'As Told By Ginger', 'KaBlam!', 'Action League Now!', 'Nick Arcade' and More Removed From Paramount+

Paramount+ has suddenly removed As Told By Ginger from its programming library.

Fans recently took notice that the Nickelodeon animated series had disappeared from the streaming service, leaving many worried about the availability of the beloved Nicktoon. Unfortunately, the loss of this animated classic from Paramount’s platform means that it cannot be legally viewed anywhere at the moment, as it currently isn’t available on any digital storefront. While there have been instances in the past of removed series playing leapfrog from one streaming service to another, an official comment has yet to be released by Paramount, meaning nothing has been confirmed when it comes to As Told By Ginger.

Rather than focusing on adventures taking place under the sea like SpongeBob SquarePants or attempting to take over the world like Invader Zim, Ginger’s animated series took a page from shows like Doug, creating an interesting yet mundane setting for its titular character. First premiering in the year 2000, the series would garner three seasons and became a cult classic for many Nickelodeon fans over the years. While a sequel series and/or spin-off was never announced, it still remains one of the more popular NickToons thanks to its storytelling, and it seems that the only way to legally revisit the show at this point is via physical media.

Nickelodeon describes As Told By Ginger as such, “Middle schooler Ginger Foutley thinks she’s a geek – but doesn’t want to be. She and her best pals, Dodie, Macie and Darren, aspire to shake the “geek” label and get in with the cool crowd. Will they succeed? As Told By Ginger offers the rare opportunity to get a definitive answer: unlike most animated shows, the characters aren’t stuck at one age – they actually get older as the show progresses — and the whole series is one continuing story.” Following the loss of this series on Paramount+, the question arises what other Nicktoons might be getting the axe.

As of the writing of this article, the streaming service still has Nickelodeon classics like SpongeBob SquarePants, Rocko’s Modern Life, Rugrats, Hey Arnold!, The Wild Thornberrys, and Rocket Power, to name a few. Fingers crossed that other animated fare from the cable network remains on Paramount+, but these days, it feels like nothing is safe when it comes to streaming.

The move echoes Paramount+ around the same time last year, when the platform removed a raft of Nickelodeon programing, including Doug. In a statement, a Paramount spokesperson said that the title purges are part of the company’s normal process of removing and adding titles, which is done on a monthly and quarterly basis.

Update (1/6/26): Unfortunately, two more classic Nickelodeon series were removed from Paramount+ during the winter holidays: KaBlam! and it's spin-off, Action League Now!.

Animation Writer and Story Editor Anne D. Bernstein Passes Away

A pioneer for women in animation, the trailblazing funny lady began her career in the ‘90s, becoming one of very first women in the writer’s room; she worked on numerous series as a script writer including Daria, was senior editor of Nickelodeon Magazine, and her illustrations were seen in Redbook and The New York Times.

Comedy/animation writer and story editor Anne D. Bernstein passed away on February 8, 2022 after a long illness. Best known for her work on the Daria series, she was, according to Baboon Animation’s Mike de Seve, “… a true pioneer for women in animation writing.”

According to Bernstein’s LinkedIn page, she had a wide reaching and varied career including head writer for MTV Animation Development. She was a script writer for KaBlam!, Angelo Rules, Daria, MTV Downtown, Hey Monie, Backyardigans, Viva Pinata, Tutenstein, and Johnny and The Sprites. Additionally, she was a senior editor and comic book editor for Nickelodeon Magazine, and a contributing writer for several publications including SPY, National Lampoon, and Paper. Bernstein also blogged for Channel Frederator and Roadside America, and her Illustrations were seen in Redbook, The New York Times, Good Housekeeping, and others. Bernstein was also the author of The Daria Diaries.

Mike de Seve, a close friend, and admirer of Bernstein, shared a tribute with Animation World Network:

"The hilarious animation writer Anne D. Bernstein died last week from the not-hilarious Parkinson’s disease. As one of the very few, very first female writers in animation, she was a trailblazer, and a friend to many of us.

I knew Anne since our days together at MTV Animation and had the great pleasure to have her on my script teams for several series, first at 4Kids and later at Baboon Animation. Anne’s work on the groundbreaking MTV series Daria is probably her most beloved.

In a career beginning in the ‘90s, Anne said that she had never been in a writers’ room where she wasn’t the only woman. But bravely into that room she went, again and again and, in doing so, Anne truly helped change the rules of entry.

As a comedy writer, Anne always brought her A game, digging up humor in places the rest of us weren’t even bothering to look. In one script, she named a retirement home for actors “Sitting Ovations.”

Every day I worked with her, Anne turned that old, ignorant industry belief on its head, that women weren’t funny, by being as funny as anyone else in the room — and so much more professional it made us crazy.

Sadly, her illness hospitalized her before she could ever be part of an actual 50-50 writers’ room, or a room that represents all the voices in our culture. But for those of you who are walking in the door now, you should know that she was one of the very first to open it. And her dedication to quality and craft kept it open for the next folks.

Anne, if you’re out there and you’re wondering what the hell your life meant — writing a bunch of jokes on a bunch of cartoons, then getting taken out way too early — know that you have made a great difference for many to follow, and we’re all better for it.

May Anne’s legacy inspire women writers — all writers — to tune out the ignorance around you and instead try a little harder, go that extra mile to make your work great. And even when the room is stacked against you, don’t be afraid to slay."

Friend and colleague Michael Mennies shared also shared a tribute with AWN:

"I got a letter today from Kevin Strader, who worked together with Anne, myself and Mike de Seve in a writer’s room and he said, 'What a character. What a person. Whenever she was in the room, her qualities made me feel like a poser. But, happily so.'

I couldn’t agree more. At the risk of insulting the other fantastic writers I have had the good fortune of working with, Anne was simply the best, both as a member of a story room where her carefully chosen suggestions always contributed to a better story, and as a writer working on her own. She had a fountain of original ideas for episodes, professional to a point she made the rest of us look like slackers, a writer who could explain her reasoning and keep working through trouble spots until she figured them out, and a someone who was just laugh out loud funny to read. Her writing always had her unique comical voice in it, yet that voice did not go for laughs that went against the integrity of the characters or the show’s tone. 

I was introduced to Anne by Mike DeSeve in 2011. Mike and I were story editing a show called Kikoriki together, and he thought Anne would be a good addition to the team. Anne was not the chattiest in the room, but it was always clear she was paying attention, because when she contributed to a story her ideas moved things in the right direction.

From 2017-2019 I worked with Anne on Kit^n^Kate. The show is pre-school, which was certainly not Anne’s natural place for comedy. But she was just fantastic. She was able to write stories little kids could understand and enjoy that also played at a second level for the parents. Like her story 'The Missing Stink,' about a skunk who had been faking his foul stench his whole life by taping smelly cheese under his armpits. Determined to lead an authentic life, he goes out in search of his inner stink. And, oh yeah, it had a musical number modeled after 'My Shot' from Hamilton. That episode still cracks me up."

The Unmade 'Prometheus and Bob' Live-Action Movie Explained | NickRewind

Prometheus And Bob was an animated short featured on Nickelodeon's animated sketch-comedy series KaBlam!, but here's why a live-action movie version didn't happen.

Here's why a planned live-action version of the Prometheus And Bob segment from KaBlam! didn't happen. The 1990s was something of a golden period for cartoon shows on Nickelodeon, which includes the likes of Hey Arnold! and Rugrats. They produced some cult favorites like Rocko's Modern Life and KaBlam! too, which were unique even among Nickelodeon's madcap line-up. The latter show was created by Robert Mittenthal, Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi (McRobb and Viscardi also worked on The Adventures of Pete & Pete and Snow Day), and the format saw animated hosts Henry and June introducing sketches done in different styles, including claymation.

Some of the regular segments on KaBlam! included ferret roommates Sniz & Fondue and the Action League Now!, which used action figures and "CHUCKIMATION" to depict the adventures of a bunch of not-very superheroes. One of the best recurring segments was Prometheus And Bob, which saw the government looking through tapes where a purple alien named Prometheus is trying to teach a dimwitted caveman named Bob how to do things like cook or paint. Prometheus recorded his experiments, which typically end in chaos.

Prometheus And Bob is a slapstick delight and is made all the more impressive by its stop-motion animation. The sketches were created by Cote Zellers, and in 2019 he spoke to the Cult Popture channel about the abandoned plans to make a live-action movie version of the sketch. Zellers revealed the project was set up at Paramount, with Clueless director Amy Heckerling set to helm.

The Prometheus And Bob movie was also set to reunite Tommy Boy and Black Sheep co-stars David Spade (Rules of Engagement, Just Shoot Me) and Chris Farley (SNL). While Zellers didn't specify which characters the actors would play, it feels almost certain Spade would have played Prometheus and Farley would play Bob, with the former being constantly flabbergasted by the latter's wacky antics. Farley's tragic passing in 1997 appears to have essentially doomed the project, though Zellers reveals the movie was still developed for some time afterward, which includes a screenplay he was very unhappy with.

Zellers revealed that many of the concepts from that unmade Nickelodeon Prometheus and Bob script went in the 2010 Jack Black comedy Gulliver's Travels. Those hoping for more Prometheus and Bob episodes or a movie will be disappointed, however, as the writer revealed Nickelodeon appears to have little to no interest in revisiting the characters. The Prometheus And Bob tapes skits are easy to find on YouTube, for those KaBlam! fans who feel like a hit of nostalgia. Full episodes of KaBlam! are also available to stream on Paramount+.

Created by Robert Mittenthal (It's Pony, The Loud House, The Naked Brothers Band, The Henry & June Show, 100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd, Rugrats, The Adventures of Pete & Pete, Welcome Freshmen, Welcome to the Wayne), Will McRobb (Rocko's Modern Life, Doug, The Ren & Stimpy Show, The Adventures of Pete & Pete, Snow Day, Radio Free Roscoe, The Naked Brothers Band, Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, Sanjay and Craig, Welcome Freshmen), and Albie Hecht (SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, Blue’s Clues, Ryan's Mystery Playdate), the show was made using "chuckimation", a combination of stop-frame animation and live-action shots where things, including various action figures, toys, and dolls are simply thrown ("chucked") or dropped into frame or wiggled around to simulate talking. Many of the characters were voiced by radio personalities from Pittsburgh.

Paramount+ Adds Raft of Nickelodeon Classics

Paramount+, the newly launched streaming service from ViacomCBS, today (March 24) added another raft of classic Nickelodeon series to its programming library!

Paramount+ has today added Hey Dude, Salute Your Shorts, KABLAM!, Nickelodeon GUTS, Nick Arcade, You Can't Do That On Television (14 episodes), and Legends of the Hidden Temple! The news follows Paramount Plus added Eureeka's Castle on Tuesday, March 23.

In addition to the classic Nick series, Paramount+ has added modern classic True Jackson, VP, and modern favorites Frankie and Frank (which mainly aired on Nickelodeon's international channels) and The Bureau of Magical Things, ahead of its upcoming second season.

Paramount+ has also added missing seasons of AAAHH!!! Real Monsters, The Wild Thornberrys, Paradise Run and Clarissa Explains It All., and well as the first six episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants season 12. The service has also added the documentary SpongeBob DocuPants.

Tony Eastman, Veteran East Coast Animator And Director, Passes Away

Tony Eastman, a mainstay of the East Coast animation scene, has passed away.

An industry artist since the 1970s, Eastman enjoyed a prolific career working in series and commercials. At various times, he was an animator, storyboard artist, and director. He was the director of the pilot for Nickelodeon’s Doug (pictured at top) and went on to become the supervising director of the show’s first season. Other series he worked on include KaBlam!, Eureeka's Castle, Saturday Night Live: The Best of Saturday TV Funhouse, Codename: Kids Next Door, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Daria, Beavis and Butt-Head, Sheep in the Big City, and Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law. He also served as a creative consultant on Disney's version of Doug following the company's acquisition of the intellectual property.

Like many New York animators, the better part of Eastman’s work was done in the advertising industry and he animated countless commercial spots at studios like The Ink Tank and J.J. Sedelmaier Productions.

Peter Anthony “Tony” Eastman was born in 1942 into an animation family. His father Phil “P.D.” Eastman was a story artist who worked at Disney and UPA before finding fame as a children’s author and illustrator. Tony’s mother Mary Lou Whitham was a color model supervisor at Disney, where she met Phil before the pair left during the strike of 1941.

As a child, Tony Eastman showed a precocious talent for drawing. In a blog post, the cartoonist Kim Deitch (son of animation filmmaker Gene Deitch, who worked with P.D. Eastman) recalls a 14-year-old Tony showing him hundreds of flipbooks he had drawn. “Really,” Deitch adds, “he had already outgrown flipbooks and had started doing animation on regulation animation paper.”

In a comment on the same blog post, Eastman elaborated on his artistic development: “I wanted to shoot my flip books onto film … but instead, my dad suggested that I do new 12-field-size artwork to shoot (he probably figured it would lead me into thinking more long form about story, which it did). This led to the purchase of a 16 mm, 50-foot magazine load Bell & Howell camera.”

In a tribute to his late friend posted publicly on Facebook, J.J. Sedelmaier wrote: “He could work in ANY style of design and animation. People in the studio clamored to work on his stuff. He was FAST! He was thorough. He was a joy …”

Later in life, Eastman followed his father into children’s books. As “Peter Eastman,” he wrote and illustrated a trio of books featuring Fred and Ted, the canine stars of P.D. Eastman’s classic book Big Dog…Little Dog. He also contributed illustrations to the reissues of several of his father’s works.

Cote Zellers is the creator of Prometheus and Bob, The charming stop-motion animated Nickelodeon [KaBlam!] series about an alien trying to educate a caveman, which, while one of the best shows of its kind, somehow faded away into nostalgic obscurity.

Nickelodeon’s long-forgotten Prometheus And Bob deserves a second look

Nickelodeon’s heyday is often remembered for its tentpole programming, stuff like All That, Rocko’s Modern Life, and Rugrats. Amongst those bigger titles, however, was a bunch of smaller, weirder stuff that’s often left forgotten (even by ‘90s kids). Take, for example, Prometheus And Bob, the stop-motion short from the animation anthology KaBlam! that featured an alien attempting to teach a caveman the basics of human life. Remember that? Most people don’t, but creator, director, and voice actor Cote Zellers certainly does. Recently, Zellers sat down with AJ, the self-professed Prometheus And Bob super fan behind YouTube’s Cult Popture, to delve into his experience making the shorts and why his planned Prometheus And Bob feature never made it past development.

After getting some attention with an original, edgier Prometheus And Bob short, Zellers was tasked with creating a new, kid-friendly episode for KaBlam! every week. While the stop-motion process was painstaking, it also gave him complete creative control over the show’s aesthetic and humor. That changed, unfortunately, as the shorts’ popularity increased.

“I went to Paramount and had a meeting with Amy Heckerling and her producer. She was going to direct it,” Zellers says of Nickelodeon’s failed attempt to get a Promotheus And Bob live-action feature off the ground. “It was supposed to star Chris Farley and David Spade…but then Chris Farley died.” Inexplicably, the development process continued to move forward, and a script was written that Zellers calls “the worst thing [he] ever read.” Producers refused to let him rewrite it himself, and the production stalled out.

“Actually, a lot of those ideas from that Prometheus And Bob script showed up in that really horrible Jack Black Gulliver’s Travels movie,” Zellers says. “Same writer.”

Unfortunately for those of us who remember the pitch-perfect slapstick of the original shorts, it doesn’t look like a Prometheus And Bob resurrection is in the cards anytime soon. Nickelodeon still owns the rights and doesn’t seem too interested in doing anything with them. For now, at least, this alien and his dumb-as-rocks friend will be consigned to the realm of “Hey, remember that? That was weird.”

Nicktoons Facts: KaBlam! was an animated sketch comedy show created by Robert Mittenthal, and Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi (The Adventures of Pete & Pete, Sanjay and Craig). It premiered on October 11, 1996 -- the 6th Nicktoon. Each episode was hosted by two characters, Henry and June, and featured a collection of short films in different styles of animation, such as Sniz and Fondue, Action League Now!, Life With Loopy, Prometheus and Bob, Angela Anaconda, The Offbeats, and Patch Head. It was the only Nicktoon created for SNICK and ran on Nickelodeon for 48 episodes over 4 seasons. Nicktoons Facts: KaBlam! was an animated sketch comedy show created by Robert Mittenthal, Will McRobb, and Chris Viscardi. It premiered on October 11, 1996 -- the 6th Nicktoon. Each episode was hosted by two characters, Henry and June, and featured a collection of short films in different styles of animation. It was the only Nicktoon created for SNICK and ran on Nickelodeon for 48 episodes over 4 seasons. Kevin Kopelow And Heath Seifert Enter Development Deal At Nickelodeon

In a recent interview with Just Jared Jr., Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert revealed that, following the success of the Nickelodeon Ho-Ho Holiday Special, in which the duo served as writers, the television writing and producing team have signed a deal to develop brand-new projects for Nickelodeon!:

What will be your first project after the [Austin & Ally] series finale? What are you hoping your fans will think about it?

Heath: The first thing we did right away was we produced a holiday special on Nickelodeon. That was really fun because we love doing variety and love doing sketch. The first show we really worked on as writers was All That a long time ago. So we were excited to do that kind of project that tapped into that side of our brains again.

Kevin: And now…we have a development deal over at Nickelodeon.

Heath: We're developing that here but we're trying to develop projects that involve the Austin & Ally cast as well.

Kevin: Our cast are growing up, so they're not kids anymore, but we're still hoping to work with all of them again as well.

Heath: We're also just checking passion projects off of our lists too, with one being that we're writing a horror movie that we've had an idea about for a while.

Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert are no strangers to Nickelodeon, the pair wrote and produced many popular Nickelodeon shows and specials between 1994-2005, including All That, 100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd, KaBlam!, Kenan & Kel, the 1999 Kids' Choice Awards, Good Burger, Space Cases and Cousin Skeeter. Kevin Kopelow has also made several cameo appearances on hit Nickelodeon shows, including All That (as Kevin the Stage Manager), Kenan & Kel, Good Burger (as Sad Clown), and Figure It Out.
