Nickelodeon and Paramount+ to Bring Dora's 'Magic Mermaid Adventures' Into theaters in September 2025
A package of episodes tapping into fan love for Dora and mermaids will screen at more than 3,000 theaters in 17 countries next month.
Nickelodeon and Paramount+ are rolling out a themed package of Dora episodes internationally to freshen up the 25-year-old franchise with a mermaid throughline, Kidscreen is reporting.
DORA: Magic Mermaid Adventures is a one-hour collection of four brand-new episodes in which Dora and her monkey pal Boots turn into mermaids to make new underwater friends, plus a birthday-themed one that sees the exploring duo go on a mission to find Dora’s lost birthday cake. It will premiere in more than 3,000 theaters in 17 countries, starting on Thursday, September 18.
Paramount Pictures will distribute DORA: Magic Mermaid Adventures in markets including the US, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Australia/New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil and Chile. And Paramount is supporting the theatrical release with related audio and YouTube content. A new podcast called Dora’s Mermaid Adventures (10 episodes) will drop on all major audio entertainment platforms on Monday, September 15. And Nickelodeon is also animating six of the podcast’s episodes for a YouTube release on Wednesday, September 17 (the Dora & Friends YouTube channel has 2.6 million subscribers).
Dora the Explorer has tried on many alter egos over the years, including ice skater and fairy tale princess. But it’s the mermaid-themed episodes of the series that have always been “among the most popular in the franchise’s 25-year history,” Paramount told Kidscreen. In fact, an ep in which Dora becomes a mermaid is currently the second most popular video on the Dora & Friends YouTube channel, with 56 million views.
Releasing new Dora content to cinemas rounds out the brand’s franchise footprint, according to Paramount. The 25-year-old IP already has content on streaming, linear TV and YouTube—plus podcasts, music and location-based experiences. So a theatrical release is a logical next step. Releasing the content now is also a good way to hype up the brand’s 25th anniversary this year, and in the US it aligns with the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, Paramount points out.
The Great Dora Fiesta continues at Nickelodeon Universe at American Dream in New Jersey, with meet and greets with Dora and Boots, along with special activities and screenings of DORA throughout September.
Dora the Explorer premiered on Nickelodeon in 2000, and it has spawned two spinoff series and a 2024 reboot show since. The brand also boasts two feature-length films, including Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado, which was released simultaneously on Nickelodeon and Paramount+ on July 2. Before that, Dora and the Lost City of Gold rolled out theatrically in 2019 and grossed US$120.6 million worldwide against a US$49-million budget.

Nickelodeon Releases 'Dora the Explorer' Pilot Intro to Celebrate Beloved Preschool Property's 25th Anniversary
Today (Aug. 14) marks the 25th anniversary of the debut of Nickelodeon's beloved preschool property, Dora the Explorer, and to celebrate, Nickelodeon's official Dora Instagram page has released the intro and theme song to the unaired pilot episode of Dora the Explorer!
Although the pilot episode of Dora the Explorer features many of the same designs and aspects that would eventually go on and feature in the show, there are a few notable differences, including Boots, who has a completely different design: he doesn't wear his iconic red boots and has a mostly yellow fur, instead of the mainly grey body he has in the series. The theme song and intro, although similar, have a few minor differences, too. The pilot also features fan favorite characters such as Backpack, Map, and of course, Swiper!

Plan International and Paramount Launch Dora-Inspired 'Worthy' Campaign to Support Girls' Education Worldwide
Plan International and Paramount launch "Worthy" campaign to support girls' education worldwide
New PSA invites supporters to give back by giving backpacks to girls around the world
WASHINGTON, July 28, 2025 -- Plan International and Paramount, in partnership with Nickelodeon, today launched the next chapter of their global campaign featuring beloved explorer Dora, to raise awareness about the importance of education. At the heart of this year's movement is a joyful new public service announcement, 'Worthy,' set to the empowering anthem by Mavis Staples, celebrating the courage and promise of girls everywhere.
For generations, Dora has inspired young explorers to dream big. Now, her iconic purple backpack is helping girls around the world unlock futures filled with possibility. In the new PSA, girls from across the globe are seen dancing, singing and walking to school — their purple backpacks serving as both a tool and a symbol of confidence, dignity and hope.
"It's not just about what's inside the backpack, but what's inside the girl. Her power, her voice, her potential." - Shanna Marzilli, president and CEO of Plan International USA.
The 'Worthy' PSA will air across Paramount's Nickelodeon and MTV networks in more than 170 markets worldwide, as well as on social media channels.
Watch the "Worthy" PSA and experience the campaign's message at
This year's campaign is a reflection of Plan's growing partnership with Paramount, which launched on International Day of the Girl last year. Since then, we have delivered backpacks filled with essential school supplies to girls in five countries, helping them show up prepared, proud and ready to learn. For many, this simple gift has made the difference between dropping out and stepping forward into a future full of promise.
Give a girl a backpack — make your $25 gift at www.planusa.org/backpacks.
This year's campaign also powers The Dora Fund, a new initiative that invests in grassroots and youth-led organizations advancing girls' education. By providing direct grants and resources, the fund helps community leaders address barriers to learning and unlock opportunities for girls worldwide.
"It's not just about what's inside the backpack. It's about what's inside the girl — her power, her voice, her potential," said Shanna Marzilli, president and CEO of Plan International USA. "Together with Paramount and Nickelodeon, we're reminding every girl that she is worthy and making sure she has what she needs to lead — not just in school but in life."
A gift of just $25 provides a backpack for a girl in need — and that's just the beginning. When you give, you're not only helping her carry books but also helping her carry her future.
Join the movement:
- Visit www.planusa.org/backpacks to watch the 'Worthy' PSA and give a backpack.
- Share the campaign on your social channels using #EveryChildIsWorthy and help spread the message that every girl deserves an education.
- Follow Plan on Instagram, X, Facebook and LinkedIn to see your impact in action and share your story.
Because every girl is worthy. And together, we rise.
