'SpongeBob SquarePants' Star Tom Kenny is 'Proud' That His Character is an LGBTQ+ Ally
'SpongeBob SquarePants' star Tom Kenny is 'proud' that his character is an LGBTQ+ ally
Last summer, Nickelodeon made major waves with a Pride Month tweet that identified everyone's favorite animated sea sponge, SpongeBob SquarePants, as an LGBTQ+ ally. The Bikini Bottom-dwelling, Krabby Patty-flipping SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny) was prominently featured alongside the network's other established LGBTQ characters: Korra from the hit animated series, The Legend of Korra, and Henry Danger & Danger Force star Michael D. Cohen, who described his transgender journey to Time magazine in 2019.
And Kenny couldn't be happier that his animated counterpart has officially come out as an ally. "I am proud that people of all stripes — including people who might at times feel disenfranchised — look to SpongeBob as someone they can identify with and who is inspiration," the actor told Yahoo Entertainment while discussing the third SpongeBob feature film, Sponge on the Run, which is now available to stream on Paramount+. The always-animated Kenny can't resist breaking into his alter ego's adorable voice to signal his approval. "That really warms my little holy heart." (Watch Yahoo! Entertainment's video interview here!)
At the same time, SpongeBob's inclusion in Nickelodeon's social media post reignited the decades-old debate over the character's own sexual orientation — a debate that makes Kenny roll his eyes. "It's just such nonsense," he says of conservative critics like Focus on the Family founder, James Dobson, who accused SpongeBob of appearing in a "pro-homosexual video" in 2005. "It's not even really a part of it. I understand in a different kind of show it would be an issue, but when it's just a comedy? Like when you see the Three Stooges laying in a bed together, you aren't like, 'Wow I wonder if Larry and Moe are an item?' It's just so outside the universe that it's kind of ridiculous. But we do live in a world where anything that can be used as a distracting culture war dividing wedge will be."
Kenny's castmates agree that life is much simpler in their version of life under the sea. "There's no culture war in Bikini Bottom, c'mon," scoffs Clancy Brown, who voices the crusty Mr. Krabs. Adds Bill Fagerbakke — the voice of SpongeBob's best pal and one-time co-parent, Patrick Star — "The world of Bikini Bottom is such its own universe that it's only natural that people are going to latch onto it and bring it into their own universe. That's what good entertainment does, I guess."
Carolyn Lawrence credits late SpongeBob creator, Stephen Hillenburg, with creating an animated world that was inclusive and diverse from the show's 1999 premiere. "It still blows my mind just how amazing he really was," she says of Hillenburg, who always maintained that his characters were asexual. (Hillenburg died in 2018 after being diagnosed with ALS.) "How much life he gave everything, not just in his writing and characters and art, but in how he cast the show, too." For his part, Kenny describes his character's creator as a "warm and loving person," adding: "I think that came out in the show. He created this place that people want to go to and hang out in. It's like the bar in Cheers!"
Sponge on the Run writer/director Tim Hill is one of the artists tasked with carrying on Hillenburg's legacy, and he says that he purposefully avoids the culture war trap. "People are going to think what they think, and they're going to drive some opinion forward — especially in the echo chamber of social media," he says. "These things get blown out of proportion... and don't really matter that much for me. I'm kind of gender blind or whatever when it comes to the character: It's more about what's in their heart for me." And, like Hillenburg, Kenny notes that SpongeBob's heart doesn't have room for romantic feelings anyway. "SpongeBob doesn't really feel lust: He's not like Pepé Le Pew! It's not a part of who he is."

'SpongeBob' EP Explains Why Patrick's Parents Look Different in 'The Patrick Star Show'
Nickelodeon today (March 4) announced The Patrick Star Show, a brand new spin-off from SpongeBob SquarePants starring SpongeBob's BFF, Patrick Star. The animated family comedy series will follow Patrick and the rest of his family as they are constantly disrupted by Patrick’s wild whims and surreal imagination.

Among the members of Patrick's family to feature in The Patrick Star Show will be his parents. However, Patrick's mom and dad have had a big makeover since we last saw them!
In the original SpongeBob series, Patrick's parents are named Margie Bunny Star and Herb Cecil Star. However, in The Patrick Star Show, Patrick's parents will be called by their middle names, Bunny and Cecil, instead.

That's not the only major change. In SpongeBob, Patrick's parents look very much like him, except wearing a dress and having a moustache. However, in The Patrick Star Show, Bunny and Cecil will look totally different!
Vincent Waller, who co-executive produces both series, explained why Patrick's parents will have a different design in The Patrick Star Show on Twitter:
"Cecil & Bunny, they are his mom and dad. We felt the original iterations of the characters, while they worked for that episode, they were boring as characters. They were NOT entertaining or fun. These two are so much more fun. I can't wait till you get to meet them."

The Patrick Star Show follows a younger Patrick Star living at home with his family, where he hosts his own show for the neighborhood from his television-turned-bedroom. His little sister, Squidina, works behind the scenes to make sure Patrick’s show is always running smoothly, while his parents, Bunny and Cecil and his grandpa, GrandPat, each support Patrick in their own hilariously absurd ways. The Star family’s unpredictable adventures often inform, integrate, and sometimes even interfere with Patrick’s TV show, but one thing is for sure: his bizarre life always makes for great television!
Initially picked up for 13 episodes, The Patrick Star Show is set to premiere on Nickelodeon this summer!
Longtime voice of Patrick Star, Bill Fagerbakke lends his voice as the young adult Patrick alongside new cast members: Tom Wilson (SpongeBob SquarePants, Back to the Future) as Cecil Star, Patrick’s fun-loving, happy-go-lucky dad who always puts his family first; Cree Summer (Rugrats, A Different World, Inspector Gadget) as Bunny Star, Patrick’s loving, sea star mom who is a kooky oddball; Jill Talley (SpongeBob SquarePants) as Squidina Star, Patrick’s eight-year-old little sister who sees herself as Patrick’s executive producer for his imaginary TV show; and Dana Snyder (The Thundermans, Welcome to the Wayne, The Penguins of Madagascar, Chowder) as GrandPat Star, Patrick’s genius grandpat, the most intelligent member of the Star family. Summer also voices Grandma Tentacles, Squidward’s grandma.
Additional cast members include veteran actors Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward Tentacles), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Mr. Lawrence (Plankton).
Marc Ceccarelli (SpongeBob SquarePants), Vincent Waller (SpongeBob SquarePants) and Jennie Monica (SpongeBob SquarePants) are co-executive producers of the series. The Patrick Star Show is developed for television by Claudia Spinelli, SVP of Animation Development, Nickelodeon, with production overseen by Kelley Gardner, Vice President, Current Series, Animation, Nickelodeon.
