01. The Origin Story’s Origin Story | Iconic Origins: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

'Iconic Origins: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Key Art

Before the cartoons, the toys, and the catchphrases, it started with a single sketch—just one dumb joke to make a friend laugh. Kevin Eastman drew a turtle with nunchucks. Peter Laird added a mask and attitude. Back and forth they went, one-upping each other until a bizarre, brilliant idea took shape. This is the story of that night, that drawing, and how two broke artists turned nothing into something legendary.

Before the billion-dollar empire, before the Saturday morning cartoons and pizza-shouting action figures, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were just a joke. A dumb sketch made by two broke artists with zero expectations. This is the wild, funny, and unexpectedly emotional true story of how a scrappy indie comic became a global phenomenon - and how it nearly destroyed the friendship that created it. Hosted by Ben De Almeida, this eight-part series follows the rise, reinvention, and ripple effects of a franchise that mutated far beyond anyone’s control. New episodes every Thursday starting October 9.

Leigh Anne Brodsky, Former Nickelodeon Consumer Products President, Passes Away, Aged 67

Leigh Anne Brodsky, a beloved wife, mother, sister, friend, mentor, and prominent licensing executive who once served as President of Nickelodeon Consumer Products, died peacefully on Friday, October 3, 2025, in New York City, surrounded by her husband, Greg, daughter, Allie, and son, Daniel. Her death at age 67 was due to complications from dementia.

Leigh Anne Brodsky

Leigh Anne Brodsky (nee Conyngham) grew up in Glen View, IL, and moved as a teenager to Wyckoff, NJ, with her parents and five siblings. She graduated from Holy Cross in 1978 with job offers at the WSJ and United Media. The latter, for $13K annually, set her on an award-winning career as a licensing executive, culminating in her longtime role as President of Consumer Products for Nickelodeon.

In 2011, Leigh Anne became the 36th inductee into the Licensing Industry Hall of Fame, as a visionary who helped lead the development and growth of such iconic characters as SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and Blue's Clues, and for her earlier work with Charles Schulz's Peanuts and Jim Davis' Garfield. Both of those giants preceded her into the Hall. Her many accolades include Entertainment Marketer of the Year by Ad Age in 2003.

At Lorne Michaels' Broadway Video, she developed a variety of consumer campaigns for Saturday Night Live and its film spinoff Wayne's World. She had a profound influence on her colleagues and team, and emphasized that a business deal required an "=" sign. As her career thrived, Leigh Anne's family and friends remained her priority.

Leigh Anne was often cast as the lead in her high school and college musicals, retained a lifelong love of theater and sang all the time, wherever she was. She loved spending time with "the gals," frequent family trips to Cape Cod and Woodstock, was a great cook, loved to entertain and delighted in the planning. She relished her walks with her two labs, Ella and Pippa. She met Greg in 1984 and they named their future children on their third date. They were ultimately her proudest accomplishment. She is also survived by a sister, Peggy (Don), and brothers Nick (Beth), Kevin (Liz) and Brian (Christine), as well as her son's wife, Angel, and sister- in-law, Ann. She was predeceased by a brother, Sean (Brenda).

A mass and celebration of her life will be held Thursday, October 9, 2025 at Ascension Church, 221 W 107 St at 10am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Brain Tumor Foundation (CBTF.org) where Leigh Anne was a longtime board member and DementiaSociety.org.

New Nickelodeon x Magic: The Gathering Team-Up Set To Be Announced At NYCC

First look at new Universes Beyond offering set for October 10

Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Nickelodeon and Magic: The Gathering (MTG) look set to be teaming up once again for a new Universes Beyond collaboration as a New York Comic Con panel listing for Nickelodeon x Magic: The Gathering was announced for October 10.

While the details are limited for now, the panel is set for 11 AM on Friday, October 10 in North-Room 409 and will feature three guests: Crystal Fraiser, Eric Englehard, and Stephanie Cheung. The description for the event notes it will be a first look at the next powerful team-up between the two brands:

"Get your exclusive first look at the next powerful team-up between Magic: The Gathering and Nickelodeon. It's going to be [redacted]!"

Judging by the guests appearing at this panel, many MTG players are convinced that the next big crossover between these franchises is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universes Beyond set. Not only that, but fans are convinced that this will be a full set. This is based on the guests who have been named for the panel.

Eric Englehard is a set designer for Magic: The Gathering, not a Secret Lair guy, making it much more likely that this announcement will be talking about a tentpole release. Engelhard has worked on releases such as Murders at Karlov Manor and Outlaws of Thunder Junction. Crystal Frasier is a narrative designer at Wizards of the Coast (WotC), who is also known as a TMNT fan through the franchise's toys and RPG (her Wikipedia page references a Ninja Turtles collection and says her first RPG was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness). Frasier wrote the Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft sourcebook. Stephanie Cheung, meanwhile, is a Wizards of the Coast Art Designer.

The latest Nick x MTG collab will follow the hit Secret Lair x SpongeBob SquarePants collection earlier this year, and the highly-anticipated Magic: The Gathering x Avatar: The Last Airbender set, slated for release on Friday, November 21.

NYCC is a four-day celebration of all things pop culture, comics, film, and more taking place from Thursday, October 9-Sunday, October 12 at the Javits Center in Manhattan, NY. Nickelodeon will be at the convention celebrating 20 years of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Update (10/9): As NYCC 2025 gets underway, a food truck-esque TMNT x MTG vehicle has been spotted, seemingly confirming that the next collaboration will be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which is currently slated to be released in March 2026.
