'The Smurfs' Set to Return to S4C in 2025

The Smurfs is set to return to S4C, under the Welsh title Y Smyrffs, for the first time in 40 years.

The Smurfs

The Welsh-language channel secured a license to broadcast the animated series from Peyo Company. The series will be dubbed in Welsh (Cymraeg) by Cwmni Da and shown on S4C from Spring 2025.

The Smurfs animated series (2021) is currently airing worldwide on Nickelodeon, on local free-to-air channels and is available on Netflix. The series is currently in its third season, with a fourth currently in production. A new Smurfs movie produced and distributed by Paramount Pictures/Nickelodeon Animation and starring Rihanna as Smurfette has been recently announced with a July 2025 worldwide theatrical release.

Sioned Geraint, S4C’s content commissioner for children and learners, said: “It’s 40 years since Y Smyrffs were on S4C, and I’m delighted that we can re-introduce these wonderful characters to a new audience in 2025.

“It’s been a privilege to work together with Peyo Company to make this possible and to meet relatives of Pierre Culliford (Peyo), the man who created the Smurfs. It is thanks to their support for minority languages and S4C’s own ambitions that this new home for the Smurfs has been made possible, and I am very excited.”

Véronique Culliford, president of the Peyo Company and daughter of Pierre Culliford (aka Peyo), creator of the Smurfs, said: “I am very proud of this upcoming launch on S4C. The local-languages approach has always been central for us, and this new release in Welsh will be the 50th language release for our TV series! Kids and parents can already expect a lot of fun watching Y Smyrffs on S4C. Mae’r Smyrffs yn ôl! [The Smyrffs are back!]”

Blue and as tall as three apples, the Smurfs embody teamwork, loyalty, optimism, joy, humor, and respect for nature. They may not be easy to distinguish at first glance, but each Smurf has its own uniqueness and personality. The Smurfs live in a village filled with mushroom-shaped houses, hidden deep within a magical forest where few dare to venture. Making their debut in Johan and Peewit's comic book in 1958, these little blue characters created by Belgian artist Peyo (Pierre Culliford) have been spreading happiness and entertaining families worldwide for several generations.

For Nickelodeon, The Smurfs CG-animated series acquisition is overseen by Layla Lewis, Senior Vice President, Global Acquisitions and Content Partnerships and Dana Cluverius, Senior Vice President, Current Series Animation for Nickelodeon, and Jason Oliveri, Executive in Charge, Current Series Animation for Nickelodeon.

The Smurfs is a Peyo Productions and Dupuis Audiovisuel production, in co-production with KiKA, Ketnet and RTBF, with the participation of TF1 and with the participation of Wallimage (La Wallonie), of Screen Flanders, of BNPPFFF and with the support of the Tax Shelter of the Belgian Government and the participation of the CNC.

Paramount Committed To Channel 5 Amid Skydance Sale Process, Reveals UK Chief Sarah Rose

Channel 5 remains part of the Paramount “ecosystem” as the Skydance sale progresses and the network’s American owners are even “envious” of its model, according to UK chief Sarah Rose.

All Creatures Great and Small

Speaking at the VLV Conference, Rose stressed she can’t comment on the ongoing $8B sale, which should complete in the first half of next year, but posited: “Paramount is being sold to another owner and therefore Channel 5 is being sold with it, we are part of that ecosystem.” Chatter has abound since Paramount went on the block over the future of the American giant’s local international channels, which includes Australia’s Network 10 and Telefe in Argentina.

Under content boss Ben Frow, Channel 5 has nurtured a reputation for punching above its weight with hits including All Creatures Great and Small and Michael Palin in North Korea. Rose, who is also Paramount Global regional lead, said her American owners recognize this and are prepared to invest more in the network next year. Under Paramount’s decade-long ownership, she said Channel 5 has doubled its number of annual UK productions to 400.

“It has massively helped that we return profits to them and they are about to get some more,” Rose told the VLV conference. “I’m not losing sleep about being left by the wayside.”

Paramount owning linear network CBS helps with its understanding of Channel 5, Rose added, and she said Co-CEO George Cheeks and the Paramount team are “a bit envious” of what Frow and his commissioners have achieved.

“They are a little wide-eyed at how much bang for the buck we get,” she said. “They find some of our more regional focused commissions have a certain British idiosyncrasy that is of curiosity to them.”

Rose was speaking at the VLV after BBC News boss Jonathan Munro.

‘Paddington in Peru’ Moves to Valentine’s Day Release Date in the U.S.

U.S. audiences will have to wait a little longer to get their Paddington fix, as the successful film franchise’s third installment, Paddington in Peru, shifts from a Jan. 2025 release to Valentine’s Day.

Instead of debuting on Jan. 17, the family film will now bow on Feb. 14, which also happens to coincide with the President’s Day weekend. The shift positions the family film on a double holiday weekend, which means a large percentage of K-12 students will be out of school for an extended break and looking for something to do…or so the thinking goes. Paramount previously planned to release Nickelodeon Smurfs movie on this date, however, this will now open on August 1.

Paddington 3 debuted in the U.K. earlier this month and scored a record-breaking opening weekend, collecting £9.65 million ($12.4 million) — the biggest debut for a British film since 2021’s No Time to Die. The first two Paddington movies have earned in excess of $600 million globally, with the third installment aiming the franchise towards the $1 billion mark.

Based on the bestselling series of children’s stories by British author Michael Bond, Paddington in Peru sees Paddington (voiced by Ben Whishaw) receive a letter from Peru telling him that his beloved Aunt Lucy (Imelda Staunton) has inexplicably gone missing from her jungle cabin at the Home for Retired Bears. With his adopted family, the Brown’s, in tow, adventure ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected journey through the Amazon rainforest and to the mountain peaks of Peru.

In addition to Whishaw and Staunton, the returning cast includes Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Madeleine Harris and Samuel Joslin. The ensemble is rounded out by new additions like Olivia Colman, Emily Mortimer, Carla Tous and Antonio Banderas.

In a recent feature about Paddington Bear’s return to the big screen, Variety explained how Paddington 3 came to feature both the late Queen Elizabeth II and the actor who portrayed her in The Crown.

“[The royal family] were actually very happy for it to happen,” producer Rosie Alison said. “But we don’t like to make a big deal of it, because Paddington’s obviously a very modest fellow.”

Colman similarly signed on without hesitation. “Oh yeah, I mean, it’s Paddington!” she said of agreeing to play a singing, guitar-wielding and “The Sound of Music”-inspired nun who runs the “home for retired bears. “Paddington is just the best person in the whole wide world … Imagine if everyone was like Paddington, wouldn’t that be lovely?”

Dougal Wilson directed the film from a screenplay by Mark Burton and Jon Foster & James Lamont. Paul King (who helmed the first two Paddington films) developed the story with Simon Farnaby and Burton.

Studiocanal fully financed Paddington in Peru and is handling distribution in the U.K., France, Germany, Benelux, Poland, Australia and New Zealand, as well as through partners in China and Japan. Sony Pictures will distribute the film in the U.S., Canada and other key international territories including Latin America.

Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort, ‘Free Guy’ Writer Matt Lieberman Team With Paramount Animation for ‘Mighty Mouse’ Movie

Paramount Animation is enlisting some A-list talent in its long-running efforts to finally bring Mighty Mouse to the big screen.

The studio has tapped Maximum Effort Productions, Ryan Reynolds’ production company, to produce a feature adaptation of the popular cartoon as part of their first-look deal with the studio. In addition, Paramount Animation has also hired Matt Lieberman, who worked with Reynolds on the 2021 fantasy-adventure Free Guy, to pen the script.

Mighty Mouse has been around since 1942, with the pint-sized superhero making his debut in a short film entitled, “The Mouse of Tomorrow.” He’d go on to star in dozens of other shorts over the ensuing decades, as well as a Saturday morning cartoon, which was responsible for “Mighty Mouse Theme (Here I Come to Save the Day),” an earworm of an opener if ever there was one. Mighty Mouse would be reimagined and rebooted several times, but more recent efforts to bring the cuddly adventurer to screens, including one involving the team behind the Red franchise and The Meg, have faltered. Brad Butler, vice president of animated features, is overseeing the Mighty Mouse project for Paramount Animation.

In addition to Free Guy, Lieberman’s writing credits include The Christmas Chronicles and its sequel, Rumble, Scoob! and The Addams Family. Reynolds, who got his start on the Nickelodeon teen drama Fifteen (aka Hillside), scored a massive hit with last summer’s Deadpool & Wolverine and also appeared in last summer’s If for Paramount. Maximum Effort has several projects in development with Paramount including Boy Band, a comedy about a music group’s reunion; Starter Villain, an adaptation of the bestselling science-fiction novel by John Scalzi; and Eloise, a big-screen version of the beloved family book series. In February, Maximum Effort announced it was renewing its deal with Paramount through 2026.

Lieberman is represented by CAA, Lit Entertainment Group, Mortimer PR, and Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Feldman, Rogal, Shikora & Clark.

This news was first reported by Variety.
