'El Tigre' Creator Reveals He's In Talks to Revive Iconic Nickelodeon Series - And It May Include Characters From 'Invader ZIM' and 'Teenage Robot'

Could El Tigre be about to roar back onto our screens once more?

El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera was one of the major standout animated series releases with Nickelodeon back in the 2000s, and the creator behind it all has revealed that we may be seeing Manny and his family once again!

About El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera:

Co-created by husband-and-wife team Jorge R. Gutierrez (The Book of Life) and Sandra Equihua (Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!) and based on Jorge's experiences growing up in Mexico City, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, described as a folk art-inspired animated comedy with a spaghetti western twist follows 13-year-old Manny (voiced by Alanna Ubach, Welcome to the Wayne) who must choose whether to use his superpowers as El Tigre for good or evil.

Manny is a well-meaning kid who lives with his father and grandfather in Miracle City, an urban melting pot full of colorful heroes and nefarious villains. A spin of his mystical belt buckle transforms him into the brave and powerful masked warrior, El Tigre. As El Tigre, he has to choose whether to become a great superhero, like his father, Rodolpho and his alter ego White Pantera (voiced by Eric Bauza, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesThe Loud HouseThe Casagrandes) or a feared super-villain like his grandfather, Granpapi and his alter ego Puma Loco (voiced by Carlos Alazraqui, Rocko's Modern Life). Manny struggles with the daily choice of which super-power he will master because being good is good... but being bad is fun.

El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera premiered on Nickelodeon on March 3, 2007 and ran for 26 episodes until September 13, 2008, winning two Emmy Awards along the way. The storylines draw from the popular Latino telenovelas with exaggerated comedic situations and outrageous recurring characters.

Renewed Interest in El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera:

Although it's been nearly 20 years since the show was on-air with new episodes, El Tigre has never been far from fans hearts and minds. In 2023, Manny Rivera became a playable character in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, and just last year, the series received an official "The Art Of..." book detailing the gorgeous art featured in the show. Accompanied by interviews with Gutierrez, Equihua, and key animators and concept artists, The Art of El Tigre is the definitive archive of the award-winning cult classic cartoon.

Will El Tigre Ever Come Back?

During a recent panel at MomoCon, an anime convention based in Atlanta, Georgia, Jorge revealed that not only is he working to bring El Tigre back to our screens, but he is in active discussions with Paramount to do just that. Gutierrez even discussed the revival’s plot, which might be far darker than many fans might think.

During this weekend’s MomoCon, Gutierrez noted that while he is currently working on several projects, including new television series for Disney, a new movie for Netflix, and a Warner Bros Speedy Gonzalez movie, he is still thinking of his Nickelodeon series. As Jorge describes it, the El Tigre revival will “see a twenty-year-old version of Manny Rivera return to the present, meeting the other characters he once knew. Future Manny tells Frida that she must eliminate El Tigre’s father and grandfather, or the world will be destroyed.” While this revival is far from confirmed, the fact that Gutierrez is in active discussions to make this a reality is good news for El Tigre.

In a shocking twist, Gutierrez also confirmed that he is looking to add the lead characters from Invader Zim and My Life as a Teenage Robot (Invader ZIM and Jenny "XJ-9" Wakeman, respectively) into the mix. Both these Nickelodeon properties are wildly different from the story of the young mask-wearing protagonist, though Jorge went one step further in confirming how serious he was about the crossover. “I’m friends with Jhonen Vasquez and Rob Renzetti, creators of Zim and Teenage Robot, so I’ve already got their blessing on using them both.” While Paramount hasn’t given the project a green light, it seems as though the stars are aligning.

Gutierrez also talked about how, throughout the series, Manny was constantly struggling between being good and evil, never quite landing on a side when it came to joining either his father or his grandfather.

El Tigre In 'Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2'
Paramount

Ironically enough, a wild series of events took place in recent years to get the ball rolling on an El Tigre revival. Specifically, Gutierrez himself confirmed at Momocon that the discussions were thanks to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, the video game that included his masked protagonist. Hilariously enough, El Tigre wasn’t supposed to be a part of the game’s cast, but once Jorge saw an image of his character fighting an opponent, he shared the image, believing it was real. When Nickelodeon saw the popular demand for Jorge’s character, the game producers decided to place him into the game, creating some serious groundswell for the character that hadn’t been seen in years.

If you haven’t had the chance to check out El Tigre, it’s currently available to stream on Paramount+ in its entirety. The series stars its titular protagonist as he discovers that while his father is a superhero, his grandfather is one of the world’s greatest supervillains at the same time. Stuck between good and evil, Manny has to choose which of his mentors he will follow. Fans can start streaming today at ParamountPlus.com.

Will El Tigre Ever Come Back?

Speaking with Cartoon Base in 2024, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera creator Jorge R. Gutierrez said that not only was he interested in coming back for a revival but actually almost did a movie when he initially started working with Netflix before it fell through, "I would absolutely LOVE to do this. When I first came to Netflix we almost did a movie but the deal didn't work out at the time. I have a big idea for a feature and then a new series. Hopefully I get to do this one day."

Jump forward to July 2025, and it seems like an El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera revival could be on its way! Speaking to Cartoon Base, Gutierrez revealed that he's currently in talks with Nickelodeon to bring El Tigre back, saying: “Something unexpected. And yes… something that could absolutely lead to a movie [...] El Tigre has a habit of showing up when you least expect him. And when he does… he’s gonna roar. THIS I SWEAR!”

El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera wrapped up its run several years ago, but it seems like the creator still has plenty of ideas of where to take Manny's adventures next. It was a series that had a lot of firsts, so a revival would be a welcome one for sure.

Jorge R. Gutierrez Shares Development Art Once-Planned 'El Tigre' Movie

El Tigre creator Jorge R. Gutierrez reveals his interest in a potential revival series or movie!

El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera
Credit: Nickelodeon.

El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera was one of the major standout animated series releases with Nickelodeon back in the 2000s, and the creator behind it all revealed he would love to come back with a new revival project some day! El Tigre has been in the midst of a small comeback as the Nickelodeon animated series not only has finally been made available to stream with Paramount+ (which means that fans will be able to check out the series for the first time, if they never have seen it before), but its star character also made his fighting game debut, and the series is now the subject of a all-new art book.

With El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera's titular Manny Rivera now a playable character in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, and the series now streaming, with a new book coming out later this year, it seems like it's the perfect time for the franchise to come back as a whole. Series creator Jorge R. Gutierrez was recently asked about this and revealed that he would "absolutely love" to come back for a revival project with ideas for both a potential feature film and new series.

Will El Tigre Ever Come Back?

Speaking with The Cartoon Base, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera creator Jorge R. Gutierrez said that not only was he interested in coming back for a revival but actually almost did a movie when he initially started working with Netflix before it fell through, "I would absolutely LOVE to do this. El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera wrapped up its run several years ago, but it seems like the creator still has plenty of ideas of where to take Manny's adventures next. Set in the Mexican culture inspired Miracle City, the titular El Tigre is the name of the young hero, Manny Rivera, who fights crime. His father, the famous superhero White Pantera, and his grandfather, the famous villain Puma Loco, are both trying to influence the young Manny to use his powers for either good or evil. Together with his best friend Frida Suarez, Manny then takes on all sorts of powerful foes as he battles with his own ideals.

Jorge recently revealed some spectacular early visual development art for the El Tigre movie pitch on his official X/Twitter page! The art features features Manny Rivera as El Tigre and his best friend, Frida Suarez.

Jorge added in a follow up post: "the Tigre movie almost happened when I was exclusive to Netflix back in 2018. At the time Nickelodeon was all for it but Netflix Animation wanted me to focus on the Maya limited series and Space Punch (which was 2 movies at the time)".

It was a series that had a lot of firsts, so a revival would be a welcome one for sure. Do you want to see El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera return with a new series someday? Let me know all of your thoughts about it on X/Twitter, Bluesky and Threads!

New 'Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2' Leak Hints That 'El Tigre' Will Be a Playable Character

Has the cat been let out the bag?

Cast of El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera

An alleged Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 leak showing El Tigre as one of the newcomers in the long-rumoured sequel has promoted a response from both the show's creator and one of the lead developers of the first game, all but confirming the sequel's existence.

Released in October 2021, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is a platform fighter game featuring well-loved characters, such as SpongeBob SquarePants, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Garfield. Many players have been requesting other characters, such as Squidward and Jimmy Neutron, to be included in future DLCs, but the game has not been updated for a few months.

Well, good news - there's even more evidence that a sequel is on the way. Earlier this year, leaked screenshots showed a new move for Patrick, a new model for Danny Phantom that seems to use 2D facial expressions, and suggested that Squidward would be joining the roster. Then, last month, a leaked image claimed to show the game's box art, which also confirmed that Vlad Plasmius, Jimmy Neutron, and TMNT's Raphael would become playable.

All of that was reasonable evidence for a sequel, but the latest leak has all but confirmed it. Over on the Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl subreddit, Redditor Own_Philosopher_2008 shared an image showing El Tigre fighting Garfield in what appears to be a test map, along with the caption, "The cats in the roof at 3 AM".

Not only does El Tigre's model look legitimate, but it also lines up with the previous leaks we've had of Danny, Squidward, and Patrick, as they all took place on the same map. If that wasn't enough for you to start considering that Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 is happening, then the responses from El Tigre's creator and a key developer on the first game might do it.

After the leak was posted on Reddit, El Tigre's creator Jorge R. Gutierrez shared an image of the leak on his Twitter, saying "Guess who’s back?". Gutierrez later clarified that "*i don’t work for Nickelodeon so I have nothing to do with this video game but I’m thrilled to see El Tigre back !!!," but confirming that Alanna Ubach would be returning to voice the titular hero.

Gutierrez also posted on his official Instagram saying, "Here comes a new challenger!". Gutierrez also shared the same leak on Twitter saying, "Guess who's back!". This isn't the first time that Gutierrez has mentioned it either, as he suggested that several El Tigre characters would be joining a "certain fighting Nick game" in an Instagram Q&A last week.

To make things even more concrete, Thaddeus Crews, one of the lead developers involved with the first Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, shared the "this is fine" meme on Twitter after the leak. In a later tweet, he said, "Nevermind this is awesome I get to f+ck with people again", seemingly confirming the sequel once and for all. We'll just have to wait for the official announcement now, which doesn't seem that far off now that we all know about the game.

As El Tigre, he has to choose whether to become a great superhero, like his father, Rodolpho and his alter ego White Pantera (voiced by Eric Bauza, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Loud House, The Casagrandes) or a feared super-villain like his grandfather, Granpapi and his alter ego Puma Loco (voiced by Carlos Alazraqui, Rocko's Modern Life).

Season one of El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera is set to drop onto Paramount+ on July 26.

At Nickelodeon, Naito oversees animation content across all formats and platforms– spanning linear, digital, TV movies, theatrical motion pictures and SVOD. Since joining the network in 2018, Naito has since overseen a renaissance at the studio of animation content and production in scale and creativity.

She has been a driving force at Nickelodeon bringing new projects, top talent and key partnerships to Nickelodeon Animation, to further bolster its content pipeline across preschool, kids, theatrical and its studio business. Notable projects include: the highly anticipated Star Trek: Prodigy from Nickelodeon and CBS Studios’ Eye on Animation; best-selling book adaptations Real Pigeons Fight Crime, produced by James Corden and Ben Winston, and the critically acclaimed Big Nate; Tiny Chef in partnership with Imagine Kids+Family; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem theatrical motion picture in partnership with Point Grey Pictures’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver, helmed by Jeff Rowe, and PAW Patrol: The Movie; the first-ever SpongeBob SquarePants spinoff Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years; and the animated series based on Monster High, the iconic franchise in partnership with Mattel.

To continue growing Nickelodeon’s animation business beyond linear, in 2019, Naito oversaw the network’s multi-year output deal with Netflix to produce original animated feature films and television series, based both on the Nickelodeon library of characters as well as all-new IP for kids and families globally. This deal marked an expansion of the existing relationship between the companies, which has already brought several popular titles to Netflix, including animated specials Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling and Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus, and movies based on The Loud House and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Building an inclusive and diverse culture at the animation studio and developing emerging and homegrown talent has been a strong point in Naito’s mission throughout her time at Nickelodeon. Naito has brought in more than 700 new employees across dozens of animation productions, and since employees began working remotely in March in 2020, over 200 new positions have been filled with studio productions operating virtually at 100%. Nickelodeon currently has over 50 animated shows in production across series, its studio business and movies, and doubled its production slate by end of 2020. Under Naito’s leadership, Nickelodeon also held its first-ever virtual job fair this year, garnering nearly 6000 attendees globally, exemplifying a commitment to hire inclusively and to reflect authenticity and diversity in storytelling.

Naito produced DreamWorks Animation’s Oscar®-nominated feature, The Boss Baby, while also earning her a PGA nomination for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures. Prior to DreamWorks Animation, Ramsey worked as a producer for Blue Sky Studios, at Cartoon Network as Head of Movies and at Nickelodeon Movies as Vice President of Development & Production.
