The 'iCarly' Reboot to Feature More Adult Situations

The Stars Of iCarly Dish On The Reboot

The reboot of iCarly is definitely going to be more grown-up than the original series.

“It’s basically an Andrew Dice Clay concert,” Jerry Trainor, reprising his role as Spencer Shay, joking told Page Six. “No, [but] we’re going to toe that line, you know what I mean? It’s not going to be super-raw … but yeah, there’s going to be sexual situations.

“And you know, I say ‘damn it’ in the trailer, which had everyone in a tizzy, but you know we’re grown-ups.”

The original iCarly, which ran on Nickelodeon from 2007 to 2012 starred Miranda Cosgrove as Carly, a teenager who creates the titular web show with her pals.

Nathan Kress, who played nerdy Freddie Benson, told Page Six that the show has evolved.

“This is an adult show and it’s not specifically for kids,” he stresses. “And that’s been exciting for us — to just see where these characters from a kid’s show would be and where they are in their life now, 10 years later. But in a very realistic, non-glossy way.”

Kress, now 28, confesses that he had some adoring fans the first time around because “I think geek chic was really coming into its own during that phase” but notes that he’s seen things drop off.

“Something weird happened where, since becoming a father, that all just sort of went away,” he says, laughing.

And Trainor, 42, who has the demeanor of an excitable Labradoodle, is thrilled to be back.

“I feel young. I feel ageless,” he crows. “I feel like I am stepping back into comfy shoes. I love multi-cam. It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.”

One person who definitely won’t be back for the adult yuks is Jennette McCurdy, who played Sam Puckett.

McCurdy, 28, confessed in a recent episode of a podcast she hosts called Empty Inside that she’s “ashamed” of her past acting career.

“My experience with acting is, I’m so ashamed of the parts I’ve done in the past,” she said. “I resent my career in a lot of ways. I feel so unfulfilled by the roles that I played and felt like it was the most cheesy, embarrassing [thing].”

The new iCarly series will address Sam's absence from the pilot episode.

The series will also feature two new cast members, Laci Mosley as Harper, Carly’s roommate and best friend, and Jaidyn Triplett, who will portray Millicent, Freddie’s snarky and social media-savvy stepdaughter. However, the original cast notes that the door is always open for McCurdy to return to the show.

iCarly will premiere this Thursday, June 17th with three episodes. The remaining 10 will then drop weekly, exclusively on Paramount+. Try it FREE today at ParamountPlus.com - use promo code "MOVIES" for a 30-day free trial!

From Variety:

Animation Booms

This year’s Annecy Festival, the world’s most important animation event, catches the industry in dramatic sea change. One pivot: New studio streamers are driving a massive increased demand for animation. The business is booming like never before. From the past year, Nickelodeon has hired nearly 700 people to work on its shows as it scales up, says Nickelodeon Animation’s Ramsey Naito. “There’s a volume of work being produced that we’ve never had before,” adds Eléanor Coleman, at Blue Spirit, a major French studio.

The Business is Going Truly Global

The pandemic, it’s almost a cliche, has accelerated change. Only about 30% of the crew on one new Nickelodeon show which started production during the pandemic have met in person, Naito notes. Animation has “gone completely global,” Coleman adds. There was a time when people used to work for hire in Indonesia or China. Now, says Coleman, all the top talent in all of the world can live and work anywhere. Competition is global, our reach is global. Animation has really woken up to that.” The consequences of these two factors – the boom, going global – play out throughout this year’s Annecy.
