'Solar Opposites' Alumni Land 'Odd Jobs' Animated Series at Prime Video

Mike McMahan and Dominic Dierkes are behind Odd Jobs, set in a future “late-stage capitalist hellscape.”

Prime Video is adding to its adult animation roster with a series from Solar Opposites alumni Mike McMahan and Dominic Dierkes.

The Amazon-owned streamer has picked up Odd Jobs, a show set 100 years or so in the future that follows a group of gig workers. The show comes from CBS Studios and animation studio Titmouse (Paramount+'s Star Trek: Lower Decks, Prime Video’s The Mighty Nein).

The series order for Odd Jobs comes on the heels of Solar Opposites concluding its six-season run on Hulu last fall. McMahan and Dierkes were executive producers on the final season.

The logline for Odd Jobs reads, “The year is 2127, the world is an extreme late-stage capitalist hellscape. The show follows a reluctant team of gig-workers as they travel around the neo Midwest, doing the weirdest most dangerous tasks the Odd Jobs app demands.”

“While wandering through the wilderness, we accidentally stumbled through a portal and found ourselves hundreds of years in the future,” McMahan and Dierkes said in a statement. “We witnessed bizarre and grotesque portents about where humanity is heading. Instead of acting on those warnings, we’re thrilled to turn them into an animated show.”

“Odd Jobs is sharp, absurd, and laugh-out-loud funny, taking a wildly imaginative look at a future that’s as chaotic as it is entertaining,” said Melissa Wolfe, head of animation at Amazon MGM Studios. “Mike and Dominic have built a bold, unpredictable world filled with hilarious characters, and we couldn’t be more excited to partner with CBS Studios and Titmouse to bring this new comedy to Prime Video audiences around the world.”

McMahan and Dierkes will executive produce along with Titmouse principles Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio and Ben Kalina, and Ghostbusters producer Amie Karp.

McMahan, who was an Emmy-winning writer, producer and showrunner on Rick and Morty, also created Star Trek: Lower Decks. Dierkes has also been a writer on shows such as The Mick, Workaholics, Ash vs. Evil Dead and acted on Mystery Team, Community, Parks and Recreation and Mad Men.

You Don’t Actually Own That Movie You Just 'Bought.' A New Class Action Lawsuit Targets Amazon Over Misleading 'Buy' Button

A suit challenges Prime Video telling people they can "buy" a movie when they're purchasing a license to watch it for a period of time.

A little known fact about movie and TV show “purchases” online: What’s being bought isn’t actually ownership of the title but rather a limited-time license for viewing access. Consider the $4.99 director’s cut of Alien on Amazon Prime Video. Cheap, right? But if the tech giant loses the rights to that version, the movie can be replaced with a different cut, like the one for theaters. And if Amazon loses the rights to the film altogether, it’ll completely disappear from the viewer’s library.

So should Amazon be able to say a consumer is “buying” that movie? Some people don’t think so, and they’ve turned to court.

On Friday, August 22, a proposed class action was filed in Washington federal court against Amazon over a “bait and switch” in which the company allegedly misleads consumers into believing they’ve purchased content when they’re only getting a license to watch, which can be revoked at any time.

The issue came to the forefront at the California legislature in 2023 when gamers discovered that their access to The Crew would be cut off once Ubisoft shut down servers for the game. After, the “Stop Killing Games” movement was born to stop publishers from destroying titles consumers had already bought.

Lisa Reingold, who filed the lawsuit, says she bought Nickelodeon's Bella and the Bulldogs — Volume 4 on Amazon in May for $20.79 but soon lost access to the title. It’s not an uncommon occurrence, similarly affecting consumers across digital stores, like those hosted by Apple and Google. If you bought Downton Abbey through Amazon as the five seasons came out from 2010 to 2015, you’d no longer have them by 2024.

The way in which digital transactions are structured, the lack of transparency around them and the streaming landscape is partly why physical media is kind-of-sort-of cool again. DVDs offer the ability, now and forever, to bypass the complicated web of licenses that leave fans unable to access their favorite titles.

The lawsuit accuses Amazon, which didn’t respond to The Hollywood Reporter's request for a comment, of misrepresenting the nature of movie and TV transactions during the purchase process. On its website and platform, the company tells consumers they can “buy” a movie. But hidden in a footnote on the confirmation page is fine print that says, “You receive a license to the video and you agree to our terms,” the complaint says.

The issue is already before a court. In a 2020 lawsuit alleging unfair competition and false advertising over the practice, Amazon maintained that its use of the word “buy” for digital content isn’t deceptive because consumers understand their purchases are subject to licenses. Quoting Webster’s Dictionary, it said that the term means “rights to the use or services of payment” rather than perpetual ownership and that its disclosures properly warn people that they may lose access. The court ultimately rebuffed Amazon’s bid to dismiss the lawsuit outside of a claim alleging a violation of Washington’s unjust enrichment law.

Recent legislative changes may make the lawsuit even more viable. Earlier this year, a California law went into effect barring the advertisement of a transaction as a “purchase” unless it offers unrestricted ownership of the product. Under the statute, sellers must obtain acknowledgement that buyers are aware they’re actually buying a limited license, in this case movies or TV shows, that can be revoked.

Amazon “does not meet the standards set by the statute for a clear and conspicuous notice that the thing they are purchasing is a revocable license to access the digital good,” writes Wright Noel, a lawyer for consumers looking to sue the company, in the complaint. “The warning is buried at the very bottom of the screen, in font that is considerably smaller than the other text on the screen.”

The lawsuit claims violations of California unfair competition, false advertising and consumer legal remedies laws. It seeks unspecified damages, including disgorgement of profits and punitive damages for allegedly intentionally malicious conduct.

Nickelodeon Titles Take Top Spots On Prime Video's Top 10 Most Streamed Kids Series List

According to Circana’s VP and Media Entertainment industry advisor John Buffone, 90% of US households with internet access subscribe to at least one SVOD service these days, and the average is five. This market growth has been driven, in part, by households with children under age 18—nearly all of these homes (97%) are paying for some form of streaming, and they tend to subscribe to more services on average as well.

Nick Jr. Global

Mirroring the linear TV landscape, most of the top-performing kids series on SVODs belong to well-established franchises and networks, including Nickelodeon. And this broad trend is poised to continue throughout 2025.

For Amazon's Prime Video, beloved Nickelodeon series make up half of the top 10 most-watched kids shows on the platform, with SpongeBob SquarePants in first place, followed by PAW Patrol in second, Blaze and the Monster Machines in third, Dora the Explorer in seventh place, and Bubble Guppies in eighth. They're joined by Peppa Pig, which makes the list in fourth place.

Meanwhile, Avatar: The Last Airbender was the second most-watched kids show on Netflix, however, it's unclear whether the list means the animated Nickelodeon series or the streamer's recently debuted live-action adaptation. Avatar: The Last Airbender is joined by Gabby's Dollhouse in third place and Peppa Pig in eighth.

'Big Nate' Season Two Released in Full on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video

Earlier this year, Paramount made the surprising decision to cancel and pull the Paramount+ Original series Big Nate from the streaming service and Nickelodeon during its second season run, with the second half of the season not getting to be released on Paramount+ and Nickelodeon, disappointing fans of the show.

'Big Nate' season two

In a surprising twist, however, the entirety of Big Nate season two (26 episodes) has now become available to stream on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video. It's currently unknown whether this is a mistake, or whether the streamers picked up the rights to save the series from going unaired.

'Zokie of Planet Ruby' Lands on Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime has today (Dec. 31) premiered Nickelodeon's brand new animated series, Zokie of Planet Ruby, with all 26 episodes from the creator-driven 2D-animated series' first season now available to stream on the service.

Zokie of Planet Ruby

In Zokie of Planet Ruby, quirky vlogger Ruby discovers her only channel follower is a space alien from Planet Pudge named Zokie Sparkleby, and they quickly become BFFs. Filming daily adventures, Ruby teaches Zokie about her version of Earth and Zokie works to control his magic.

Zokie of Planet Ruby was originally announced during Nickelodeon Upfront 2021 under the working title ZJ Sparkleton. This was later changed to Zokie Sparkleby.

It's currently unknown whether today's release of Zokie of Planet Ruby was intentional or not, as it came out of the blue without any prior announcement, and the official releases date for each episode currently say "December 31, 1899" or "January 1, 1900".

Zokie of Planet Ruby is produced by Nelvana, a world-leading international producer, distributor and licensor of children’s animated and live-action content. Although the show's official imagery on Amazon Prime feature Nickelodeon branding, there isn't a Nickelodeon logo on the show's title card nor a Nickelodeon Productions card at each episode.

Zokie of Planet Ruby is created by Brian Morante (Penguins of Madagascar, Breadwinners, SpongeBob SquarePants). Mike Geiger (3 Amigonauts, Winston Steinburger and Sir Dudley Ding Dong) is the director and Lynne Warner (Corn & Peg, The Most Magnificent Thing) is the supervising producer for Nelvana.

"The show I created at Nickelodeon just dropped on Amazon Prime.  So many people poured so much heart and humor and weirdness into this show," said Morante on X/Twitter, adding: "Big shout out to everyone at Nelvana where we produced this thing, and @atomiccartoons [Atomic Cartoons] who did an amazing job animating it. I'm sure we crushed some people with how much work this was to make. Also I had @mikegeiger and @optimusscotto [Scott O'Brien], @mollfrylock [Mollie Fry-Lick] helping guide this thing."

Zokie of Planet Ruby season one episode guide:

S1 E1 - The Beginning Times: When Zokie crashes his spaceship in Ruby's apartmentcomplex, Ruby finally finds her BAF (Best Alien Friend). (season one premiere)

S1 E2 - More Than a Sandwich/Pigeon Enemy #1: Ruby helps Zokie find his true value on Earth when her parents challenge him to do anything but make sandwiches. Ruby and Zokie help Earl overcome the pigeon mafia for a dumpster taco, reaping the benefits of his new tastebuds.

S1 E19 - Hot Pudge Sludge Day/Love Nuts: Ruby and Zokie try to recreate a Pudgian holiday on Earth, without putting anyone at risk in the process. Ruby and Zokie set up a blind date for Earl and Konko, who thinks the date is with Zokie.

S1 E20 - Los Muchos Amores de Earl/Tweenkle Rebrands: Ruby and Zokie take advangage of Earl's lucid dreaming by making him star in a soap-opera-esque show for the neighbors. Tweenkle turns 16 and decides to rebrand her image, while Ruby and Zokie try to return her lost cellphone.

S1 E21 - Holiday Humbug: In a spin on A Christmas Carol, Ruby and Zokie try and reinvigorate Earl's holiday spirit when they find out he hates the holidays.

S1 E22 - Dazzling Dee/All-American Anti-Scooper: The magician Dee is working for disappears mid-act, so Ruby and Zokie help find her inner magic to save the show. Ruby and Zokie make a true crime documentary, ready to do what it takes to expose an anti-poop-scooping pet owner.

S1 E23 - Unboxing/Zokie Sparkleby: The Most Perfect Earfling: Ruby and Zokie make an unboxing video to get the people of Earth to appreciate Ruby's creative genius. Zokie sets out to become the perfect 'Earthling' when he thinks his alienness might be causing problems for the Studebakers.

Amazon Announces Amazon Glow; To Feature SpongeBob and Dora the Explorer Content

Introducing Amazon Glow—A Whole New Way to Bring Families Together for Fun and Learning

Kids can read stories, play games, create art, and have fun blending physical and digital worlds with Glow’s interactive projected space—remote loved ones engage simultaneously on their own tablet using a free, companion app

Glow combines immersive projection, sensing, and video technologies to make it feel like you’re having fun in-person

Glow comes with 1-year of Amazon Kids+ bringing hundreds of hours of fun, including new games and activities designed specifically for Glow; Includes content from Disney, Mattel, Nickelodeon, and Sesame Workshop

SEATTLE--Sept. 28, 2021--(NASDAQ: AMZN)—Amazon today announced Amazon Glow, a new interactive device that brings a new magic to video calls and transforms the way kids connect with remote loved ones by participating in activities together. During video calls on Glow, kids see remote loved ones on a dedicated 8” display while reading stories, playing games, and creating art on a 19” touch-sensitive, projected space. At the same time, remote family and friends see the child on a tablet and participate in the same activities using the free Glow app. Glow creates a virtual experience that feels like being together in the same room.

“Glow brings an entirely new level of fun that lets kids be kids and welcomes grown-ups into an exciting new way to connect and bond, even when they’re far away,” said Joerg Tewes, General Manager, Amazon Glow. “We’ve created an unbreakable, supersized, projected surface like no other, fusing digital and physical fun that excites kids and delights grown-ups with all they can do together.”

So much fun, together, with Glow

Activities on Glow create engaging, immersive experiences with audio, video, and tactile elements. And, with the included 1-year of Amazon Kids+, Glow provides access to thousands of books and dozens of interactive games and art activities. With Glow, kids can have fun and hone their skills with remote family members and friends, who in return, can share real-time encouragement. New interactive content, including more games, will arrive for Glow later this year. Together kids and remote loved ones can:

  • Read: Pick from thousands of children’s books to read on the 19” projected virtual space, and delight in engaging with rainbow pointers, spotlights, and word bubbles for added reading excitement
  • Play: Have fun with classic games like Chess, Checkers, Go Fish, and Memory Match with new creative twists, and new games like ABC Charades and Paddle Battle
  • Draw: Create art using a palette of colors with digital pencils, crayons, paint brushes, or spray paint on a variety of themed art packs. Add stickers to amp up the creativity and use the vacuum eraser for a fresh start
  • Discover: Find hidden magic with animations and sounds that will delight kids and grown-ups alike; and unlock levels in games to continuously challenge young minds

These activities on Glow are made even more memorable when beloved characters join in on the fun. Glow brings the magic of Disney to life with friends like Anna and Elsa from Disney’s Frozen, Woody and Buzz from Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story, and more. Fans of Hot Wheels and Barbie will love seeing those characters from Mattel. Kids can have fun with SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer from Nickelodeon. And from Sesame Workshop, Elmo, Zoe, and many more of their friends on Sesame Street are also on Glow.

Glow blends digital and physical worlds to provide even more fun

The best of digital and physical worlds come together on Glow to fuel creativity and develop problem-solving skills for kids.

  • Object scanning. Childhood dreams of turning everyday objects into digital fun are now a reality with Glow’s object scanning feature. Kids can turn a favorite toy into a custom jigsaw puzzle by smashing the digital scan of the toy into virtual pieces to reassemble. Or, scan a favorite school art project and transform it into a new masterpiece with the help of a remote loved one.
  • Glow Bits. Kids and families can experience a new way to have fun with physical objects with Glow Bits learning kits. The first Glow Bits learning kit is the Tangram puzzle game, where kids use physical shapes and their remote family member uses digital shapes to solve challenges together. Tangram Bits is bundled with the purchase of Glow, and additional Glow Bits coming soon will be sold separately.

Worry-free virtual fun

Like all Amazon Kids products, Glow is built with parental controls front and center. Kids can only call pre-approved contacts that parents select. With the Amazon Parent Dashboard, parents can see who their kids are contacting. Parents can instantly disable cameras and microphones on the device by simply closing the visible privacy shutter.

“This category-defying product has been created with safety as a priority,” said Stephen Balkam, founder and CEO of the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI). “By combining an ad-free, walled garden experience within the device and app, Amazon Glow will bring kids, parents, and grandparents together safely in new and highly interactive ways during these unique times.”

Pricing & Availability

Glow is available at an introductory, early access price of $249.99 (MSRP of $299.99), and comes with a mat, a mat case, 1-year of Amazon Kids+, and is bundled with Tangram Bits. Glow also comes with a 2-year worry-free guarantee—if it breaks, return it, and we'll replace it for free. Glow works with a free mobile app on Android and iOS tablets, with Fire OS coming soon, so remote loved ones can connect and interact seamlessly with the kids in their lives, on devices they already own.

Customers can request an invitation to be part of the early access Glow program starting today at www.amazon.com/Glow. Glow will begin shipping to U.S. early access customers in the coming weeks.
