'SNL' Star Mikey Day Reportedly Writing New 'The Rugrats Movie' for Nickelodeon and Paramount

In 2021, Tommy, Chuckie, Angelica, Susie, and Phil and Lil made a big comeback when Paramount+ debuted Nickelodeon's brand new CG-animated Rugrats series, based on the network's iconic '90s animated series of the same name. Already renewed for a third season, it looks like Nickelodeon and Paramount have even bigger plans for the beloved series.

The Daily News is reporting that a brand new The Rugrats Movie is in the works at Nickelodeon and Paramount, which is being written by Saturday Night Live cast member Mikey Day and SNL writer Streeter Seidell. The news is backed up by a bio of Day on The Harry Walker Agency website.

Details about the project are slim at the moment, including whether the film will be for theaters or for streaming services, such as Paramount+, and whether it'll be CG-animated or feature 2D animation.

When the Rugrats reboot was originally announced in 2018, a live-action/CG-animated hybrid Rugrats from Paramount Players was also announced, with David Bowers, who directed three of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies, tapped to direct the project.

If confirmed, this will be fourth Rugrats movie, following The Rugrats Movie in 1998, Rugrats in Paris in 2000, and the Rugrats/The Wild Thornberrys crossover movie Rugrats Go Wild in 2003. The property has always proved popular with moviegoers, with the original trio of movies grossing nearly $300 million in total at the box office.

Mikey Day joined Saturday Night Live as a writer for the 2013-14 season before becoming a cast member on the hit sketch comedy series. During his first season as a cast member, Day gained recognition for his wildly popular “Haunted Elevator (ft. David S. Pumpkins)” sketch with Tom Hanks as well as his Donald Trump Jr. impression. Day is the host of Netflix’s hit baking contest series Is It Cake?, which will return for a second season.

In addition to The Rugrats Movie, Day and Seidell are also currently writing the reboots of Inspector Gadget and Space Camp for Disney.

Mikey Day isn't the only SNL star with a Nickelodeon Movie in the pipeline: Paramount is also reportedly working on a live-action reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, with Weekend Update's Colin Jost and his brother Casey (Impractical Jokers) writing the script for the live-action film and Michael Bay returning as producer from the 2014 and 2016 films.
