First Lady Michelle Obama will be appearing on the popular tween Disney show iCarly, but it is not to show off her acting chops.

The First Lady will be making her appearance on Jan. 16 on Nickelodeon at 7:30 p.m., but don’t expect her to promote the show --- although she does say it is a big hit with her daughters Sasha and Malia. She will be appearing as herself, and she will be continuing a longstanding mission to support our troops abroad.

The plot in the episode centers on the disappointment Carly Shay, the protagonist of the series, experiences when her dad cannot return home from active duty abroad. After Carly and her dad connect via the web, Michelle Obama makes her appearance to offer support to the heartbroken girl.

iCarly is an American sitcom about a girl who creates her own show web show – hence iCarly – with the help of her best friends Sam and Freddie. It stars Miranda Cosgrove as Carly, and it premiered on Nickelodeon in September 2007.

Carly lives in Seattle, Washington with her 26-year-old brother (and legal guardian) Spencer and produces the show in a makeshift third-floor studio loft in their apartment. Their mother has never been seen or mentioned in the show, but their father is a U.S. Air Force officer ("Col. Steven Shay") who is temporarily stationed on a submarine, and is often mentioned but had never been seen in person.

The show is very popular with the teen/tween set and is shown in many countries around the world, including the U.K. and Canada. As is usual these days, the sitcom has generated many iCarly franchises, including a website, icarly.com, which [features] many promotional videos by the cast (as their respective characters), as well as content created and sent in by viewers. Other features on the site include characters' blogs, pictures from the set, songs, games, and comments from viewers.

There are also iCarly-inspired video games, including an animated PC hidden object game, iCarly: iDream in Toons, and a game for Nintendo DS and Wii. A sequel, iCarly 2: iJoin the Click, was released on November 16, 2010 for the same platforms.

And of course there is an iCarly Facebook page, which announced in 2010 an application for the iPhone and iPod Touch [...] called “Sam’s Remote” which is essentially a compilation of buttons and corresponding silly sound effects.
