"Rugrats" And Other Classic Nickelodeon Shows Could Make A Comeback

With popular '90s Nickelodeon shows Legends of the Hidden Temple, Hey Arnold!, and Rocko's Modern Life returning to the small screen as TV movies, and Double Dare coming back for a anniversary special, could this mean that Rugrats is also making a comeback?

It's possible, according to Nickelodeon's Senior Vice President of Original Movies! During the Hidden Temple panel at New York Comic Con 2016, Michael Sammaciccia (who also serves as an Executive Producer on the TV movie) said Rugrats was one of many fan-favorite franchises being considered for a revival.

"What's happening with [Legends of the Hidden Temple] is that it's allowing Nickelodeon to look at the rich library they have, and not just Rugrats," Sammaciccia said, in response to a fan question. "All of them are being considered."

If a Rugrats revival - or TV movie - were to happen, the original creators Paul Germain, Arlene Klasky, and Gabor Csupo might be on board to return, though they have differing opinions on what a revival could look like. In an interview earlier this year, Germain said one idea would be to keep the show in the '90s.

"I think that’d be cool. Cell phones can be interesting, but technology has a funny way of making it very difficult to write around because people are always in constant communication with each other in a way that works against drama," he said. "It takes a really fun writers' obstacle away and makes it too easy."

New York Comic Con continues through Sunday 9th October 2016.
