'Abbott Elementary' Creator and Star Quinta Brunson Reveals How Nickelodeon Magazine Inspired Her to Write TV Shows

Quinta Brunson, the creator and star of the hit comedy series Abbott Elementary, has revealed how Nickelodeon's iconic Nickelodeon Magazine helped ignite her passion for writing TV shows!

Quinta Brunson | Credit: Jonny Marlow

As a child, Brunson never imagined that the job ‘TV writer’ even existed, until her father’s boss mentioned his daughter was one.

The daughter, Elisa Zuritsky, was then a writer on Sex and the City, and when Brunson was in her early teens, Zuritsky gifted her a Nickelodeon Magazine subscription. “I was like, ‘Wait, if someone I know can be a TV writer, then maybe I can be a TV writer,’ Brunson told Deadline, adding "That Nickelodeon magazine was very important to me, because it was the next level. It was beyond just watching TV. The magazine went behind the scenes of these TV shows.”

You can check out Brunson's conversation with Deadline in full here!

Animation Writer and Story Editor Anne D. Bernstein Passes Away

A pioneer for women in animation, the trailblazing funny lady began her career in the ‘90s, becoming one of very first women in the writer’s room; she worked on numerous series as a script writer including Daria, was senior editor of Nickelodeon Magazine, and her illustrations were seen in Redbook and The New York Times.

Anne D. Bernstein, who passed away last Tuesday, February 8, was a former head writer for MTV Animation Development, whose work included writing on Nickelodeon's 'KaBlam!' and MTV’s ‘Daria’ and ‘MTV Downtown.’ Image from ‘Daria’ courtesy of MTV.

Comedy/animation writer and story editor Anne D. Bernstein passed away on February 8, 2022 after a long illness. Best known for her work on the Daria series, she was, according to Baboon Animation’s Mike de Seve, “… a true pioneer for women in animation writing.”

According to Bernstein’s LinkedIn page, she had a wide reaching and varied career including head writer for MTV Animation Development. She was a script writer for KaBlam!Angelo Rules, Daria, MTV Downtown, Hey Monie, Backyardigans, Viva Pinata, Tutenstein, and Johnny and The Sprites. Additionally, she was a senior editor and comic book editor for Nickelodeon Magazine, and a contributing writer for several publications including SPY, National Lampoon, and Paper. Bernstein also blogged for Channel Frederator and Roadside America, and her Illustrations were seen in Redbook, The New York Times, Good Housekeeping, and others. Bernstein was also the author of The Daria Diaries.

Image from ‘Daria’ courtesy of MTV.

Mike de Seve, a close friend, and admirer of Bernstein, shared a tribute with Animation World Network:

"The hilarious animation writer Anne D. Bernstein died last week from the not-hilarious Parkinson’s disease. As one of the very few, very first female writers in animation, she was a trailblazer, and a friend to many of us.

I knew Anne since our days together at MTV Animation and had the great pleasure to have her on my script teams for several series, first at 4Kids and later at Baboon Animation. Anne’s work on the groundbreaking MTV series Daria is probably her most beloved.

In a career beginning in the ‘90s, Anne said that she had never been in a writers’ room where she wasn’t the only woman. But bravely into that room she went, again and again and, in doing so, Anne truly helped change the rules of entry.

As a comedy writer, Anne always brought her A game, digging up humor in places the rest of us weren’t even bothering to look. In one script, she named a retirement home for actors “Sitting Ovations.”

Every day I worked with her, Anne turned that old, ignorant industry belief on its head, that women weren’t funny, by being as funny as anyone else in the room — and so much more professional it made us crazy.

Sadly, her illness hospitalized her before she could ever be part of an actual 50-50 writers’ room, or a room that represents all the voices in our culture. But for those of you who are walking in the door now, you should know that she was one of the very first to open it. And her dedication to quality and craft kept it open for the next folks.

Anne, if you’re out there and you’re wondering what the hell your life meant — writing a bunch of jokes on a bunch of cartoons, then getting taken out way too early — know that you have made a great difference for many to follow, and we’re all better for it.

May Anne’s legacy inspire women writers — all writers — to tune out the ignorance around you and instead try a little harder, go that extra mile to make your work great. And even when the room is stacked against you, don’t be afraid to slay."

Friend and colleague Michael Mennies shared also shared a tribute with AWN:

"I got a letter today from Kevin Strader, who worked together with Anne, myself and Mike de Seve in a writer’s room and he said, 'What a character. What a person. Whenever she was in the room, her qualities made me feel like a poser. But, happily so.'

I couldn’t agree more. At the risk of insulting the other fantastic writers I have had the good fortune of working with, Anne was simply the best, both as a member of a story room where her carefully chosen suggestions always contributed to a better story, and as a writer working on her own. She had a fountain of original ideas for episodes, professional to a point she made the rest of us look like slackers, a writer who could explain her reasoning and keep working through trouble spots until she figured them out, and a someone who was just laugh out loud funny to read. Her writing always had her unique comical voice in it, yet that voice did not go for laughs that went against the integrity of the characters or the show’s tone.

I was introduced to Anne by Mike DeSeve in 2011. Mike and I were story editing a show called Kikoriki together, and he thought Anne would be a good addition to the team. Anne was not the chattiest in the room, but it was always clear she was paying attention, because when she contributed to a story her ideas moved things in the right direction.

From 2017-2019 I worked with Anne on Kit^n^Kate. The show is pre-school, which was certainly not Anne’s natural place for comedy. But she was just fantastic. She was able to write stories little kids could understand and enjoy that also played at a second level for the parents. Like her story 'The Missing Stink,' about a skunk who had been faking his foul stench his whole life by taping smelly cheese under his armpits. Determined to lead an authentic life, he goes out in search of his inner stink. And, oh yeah, it had a musical number modeled after 'My Shot' from Hamilton. That episode still cracks me up."

Acclaimed Punk Rock Artist John Holmstrom Provides Cover For Issue #7 Of Nickelodeon Magazine

Original Papercutz Press Release via Papercutz.com:

Acclaimed Punk Rock Artist John Holmstrom Provides Cover for Latest Issue of NICKELODEON MAGAZINE

Hey ho, let's go! To an awesome metal concert. In the latest issue of NICKELODEON MAGAZINE (on sale December 28th), Nickelodeon cartoon stars head to a rockin' music spectacular. The Tuff Skulls finally get their big break, opening for the world famous Mega Maidenz. But when S & C enter an air guitar contest at the show, they shred so hard they literally blow the roof off the joint! What happens next? You'll have to pick up the issue to find out.

Of course, if you're going to capture that true rock and roll spirit, it helps to work with artists who are as much a part of the scene as the music themselves. That's why Papercutz reached out John Holmstrom, cover artist for the legendary Ramones' albums "Rocket to Russia" and "Road to Ruin" and a co-founder of the groundbreaking PUNK Magazine.

"My old friend (Papercutz Editor-in-Chief) Jim Salicrup reached out to me because he thought I'd get a kick out of this story. When I read it, I was reminded me of my own early experiences with rock and roll," noted Holmstrom, "So I was happy to contribute a piece that helped convey the fun and excitement of being in a band. And for the record, I think Sanjay and Craig are pretty punk!"

Holmstrom is no stranger to comics , having created Bosko "America's least favorite cartoon character" and contributed comic stripo material to numerous publications including SPIN and HEAVY METAL.

"John is an art and music legend," exclaimed Papercutz Editor-in-Chief Jim Salicrup, "and we're proud to feature his first national magazine cover. There's no doubt in my mind that when the Tuff Skulls finally get signed to major label, they'll be tapping John for some album cover art. Or iTunes art. Or whatever way kids will be interacting with art and music in the near future. No matter what the medium, John's talent will let them know, this stuff rocks!"

NICKELODEON MAGAZINE #7, featuring Holmstrom's cover and the Sanjay and Craig story "Guitarmed and Dangerous" is on sale December 28th at newsstands and bookstores everywhere.

Papercutz Announces Innovative Library Marketing Program For Nickelodeon Magazine

Official Papercutz Press Release via Papercutz.com:

PAPERCUTZ ANNOUNCES INNOVATIVE LIBRARY MARKETING PROGRAM FOR NICKELODEON MAGAZINE!

New Initiative Will Provide Free Magazines to Libraries That Support Graphic Novel Programming

Thursday 6th August 2015

Budget-crunched librarians will soon be receiving some respite thanks to a new program from Papercutz. The "#1 kids' graphic novel publisher" announced today that they will be supplying 100 free copies of NICKELODEON MAGAZINE to libraries that support comics programming. It's part of an effort by the publisher to fuel a growing trend in the school and public library space– "ComicCons" and other events focused on the fastest growing category in publishing – graphic novels.

"Librarians have been on the forefront of the graphic novel explosion", explained Papercutz's President, Terry Nantier. "And forward thinking librarians have tapped in to the interest surrounding events like Free Comic Book day and ComicCon International to attract kids and parents to their facilities. We think it's an incredibly positive thing for graphic novels in general and we wanted to find a way to 'give back' to the community. With the launch of NICKELODEON MAGAZINE this summer, we realized we had the perfect vehicle to promote comics readership and help librarians connect with kids who might be just beginning to become graphic novel readers."

Comic book conventions are well known for a variety of attractions including creator appearances, costumes and, of course, exclusive promotional material from publishers. While many librarians have reached out to the comics creative community for appearances at events and patrons have picked up the costuming challenge, promotional items have been handled on an ad hoc basis, depending on the largesse of publishers or individual creators. This new program ensures that no comics-themed event will have to do without giveaways that incentivize reading.

"Nickelodeon has always been known for creating great comics material", noted Papercutz Editor-in-Chief Jim Salicrup. "And we're proud to continue that tradition with our new publication. I'm personally excited by the opportunity to get the great work of our writers and artists out in front of the biggest possible audience possible. The magazine is going to be a great way for kids to sample our graphic novels and be introduced to some of the fantastic Nickelodeon characters."

Interested librarians simply need to contact Papercutz VP of Marketing, Sven Larsen six to eight weeks before their event. As soon as Papercutz receives a librarian's request (including details of the planned event) they will dispatch 100 copies of the latest issue of NICKELODEON MAGAZINE absolutely free (the library just has to pay for shipping).

"Papercutz graphic novels are already some of the highest circulating titles in libraries", explained Larsen, VP of Marketing for Papercutz. "But we're always looking to grow our audience and the readership for comics. It's part of why we partnered with Nickelodeon in the first place. The new NICKELODEON MAGAZINE is another great way to get kids started on reading and the perfect introduction to the world of graphic novels. We're excited that it will be a cornerstone of our efforts to help libraries expand their graphic novel programming and we want this program to be a giant 'thank you' to all the librarians who are helping to create the next generation of comics fans!"

Nickelodeon and Papercutz to Team Up on New Graphic Novel Line; to Relaunch Nickelodeon Magazine

Original Nickelodeon and Papercutz Press Release via Papercutz.com:

NICKELODEON AND PAPERCUTZ ANNOUNCE "FIRST LOOK DEAL"

Kids' Media Powerhouse and Leading Comics Publisher to Team Up on New Graphic Novel Line

February 5, 2015 – New York, NY – Nickelodeon and Papercutz, the industry leader in children's graphic novel publishing, are proud to announce an innovative first look deal, the first agreement of its kind that the network has made with a graphic novel publisher. The partnership will give Papercutz the first option to adapt all-new Nickelodeon original properties into comics and graphic novels.

The new partnership will allow Papercutz to work with Nickelodeon at the earliest stages of property development, ensuring that the graphic novels based on these new programs are as faithful to the original look and spirit of the series as possible. In addition, Papercutz will be able to introduce properties to book stores and the comic book market much closer to the debut of new animated shows.

"Papercutz's strong track record with licensed properties for kids made them our ideal choice for a publishing partner," explained Linda Lee, VP of Nickelodeon Domestic Publishing. "As we grow our stable of original animated properties, we wanted to work with a company that could reach the broadest possible audience. We're excited to work with the Papercutz team and we look forward to adding the Nickelodeon characters to one of the most diverse lists offered by any children's publisher."

These strong properties are just the start of the ambitious Nickelodeon/Papercutz publishing program. Plans call for two more series to debut in the first half of 2016, with further series to be announced at a later date. In addition, to its ambitious graphic novel publishing slate, Papercutz also plans to publish an all-new NICKELODEON MAGAZINE. The new version of the magazine will preview the comics content that will be featured in the graphic novels, debut new properties in comics form and also feature a variety of games, puzzles and other activities for kids. The first issue of the new NICKELODEON MAGAZINE is scheduled for release in late June 2015.

The first two properties slated for launch in Papercutz books are Nickelodeon's hits, SANJAY AND CRAIG and BREADWINNERS.

SANJAY AND CRAIG is the story of an adventurous 12-year-old boy who proves the old adage: there's nothing you can't accomplish (or destroy) as long as your best friend is a talking snake. The adventures of this dude-snake duo have been a ratings smash for Nickelodeon with the series ranking as the #2 animated show across all TV among kids 2 to 11. SANJAY AND CRAIG is set to make its graphic novel debut in September 2015, just in time for the premiere of the series' third season on Nickelodeon.

BREADWINNERS features the adventures of SwaySway and Buhdeuce, two carefree ducks who fly around in a super sweet rocket van, delivering bread to hungry beaks everywhere. Like SANJAY AND CRAIG, BREADWINNERS has been an instant hit with kids. These "quazy ducks" will join the Papercutz lineup with their first graphic novel in October 2015 and comics will never be the same!

"Our partners at Nickelodeon have created some terrific characters that really reach out to kids," said Papercutz Editor-in-Chief Jim Salicrup. "And we can't wait to translate that magic into the graphic novel format. Of course, the best part of this deal is getting to see what they're working on next! SANJAY AND CRAIG and BREADWINNERS are just the start of a really exciting publishing program that's sure to keep kids thoroughly entertained and clamoring for more!"

Alternative Comics To Release Book Featuring The Complete Collection Of Sam Henderson's Popular Nickelodeon Magazine Comic Strip "Scene But Not Heard" In September 2013

The American graphic novel and comic book publisher Alternative Comics has announced the exciting Nickelodeon Magazine news in the following Press Release, from Alternative Comics's official website, indyworld.com, that they will release a book featuring the complete collection of Sam Henderson's popular Nickelodeon Magazine comic strip "Scene But Not Heard" - which ran from the very first issue in 1993 until Nick Mag's final days in 2009 - in September 2013! Alternative Comics will publish the title, "Scene But Not Heard", in conjunction with Top Shelf.

The Nickelodeon Magazine comic strip "Scene But Not Heard" told the going-ons of a pink man and a bear who love to pull pranks on each other. As the strip's name suggests, the comic is made entirely of pictures, with no dialogue or sound effects. In the magazine's tenth anniversary issue, there was a "blooper strip" where the man and bear are talking. There was also an advertisement for a Scene But Not Heard musical in Nick Mag's "Grampa and Julie" comic:
Alternative Comics Announces 2013 Comic Book and Graphic Novel Releases

Long-associated artists Karl Stevens, James Kochalka and Sam Henderson scheduled for new books.

Steven Cerio, Elaine M. Will and Kevin Scalzo added to the roster. Alternative Comics anthology relaunches.

Cupertino, California; April 16, 2013 -- Alternative Comics, the independent comic book publisher operated from 1993 until 2008 by Jeff Mason, and since June 2012 by industry veteran Marc Arsenault, officially relaunches with a full publishing slate for 2013.

Debuting in May is Karl Stevens' Failure, the follow-up to his 2011 book The Lodger — a Los Angeles Times Book Prize finalist. Failure was originally announced for a February 2013 release but was postponed and remade to accommodate for changes and additions to the book necessitated by the cancelation of the strip by The Boston Phoenix and the closing of the paper mere weeks later. Stevens will be promoting the book at numerous events, including the Stumptown Comics Fest and the Toronto Comics Arts Festival.

Alternative Comics’ flagship anthology returns as a twice-yearly comic with more pages in June with the release of Alternative Comics #4. Alternative Comics—previously appearing as a Free Comic Book Day offering—showcases the best indie, web and zine artists of today's underground. Cover art by Mike Bertino (Trigger). Comics by Theo Ellsworth (The Understanding Monster) & Craig Thompson (Blankets, Habibi), Sam Alden (Eighth Grade), James Kochalka [...], Sam Henderson (Magic Whistle), Noah Van Sciver (The Hypo), Grant Snider (Incidental Comics), Alex Schubert (Blobby Boys), Andy Ristaino (Adventure Time), and Allison Cole (Never Ending Summer). The popular Inkstuds podcast launches a regular feature in the magazine with an interview with and comics by David Lasky. Alternative Comics #4 will debut at the Toronto Comics Arts Festival.

Next in the lineup is a pair of books by beloved funny man Sam Henderson. In August, Sam celebrates the 20th anniversary of his Magic Whistle series with the release of Volume 2, number 13. The long running comic has returned to bi-annual status and will regularly feature guest contributors. This issue’s guests are Lizz Hickey and David Goldin. Appearing in September is the release of the complete collection of Sam’s popular Nickelodeon Magazine comic strip “Scene But Not Heard “— which ran from the debut issue in 1993 until its final days in 2009. Scene But Not Heard is Co-Published with Top Shelf Productions®. Sam will be appearing at the Small Press Expo (SPX) in Bethesda Maryland, and other events to promote the books.

For many years Alternative Comics, Top Shelf Productions and Highwater Books supported the recipients of the Xeric Foundation grants by distributing the awarded books to the comic book direct market. The final Xeric grants were handed out in May 2012. One of the very last books to be released from that batch is Look Straight Ahead by Elaine M. Will; and it will be distributed through Alternative Comics. This is an astounding debut graphic novel from this young Canadian artist. DC Comics’ writer Gail Simone says of the book, “Look Straight Ahead is the comic I didn’t know I couldn’t live without”. Look Straight Ahead will be in shops in October, 2013. Elaine will be debuting the book at the Toronto Comics Arts Festival in May.

In November, Eisner Award winner James Kockalka releases the complete Fancy Froglin strips—previously available only to online subscribers and partially issued by Alternative in 2003. This is the entire dirty work — Fancy Froglin Uncensored. Fancy Froglin is an ineffably cute happy little frog that [...] purely innocent. And he loves bunnies. Most important, he's really funny. Sure to please fans of Kochalka[...].

Coming in winter 2013/2014 from Alternative will be Alternative Comics #5, the Complete Sugar Booger by Kevin Scalzo and Sunbeam on the Astronaut by Steven Cerio. Further details to be announced.

Susan Danaher Informs DPAA Board She Will Not Be Renewing Contract As President & CEO When It Expires On March 31

Will Continue to Work Closely with Organization as Advisor to Board of Directors

NEW YORK, March 14, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Digital Place-based Advertising Association (DPAA) announced today that Susan Danaher has informed the organization's board of directors she will not be renewing her contract as president and chief executive officer when it expires on March 31. She will continue to be active in the organization as an advisor to the board.

Mike DiFranza , DPAA board chairman and president/founder of Captivate Network, said Danaher informed the board of her intentions more than 30 days ago and that a nominating committee, including Danaher, has identified several high-level executives as candidates to fill the position.

DiFranza said, "It is DPAA's policy to bring in a very high-level executive from within the media industry to run the organization and, as such, we expect to have periodic, natural leadership transitions. Under Sue's guidance, DPAA as an organization moved to – and well beyond – the next level, and it's no coincidence that our entire industry did as well. Her successor will take over a well-oiled machine that is ready to address many exciting opportunities on the horizon. Our nominating committee already has identified several terrific candidates from within our industry and we expect to fill the post soon."

Danaher said, "I greatly enjoyed my two-and-a-half years at the helm and am proud of the role DPAA played in our industry's growth and accomplishments during that time. This is an exciting time for our industry. We are arriving at a positive inflection point, with new technology impacting scalability, targetability and the overall impact of digital place-based campaigns. I look forward to taking on a corporate operational role within the digital place-based media industry, and to continuing to work closely with the DPAA as an advisor to the board and member of the nominating committee formed to select my successor."

Danaher joined DPAA as president in September 2010 and during her tenure significantly increased the profile of digital place-based media. The organization's membership grew to 45 companies under Danaher's watch, a gain of 150%, and the DPAA's annual Digital Media Summit in the fall set attendance records in each year under her leadership.

Before joining the DPAA, Danaher sat on its board in 2007 and 2008, when the organization was known as OVAB. At the time, she was president of Reactrix Systems, Inc. Reactrix provided interactive media experiences, based on projection technology, in shopping malls and theater lobbies.

Danaher joined Reactrix from MTV Networks, where she spent 13 years in a variety of ad sales roles. As executive vice president/general sales manager from 2001-06, she oversaw sales for Nickelodeon, Nick on CBS, Nick@Nite, Noggin, TV Land and Spike TV, as well as for various MTV Networks web properties, Nick Recreations and Tours, Nickelodeon Hotel and the Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. Family magazines.

Before joining MTV Networks, Danaher was vice president, western region ad sales manager for Turner Broadcasting Company, overseeing national sales for TBS, TNT and Cartoon Network.

Danaher also served as an account executive in the ad sales group at USA Network, following six years on the agency side of the business with Benton & Bowles (media planning) and Young & Rubicam (media research).
