny is that?!

Apple products were changed to pear products.
When the series first began, there’s a chance you may have noticed some Apple products in the background. As time went on, though, the show changed Apple to Pear, as you can see in the photo above. How interesting!

Chase’s hair was actually a wig near the end of the series.
Personally, we lived for Chase’s super curly and voluminous ‘do, but since his character was gone for much of the final season, the actor, Sean Flynn, actually chopped off all his locks! You may have never noticed, but when he returned to the show for a bit, his bushy hair was actually a wig. Who knew?!

Dana was supposed to end up dating Logan, but disappeared after Season 1.
Remember Dana from Season 1? TBH, your memories of her probably aren’t too great — especially considering her bad attitude. Still, she was a pretty funny character to have around, even though she didn’t stick around for long.

So where did she go? Turns out, the character of Dana was originally intended to wind up dating Logan, but producers ultimately decided the actress who played her was too old and cut her before Season 2. Savage.

The character of Quinn was created specifically for Erin Sanders.
We think we can all agree that Quinn was one of the quirkiest characters on TV at the time, and we loved her for it! But did you know that the character wasn’t originally written into the series? Well, it’s true!

When Erin Sanders went to audition for the show, she actually tried out for the role of Nicole. As we all know, she didn’t get the part. However, producers loved her so much that they added a character just for her. How amazing is that?!

Despite rumors, Jamie Lynn Spears was not pregnant during production of the final season.
Fans of the series were shook by the news that the series was officially coming to an end. But even more than that, they couldn’t believe that the star of the show, Jamie Lynn Spears, was pregnant at just 16 years old.

As you could imagine, rumors ran rampant that Jamie was pregnant during production of the final season, and that’s why it was forced to come to an end, but actually, that’s not true at all. Filming had already ended for the Season 4, so that rumor was just that — a rumor.

In January 2019, Jamie explained that the show ended simply because her contract had finished, and she wanted to go back to school.

“14 years later… still a jam. #itdidNOTendbecauseofpregnancy #contractwasfinished,” she wrote on Instagam, alongside a video of the iconic theme song.

When one fan commented, “Oh wow you didn’t quit because you were pregnant, you waited this long to tell us,” Jamie Lynn replied, “Nope… I went home to finish high school and was going to pursue movies.”

“Would the contract have been extended if not for pregnancy?” another fan asked. “No,” the former Nickelodeon star wrote.

Jamie Lynn Spears and Alexa Nikolas didn’t get along.
Considering how close their characters seemed on the show, it’s kind of surprising to learn that Jamie and Alexa Nikolas, who played the role of Nicole, didn’t get along off screen. Apparently, their fights got so bad that Jamie’s older sis, Britney Spears, had to get involved. Unfortunately, their fighting is also allegedly the reason that Alexa’s time on the show came to an end. Season 2 was her last, and after that, her character was sent to an all-girls school. Crazy!

In the final season, characters were seen on iCarly.com.
Dan Schneider is responsible for so many of our favorite Nickelodeon series. Therefore, it totally makes sense why he would promote his shows within other series whenever the opportunity arose. That said, you may have noticed that in Season 4, iCarly.com is pretty much visible on every computer screen. Hmm… we guess they were iCarly fans too!

The season finale wasn’t actually the season finale.
So here’s a doozy for you. The episode titled “Chasing Zoey” was intended to be the series finale, and in Canada, it was! And although the episode gave us a ton of closure and did a good job explaining where the characters were headed next, it actually wasn’t the last episode to air in the United States.

After “Chasing Zoey,” Nickelodeon aired “PCA Confidential.” The episode was supposed to be part of Season 3, but alas, the network held off and didn’t air it until the very end.

Filming took place at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.
Last, but certainly not least, you may be shocked to find out that Pacific Coast Academy is real — well, kind of. Even though the school isn’t technically legit, the show was filmed on the Pepperdine University campus in Malibu, CA, so if you want to visit, you know where to go!

The cast will be reuniting in an upcoming episode of Nickelodeon's All That, which will see Jamie Lynn Spears with fellow Zoey 101 castmates Paul Butcher, Sean Flynn, Kristin Herrera, Chris Massey, Erin Sanders and Matthew Underwood in an all-new version of the sketch “Thelma Stump.”

Victoria Justice Teases Virtual Kids’ Choice Awards, Talks 'Victorious' Reunion

Extra’s Jenn Lahmers caught up with Nickelodeon alum Victoria Justice (Zoey 101, Victorious, Fun Size) via Zoom, just days before she hosts the first-ever virtual Kids’ Choice Awards on Nickelodeon.

Though Justice will be hosting from her house, she hinted that “there’s always gonna be slime involved.”

Justice also opened up about what’s she been up while in quarantine with her family. Watch!

Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards 2020: Celebrate Together, a show packed with stars, surprises and slime--and hosted by Victoria Justice, airs Saturday, May 2, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon USA and YTV Canada, and on Nickelodeon channels and programming blocks globally soon after!

From TV Insider:

Victoria Justice Promises Fun, Happiness & Slime in Virtual Kids' Choice Awards 2020

The show must go on — with a few changes. Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards is the first awards show to be virtually produced, making former Victorious star Victoria Justice the first to host such a televised event.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Justice and the rest of the celebrities set to appear during May 2's Kids' Choice Awards 2020: Celebrate Together are obviously recording from their own homes. "I'm still trying to have fun with it," the host told TV Insider of the "very DIY" show. (She's gotten help from her sister and family.) "I have my own little set-up that I put together to make it festive and fun. I think it's a really cool and unique opportunity. It's obviously a really interesting and challenging time for a lot of people, and I'm excited about being able to talk to the kids about it."

"The format is going to be different, but it's still the Kids' Choice Awards, so it's going to be really fun," she continued. "There's going to be lot of special guests and it's going to get a little slime-y." However, she teased, "I can't tell you who or what or when or where." Will the host herself get slimed? "Who knows?"

Celebrities scheduled to appear include Dwayne Johnson, Ariana Grande, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, Camila Cabello, Millie Bobby Brown, Ellen DeGeneres, BTS, Shawn Mendes, Lil Nas X, Dove Cameron, Tom Holland, David Dobrik, Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, SSSniperWolf, and more. The show will also include cast members of The Avengers: Endgame (Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner), and a sneak peek at Nickelodeon’s upcoming live-action series The Astronauts.

Plus, blimp trophies will still be given out, and there will even be a musical performance: Asher Angel with "All Day."

Justice likes that the show doesn't take itself too seriously. "It's all about the kids. It's all about having fun. It's bright and colorful and just goofy and crazy and fun."

With everyone home, "it's a great opportunity for families to watch it together," she added. "It's going to be a nice little dose of encouragement and happiness and joy."

Nickelodeon is also raising awareness for No Kid Hungry, a national campaign to end childhood hunger in America, with a $1 million donation in support of those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. "I'm so excited that Nickelodeon is taking this opportunity to do some good in a big way," Justice said. "It's really incredible."

So tune in May 2 for some slime. You never know when or where it will show up.

From Young Hollywood:

YH AT HOME WITH VICTORIA JUSTICE

Victoria Justice and Young Hollywood go together like peanut butter and jelly; we've practically grown up together! From her early Nickelodeon days to her music releases and film roles, we have seen it all and rooted for her every step of the way!

But don't think she's left her dear old slime-based studio behind – once a Nick kid, always a Nick kid! Victoria is back to host the Kids' Choice Awards, but this year's ceremony has an appropriate social distancing twist! Due to the quarantine, the entire ceremony, which was pre-recorded, will take place remotely from participants’ homes, and it was definitely a unique experience!

It’s been a hot minute since we last got to chat with our gurl, but thanks to the wonders of technology (and since the quarantine seems to have a knack for inspiring long-awaited reunions), we had the chance to catch up with Victoria this week via Zoom, where she joined us from her family home!

We were also joined by host Tracy Behr and her nieces, who are huge fans of Victoria and came armed with some burning questions, like what her favorite episodes and songs from “Victorious” were and what it was like to recently reunite with her old castmates!

Plus, Victoria tells us how she is passing the time in quarantine when she's not hosting award shows (spoiler alert: she’s cooking a lot!) and she reveals whether or not she might be gracing us with her presence on TikTok anytime soon!

Check out the full video below, and be sure to tune in to the Kids’ Choice Awards tomorrow (Saturday, May 2) at 8pm on Nickelodeon!

From Access Online:

Victoria Justice Loves All The ‘Victorious’ TikTok Videos: ‘It Makes Me So Happy’

Victoria Justice loves how “Victorious” is living on a decade after its debut! Ahead of her big night hosting Nickelodeon’s first virtual Kids’ Choice Awards, the actress told Access Hollywood about her getting love on TikTok. “It’s so sweet, it makes me really, really happy honestly,” she said of fan videos on the platform. “I saw a video the other day of these girls doing the ‘Make It Shine’ dance that I was doing in the big showcase in the pilot episode, and they learned the whole routine, and it was just like the cutest thing ever!” Victoria also told Access about the time she geeked out over getting a compliment from Rihanna at her very first Kids’ Choice Awards. The 2020 KCAs air May 2 at 8/7c on Nickelodeon.

###

From Hollywood Life:

Victoria Justice Promises There Will BeSlime In ‘Unique’ Kids’ Choice Awards Special & More

The KCAs are going virtual! Victoria Justice is hosting the 2020 Kids’ Choice Awards special and spoke with HL about bringing ‘some light and laughter’ during a dark time and, of course, SLIME!

The ultimate house party is going down on May 2. Nickelodeon will air its first-ever Kids’ Choice Awards 2020: Celebrate Together special to benefit No Kid Hungry. The special will be hosted by Victorious alum Victoria Justice. The winners of the 2020 KCAs will be revealed during the special and stars like Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, BTS, the Avengers: Endgame cast and more will make appearances. The KCAs were originally scheduled for March 22, but the awards show was canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. HollywoodLife talked with Victoria ahead of the special about why it was important to still have the KCAs this year.

“I think the Kids’ Choice Awards bring a lot of joy to people and a lot of joy to kids,” Victoria said. “Even though we’re living in crazy times and we can’t do the whole big awards show because it’s obviously not safe right now and not smart to do, I think Nickelodeon is getting creative and people that are doing all these sorts of shows are so getting creative so why not the honor these people, why not so have fun with it and, and bring some light and some laughter and some slime to people’s living rooms. Even though I am hosting from my own home, I think it’s still going to be really fun. It’s going to be a unique KCAs for sure.”

The Kids’ Choice Awards is without a doubt the most fun awards show every year. Even though the KCAs will be from home this year, kids can still expect it to be a blast. “It’s going to be creative, and it’s going to be a little different,” Victoria continued. “I think it’s going to be cool for people to see because they voted for these people from their homes, and we’re going to get to see them accepting the award from their home. I think it’s just like a really unique perspective and experience and one that we won’t forget.”

When you talk about the KCAs, you have to talk about slime. The Kids’ Choice Awards may look a little different this year, but there will always be slime. “I always have to be a little discreet when talking about the slime because I don’t want to give too much away. That’s always a fun surprise. But I will say that there definitely is slime involved. It’s really fun,” Victoria teased. Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards 2020: Celebrate Together special will air at 8 p.m. on Nickelodeon.

He later served as an artist in the Model Department at Hanna-Barbera Productions working on Cartoon Network’s Dexter’s Laboratory (1996–97), Johnny Bravo (1997–99), and Cow and Chicken (1997). Hartman’s next venture to Nickelodeon Animation Studio led to the creation several television shorts entitled The Fairy OddParents—within the anthology cartoon series Oh Yeah! Cartoons (1998–2001). Nickelodeon later adapted The Fairy OddParents as a full-length animated series beginning in 2001. Hartman would go onto create multiple made-for-television animated and live action films based on the series. Currently, Hartman serves as the showrunner for YouTube’s animated series, Hobbykids Adventures.

Update (5/2) - From Laughing Place:

10 Things We Learned from Butch Hartman During Walt Disney Family Museum’s Happily Ever After Hours Event

The Walt Disney Family Museum’s most recent Happily Ever After Hours event was with an artist who didn’t work for Disney long, although it was a dream of his. Butch Hartman has been an animator, writer, director, and producer for Marvel Productions, Don Bluth Studios, Hanna-Barbera Productions, Cartoon Network, and Nickelodeon. As the creator of The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom, Butch is an expert on creating and running aniamted productions that last for years. Here are ten things we learned from this Q&A with Butch Hartman.

1. The Jungle Book Was A Big Inspiration

Butch grew up in Michigan in the 1960’s where movies and TV felt untouchable to him. He grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons like Wacky Racers, but recognized that there was something special about The Jungle Book when he saw it in theaters. It wasn’t until high school that he started to get serious about wanting to be an animator, inspired a by an upperclassman who dabbled in animation and got accepted to CalArts, passing along a brochure to younger Butch.

2. His CalArts Roommates Changed Disney Animation

Arriving at CalArts in 1983, Butch lived in the dorms and one of his suite mates was Kevin Lima, director of A Goofy Movie, Tarzan, and Enchanted. He was good friends with Kirk Wise, co-director of Beauty and the Beast, and even though Rob Minkoff had already graduated, the future director of The Lion King would pop in to hang out. Even though his Disney connections didn’t get him in the door, his advice to artists is to make friends with other artists in the same field because you can inspired and support each other along the way.

3. Marvel Productions Wasn’t What He Thought it Would Be

After graduating in 1986, Butch’s first professional animation job was for Marvel Productions. He was exciting, thinking he would be working on Spider-Man or the Incredible Hulk, but he was assigned to the original My Little Pony. He did well as a character artist, but when his talents were needed in the story department, he found it difficult to transition and was fired. The lesson taught him to diversify his toolbox and he soon found he loved working in the story department on his next job.

4. He Was There At The Dawn of Cartoon Network

After a few other jobs, Butch Hartman was hired by Hanna-Barbara in 1991, the same year Ted Turner bought the company and started Cartoon Network. Having diversified into story, he spent most of his time on the creative end of shows like Dexter’s Laboratory (1996–97), Johnny Bravo (1997–99), and Cow and Chicken (1997). While there, he made a close connection with the head of Hanna-Barbera, Fred Seibert, a connection that helped him transition to his big break.

5. He Worked with Seth McFarlane on Johnny Bravo

By the time he got to Johnny Bravo, Butch was a writer and director. Another writer on the show was Seth McFarlane, creator of Family Guy. Butch recalled an episode they wrote together called “Johnny Bravo Meets Adam West.” Butch Hartman sold his series to Nickelodeon around the same time Seth McFarlane sold Family Guy to Fox. They would sometimes call each other to bounce ideas off one another, but have lost touch over the years.

6. He Was The Live-Action Reference For John Smith in Pocahontas

In the early 1990’s, Butch Hartman did some acting on the side in a few soap operas and sitcoms, including Days of our Lives and Growing Pains. One day he got a call for an audition as a live-action reference model for Disney, which was perfect because he knew exactly what animators would be looking for. He was cast as Kocoum, but the actor providing reference for John Smith had to leave the project early and Butch filled in for the remainder of the shoot. The best part was that many of the animators working on the film were former CalArts classmates, who would come in and egg him on while he was working.

7. Cartoon Network Turned Down The Fairly OddParents

Because he was under contract with them at the time, he was obligated to pitch any ideas he had to Cartoon Network first. After developing his concept for The Fairly OddParents, he brought it to Cartoon Network who passed on it. The former head of the network, Fred Seibert, was now working with Nickelodeon and he instantly saw the potential for the show, which is how Butch left Cartoon Network and ended up producing several shows for Nickelodeon.

8. Danny Phantom Was Sold Over a Dinner

A year into production on The Fairly OddParents, Nickelodeon executives took Butch out for a celebratory dinner to break the news that they were picking the show up for another season, which went on to run for ten seasons. He already knew that they were looking for a boy’s action show and on a drive from Las Vegas with his mom, he was brainstorming names. Inspired by Johnny Quest, he thought of a cool name for a character; Danny Phantom. Originally conceived as a Ghostbusters-type character, Butch changed him to a superhero and had the concept all fleshed out just waiting to be pitched. During that dinner, the executives asked if he had any other ideas and he pitched it on the spot without any artwork to show. They picked it up then and there and the show ran for three seasons with fans still begging for more a decade later.

9. The Move to Internet Programming

After twenty years at Nickelodeon over the course of several executive changes, Butch was craving the opportunity to be his own boss. He created the Noog Network, an app full of over 30 animated pilot shorts that allow Butch to test ideas on an audience quickly. He’s currently making a YouTube series for PocketWatch called Hobby Kid Adventures. He’s also developing his own streaming service called OAXIS, which has already raised $250,000 through crowd funding initiatives.

10. He’s Writing a Book About How to Pitch a Show in Hollywood

With decades of work in television animation, Butch Hartman is well versed on how to package and pitch an animated series to a network. The book doesn’t yet have a title or a release date target, but he shared some of his wisdom with the Walt Disney Family Museum audience. The concept should be simple and well defined, easy for executives to understand and trust in your vision. It’s best if you can sell the show with just one piece of artwork, although he recommends bringing a “Leave behind,” a 4-5 page document with character descriptions. He also stressed the importance of doing your homework to find out what networks are looking for, cautioning pitching anything similar to a show already on the network. Lastly, having a backup pitch that’s equally developed is smart. A pitch is only twenty-minutes and if they don’t seem interested, you can switch to the other idea. He shared an anecdote of Steve Hillenburg, a biologist who walked into his pitch meeting at Nickelodeon with an aquarium with a yellow sponge inside, his only visual aid that was memorable enough to sell them on Spongebob Square Pants.
