'The Art of El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera' Book Announced

Jorge R. Gutierrez, the co-creator of Nickelodeon’s Emmy-winning show El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, has revealed that he's currently working on a brand new art book based on the beloved show!

Titled The Art of El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, the hardcover book is set to be released by Abrams Books on July 9, 2024, with an SRP of $40.00. The title is available to pre-order today, including at Amazon.com.

The Art of El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera takes fans behind the scenes of the hit Nickelodeon animated series. Presented bilingually in both English and Spanish, the book celebrates the series’ Mexican roots and explores how the creators drew from their own lives in Mexico and the United States to inspire their sprawling superhero metropolis.

Created by Jorge R. Gutierrez and Sandra Equihua, El Tigre follows the adventures of thirteen-year-old Mexican superhero Manny Rivera who fights evil as masked warrior El Tigre. Featuring sketches and early designs of many characters and locations, including Miracle City, Manny Rivera, Frida Suarez, supervillain White Pantera, Puma Loco, and Plata Peligrosa.

Accompanied by interviews with Gutierrez, Equihua, and key animators and concept artists, The Art of El Tigre is the definitive archive of the award-winning cult classic cartoon.

El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera premiered on Nickelodeon on March 3, 2007 and ran for 26 episodes until September 13, 2008, winning two Emmy Awards along the way. Although the series only ran for one season, the show and its characters have remained in the hearts of many fans, with El Tigre also recently making a big comeback as a playable fighter in the recently released Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2!

Chris McDonnell has served as author and designer for Adventure Time: The Art of Ooo; Steven Universe: Art & Origins; BoJack Horseman: The Art Before the Horse; The Art of Invader Zim; and Steven Universe: End of an Era. McDonnell also designed books on Ralph Bakshi, Bill Plympton, Wonder Woman, and more. He lives in Philadelphia.

Jorge R. Gutierrez, born in Mexico City and raised in Tijuana, Mexico, is an animator, voice actor, painter, writer, and director who has completed various films, cartoons, illustrations, and paintings exploring his love affair with Mexican pop and folk culture. Along with his wife and muse, Sandra Equihua, he created the multiple Annie and Emmy Award–winning animated television series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera for Nickelodeon. Gutierrez cowrote and directed the animated film The Book of Life and created, cowrote, and directed the limited series Maya and the Three.
 
Sandra Equihua, born and raised in Tijuana, Mexico, is an illustrator, voice actor, producer, and character designer, who melds the influences of midcentury design and her Mexican heritage. She has designed characters for El Macho, ¡Mucha Lucha!, The Buzz on Maggie, Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!, and Maya and the Three, and created the award-winning Nickelodeon series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera with her husband, Jorge R. Gutierrez, for which she was the first Latina artist to win an Annie and Emmy Award for her character designs. She also won an Annie for her character designs for The Book of Life.
