Paramount (formally ViacomCBS), the parent company of the Nickelodeon brand, has applied to register the trademark for SpongeBob SquarePants non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Paramount has applied to register SpongeBob NFTs under NICE Classes 09 - Scientific and electric apparatus and instruments, which is for Goods & Services pertaining to "downloadable multimedia files containing artwork relating to the field of entertainment authenticated by; Downloadable virtual goods, namely, crypto-collectibles and non-fungible tokens (NFTs)".
The news follows Paramount announcing a strategic partnership with leading non-fungible token (NFT) company RECUR last year to create a fan-focused platform that will bring the company’s iconic IP and cherished franchises that transcend generations to the space. Through this agreement, ViacomCBS and RECUR will create a unified environment where fans can buy, collect and trade NFTs as digital products and collectables across ViacomCBS' leading portfolio of consumer brands, including Nickelodeon, BET, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Paramount Pictures and Showtime Networks Inc.
The news also follows Funko releasing Nickelodeon NFTs earlier this month, which sold out within hours. However, SpongeBob was missing from the first wave.
