Final Bow: Ethan Slater's Last Days as SpongeBob Will Be 'the Best Seven Minutes Ever'

The Broadway star reflects on how building a real-life version of the cartoon was like carving a statue out of marble.

For more than half a decade of workshops, rehearsals, and performances, Ethan Slater has been immersed in the underwater world of Bikini Bottom. In the critically acclaimed Broadway musical SpongeBob SquarePants, Slater plays the titular absorbent hero, and as the production heads toward its final performance on Sunday, September 16, he's getting ready to reacclimate to life on dry land.

But first, Slater is taking a few minutes to soak in the highlights of his time creating the onstage SpongeBob and the "best seven minutes ever" to celebrate a buoyant Broadway experience. Check out Ethan's sponge-tastic interview with TheaterMania below!

1) What is your favorite line that you get to say?
I'm always touched by the moment when I say, "It doesn't have to be like this. We might only have seven minutes left, but we could make them the best seven minutes ever." I look into the eyes of the people right around me, and I can feel that that line hits home every night as we near the end of that particular show, and we realize that we're nearing the end of this run that has meant so much to us.

2) What is the best inside joke from among the company?
It doesn't really make much sense, but we had this one celebratory bit we would do when something happened: We would start doing yoga poses like tree pose or downward dog or trying to do crow and failing. When we closed in Chicago we all did that bit onstage after the bow.

3) What was the worst technical difficulty you experienced during the run?
By far one of my favorite moments — and Danny [Skinner, who plays Patrick] is going to kill me for saying this — is at one point he is supposed to fly in and we had one show where for some reason he could not fly. So I look up and he's not there, and so I say my line and I look down and Danny is running in, in slow motion, doing everything he's supposed to do in the air but on the ground instead. I've never had to stifle a laugh so hard in my life. It was magic.

4) What is the most interesting present you received at the stage door?
One of my absolute favorite pieces of fan art is this fanzine that we got with illustrations by different artists of each scene throughout the show in chronological order.

5) Who is the coolest person to come see the show?
Recently they called a guest for me at the stage door, and I went to see who it was, and it was Christian Slater. He came back and we were talking and he was like, "I saw articles about the show, it looked amazing, and then I saw your last name and I thought 'I've got to go find out if we're related.'" My entire life people have been saying like, "Are you related to Christian Slater?" and I would say, "I don't think so but I wish." So for him to come back and say, "Do you think we're related?" is a pretty good culmination of that.

6) Which of the artists who wrote music for SpongeBob were you most fanboying over?
It would have to be John Legend. When I found out that he was writing a song for the show, that was a true freak-out moment. And then when we finally got the song, [director] Tina [Landau] came in, she had a CD in her hand, she said, "We have the demo. Everyone sit on the floor, close your eyes." And she turned off the lights, put on the demo. It was just like a collective little cry because it was perfect.

7) What is your favorite Tina Landau-in-rehearsal moment?
When we were early in the workshops, she would say, "All right guys, you have 10 minutes, find a partner, go off and create a visual scene that is the end of the world in Bikini Bottom, whatever that means." People started coming up with these little ideas and then they became bigger ideas and then we would do a presentation after those 10 minutes and she would just applaud all of us. It was this incredibly creative collaborative process.

8) What was the toughest SpongeBob mannerism to get right?
It was all pretty hard in some ways. In the early workshops I was working with a number of amazingly talented creative people, including this guy David Newman. I would bring my lunch into the auxiliary rehearsal room, and he and I would work through lunch on how does SpongeBob make a right turn, how does SpongeBob walk backwards or do a pirouette? It's how I imagine you make a statue out of marble. It starts as this big block, you get the general shape, and then it really comes down to those intimate little details.

9) What's your favorite SpongeBob episode?
It has to be "Bubble Buddy." SpongeBob's friends aren't around to play on this day so he blows a bubble and it becomes his friend and everybody in the town is like getting a little frustrated because he's acting as though this bubble is a person and then this whole mob ends up forming and they're saying pop the bubble. It's real sad and then all of a sudden out of nowhere Bubble Buddy puts on a bubble top hat, hails a bubble cab, and floats away and off into the sun, it's just like Grease. That's always been my favorite moment, when one thing becomes something totally different. It's so SpongeBob and it's so great.

10) What is the most memorable moment of audience interaction that you've had?
During one show SpongeBob decided to take the risk of climbing the last leg of the mountain to save the day, and a little kid in the audience just screamed, "I believe in you SpongeBob, you can do it SpongeBob!" And it was just this perfect moment.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Invade Bakersfield, Calif. to Celebrate 'Rise of the TMNT'

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles took a break from their busy crime-fighting schedule to make a visit to Bakersfield in California today (Saturday, September 15 2018)!

The AT&T stores on Ming Avenue hosted Raphael, Michelangelo, Donatello and Leonardo for a special event promoting the upcoming brand-new TV series Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which premieres Monday, September 17 at 6:30pm ET/PT on Nickelodeon USA and DIRECTV.

TMNT fans of all ages got to take photos with the turtles as well as participate in games, face-painting, giveaways and more. AT&T employees were also on hand to serve anyone interested in signing up for DIRECTV service.

Ramon Salmeron brought his 5-year-old son Ramon to the event after hearing about it on the radio.

“I think it’s awesome. It’s different,” he told Bakersfield.com “The kids don’t get to see something like this too often, so It’s nice.”

Salmeron said his son is a big TMNT fan. In that regard, he’s following in his father’s footsteps.

“I grew up watching the original cartoon show and the (90s) movies,” he said. “It’s surreal when you grow up watching something and then your kid starts watching it. We watch some of the old stuff, but he prefers the new TV shows and movies.”

When asked what his favorite character is, Ramon was quick to answer.

“Mikey! I like his nunchucks,” he said.

Jessica Hernandez brought her 4-year-old son Ivan after reading about the event by accident. She said she was looking up something else online when she came across an article about the event and decided to bring her son.

“It’s wonderful. I love it,” she said of the event. “We’ve never been to anything like this before.”

Hernandez said her son has enjoyed the recent TV shows and movies. She grew up watching the original animated cartoons as a kid.

“They’re a lot different now, because they’re animated through the computer,” she said. “It’s changed a lot, but the characters are still the same. It’s pretty cool that he likes it too. I have a lot of good memories that come back to me when I watch (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) with him.”

Brandon Kiwanis Club, FL to Host Day of Play 2018 Event on Saturday, Sept. 22

Brandon, FL - The Brandon Kiwanis Club and the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida will host a Day of Play from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at David Park at 502 E Sadie St., Brandon Park!

The free event will focus on educating and advocating for healthy lifestyles, and will also will serve as a Gold Award project for Angelena Baldi, a senior at Armwood High School.

Inspired by Nickelodeon’s world-renowned Worldwide Day of Play, Baldi and the Kiwanis Club are bringing the idea to the Brandon community to encourage children to get active. Angelena, 17, said this type of event is important now with increasing obesity rates in children along with an increasing amount of technology geared toward kids.

"Our goal is to create a fun and interactive day for local kids, by bringing together local resources and companies while establishing this as an annual event put on by the Kiwanis Club of Brandon," Angelena told the Tampa Bay Times.

Courtesy of Angelena Baldi Angelena Baldi poses in Capri, a trip she took with her Girl Scout troop after fundraising for five years. Baldi will host the Day of Play for her Gold Award project along with the Kiwanis Club of Brandon.

When coming up with ideas for her Gold Award project, Angelena had a difficult time finding something that would click and be worth the amount of work it takes to complete. What inspired her to take on the Day of Play was her connections to the Key Club and Kiwanis Club.

"I’m combining my work with Girl Scouts and the Kiwanis Club, which is special to me," Angelena said.

She said this is about the opportunity to give back and provide a sustainable project the Kiwanis Club can use for years to come. Angelena also said she hopes this will serve as a way to educate kids on the importance of healthy eating healthy and exercise.

The free family event will feature a bouncy castle, fun field day games, educational opportunities and more. The event is a proud supporter of Project Replenish, and will also be accepting school and teacher supplies.

Nickelodeon Renews 'Double Dare'; Extends 'Double Dare Live' Tour Until 2020

Nickelodeon legend and original Double Dare host Marc Summers revealed the very exciting news to ToonZone Forums member @classicnickfan during an appearance to promote his new documentary On Your Marc that, following Nickelodeon's Double Dare revival garnering great ratings, becoming an instant hit with viewers when the new series premiered in June 2018, Nickelodeon has renewed the series, and will be returning to the studio to make more brand-new episodes of Double Dare "in 2019"!

It's currently unknown whether the new episodes will be produced as part of the first season, or as part of a second season.

Marc also revealed that Nickelodeon's Double Dare Live tour of the US is currently planned to be an annual event until at least 2020! The news follows Red Tail-Live, the producers of the live stage show, announcing that they will be rolling the second leg of the Double Dare Live tour during Spring 2018, which will see the show visit the West side of the USA!

Inspired by Nickelodeon's iconic '80s game show of the same name, the new Double Dare TV series is hosted by digital creator and actress Liza Koshy, with original host Marc Summers providing color commentary on the challenges and lending his vast knowledge of the game and expertise to each episode, and sees a new generation of fans compete in the messiest and most physically challenging competition of their lives. The brand-new Double Dare series premiered this summer and ranks in the top three shows with Kids 6-11 on all TV. The series attracted an average of 1.4 million viewers during its premiere week—making it the most-viewed series on kids’ TV this year.

In an indication of the reboot’s multi-generational appeal, Double Dare ranked number one in its timeslot among kids and teens between ages 2 and 14 on both impressions and share, and the Monday, June 25th premiere was Nick’s best series launch among adults 18-49 in more than five years, according to Nielsen.

The original Double Dare premiered on Oct. 6, 1986, on Nickelodeon, and ran from 1986-1993, making it the network’s longest running game show. Marc Summers served as the show’s original host from 1986-1993. Shortly after its debut, Double Dare became one of the most popular original daily programs on cable television. The series went into syndication in 1988, and was later revived as Super Sloppy Double Dare in 1989. The show also ran on broadcast television as Family Double Dare in 1988, followed by new versions on Nick, including Double Dare 2000. The US version inspired localised series in the UK (on the BBC) and Australia.

On Your Marc, inspired by his 2016 one man play The Life and Slimes of Marc Summers, is a feature length documentary film in which Summers, an Indiana native, looks back on his life and “slimes”. The documentary combines a scrappy, “anything goes” appeal with an informative look at the nature of celebrity. Along the way, Summers reveals how he survived cancer, a recent, near-fatal car crash, and a crippling case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Full information about the movie can be found at https://www.marcsummersmovie.com/about.

Nickelodeon’s Double Dare Live is a multi-city live stage tour inspired by the iconic TV game show Double Dare. Featuring original host Marc Summers and his beloved sidekick Robin Russo, the live stage show will debut in Fayetteville, NC, on October 30 and will tour North America through November.

Double Dare Live will feature two teams comprised of selected audience members competing to win prizes by answering brain-bending trivia questions, completing messy physical challenges and ultimately facing the legendary obstacle course.

Tickets (including VIP packages) are on sale now. Fans can visit doubledarelivetour.com for a list of upcoming Double Dare Live tour cities, times, ticket information and to to register for a chance to be a contestant on the live show.
