Samuel L. Jackson has joined the cast of the upcoming animated Garfield movie!

Jackson will lend his voice to Garfield's father, Vic, a brand new character in the Garfield universe, as we've never seen Garfield's father appear in the comic strip or in previous movies.

Jackson will join Chris Pratt, who is voicing the iconic Monday-hating, lasagna-loving cat.

Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson’s Alcon Entertainment is behind the new still-untitled Garfield, which has been picked up for worldwide (excluding China) release by Sony Pictures. The script written by Oscar nominee David Reynolds (Finding Nemo) is being directed by Mark Dindal (Chicken Little), with the duo having previously worked together on The Emperor’s New Groove. Plot details are still to be announced.

Created by Jim Davis, Garfield debuted as a comic character first in 1978, with the lazy tabby cat often appearing alongside Jon Arbuckle, his human owner, and the lovable household dog Odie. Originally appearing in 41 newspapers, Garfield currently holds the record for being the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world.

Mark Dindal (Chicken Little) is directing the feature using a screenplay by David Reynolds (Finding Nemo). The film is based on the original comic strip by Jim Davis which has previously inspired several animated shows and feature films. John Cohen (Despicable Me) is producing with Steven P. Wegner, Alcon co-founders Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, Dneg CEO Namit Malhotra, DNEG President Tom Jacomb. Davis is executive producing with Amuse's Bridget McMeel and Craig Sost.

Garfield previously appeared on the big screen in live-action/animated hybrid Garfield in 2004 and its sequel, 2006’s Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties. In these movies, both produced by 20th Century Fox, Bill Murray (Ghostbusters) voiced the titular cat. Ironically, Lorenzo Music, the late voice actor who voiced Garfield in Garfield and Friends, also voiced the animated version of Murray's Ghostbusters character Dr. Peter Venkman in The Real Ghostbusters.

Samuel L. Jackson has appeared in over 100 films, including Die Hard: With a Vengeance (1995), Unbreakable (2000), Shaft (2000), The 51st State (2001), Black Snake Moan (2006), Snakes on a Plane (2006), and the Star Wars prequel trilogy (1999-2005), as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
