Nickelodeon NOT Currently Working on New 'SpongeBob' Spin-Off Featuring Squidward

SpongeBob SquarePants executive producer Vincent Waller has confirmed on Twitter that Nickelodeon isn't currently producing a music-based SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off centered on Squidward Tentacles - however, he doesn't completely rule out a Squidward spin-off in the future:

Waller also addressed the rumor that Stephen Hillenburg, the late creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, purportedly didn't want the beloved animated series to have any spin-offs:

The news comes as Nickelodeon is preparing to bow the network's first SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years.

Although there are currently no plans for a Squidward spin-off, Nickelodeon is reportedly producing two feature-length SpongeBob spin-off movies for Netflix.

The CG-animated prequel (13 episodes) follows 10-year-old SpongeBob during his summer at sleepaway camp and stars Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks) and Mr. Lawrence (Plankton), all of whom are reprising their iconic roles in this new series.

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years will also feature returning SpongeBob SquarePants voice cast members Mary Jo Catlett (Mrs. Puff), Jill Talley (Karen) and Lori Alan (Pearl), among others. Additionally, Carlos Alazraqui (Rocko's Modern Life, The Casagrandes) and Kate Higgins (Blaze and the Monster Machines) will join the cast as new characters Nobby and Narlene, narwhal siblings who live in the woods surrounding the camp.

In the new series, SpongeBob and his pals spend the summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral.

Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller (SpongeBob SquarePants) serve as co-executive producers on Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, which is produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank.

Nickelodeon Receives 13 Nominations in the 47th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) has announced the fantastic news that Nickelodeon, the number-one entertainment brand for kids, has received 13 nominations in the 47th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards!

The Daytime Emmy® Awards recognize outstanding achievement in daytime television programming. The awards are presented to individuals and programs broadcast between 2:00 am and 6:00 pm in the U.S., as well as certain categories of digital and syndicated programming of similar content.

This year’s awards honor content from more than 2,700 submissions that originally premiered in calendar-year 2019. The submissions were judged by a pool of 1,000 peer professionals from across the television industry whose confidential ballots were then tabulated by the independent accounting firm of Lutz & Carr, LLP.

The winners of Daytime Emmy Awards 2020 will be announced during a two-hour special on Friday, June 26 (8:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. The special will feature award recipients and other special guests appearing from home in light of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

The June 26 telecast will mark the 14th time CBS has broadcast the Daytime Emmys®, more than any other network. The special will be produced by the National Academy and Associated Television International (ATI), which previously produced Daytime Emmy® ceremonies on The CW in 2009 and on CBS in 2010 and 2011.

“In these challenging times, daytime has been a primary influence in staying connected with its audience, entertaining them, and keeping them informed,” said 47th Annual Daytime Emmys® executive producer and director David McKenzie of Associated Television International. “We are honored to be a part of it. We are also excited for the challenge of introducing a new format that will celebrate the contributions of daytime television.”

Pluto TV Launches on Verizon

Pluto TV and Verizon today (Thursday, July 23) activated their game-changing distribution partnership and revealed new programming details, Deadline reports.

Starting today, 100,000-plus hours of free, ad-supported programming on ViacomCBS-owned Pluto TV are available to Verizon customers. The service will come in the form of an app on Android mobile devices and pre-installed on Fios cable boxes and Stream TV and 5G Amazon Home Fire devices.

The companies aren’t offering a precise number, but say “tens of millions” of Verizon customers will now have access to Pluto’s hundreds of channels, a significant step in the evolution of the pay-TV bundle. Verizon has just shy of 116 million wireless customers, plus four million video subscribers on FiOS and another six million FiOS broadband customers.

With or without a pay-TV subscription, Verizon customers will be able to watch curated versions of well-known TV networks, including Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. The partners declare it as the biggest deal to date in the emerging category known as “FAST” — free, ad-supported television.

Three new co-branded channels will be made available as exclusives for Verizon subscribers: Movies on Verizon, Real Life on Verizon, and Yahoo Finance.

For ViacomCBS, which acquired Pluto in 2019, the deal also brings benefits to its overall portfolio of networks, which have important distribution relationships with Verizon. Earlier this year, the companies had reached a distribution deal for linear carriage of ViacomCBS networks.

Pluto had about 12 million monthly active users at the time it was acquired, a tally that has more than doubled since. ViacomCBS will reveal updated numbers for Pluto on its next quarterly earnings call in early August, but executives are targeting 30 million users by the end of 2020.

While streaming overall is booming, free options are seen as particularly appealing to both advertisers and cost-conscious viewers. Peacock is the latest entrant in the ad-supported streaming field, joining Crackle, Tubi, Xumo and several others. Pluto, founded in 2013, has long been known for advocating a linear, lean-back experience defined by a programming guide and live signals, an approach since emulated by Peacock, Roku, Amazon Fire and others.

Titles featured on Movies on Verizon include Arrival, Carol, Sliding Doors, The Illusionist and Donnie Darko. The “Real Life” channel will feature shows like Coast Guard Alaska/Florida/Pacific Northwest, Critical Rescue, Navy Seals: Untold Stories and Special Delivery: Baby ER.

From Media Play News:

Pluto TV Bows on Verizon Wireless, the AVOD Service’s Biggest Distribution Deal

Heralded as its biggest distribution deal to date, ViacomCBS’s ad-supported VOD platform, Pluto TV, is launching on Verizon. The deal affords the telecom’s 115 million wireless subscribers access to Pluto’s myriad channels featuring on-demand content from Paramount Pictures, MTV, CBS, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, among other sources. Starting July 24 some Verizon devices will update to add Pluto’s more than 250 original and branded channels.

The service will be available on select Fios 1100 and 4100 set-top boxes and new activations of Stream TV, in addition to Android TV set-top box. Pluto TV will be viewable on Fios channel 839. Verizon has about 4 million FiOS TV subs and 6 million FiOS broadband users.

Pluto TV will offer live and on-demand content with thousands of originals and notable content. Verizon devices will include three exclusive channels, including Movies on Verizon, Real Life on Verizon and Yahoo! Finance.

Verizon customers who access Pluto TV will have access to additional content, at no additional cost, including sports (football, soccer, winter sports), national, local and financial news; full seasons of TV shows and feature film such as Arrival, Carol, Sliding Doors, The Illusionist and Donnie Darko.

Reality programming includes “Coast Guard Alaska/Florida/Pacific Northwest,” “Critical Rescue,” “Navy Seals: Untold Stories,” and Special Delivery: Baby ER.”

Peppa Pig to Support Team GB for the Tokyo Olympics With 'Big Inspiration for Little Piggies' Campaign

‘Big Inspiration for Little Piggies’ campaign will encourage families to celebrate the Tokyo Olympics.

Hasbro has today (Thursday 23rd July 2020) unveiled a collaboration with Team GB in the UK, which will see Peppa Pig join the British Olympic team as a special children’s ambassador in time for the biggest sporting event of 2021, the Tokyo Olympics!

Hasbro’s new Big Inspiration for Little Piggies campaign has been developed to get kids moving and into the spirit of the Tokyo Olympics – which has been rescheduled from 2020 to next year due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic – by encouraging them to cheer on their favourite national athletes. The campaign will be underpinned by a busy roster of raft of live events, retail activations, digital content and bespoke merchandise.

“With a year to go until the Olympics, there couldn’t be a better time to inspire young kids and their families to get active” said Hasbro’s Marianne James, VP EMEA Consumer Products. “Our Big Inspiration for Little Piggies campaign is a great opportunity to tap into the enormous interest surrounding the Olympics. It will support the Team GB athletes and nurture a lifelong love of sports in the younger generation that will leave a lasting legacy.”

Licensing partners are in place across consumer product categories including toys, apparel and accessories, stationery, home gifting and publishing. The campaign will span multiple touchpoints with a brand-new bespoke style guide, featuring innovative new designs that put Peppa and her friends at the centre of the action. The guide will feature sporting outfits and active wear to inspire a range of Team GB licensed merchandise for children, placing the preschool brand in good company with Team GB’s official mascot, Pride The Lion.

New branded content is also being developed across digital channels that will harness the popularity of Peppa Pig and Team GB by encouraging children and families to take advantage of the global sporting event and promote an active, healthy lifestyle.

Throughout summer 2021, Hasbro will be readying a packed calendar of interactive marketing activities that will see Peppa Pig model her very own Team GB kit at various events across the country, sports-related meet-and-greets, experiential displays, retail activations and fun competitions hosted at multiple locations.

The collaboration will kick off with a digital presence in Team GB’s inspired community campaign ‘I Am Team GB’ from 23rd – 30th July, which aims to capitalise on the should-have-been Olympic buzz and fire kids enthusiasm about getting active with Peppa Pig.

For the Peppa Pig brand, the partnership extends its recently slate of collaborative campaigns. Entertainment One (eOne) teamed with VisitEngland for a tourism campaign in January.
