‘Mandalorian’ Tops Parrot Analytics’ SVOD Originals Chart for 4th Week

The Disney+ “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian” remained at No. 1 on Parrot Analytics’ digital originals rankings the week ended Dec. 14, its fourth straight week on top.

A “digital original” is Parrot’s term for a multi-episode series in which the most recent season was first made available on a streaming platform such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu or Disney+.

For the week, “The Mandalorian” registered 109 million average daily Demand Expressions, the proprietary metric used by Parrot Analytics to measure global demand for TV content. That was down 8.4% in expressions compared with the previous week.

On Parrot’s list of overall TV shows, including broadcast and cable, “Mandalorian” was No. 2, unseated after three weeks by Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob SquarePants,” as the popular cartoon character appeared in The Spongebob Musical: Live on Stage, which was simulcast across four Nick-owned channels Dec. 7. It marked the first time in 25 weeks an SVOD series wasn’t on top of the overall TV demand chart, since “Game of Thrones” at the end of June.

Netflix’s “Stranger Things” climbed back to No. 2 on the digital originals chart, registering 66.3 million expressions, down 10.1% from the previous week.

Swapping spots with “Stranger Things” was DC Universe’s “Titans,” which slid to No. 3 on the digital exclusives chart, with expressions down 15.9% to 62.8 million. While finale of the second season was released Nov. 29, a glimpse of the show was seen in the CW’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event Dec. 8.

Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” jumped two spots to No. 4, with expressions up 49% to 41.3 million. The third season of the Award-winning series was released Dec. 6.

Netflix’s “Lucifer,” stayed at No. 5, its expressions up 19.7% to 34.9 million. Similarly to “Titans,” “Lucifer” star Tom Ellis made a cameo on the CW “Crisis” crossover Dec. 10.

Amazon Prime Video’s fourth season of “The Expanse,” which was released Dec. 12, joined the digital originals top 10 at No. 7, from No. 14 the previous week. Expressions were up 34.4% to 32.9 million.

The Apple TV+ crime drama “Truth Be Told” climbed to No. 10 from No. 70 the previous week, with expressions up 151.5% to 27.8 million.

The Demand Expressions metric draws from a wide variety of data sources, including video streaming, social media activity, photo sharing, blogging, commenting on fan and critic rating platforms, and downloading and streaming via peer-to-peer protocols and file sharing sites.

Parrot Analytics also just unveiled its new public-facing website with demand data about select TV shows for the U.S. and other markets. The “Truth Be Told” profile can be found here.

Media Play News has teamed with Parrot Analytics to provide readers with a weekly top 10 of the most popular digital original TV series in the United States, based on the firm’s proprietary metric called Demand Expressions, which measures global demand for TV content through a wide variety of data sources, including video streaming, social media activity, photo sharing, blogging, commenting on fan and critic rating platforms, and downloading and streaming via peer-to-peer protocols and file sharing sites.

From Kidscreen:

SpongeBob tops the in-demand show rank

Kids clamored to Nickelodeon's underwater character online, replacing Peppa Pig as the most in-demand series this past month, according to Parrot Analytics.

After getting bested by Peppa Pig last month, SpongeBob SquarePants has swum to the top and is globally the most in-demand kids show between November 16 to December 15, according to Parrot Analytics. The spike in popularity is most likely because of the SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical (pictured), which aired on Nickelodeon on December 7, according to a Parrot spokesperson.

By measuring social media interactions, social video views, online research for the shows and piracy numbers, Parrot uses a proprietary algorithm to figure out what the demand is for the average show. It then weighs individual series against this average to determine a rank.

This past month SpongeBob had 13.3-times more demand than the average kids show, up from 9.3 times last month. eOne’s Peppa Pig and PJ Masks came second and third with 12.1 times and 9.4 times the average demand, respectively. The top 10 is rounded out by Steven Universe (nine times), Naruto: Shippuden (8.8 times), Masha and the Bear (8.5 times), PAW Patrol (eight times), Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir (7.9 times), Talking Tom and Friends (7.1 times) and Pokémon (seven times).

Talking Tom and Friends is new to the list this month, knocking Teen Titans Go! down a few spots to 12th place with 6.4 times the demand against the average kids show globally. Steven Universe jumped to 4th (from 6th) and Naruto to 5th (from 8th). All of the top-eight fit into the “outstanding category” which only 2.7% of shows were able to achieve this month.

Social Climbers Charts: Mark Hamill Returns to Top Actors’ Top 3 Amid ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ Premiere

The charts rank the most popular personalities and TV shows based on data from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.
Amid the return of the Star Wars franchise to the silver screen, Mark Hamill leaps to No. 3 on The Hollywood Reporter’s Top Actors chart dated Jan. 3.

THR’s Social Climbers charts are rankings of the most popular entities on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube, with global data provided by social media analytics company MVPindex. The chart's methodology blends engagement to entities’ social media accounts along with weekly additions of followers/subscribers. The latest tracking week ended Dec. 24.

“One last time…” wrote Hamill in social media posts showing him with Star Wars co-star Carrie Fisher, re-creating a photo they had taken together during the series’ original theatrical run. The latter half of the photo was taken prior to Fisher’s Dec. 27, 2016, passing.

Hamill’s Dec. 20 tweet was the biggest by an actor in the Dec. 18-24 tracking week, coming concurrent with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, reportedly the last in the nine-movie Skywalker saga, which premiered in theaters that day.

Hamill sits behind Dwayne Johnson, who rules Top Actors for a 65th week (and sixth in a row), a week removed from the theatrical release of Jumanji: The Next Level, in which he stars alongside Top Actors’ No. 2 for the week, Kevin Hart.

On Top Scripted, SpongeBob SquarePants rules for the first time in its 25th week on the list, thanks in part to a 5% jump in overall social media conversation. The long-running Nickelodeon cartoon’s Instagram account continued to post stills, videos and memes from the show, led in the latest tracking week by a Dec. 23 upload showing the titular character “getting ready for the holidays” by clipping his toenails.

Meanwhile, Top Unscripted features The Voice at No. 1. NBC’s singing competition spends a second straight week atop the list (and fifth overall) thanks to a 32% boost in overall social engagement concurrent with the conclusion of its 17th season. Jake Hoot, coached by Kelly Clarkson, was named the latest winner.

From AfterBuzz TV:

REECE CADDELL ECSTATIC ABOUT “ALL THAT” GETTING 13 MORE EPISODES

Ready yet, get set, it’s All That! Nickelodeon’s All That revival has been extended for thirteen more episodes!

Cast member Reece Caddell shared the cast’s chant before each show as well as her excitement that there will be more episodes. She joined AfterBuzz TV and filled the studio with energy discussing her reaction to the news.

“When we found out [about the new episodes], it was like, our, like, it was like someone had just like dropped a bomb of sparkles and unicorns,” Caddell said, “cause suddenly everyone was jumping up and down. We were all like, ‘oh my gosh.’ It was, it was just such a rad moment to be in.”

For everyone who isn’t a nineties kid, All That initially aired from 1994 until 2005 and was the staple of most nineties children’s lives. Most of us nineties kids tuned in every week to watch talent such as Kenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell, Lori Beth Denberg, and (eventually) Amanda Bynes. Every Saturday night, kids around the world tuned in to SNICK—Nickelodeon’s Saturday night lineup—to catch All That among other shows.

Brian Robbins, who initially created the show and is currently Nickelodeon’s president, decided he wanted to revive All That. In early 2019, he announced there’d be an All That revival which has brought a new generation to a show once loved by so many kids.

Caddell, who began acting in commercials at the age of five, ended up on projects such as Comedy Bang! Bang!, The Millers, and Schooled before landing the gig on All That.

She’s played a very integral part of this revival even though she’s had some very big shoes to fill. On the very first episode, she took over an original segment called Vital Information With Lori Beth Denberg, and Caddell has hit the ground running. She told AfterBuzz TV about the special bond she shares with the rest of the cast and discussed how thrilled she was to learn that Aria Brooks would be joining in the upcoming episodes.

“We loved her!” Caddell exclaimed. “She, we clicked immediately. She is so sweet. She has such a, like a distinct sense of humor. All of us have different senses of humor, and hers like completely just immediately fit in. We love her so much.”

Near the end of the interview, as a fun way to wrap up, AfterBuzz host Jeff Williams asked Cadell what character she hopes to play next, and Caddell instantly replied without a beat.

“Umm, I would like to be an alien in a sketch,” she said. “cause I think that would be really cool, and we could have, like, long ears or something.”

Fortunately, we’ve got another thirteen episodes to look forward to, and Caddell just might get the chance to play an alien. Be sure to tune in and listen to her interview with AfterBuzz TV!

There’s no news yet for when All That will return, but until then we’ve got the Are You Afraid of the Dark revival currently airing on YouTube for your 2k19, nineties fix!

Actress Aria Brooks talks working on Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings on Netflix and more

During a recent interview with singer and actress Aria Brooks, we discussed her work on Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings series, Nickelodeon’s All That revival, and much more. Continue reading for additional details.
Aria Brooks is a rising star who has been picking up roles on major projects. Brooks recently played part in Harriet, and now she’s appearing in the Netflix series, Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings.

For anyone unfamiliar with Heartstrings, the Netflix series consists of eight episodes that center around stories adapted from Dolly Parton’s most famous songs. The stories told are rather wholesome, touching on themes perfect for the holiday season. “If I Had Wings” being a good example.

As for Brooks, she appears in the episode entitled “Cracker Jack” as the adorable Nola. We don’t want to give too much away if you haven’t seen it, but we will say that Brooks had an excellent performance for her first Netflix appearance.

In addition to a part on Netflix’s Heartstrings, Aria Brooks can also be seen in Nickelodeon’s All That revival. It was resurrected in 2019, but fans will have to wait a few weeks to see more. A release date for the next episode has yet to be announced, though our guess is it’ll happen towards the beginning of the year rather than after an extended hiatus.

For more on Aria Brooks’ upcoming projects, you can check out the transcript of our interview with the young actress [here].

[...]

HR: Speaking of future projects, you’ve been cast on Nickelodeon’s revival of All That and you’re a series regular on the sketch comedy series. What, if anything, can you tell us about your work on the show?

Brooks: Working on All That has been a dream come true. I get to work with seven talented and very funny castmates who have become my extended family. The sketches that I’ve been in have truly challenged my improv skills and pushed me to make a variety of choices without second-guessing myself. I’ve also had to do a ton of research which, luckily for me, is watching TV and movies. I also get to work with some of the original All That stars and they are very helpful on set.

HR: Did you participate in any particular sketches that you believe will make a big impression on audiences?

Brooks: The writers are constantly coming up with new sketches and characters for me that are guaranteed to leave a big impression on the audience. Be sure to check out the new episodes in January.

HR: Having already worked on the show, did the notion of participating in a revival make you nervous while preparing for the role? I ask because reboots and revivals tend to garner a lot of harsh criticisms regardless of content, so did that place any sort of pressure on you?

Brooks: I was a little nervous joining the reboot cast because I wanted the approval of the original All That fans, but people are harsh critics regardless. I eventually became more concerned about doing a good job on set and, making sure I could handle the responsibilities of being a series regular. Of course, I hope old and new fans enjoy the show, but my focus is to just do the best I can.

HR: Outside of your on-screen acting, do you have any live performances coming up? And are you working on any new music at the moment?

Brooks: I don’t have any live performances scheduled…yet. I am working on music so that when the time comes to release my album, I’ll be ready.

HR: Are you collaborating with any artists on your music-based projects?

Brooks: There are no plans yet, but I’m always open to collaborating with other up and coming artists in the future.

Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings is currently streaming on Netflix. Nickelodeon’s All That returns in 2020
