‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Gives A 'SpongeBob SquarePants' Star A Shout Out

SPOILER WARNING: The following article references the specifics regarding a shout out in Avengers: Infinity War. Read at your own risk.

Avengers: Infinity War gives a surprising shout out to a certain underwater Nickelodeon star during the movie!

When Ebony Maw (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) arrives on Earth as he attempts to retrieve the Time Stone from Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) insults Maw, comparing his likeness to a certain grumpy Octopus from Nickelodeon's hit animated series, SpongeBob SquarePants!:

“It means get lost, Squidward!”

This surprising reference to Squidward, Tentacles SpongeBob's perpetuity cranky next door neighbour and Krusty Krab co-worker has been a prominent part of much of the inside jokes within the recent trend in which Marvel fans took to Twitter to share spoilers for the film without proper context.

The Squidward reference is doubly surprising as Avengers: Infinity War is part of the Marvel cinematic universe, which is owned by Disney, a rival company to Nickelodeon!

Although its a long-stretch, it could also be a dig at Benedict Cumberbatch, as Vincent Waller, the Creative Director on SpongeBob SquarePants, revealed that Benedict shares Squidward's grumpy trait, turning down the chance to guest star on the beloved Nicktoon, following in the footsteps of stars such as David Bowie, Betty White, Aubrey Plaza, Henry Winkler, David Lander, Michael McKean, Bob Barker, Jon Hamm, Amy Poehler, Mark Hamill, Alton Brown, Johnny Depp, Dennis Quaid, Ricky Gervais, Rosario Dawson, LeBron James, Tina Fey, Craig Ferguson, Will Ferrell, P!nk, Victoria Beckham, Kristin Wiig, Ginnifer Goodwin, John Goodman, Andy Samberg, Johnny Knoxville, among many others:

Benedict's lost!

Avengers: Infinity War is now playing.
