CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio -- For its 10th year, Lake Erie Ink will bring more family-friendly fun to the comic convention scene from March 3-5, for its annual Kids’ Comic Con event.

Kids' Comic Con is set to take place March 3-5, 2022. (Images courtesy of Lake Erie Ink)

The convention will feature more than 20 workshops, artist conversations, panel discussions, teen afterparties and more. Events will take place both in-person at Lake Erie Ink’s headquarters (2843 Washington Blvd.) and virtually, according to a press release. All virtual events will be free to access, while a ticket to all in-person events will cost $10 for one day or $15 for both. Pre-registration is required. No walk-ins will be admitted. All tickets must be purchased before March 2.

Highlights of this year’s Kids’ Comic Con include a virtual comic workshop with artists from Nickelodeon Studios, including Jeff Sornig, a conversation with Myles Morales Shock Waves author Justin Reynolds, and a talk with Terri Libenson, Juan Fernandez and Amy Schwabauer. The event welcomes comic fans of all ages.

Events will feature New Yorker cartoonist Liz Montague, comic book writer Marc Sumerak, Vagabond Comics co-founder Sequoia Bostick, artist Gilberto Rivera, author Brad Ricca, comics artist Kate Atherton, cartoonist Matt Haberbusch, illustrator Michelle Littlejohn, manga artist Miguel Hernandez, comics scholar Valentino Zullo, illustrator Od Perry-Richardson, cartoonist Samantha Green and 50Fifty Comix.

Attendees can pre-register for the event at lakeerieink.org/kids-comic-con, and can call Lake Erie Ink at 216-320-4757 with any questions.

Kapow! Lake Erie Ink prepares for 10th annual Kids Comic Con

It’s been a decade since Lake Erie Ink first launched its Kids Comic Con—an annual event that creates a safe space for kids to express themselves creatively, let imaginations run free through writing and drawing, and have a chance to work with veteran comics authors and illustrators.

Lake Erie Ink’s signature event has grown over the past 10 years, and so has attendance, says Lake Erie Ink co-founder and executive director Amy Rosenbluth. And despite the COVID-19 pandemic putting a cramp in the usual format the past two years—working with Cleveland Public Library to stream Kids Comic Con last year, and this year offering a hybrid model with both in-person and virtual workshops—the popularity of the event has grown in popularity with kids from all over the region.

This year’s Kids Comic Con kicks off on Thursday, March 3 and runs through Saturday, March 6. Rosenbluth says she expects attendance to be strong this year. “We went from 150 kids the last couple of years, and last year had 120 kids while streaming the entire event,” she says, adding that they already have 25 kids signed up for next week’s Comic Con.

At this year’s event, participants will have the chance to attend more than 20 workshops and conversations with experienced comic creators and guest artists from across the country.

From hearing Justin Reynolds, a nationally syndicated author and writer for Myles Morales: Shock Waves (the original Spider-Man graphic novel), to working with Cleveland-based illustrator, designer, and maker Sequoia Bostick, comic lovers of all ages will have the opportunity to learn from working artists and writers that represent a wide range of styles, experience, and backgrounds

Events include a virtual comic workshop with Nickelodeon Studios on Friday, March 4 at 4 p.m. and a kickoff conversation later that evening with best-selling children’s book author and award winning “Pajama Diaries” cartoonist Terri Libenson and comics and composition teacher Juan Fernandez, hosted by local playwright Amy Schwabauer.

Other featured artists, writers, and panelists include: graphic novelist Justin Reynolds, Dylan Speeg of MesSed Comics,  new-to-Kids Comic Con 50Fifty Comix, and many others.

“The coolest thing is everyone has their own pretty unique style,” says Rosenbluth.

While last year’s all-virtual event allowed Lake Erie Ink to reach a broader audience—even attracting participants from outside of Ohio—Rosenbluth says they felt it was important to have some events in-person this year.

“We wanted to try it because we do know kids and parents who are going out,” she explains. “Kids Comic Con is the only one of its kind in the area.” The virtual events and workshops are free, while the in-person workshops and Teen After Party on Saturday, March 5 are $10 each, or $15 for both a workshop and the party. Click here for a complete schedule of events. Pre-registration is required for all events. Groups are welcome to register the virtual events.

While normally Lake Erie Ink would host about 150 people in person for Comic Con, Rosenbluth says they are limiting the number to 90 attendees this year. And medical masks (not superhero masks) will be required at all times. Both individuals and groups are welcome.

Additionally, in attending in person, lunch will not be provided, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own water bottles. There will be no Artist Alley this year, but books by guest artists will be available at Mac’s Backs Bookstore for purchase. Participants will be asked to stay with the workshops they pre-registered for to prevent larger groups gathering than necessary.

Marking the decade point of Kids Comic Con, Rosenbluth says this event is more needed than ever after the past two years.

“We feel even more passionately that this type of expression is needed, and we’re determined to continue to offer this for kids—letting them have space to imagine that things can be different,” she says. “It’s still about good fighting evil but on whole other level. With all the challenges everyone is facing, imagining a world where things are growing and positive is even more crucial.”

Plays-in-the-Park in Middlesex, NJ Presents 'The SpongeBob Musical' in July 2022

MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ – Middlesex County’s Plays-in-the-Park is returning to the stage this summer, with performances of The SpongeBob Musical, SOMETHING ROTTEN!, and A Chorus Line at the Stephen J. Capestro Theatre in Edison, part of Plays-in-the-Park’s 60th season.

“Plays in the Park is one of our most celebrated programs, and we’re thrilled to be able to present our favorite Broadway musicals once again, after COVID-19 conditions required us to produce smaller shows last year,” said Director of the Board of County Commissioners Ronald G. Rios. “With three lavish musicals in the works, the goal for this season is to come together to laugh and connect, and what better place to do that than sitting under the sunset on summer evenings enjoying Broadway-caliber shows? On behalf of the Board of County Commissioners, I would like to encourage residents to join us this season for a variety of live entertainment that will appeal to the whole family.”

“Our parks and open spaces have been a lifeline for many during the COVID-19 pandemic. And with Plays-in-the-Park returning to the stage again at Roosevelt Park in Edison this summer, there is much to celebrate this season,” said County Commissioner Charles E. Tomaro, chair of Infrastructure Management Committee. “Since opening in 1963, Middlesex County's Plays-in-the-Park has been cited for the excellence of its theatrical productions thanks to its consistent standard of quality and its appeal to all audiences. I wish to extend my gratitude to the cast, crew, and production teams for, without their hard work, none of this would be possible. In addition to enjoying the many productions planned, we encourage everyone attending these events to bring a non-perishable food item as a donation for REPLENISH.”

“Plays-in-the-Park is thrilled to bring such wonderful shows to life in this our 60th Anniversary season!  We believe this summer truly offers something for everyone,” said Plays-in-the-Park Artistic Director, Margaret Davis. “Whether it is a hilarious romp through the Renaissance with the likes of the zany Bottom brothers in Something Rotten!, or a trip down to Bikini Bottom to visit SpongeBob and his friends in The SpongeBob Musical, or the ultimate singular sensation of A Chorus Line – individuals will enjoy some exhilarating entertainment out under the stars.  We have heard from so many of you and are so grateful for your support.  We look forward to seeing you this summer at Plays-in-the-Park!”

In partnership with REPLENISH, Plays-in-the-Park will also be collecting nutritious food for residents in need throughout the season. If you would like to help, please bring a non-perishable food item when attending performances.

PLAYS-IN-THE-PARK 2022 SCHEDULE:

Something Rotten! (June 22-July 2) – Welcome to the 90’s― the 1590’s ―where brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a show that will rival the Renaissance Rockstar of the day, William Shakespeare. This star-lit, big-hit show tells the story of the Bottom brothers as they attempt to write the world’s very first musical. Nominated for 9 Tony Awards, SOMETHING ROTTEN! is a hysterical ode to musicals and an uproarious dose of pure Broadway fun. Your sides will ache from laughter!

The SpongeBob Musical (July 13-23) – Since its launch on July 17, 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants has reigned as the number one kids’ animated series on TV’s Nickelodeon, and now we can enjoy those beloved Bikini Bottom characters LIVE ON STAGE in this Tony award-winning Broadway musical.  Come play with Eugene Krabs, Patrick Star, Squidward, Sandy Cheeks, Sheldon J. Plankton and of course the eternal optimist himself, SpongeBob SquarePants as they fight to save their undersea world. And just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage!! The power of optimism really can save the world!  Don’t miss this dynamic stage musical chronicling the nautical and sometimes nonsensical adventures of your favorite Bikini Bottom buddies!

A Chorus Line (August 3-13) – Exploring the inner lives and poignant ambitions of professional Broadway gypsies, the show features one powerhouse number after another, capturing the spirit and tension of a Broadway chorus audition. Memorable musical numbers include “What I Did for Love, “One,” “I Can Do That,” “At the Ballet,” “The Music and the Mirror,” and “I Hope I Get It.” A brilliantly complex fusion of song, dance, and compellingly drama, A CHORUS LINE is instantly recognized as a classic and has been an audience favorite for decades.
