Miranda Cosgrove Responds To Allegations About ‘iCarly’ And Nickelodeon Made By Former Co-Star Jennette McCurdy

Miranda Cosgrove reacted to her former iCarly co-star Jennette McCurdy’s allegations against Nickelodeon.

In McCurdy’s new memoir, the actress claims she was “exploited” and “encouraged to drink alcohol by an intimidating figure” known as "The Creator," then offered "hush money" by Nickelodeon.

Cosgrove responded to the claims in an interview with The New York Times (via ET Canada).

“When you’re young, you’re so in your own head,” the actor said of her own experience on iCarly, which debuted in 2007. “You can’t imagine that people around you are having much harder struggles.”

Cosgrove acknowledged that McCurdy hid the disturbing off-camera incident with her comedic talents.

“You don’t expect things like that from the person in the room who’s making everyone laugh,” she said.

Meanwhile, McCurdy opens up about her friendship with Cosgrove in her new memoir, revealing her first impression of her iCarly co-star and shares why she didn't sign on to be a part of its recent reboot. The show ran for six seasons, which aired between 2007 and 2012.

After landing the role of Sam Puckett when she was 14, McCurdy was "fascinated" to learn of Cosgrove's "independence," something McCurdy wasn't accustomed to, given her abusive relationship with her now-late mom.

"She walked alone to pick up food from a different nearby restaurant each day -- alone! What’s that like? Then I’d always hear when she came walking back into the studio because she’d be playing Gwen Stefani or Avril Lavigne from her Sidekick. I knew of these artists, but Mom didn’t allow me to listen to them because she said their music might make me wanna 'do bad things,'" McCurdy, who grew up Mormon, writes of Cosgrove. "On set, Miranda said cuss words like 's**t' and 'a**,' and she took the Lord’s name in vain at least fifty times a day. Mom warned me not to get too close to Miranda because she doesn’t believe in God."

The then-teens quickly developed a friendship, mostly through AIM.

"Miranda and I spent hours talking every day on it," McCurdy recalls. "... Even though in person Miranda seemed shy and quiet, she had a distinct and hilarious personality through her written words. So many of the things she said made me laugh. Her way of observing things -- people, habits, human nature. I loved her. And I was so excited we were becoming friends."

As iCarly's success continued, so too did McCurdy and Cosgrove's friendship.

"My friendship with Miranda has been a source of camaraderie and emotional support," McCurdy writes. "I’m friends with the rest of the cast too, but my connection with Miranda is different and special. We Skype on the weekends and see movies at ArcLight after work."

When iCarly came to an end, McCurdy worried that it'd mark the end of her friendship with Cosgrove too. That fear really came into focus when the women shot their final scene together through tears.

"The reason I’m crying is that I don’t know what will become of my friendship with Miranda. We’ve gotten so close. Like sisters, but without the passive-aggression and weird tensions," McCurdy writes. "I have my judgments around female friendships being catty and petty and backstabby, but that couldn’t be further from the truth with Miranda. With Miranda, it’s always been so easy. Our friendship is pure."

McCurdy soon realized, however, that her fears were unfounded.

"There was no need to worry about context; our friendship has gotten stronger since iCarly ended," she writes. "We hang out three or four times a week. Usually one of the nights is a sleepover."

In fact, their bond remained so close that McCurdy eventually opened up to Cosgrove about her struggles with anorexia and bulimia.

"Miranda’s been very supportive. I appreciate her support but it’s also difficult at times," McCurdy writes. "Before Miranda knew about this stuff, when bulimia was my secret, I could get through the ups and downs on my own. I was the only person I had to be accountable to, the only person I would disappoint. But now that she’s in on the secret, I can tell she’s hyperaware of my eating tendencies. She’s constantly observing. I’m not just disappointing myself with my slips, but her too."

As close as the women once were, though, they did start to "drift apart" as they entered their late 20s.

"At the beginning of the decade, the people I was close to seemed like friends for life, people I could never imagine not seeing every day. But life happens. Love happens. Loss happens," McCurdy writes. "Change and growth happen at different paces for different people, and sometimes the paces just don’t line up. It’s devastating if I think too much about it, so I usually don’t."

That change in their dynamic came around the same time that an iCarly reboot was in the works. Cosgrove wanted McCurdy to jump on board, but the latter actress had expressed embarrassment about her time on the series.

On a phone call, McCurdy insisted, "Miranda, I’m not doing the reboot. There’s nothing you can say to convince me."

"She tells me she thinks the reboot could be an opportunity for all of us in the cast to 'get back out there,' maybe get some other opportunities from it," McCurdy recalls of Cosgrove.

When that tactic didn't work, Cosgrove reminded McCurdy that "it's really good money."

"But there are things more important than money. And my mental health and happiness fall under that category,'" McCurdy recalls telling her. "There’s a moment of silence. It’s one of those rare moments where I feel like I didn’t say too much, or too little. I feel like I represented myself accurately and there’s nothing I would change about the way I said it. I feel proud. We wrap up our conversation, promising to keep in touch, and hang up."

When ET spoke to Cosgrove last year, she reacted to McCurdy's decision not to reprise her role in the reboot.

"We all really wanted Jennette to be a part of the show in real life, but she's just doing other things and we're really happy for her," Cosgrove said at the time, adding that McCurdy would be welcomed onto the reboot "anytime."

The iCarly revival has addressed Sam's departure by explaining she is on the road with the biker gang, the Obliterators.

McCurdy’s memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died is out now.

Josh Peck Praises 'Incredibly Brave' Jennette McCurdy for New Memoir

Drake & Josh alum Josh Peck is showing his support for fellow former Nickelodeon star Jennette McCurdy following the release of her candid and sometimes shocking new memoir.

Peck recently spoke with Entertainment Tonight's Denny Directo, while promoting his new Netflix coming-of-age dramedy 13: The Musical, and he opened up about the iCarly actor's tell-all, I'm Glad My Mom Died.

"I just think it's incredibly brave," Peck said of the memoir. "And for her to do it in a way [where] she has this beautifully biting comedic voice and this thoughtful way of expressing her journey and her pain and her challenge."

"I just honor her in that because it takes a lot of guts," he added. "But I also know sort of the power, that when you do get vulnerable and share your story, how so many people can see themselves in it and find a little bit of a reprieve, so I'm just really proud of her."

In her new memoir, the 30-year-old former actress details the emotional and physical abuse she says she endured throughout her childhood up until her mom's 2013 death from cancer. She also reflected on her professional challenges and experiences growing up under the heat of the public spotlight.

Peck -- who wrote a memoir of his own, Happy People Are Annoying, published earlier this year -- said he related a lot to McCurdy's story of early fame.

"Navigating, sort of, growing up in the public eye, your not always afforded sort of the opportunity to stumble in a safe way that you would be if you were just having a normal kid experience," Peck explained, adding that one of the biggest issues facing young actors is a lot of "extra pressure."

Meanwhile, Peck, now 35, has grown up and navigated his way to adulthood amid fame. The actor has been married since 2017 to Paige O'Brien. The couple share a 3-year-old son, Max, and are expecting their second child.

When asked how the pair are getting ready for the new addition, Peck joked, "I think, you know, we're moving to a bigger place and so we are hardcore adulting. Like oh my, we own property!"

"It's fabulous. I mean, I always say having a kid is the one thing that’s not overrated in life. It's not overhyped," Peck added with a smile.

On top of his growing family, Peck also has a lot on his plate career-wise. Peck confirmed that he'll be returning for the second season of How I Met Your Father.

"Maybe I'll get in trouble after I leave here for confirming, but yeah," Peck said with a laugh. "Hilary [Duff] is a dream and I feel lucky to be her friend. I've known her for over 10 years and just the entire group there, all the actors, the creator, it's a beautiful time. I'm so lucky to be a part of it."

Additionally, Peck is appearing in the new Netflix dramedy 13: The Musical. The story follows a middle schooler named Evan Goldman (Eli Golden), who moves from New York City to a small town in Indiana following his parents' divorce. He is determined to throw the best bar mitzvah ever, and Peck stars as Evan's rabbi who will oversee the event.

"I love the idea that we're sort of redefining this idea of sort of a stately stoic sort of long-bearded religious leader into this kind of cool millennial rabbi who's trying to help this kid, who very clearly is going through it," Peck shared. "His parents are recently divorced he's recently uprooted his life from New York City, so there's a bit of a culture shock... And [I'm] just trying to help him throughout this process because bar mitzvahs are wonderful and weird and challenging, and I think my character really knows that."

13: The Musical -- adapted from Jason Robert Brown and Dan Elish's 2007 musical -- is streaming now on Netflix.

Questions put to the panel included what preschool content would look like in 10 and 20 years’ time; what brands can do to ride the storm of the cost of living crisis; as well as whether brands could and should lobby Government to update the school curriculum.

Audience participation added a fun element to the Q&A session with attendees urged to vote on various questions, such as ‘Should George Pig have his own series?’, by raising their Peppa/George voting cards in the air.
