Just over 30 years ago – on April 30, 1992 – a time capsule was buried at Nickelodeon Studios at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida that was set to be opened after 50 years - on April 30, 2042.
Unfortunately, the studio closed in 2005, and the Nickelodeon Time Capsule temporarily dug up and reburied at Nickelodeon Suites Resort [the Nick Hotel] in Orlando, before being dug up again when the hotel rebranded and reburied across the country at the new Nickelodeon Studios in Burbank, California.
Now, the original Nickelodeon Studios time capsule cover is now up for auction.
Update (9/29) - Unsurprisingly, the Nickelodeon Time Capsule was one of the most sought-after pieces in the auction, and sold last for $19,200!
Part of Heritage Auctions’ The Art of Anime and Everything Cool Signature Auction Vol. III that runs Sept. 23-26, 2022, the one-of-a-kind 42-inch (and nearly 45-pound) cover reads, “The Nickelodeon time capsule was buried on this spot on April 30, 1992, as a gift to kids of the future.”
The cover’s edges are worn, there’s chipped paint, and a few scuffs, and scratches, but considering it was outside at Nickelodeon Studios Orlando from 1992 to 2005, it's in good condition.

Nickelodeon Studios Orlando - Time Capsule Cover (Universal/Nickelodeon, 1992). When Universal Studios in Orlando opened on June 7, 1990, Nickelodeon Studios opened alongside it. Not only was Universal a place where you could "ride the movies," but Nickelodeon was the only chance a kid in the '90s had at getting up close and personal with some of their favorite shows. Two years after the new Orlando site opened, they placed a time capsule in the ground. The capsule cover reads, "The Nickelodeon time capsule was buried on this spot on April 30, 1992 as a gift to kids of the future." Among the items placed in the time capsule was Home Alone and Back to the Future on VHS tape, Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em CD by MC Hammer and Michael Jackson's Dangerous CD, a pair of Roller Blades and Reebok Pump Sneakers, A jar of Gak, an official Joey Lawrence "Whoa! 92" hat, an issue of Nickelodeon Magazine, a Ren and Stimpy t-shirt, a piece of the Berlin Wall, a Barbie Doll, Nintendo Game Boy, a Skateboard, some Twinkies and a stick of gum (brand unknown) as well as a few current newspaper articles and books. The plan was to open the time capsule on April 30, 2042 in Florida but -- all good things must come to an end, and Nickelodeon Studios was no exception. Their studios at Universal eventually closed and the time capsule was moved. It's now buried at Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, California, and we can assume this will be its final resting place. The official opening date of the capsule is still April 30, 2042 -- now in Burbank. The metal time capsule cover measures almost 42" across and weighs almost 45 pounds! It's a substantial piece. It would make a stunning conversation piece in any home, and it displays wonderfully both on the floor (as it was originally installed) and on the wall as a dramatic piece of wall art. It exhibits edge wear with some paint chipping, scuffs and scratches. Considering this was used outside, exposed to the elements, the time capsule cover is in Good condition. Truly a one-of-a-kind!

On April 30, 1992, Mike O'Malley (Get The Picture, Nickelodeon GUTS, Global Guts) and Joey Lawrence (Blossom) buried that time capsule stuffed with '90s kid treasures deep beneath the earth around the slime geyser at Nickelodeon Studios in Orlando, Florida.

After more than a decade of fulfilling childhood dreams, Nickelodeon Suites Resort in Orlando, Florida will slime someone for the very last time on Tuesday night.
The hotel, east of Walt Disney World, will officially become the Holiday Inn Resort Orlando Suites and Waterpark on Wednesday 1st June 2016, following Nickelodeon and Urban Commons mutually agreeing to not extend their partnership.

"To me it's kind of sad because that's what the kids love," said Lynne Lopez of Miami to the Orlando Sentinel. "I think the kids come here so they can experience the characters."
It was Lopez's second time staying at the hotel. She didn't know when she initially booked the weekend trip she'd also be saying goodbye.
Since last year, the 777-room property has undergone a major renovation, including the slow removal of everything green and orange, the colors that clearly distinguished the hotel as a Nickelodeon experience.
The $30 million renovation includes a total refurbishment of the lagoon pool deck, updating suites to a more neutral color palette and the end of all Nick experiences.
Most of the rooms have already been updated. Those that haven't will be completed by the end of the year.
Nickelodeon experiences like dinner with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, mass slimings on the pool deck and live performances of the networks hit Double Dare game show were originally scheduled to end in April 2016.

Robert Soto, the hotel's director of entertainment and recreation, said the official rebranding was delayed to make Memorial Day weekend the hotel's final hoorah.
As part of the renovations, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Laser Lockdown is being rebranded as the Batman Laser Challenge, in which challengers having to navigate through a web of lasers as they train with Batman to protect the citizens of Gotham City from The Joker.
"We have seen lifelong Nickelodeon fans make the trek out here to experience Nickelodeon one more time here in Orlando," said Soto.

Although Memorial Day has historically been a busy weekend for the hotel, fans flocked to be part of the final blowout, Soto said. He said the hotel was almost completely booked as of Friday night.
Soto, who has worked at the hotel for the last decade, said it's a bittersweet experience to say goodbye to beloved characters like SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer.
Bidding farewell to other key Nick experiences is equally sad, said Soto.
"We have slimed and pied countless kids and families throughout the years," he said.
Employees who played characters will now be part of new entertainment activities under the Holiday Inn banner, said Soto.
Some people staying at the hotel this weekend were experiencing the hotel's messy brand of fun for the first time.
"Slime. I got to get the slime," said Samuel Boone, who came up from Miami to celebrate his stepdaughter's birthday. "I drove up here to get slimed. Four hours to get slimed."
Nickelodeon Suites Resort will hold their last mass sliming on Tuesday 31st May 2016 on the Lagoon Pool Deck.

As the new site will house both live action and Nicktoon productions, the studio will also officially change its name from Nickelodeon Animation Studio to simply Nickelodeon Studios.
The opening will coincide with Nickelodeon Animation's 25th anniversary in 2016 - the networks three original animated series, "Rugrats", "Doug" and "Ren & Stimpy" premiered on Sunday 11th August 1991 - and one of the goals for the new facility is to draw upon that history.
The creative campus is designed as an open and inviting space where employees feel the freedom and inspiration of an artists' retreat. Among the perks will be an on-site restaurant and coffee shop, a central courtyard with designated lecture space and a music room.
A Nickelodeon Studios app will include a rundown of events for the day including guest speakers, tours and screenings, and allow for easy communication and scheduling across all departments. Observing that creative ideas spring more frequently from casual interactions than forced meetings, Nickelodeon wants to seize the opportunity for greater collaboration and mobility between Nick’s various production arms.
More than just a base for Nickelodeon, Nickelodeon will open the studio up to the community with tours and programs targeted at aspiring animators, aficionados of the form and industry professionals.

Nickelodeon's iconic slime made its first appearance on You Can't Do That on Television, the Canadian-made sketch comedy show that ran from 1979 to 1990. From there, it became a staple of almost everything the network did, with regular slimings on many programs, at the Kids' Choice Awards and at the Nickelodeon Studios attraction at Universal Studios Florida.
According to Bill Buchanan, a crew member on You Can’t Do That on Television for its whole run, the slime was invented early in the show’s history. He was working in the props department one weekend when he got a rundown of items needed for an upcoming show. One of the sketches called for “this kinda disgusting slimy green stuff,” but there were no further details, or even an indication of how the stuff would be used.
Another propmaster, Paul Copping, was given the task of making the slime, and even after asking the director and the scriptwriter, he couldn’t get any more details on what the slime was suppose to be. So, he just went with his gut and mixed up a whole garbage can full of slime. Buchanan says he knows the color came from green latex paint, but didn’t know what else was in it. It smelled and looked foul. People avoided the can while walking through the studio. Bits of sausage may have been floating in it.
The day the slime scene was shot, the propmasters learned the slime's purpose. It was supposed to be dumped on one of the actors. There was an argument. The producers wanted to go ahead and do the scene, but the prop guys were worried there was something in there that could hurt the actor or make them sick. The sketch got pulled until a new slime could be made. While the old stuff stayed in the garbage can and festered in a corner of the studio, Buchanan, Copping and company got started on a new formula that could get in someone’s eyes and mouth without causing any problems.
This second batch was made mostly from green Jell-O that had been set in the fridge, then pulled out the day before shooting to liquefy and get mixed with flour.
That slime recipe was used for a while, but it required too much preparation time. If the crew had to have the slime ready earlier than expected, it wasn’t fluid enough and had solid chunks of Jell-O in it. They needed a way to make lots of slime on short notice, and turned to Quaker Oats Crème of Wheat for the next generation of slime. They’d basically stir the cereal up cold on the spot in whatever amount they needed, and then dump in green food coloring. The problem with that recipe was that it turned pasty as it dried, and the actors found they couldn’t get it out of their hair. They countered that problem by adding a couple of drops of baby shampoo to the mixture, and stopping tape after a sliming so the actors could rush off the set and into the showers before the slime hardened.

Slime evolved for other shows over the years. As Double Dare host Marc Summers explained, most of the slime used on his shows was made of “vanilla pudding, applesauce, oatmeal, green food coloring, and by the third day, anything else that was on the obstacle course.” Yum.
Every Item Inside the Time Capsule Nickelodeon Buried in 1992
In 1992, Nickelodeon got together with the Kids World Council (also known as “minors who were allowed to call in and vote”) to decide what was most important to kids at the time. Then they assembled those items, put them in a big orange time capsule, and buried it in front of Nickelodeon Studios in Universal Studios ["the first world headquarters for kids"]. Here’s a list of everything inside:

This appears to have been unplanned. Mike O'Malley and Joey Lawrence both looked baffled about how to remove the tape from the camera, so the whole setup was tossed in at the last minute.
After Nickelodeon Studios closed in 2005, the time capsule was moved to Nickelodeon Suites Resort [Nick Hotel/Nickelodeon Hotel] in Orlando. It will be removed and opened April 30, 2042 — 50 years after it was first buried. We promise full team coverage that day.
