Miranda Cosgrove Explains Why ‘iCarly’ Co-Star Jerry Trainor Has a ‘Hideous’ Portrait of Her

Miranda Cosgrove paid an in-studio visit to The Tonight Show on Thursday (August 12) and regaled host Jimmy Fallon with anecdotes about some of the shenanigans taking place on the set of the new iCarly reboot.

Among them is a friendly rivalry with co-star Jerry Trainor, who plays her onscreen brother.

According to Cosgrove, it all began when Trainor asked if Cosgrove could “hook him up” with a spray tan, and she was happy to oblige.

Unfortunately, he didn’t get the memo that he was supposed to wash it off, and showed up the next morning at a promotional event with a bright orange face. “He looks like the colour of the [Nickelodeon] blimp,” Fallon joked.

“So he was very upset and he blamed me,” Cosgrove revealed, which all came to a head when they were filming an episode in which her character makes “a crazy, hideous face” that then forms the basis for an Andy Warhol-inspired piece of artwork.

“So he asked if he could take it home when we finished the episode, and he put it up at his house to get me back.”

Trainor, in fact, took to Instagram to share some pics of the portrait in order to have some fun at Cosgrove’s expense.

SpongeBob SquarePants Theory: The Flower Clouds Above Bikini Bottom Are Really Boat Propellers

SpongeBob SquarePants' flower clouds add lovely color to the Nickelodeon series. However, one theorist believes these flowers aren't clouds at all.

Nickelodeon / CBR.

SpongeBob SquarePants is a beloved animated series that's been airing for over two decades while putting a fun twist on undersea life. The Nickelodeon cartoon is stylized to evoke the feeling of summer vacation on an island getaway, complete with a houses that look like a giant pineapple and an Easter Island head. The series also satirizes some common ocean activities, including fishing, where SpongeBob and Patrick risk their lives swinging on fish hooks. However, one theory suggests that the flower clouds in the "sky" are another clever nod to the surface world.

The Reddit theory suggests that the flower clouds are not clouds at all but boat propellers. At first, the idea seems outlandish and a bit of a stretch, but upon closer inspection actually makes a lot of sense. For starters, each flower cloud has leaves that vary in number from three to five. Most boat propellers also have the same amount of fins. Even though the clouds don't look like propellers in the cartoon, science may have an answer for that.

The flower clouds are distorted and reflect different colors, but this could easily be explained by the light refracting the propellers and bending the shapes as a result. Its colors could also be explained as algae or the prism of light being reflected thanks to the sun. The spacing between the flowers and size also justify them being propellers because they are often spread out and incredibly huge compared to the much smaller characters in the show. Further adding evidence to this theory are a handful of episodes that showcase how the propellers are more than just flowers.

A couple of episodes feature the flower clouds as solid objects that could even be dangerous if mishandled. One example is in the episode "Karen's Virus," where Plankton's computer wife develops a virus that changes her personality. During a violent outburst, Karen throws a boat mobile at one of the flowers, causing it to fall out of the sky. The film The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water also shows flower clouds falling from the sky in greater numbers. While accidents with boat propeller malfunctions aren't common, they aren't impossible. Theoretically, it's logical that the characters interacting with the flower cloud propellers could cause them to fall off the boat and onto the ocean floor.

Possibly the best example of the theory is in the episode "SB-129," when Squidward travels through time. When trying to escape the future, he is sent too far back and ends up in the prehistoric era. Walking out, the background is a greenish-brown without a single flower cloud in sight. According to the theory, this is because boats and propellers didn't exist in this timeframe.

For now, the truth behind the flower clouds has not been confirmed. While SpongeBob SquarePants' characters also acknowledge them as flowers, it's hard to deny the subtle evidence suggesting that there's more to them than meets the eye. Considering that boats and humans have interacted with the SpongeBob universe on more than one occasion, it's entirely possible that the lovely flowers in the sky are just distorted boat propellers attached to ships. This would also justify why there were so many fish hooks for SpongeBob and Patrick to swing from. For the most part, the flower clouds are unimportant to the many stories within the series. But on the rare occasions that they play a role in the narrative, it becomes harder to discredit that they may be attached to something much larger.

From J-14:

Aside from playing [Mary Anne Spier on The Baby-Sitters Club], Malia [Baker] also got a chance to play Gabby on Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Curse of the Shadows. While the characters were different, the young star was able to transition almost seamlessly between the two — and live out a “lifelong dream of serving tables,” even if it was just in character as Gabby.

“It was so fun being able to portray two different types [of teens],” Malia explained. “I thought it was really awesome playing Gabby. She was kind of a baddie. She was out there, but she was still able to use her voice. She was strong. She was brave. She was a sarcastic. She was really witty. She had a great relationship with every single one of the characters. Overall, she was just a really goal-oriented person, focused on a future.”

She added, “I just had a really great time playing both characters, which are so different but similar at the same time.”

When Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Curse of the Shadows premiered in February 2021, Malia said it was “so cool seeing everything together,” especially the fan reactions.

“We were really tight knit group while we were on set. Off of set, we were the same way,” she gushed, noting that she and Beatrice Kitsos (who played Hanna) were besties because of their “really awesome girl moments in the show.”

Now that Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Curse of the Shadows is officially out on DVD, Malia is just excited for fans to have “a really fun time” watching the series over and over. “I’m super grateful that I got to work with [my castmates] and meet them,” the Netflix star added when reflecting on the Nickelodeon series. “I miss those guys, for real.”

Miranda Cosgrove Talks About Returning to 'iCarly' After Nearly 10 Years, What She Hopes for Season 2

iCarly is back! Nickelodeon's hit comedy made a triumph return in a brand new revival series, which made its debut on Paramount+ in June, quickly becoming one of the streaming platform's most watched shows to date. With the revival being renewed for a second season, Miranda Cosgrove recently talked to SBJCT about returning to the series, and what the actor hopes to achieve in season two.

"Recently I started the new iCarly Revival and it’s been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life, Cosgrove told SBJCT. "I didn’t fully realize how emotional it would be to come back to the show almost a decade after it ended. I really grew up making iCarly so even stepping back onto the old set and seeing it again was a crazy feeling. Being around most of my old cast mates from the original show and playing the same characters as adults has been really fun. I think it’s pushed all of us to explore new sides of the characters we play. I’m also an executive producer on the show so I get to be apart of the writing process and the edits for each episode. On the original show I was so young I didn’t have a say in anything the Carly character would say or do. I was just there to do my job the best I could and say the lines the way I was asked to say them. This time around I have a lot of creative freedom and it’s been amazing getting to express that."

Talking about what she hopes to achieve in the coming year, Cosgrove dished: "In the coming year we are going into our 2nd season of the revival, and I want to make sure it’s more exciting and even better than the first. We spent a lot of the first season setting up the new world and explaining where the characters have landed now that so much time has passed. I’m really looking forward to pushing everything further this season and having more fun now that we’ve already laid some groundwork."

Cosgrove also talked about her love for animals and how they inspire her: "I work with Kitten Rescue La to get homeless cats off the streets, get them spayed or neutered, and find them forever homes. They do amazing work and I love everything they stand for. Also Love Leo Rescue and Wags and Walks have helped me find loving homes for multiple dogs I’ve found on the streets of LA. [,,,] Animals inspire me a lot. They live in the moment and take life as it comes. They love you unconditionally. I think people could learn a lot from animals. I definitely have."

Cosgrove also revealed how a chance encounter when she was a toddler changed her life forever: "A children’s agent came up to my mom while we were at a food festival when I was 3 so I didn’t choose to pursue acting on my own. I kind of fell into it and my mom started taking me to auditions. I definitely have thought a lot about how that agent coming up to my mom that day really changed the trajectory of my entire life. I don’t know if I would’ve ended up pursuing an acting career or even a career in the entertainment business if that hadn’t happened. My dad owns a dry-cleaning business and my mom would stay with me on set when I was a kid. I feel super lucky to have the opportunities I’ve had in my life. Even though I do love acting I missed out on middle school and high school. And around 16 I started thinking about exploring other passions. I always wanted to go to college and acting and singing helped me save up enough money to be able to do that."
