Meghan Markle's 'Archetypes' Podcast Doubles Down on 'Nick News' Story Disputed by Biographer

Meghan Markle's long-awaited new podcast appears to answer one particularly vociferous critic whose royal biography has dominated headlines in summer 2022.

The Duchess of Sussex's weekly show Archetypes dropped on Spotify on August 23 to a media fanfare, with headlines focusing on the hair-raising story of son Archie narrowly avoiding becoming caught up in a fire during a royal tour of South Africa when he was not even five months old.

However, without fanfare or direct reference, Meghan's opening show had the effect of clapping back at a biographer whose broad-ranging accusations filled news sites in July.

Tom Bower's book Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the war between the Windsors disputed a famous story about a feminist campaign Meghan purportedly launched aged 11, described her as ambitious and suggested she had pretended to be friends with tennis star Serena Williams.

Archetypes had answers for all three of those points as Meghan interviewed Williams about the negative tropes that hold women back.

Meghan Markle, seen during the 2022 Invictus Games, in The Hague, Netherlands, on April 16, 2022, described her friendship with Serena Williams (inset, together at their first meeting in 2014) in her "Archetypes" podcast. Their conversation contrasts with the account by Tom Bower (inset, right) of their relationship in his book Revenge.

Meghan starts her podcast by retelling a famous story disputed in Bower's book about letters she sent calling on Procter & Gamble to change a dish soap advert.

The anecdote was one of the stories to emerge about the duchess in the early phase of her relationship with Prince Harry, before they married.

An advert for Ivory Clear dish soap had said "women are fighting greasy pots and pans," leading boys in her school to suggest "that's where women belong. In the kitchen," the duchess said.

Meghan says she wrote to the company, as well as Hilary Clinton and others, calling for a change to the sexist wording.

Bower suggested Meghan had piggybacked on a much wider campaign, adding: "There was no evidence that her letter was even read."

He wrote: "Thomas Markle knew that thousands of American women were similarly annoyed. Many had sent protests to Procter & Gamble.

"With her father's encouragement, Meghan joined the bandwagon. She wrote to Procter & Gamble's chairman and also to Hillary Clinton, the First Lady. Like other protestors, she urged that the slogan should be changed to 'People all over America'.

"After she received no reply, Thomas wrote follow-up letters demanding that the corporation and Clinton acknowledge his daughter.

"Nothing happened. Using his contacts, Thomas arranged for Linda Ellerbee, a host on Nickelodeon, a children's TV channel run by Lucky Duck productions, to report Meghan's protest at her school.

"Seeing herself interviewed on the broadcast TV film report, accompanied by a re-enactment clip of her 'writing' to Clinton, naturally boosted Meghan's self-confidence.

"Some weeks later, Procter & Gamble bowed to the thousands of protests and changed the advertisement's strapline."

Archetypes doubled down on Meghan's account of making a difference with her letter-writing campaign and included clips from the Nick News segment, allowing viewers to hear the coverage for themselves.

Eleven-year-old Meghan can be heard saying: "So I was wondering if you would be able to change your commercial to 'people all over America.' Thank you, Meghan Markle."

The duchess added: "And would you believe it? Three months later, a new version of the ad appeared on TVs all around the country. They changed the language in the ad—from 'women' to 'people.'

"Now, I could paint this as a moment of triumph. And don't get me wrong: it was. Because I learned that my one small action could have a ripple effect far beyond me.

"But this experience was also something bigger: an awakening. To the millions of ways—big and small—that our society tries to box women in, to hold women back, to tell women who and what they should and can be."

Ambition is the main theme of Archetypes episode one, while the series as a whole is about the negative labels placed on women.

Bower has—both in his book and in interviews—characterized Meghan as ambitious.

He quotes her father Thomas Markle stating that during her acting career on Suits she began talking down to him.

Bower added: "The previously compassionate creature was becoming a woman of strong opinions and bigger ambitions. Flush with money, her sense of duty and obligation began to slip. She finally had status. She was being taken seriously."

In a July interview on Good Morning Britain promoting the book, he said: "Overall I came across with the impression of a woman who is very intelligent, very determined, very ambitious but also ruthless."

Meghan told her Archetypes podcast: "So, I don't remember ever personally feeling the negative connotation behind the word ambitious until I started dating my now husband. And um, apparently ambition is, uh… a terrible, terrible thing, for a woman that is—according to some.

"So, since I've felt the negativity behind it, it's really hard to un-feel it. I can't unsee it, either, in the millions of girls and women who make themselves smaller—so much smaller—on a regular basis."

Bower also suggested in the book that Meghan exaggerated her friendship with Williams when working on a cover interview for Vanity Fair with journalist Sam Kashner.

He wrote: "Over the next few days he called those who Meghan had recommended as her friends. Serena Williams denied she was Meghan's friend but just an acquaintance.

"She gave him an enigmatic quote: 'You've got to be who you are, Meghan. You can't hide.'"

On Archetypes, during an unrelated discussion, Williams said: "We've been friends for so long. I'm super loyal, to a fault, you know that."

Meghan replied: "Oh, I know. But do you remember when we met for the first time? I was thinking about that. Do you remember?"

The duchess then recounted a February, 2014 meeting—more than three years before the Vanity Fair cover story—in New York ahead of the Super Bowl the following day.

She said: "And I remember going, Oh, my gosh, who's Serena Williams going to talk to, you? And I look behind me, and when I turned around, you were there in front of me. We became such fast friends."

"I mean, the things people think and the things that people don't…" she continued, without direct reference to Bower. "But in our friendship when you have to see things that are mischaracterizing of me, but you experience behind closed doors the pain that I'm going through and vice versa."

You Have to Watch This Video of 11-Year-Old Meghan Markle on 'Nick News' Fighting Sexism [Updated]

Originally published: Friday, December 01, 2017.

Update (5/17): YouTube has revealed that the YouTube video 'See Meghan Markle on ‘90s Nickelodeon Show After Protesting Sexist Commercial', featuring Meghan Markle on Nick News, is the second most viewed video on the social video platform!

Original article:

Long before she starred in Suits or got engaged to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle was just an average kid—one who just so happened to appear on Nick News as part of her fight for gender equality.

If you didn't catch Markle's appearance at the 2015 UN Women conference detailing this very experience, allow me to get you up to date. When 11-year-old Markle was watching TV advertisements in class as part of a social studies assignment, she was alarmed when a commercial for dishwashing soap proudly asserted that "women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans." She was especially horrified when two boys in her class loudly proclaimed that women "belong" in the kitchen.

Not wanting kids to grow up thinking that "just mom does everything" Markle took up a letter-writing campaign to protest the ad. She wrote to Hillary Clinton, who was First Lady at the time. She wrote to Gloria Allred, the noted civil rights attorney Gloria Allred. She wrote to Procter & Gamble, the manufacturer of the soap. And she wrote to Linda Ellerbee, the host of Nickelodeon's Nick News, the longest-running kids' news show in television history

“If you see something that you don’t like or offended by on television or any other place, write letters and send them to the right people and you can really make a difference, not just for yourself but for lots of other people," Markle said at the time. And her advocacy work paid off—P&G ultimately changed the slogan for their soap to say "people over America are fighting greasy pots and pans."

Inside Edition recently obtained footage of Markle's appearance on the Nickelodeon news show from none other than Linda Ellerbee herself—and even in the '90s, Ellerbee could tell that Markle would go on to do great things.

"It was absolutely clear that this young woman was strong in her beliefs,” she told the nightly news program. “It didn’t matter that she was 11 years old. She believed in women and she believed in her own power and wasn’t afraid to reach out and say, ‘I want my power. I want my rights.'"

"Nick News" Host Linda Ellerbee Retires from Television

Original Lucky Duck Productions Press Release via Business Wire:

Linda Ellerbee Retires from Television

December 01, 2015 10:30 AM Eastern Standard Time

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Outspoken television journalist Linda Ellerbee, who spent half her career reporting the news to adults and the other half explaining the news to children, announced her retirement as of January 2016, forty-four years after her first job in journalism.

Journalist Linda Ellerbee announces her retirement from journalism.

"I'm a lucky woman," said Ellerbee. "I saw the world, met many of the world's most interesting people and was well paid to do so. Now I choose to go, and I go smiling. I've had a great time. And thank you for asking, but, no, I don't intend to mellow."

A pioneering female in broadcast news and award-winning producer, writer and anchor, Ellerbee, 71, is also a best-selling author, sought-after speaker, cancer survivor, mom, grandmother, and, as she puts it, "one more proud, loud, storytelling Texan."

Ellerbee is most known for anchoring and writing the late-night news program — and cult favorite — NBC News Overnight in the early 80s, and the children's news and documentary series Nick News with Linda Ellerbee, produced by Ellerbee's company, Lucky Duck Productions, and airing on Nickelodeon for 25 years — TV's longest running children's news show ever. Ellerbee announced she would retire after the final edition of Nick News with Linda Ellerbee: "Hello, I Must Be Going!" an hour-long retrospective of the series, scheduled to air on Nickelodeon at 8pm (CDT) on December 15, 2015.

She began in print journalism. In 1972, Ellerbee was hired as a reporter by the Dallas bureau of the Associated Press, but was fired after writing a chatty personal letter on the AP's word processors and then accidentally sending the letter out on the national newswire. "I was fired," says Ellerbee, "only because the AP lawyers told my bosses they couldn't shoot me, which they all thought was a better idea." The letter brought her to the attention of the News Director of the Houston CBS television affiliate KHOU, who told her she "wrote funny," and hired her in January 1973. Within a year, she was recruited by New York's WCBS-TV as the "hard news" reporter for its 11pm newscast.

In 1974, Ellerbee moved to NBC News, where she spent four years covering national politics before joining Lloyd Dobyns as co-anchor and writer of the weekly prime-time news magazine, Weekend. Dobyns and Ellerbee alternated closing the show, but both signed off with the phrase "And so it goes." In 1982, Ellerbee was again teamed with Dobyns (and later Bill Schechner) on NBC News Overnight, and again, the anchors ended each broadcast with a short, usually wry commentary, signing off with "And so it goes," (which later became the title of Ellerbee's first book). The show's working assumption that the audience was smart — and its trademark attention to good writing — led to Overnight being cited by the Alfred I. duPont–Columbia University Awards as "possibly the best written and most intelligent news program ever."

By 1986, despite awards and critical acclaim, Overnight had been cancelled and Ellerbee had moved to rival network ABC, where (with Ray Gandolf) she wrote and anchored Our World, a weekly primetime historical series. She won an Emmy for her writing in 1987, the same year the show was cancelled. Following that, Ellerbee and producer/director Rolfe Tessem quit ABC to start Lucky Duck Productions, a New York-based company that produced news, documentaries, specials and series for broadcast and cable.

In 1991, Lucky Duck Productions began producing the series Nick News with Linda Ellerbee for Nickelodeon. Ellerbee also wrote and anchored the series, which earned honors traditionally associated with adult programming (in 2009, Nick News made history as the first children's television program ever to win the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Network News Documentary for the show, Coming Home: "When Parents Return from War." Known for the respectful and direct way it spoke to children about important national and international issues, Nick News also collected three Peabody Awards (including one personal Peabody given to Ellerbee for her coverage of the Clinton impeachment), an Alfred I. duPont–Columbia University Award, and ten Emmys for Outstanding Children's Program of the year. In 2011, Ellerbee received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Children's Television at the annual Banff International Media Festival.

"My goal," said Ellerbee, "was never a nation of kid news junkies. I am more subversive; I wanted to grow a nation of rowdy citizens."

For 29 years, Ellerbee's work has been seen all over the television universe as Lucky Duck Productions has produced specials for ABC, CBS, HBO, PBS, Lifetime TV Network, MTV, Logo, A&E, MSNBC, SOAPnet, Animal Planet and TV Land. In 2004, Ellerbee and Lucky Duck Productions were honored with another Emmy, this time for the series, When I Was a Girl, which aired on WE: Women's Entertainment Network.

Ellerbee's first book, And So It Goes (1986), a humorous look at television news, became an instant best seller. Her second, Move On (1991), stories about being a working single mother, a child of the '60s, and a woman trying to find some balance in her life, was also a best seller — as was her third book, Take Big Bites: Adventures Around the World and Across the Table, (2005) an account of her love of travel and food and, according to Ellerbee, "oh, just making trouble in general." In her eight-part series of books for children, Get Real (2000), two middle school girls start a school newspaper and discover both journalism and life are more complicated than they imagined.

As part of the first group of women to work as TV journalists, Ellerbee, (who once said, "If men can run the world, why can't they stop wearing neckties?") had a front-row seat to gender discrimination: "Network executives would say to me, 'If you take time off for family-related matters, we'll know women aren't serious about this work.' What? You'll fire all the women in journalism if I take my kid to the dentist this afternoon?"

In 2011, at the Gracie Awards, the Alliance for Women in Media recognized Ellerbee's work with its Tribute Award, the organization's highest honor. On presenting the award, former CNN anchor Aaron Brown said to a ballroom of a thousand women, "The two most important women in the history of television news are Barbara Walters and Linda Ellerbee. Barbara Walters made it possible for you to be on television news; Linda Ellerbee made it possible for you to be you on television news."

Ellerbee says she never thought of herself a maverick. "I thought I was normal; other people were a little weird. But if not doing everything the way everybody else did makes me a maverick, what the hell? Only dead fish swim with the stream all the time."

Ellerbee is often said to have been the inspiration for the TV sitcom, Murphy Brown. (In 1989, Ellerbee guest-starred on the series as herself, and would do so twice more. The storyline in the episode, "Summer of '77," is that Ellerbee has auditioned for the anchor job which eventually goes to Murphy. Also, Murphy accuses Ellerbee of stealing her sign off, "And so it goes," from Murphy.) Regarding rumors that she was the real Murphy Brown, Ellerbee says, "I don't know if Murphy is based on me, and don't much care, but a series about a television news anchorwoman whose mouth constantly gets her into trouble? What's not to like?"

Despite winning almost every honor TV has to give, Ellerbee says the richest rewards have come from Rolfe Tessem, her partner of 30 years in life and work; Joshua Veselka, her son, who owns Eagle Pass Productions, a London-based international media company; Vanessa Veselka, her daughter, a novelist whose book, Zazen, won the 2012 Pen Prize for Best First Novel of the year; and her four grandchildren, Violet, Ruben, Gabriel and Milo, who are noisy. Ellerbee and Tessem live in New York City and Massachusetts with their two Greek rescue dogs, Daisy and Dolly.

When asked what she planned to after she retired, Ellerbee said she was thinking of becoming a shepherd.

NEW YORK – Dec. 1, 2015 – Commemorating the unrivaled run of the iconic Nick News with Linda Ellerbee, Nickelodeon will present "Hello, I Must Be Going: 25 Years of Nick News with Linda Ellerbee," a retrospective series finale documenting the longest-running kids' news show in television history. Ellerbee, who has announced her retirement, will highlight some of Nick News' most poignant episodes and discussions, while presenting the story and philosophy behind the award-winning series. The hour-long special will air Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon.

"For the past 25 years, few people have served kids better than Linda Ellerbee and her staff at Nick News," said Cyma Zarghami, President, Viacom Kids and Family Group. "She was a trailblazer in network news when she joined Nickelodeon, and she has been a pioneer ever since in her ability to respect the intelligence of our audiences and never once speak down to them."

Zarghami added, "She has helped multiple generations of kids understand the issues of the day, and she helped a lot of parents navigate how to talk about the tough topics, as well. We are deeply grateful for her immeasurable contributions to Nickelodeon, and we wish her all the best in her retirement."

Initially created as a news special to help kids understand the U.S. War with Iraq in the early 1990s, Nick News immediately went on to play a vital, continuing role in kids' education of current events, from covering major world events like 9/11, the Oklahoma City bombing and Hurricane Katrina, to shedding light on controversial issues such as AIDS, sexuality and racism.

Never fearful of tackling difficult topics, Nick News received critical acclaim for its commitment to delivering honest and imperative information to kids. Rooted in the belief that kids need and want information about the world they live in, Nick News used its unique format as a teaching tool and a platform to honor everyday heroes. In doing so, Ellerbee and her team encouraged kids to seek out information and taught them the important lesson that one person can make a difference in the world.

"Possibly the most important truth I take with me is the firm knowledge that you are never too old to learn from young," said Ellerbee. "I've been a television journalist for 43 years, and I'm pretty sure I've been the luckiest journalist on television. It's been a great ride, all of it, but it's time to go, and I go smiling."

Nick News, produced by Lucky Duck Productions, is the longest-running kids' news show in television history. It built its reputation on the respectful and direct way it speaks to kids about the important issues of the day. Over the years, Nick News received more than 21 Emmy nominations and won its tenth Emmy Award for Forgotten But Not Gone: Kids, HIV & AIDS in the category of Outstanding Children's Nonfiction Program. Its additional Emmy wins include: Under the Influence: Kids of Alcoholics (2011); (The Face of Courage: Kids Living with Cancer (2010); Coming Home: When Parents Return from War (2009); The Untouchable Kids of India (2008); Private Worlds: Kids and Autism (2007); Never Again: From the Holocaust to the Sudan (2005); Faces of Hope: The Kids of Afghanistan (2002) and What Are You Staring At? (1998). In 1995, the entire series won the Emmy.

Nick News was also honored with the Edward R. Nickelodeon USA To Premiere New "Nick News with Linda Ellerbee" Special "Before I Go...Living With Dying" On 8/23

Original Nickelodeon USA Press Release via NickPress.com:

NICKELODEON'S NICK NEWS WITH LINDA ELLERBEE PRESENTS STORIES OF KIDS WITH TERMINAL ILLNESSES IN "BEFORE I GO…LIVING WITH DYING" PREMIERING SUNDAY, AUGUST 23, AT 8 P.M. (ET/PT)

NEW YORK – Aug. 18, 2015 – Kids who are suffering from terminal illnesses share their stories and their appreciation for life in a brand-new Nick News with Linda Ellerbee special, "Before I Go…Living with Dying," premiering Sunday, August 23, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon.

In their dying, kids teach people the real meaning of courage and grace. They also serve as a reminder that they are just kids handling the hardest thing in life--leaving it. For many kids who are dying, it's clear they want to control their own lives for as long as possible.

Rhett, who's suffering from cancer says, "I made the decision to have no more treatment. Life to me is more fun and entertaining because I play with my brother and my dog outside in the warm weather...and it's more fun than just sitting there in a hospital bed dying slowly."

Nohemy, 15, from Norwalk, Calif., who was diagnosed with Stage IV brain cancer, wants some control over what happens after she dies. "For my funeral I don't want anyone to have depressing colors. I want them all to be wearing blue or white. I don't want any sad music. I'd rather have uplifting music."

"Each person is his or her own life story, and just because one person's story may be shorter than another doesn't mean it's worth less," says Ellerbee. "When kids are dying, they often teach the rest of us how to live."

As Nohemy says, "Death is a part of life and I'm trying to live every day like it's my last."

Nickelodeon USA To Premiere New "Nick News with Linda Ellerbee" Special "The Electronic Leash: Safety vs. Privacy" On 6/16

Original Nickelodeon USA Press Release via The Futon Critic:

"NICK NEWS WITH LINDA ELLERBEE" EXAMINES BOUNDARIES OF TECHNOLOGY MONITORING FOR KIDS IN "THE ELECTRONIC LEASH: SAFETY VS. PRIVACY," PREMIERING TUESDAY, JUNE 16, AT 8:00 P.M. (ET/PT) ON NICKELODEON

NEW YORK - June 11, 2015 - Nick News with Linda Ellerbee examines the boundaries of child safety and privacy, and discovers how kids and parents feel about the monitoring of technology in the brand-new special, "The Electronic Leash: Safety vs. Privacy," premiering Tuesday, June 16, at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon. Technology is ever-changing and extremely powerful, enabling kids to stay in constant contact with the world around them. As the internet and social media continue to play an integral role in the lives of kids, parents are becoming increasingly concerned about the safety of their children.

Evan, 15, from New York, N.Y. says, "Privacy is a keystone of freedom and without privacy we would lose basic human rights."

Zachare, 14, from Columbia, Mo. adds, "I think it's OK for parents to track their kids because if the kid is in a bad situation the parent can go help them."

Just because kids leave the house doesn't mean the electronic leash comes off. Beyond reading messages, parents can use GPS apps to track their children's location.

Isaiah, 14, from Columbia, Mo. says, "I didn't really like how the app knew where I was at, at all times and felt it was invading my privacy... I felt like they couldn't trust me."

Schools have also begun implementing an electronic leash. At 14-year-old Wolf's school in Columbia, Mo., everything done on the school computer is tracked. The school also monitors its students after school hours by tracking students' social media.

Wolf says, "I find their policy with social media kind of intrusive in my mind because what I do outside of school is my business."

"With the changing world of technology," Ellerbee adds, "Perhaps in the future, technology will give us ways where we won't have to make a choice between privacy and safety. But that day hasn't come yet."

Nickelodeon USA To Premiere New "Nick News with Linda Ellerbee" Special "So Close and Yet So Far Away: The Kids of Cuba" On 4/13

Original Nickelodeon USA Press Release via NickPress.com:

NICK NEWS WITH LINDA ELLERBEE GIVES A GLIMPSE INTO THE LIVES OF CUBAN KIDS IN "SO CLOSE AND YET SO FAR AWAY: THE KIDS OF CUBA" PREMIERING MONDAY, APRIL 13, ON NICKELODEON

NEW YORK – April 7, 2015 – More than 50 years after severing ties, America and Cuba recently agreed to work to improve their relationship. Nick News with Linda Ellerbee journeys to Cuba to explore what this means for the children of tomorrow and shed some light on what it's like to be a kid in Cuba today in the brand-new special, "So Close and Yet So Far Away: The Kids of Cuba," premiering Monday, April 13, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon.

"Cuba is an underdeveloped country. But it's a free country," says Darian, 15.

"For me, the most beautiful part of Cuba is the people," adds Alejandra, 15.

In 1959 Cuban rebels led by Fidel Castro overthrew Cuba's American-supported dictator. Following this, Cuba aligned itself with the communist Soviet Union. As a result, the capitalist United States cut off diplomatic relations with the island and passed a law making it illegal to do business with Cuba and in most cases, to go there. "So Close and Yet So Far Away: The Kids of Cuba" explores what happens if this situation changes.

"I would like American kids to come to Cuba, so that way I can meet them and learn about their lives," says Dunia, 14.

Alejandra, 15, adds, "They can see our country, the way we live, and they can see that a lot of the things that they are told about our country aren't true."

"I like that I can have medicine…and medical attention, without having to pay for any costs," says Ruben, 15. "But I would like to change, above all, the lack of communication due to not having Internet.

I would like for us to be able to travel to many more places."

Lessandra, 12, says, "But I would like to have peace between the two countries."

Ellerbee adds, "The main thing to remember is what happens between our countries will not happen overnight."

NICK NEWS WITH LINDA ELLERBEE JUMPS IN THE GENDER EQUALITY GAME WITH "WHAT IS TITLE IX AND WHY DO YOU CARE?" PREMIERING TUESDAY, JAN. 13, AT 8 P.M. (ET/PT) ON NICKELODEON

NEW YORK – Jan. 9, 2015 - Crystal's true passion is basketball. The 16-year-old from Murfreesboro, Tenn., is being recruited by colleges and plans to play in the WNBA, but that dream might not have been possible without a law that most kids have never heard of -- Title IX. Nick News With Linda Ellerbee covers gender equality in the brand-new half-hour special, “What is Title IX and Why Do You Care?” premiering Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon.

"I wouldn't be here without Title IX," says former U.S. Women's National soccer player and Olympic Gold medalist Mia Hamm. "I look at my life and the importance that sports and education is played every step of the way. And having those opportunities, all of that is because of Title IX."

After Title IX was passed in 1972, no school that received federal money could discriminate on the basis of gender. Since then, there has been a 1000% increase in girl's participation in high school sports, but the playing field isn't always equal.

At Westview High School in Beaverton, Ore., parents and kids noticed a lot of discrepancies between the boys' baseball and girls' softball programs. Tess, 14, who is a softball player says, "The boys' batting cages were a lot bigger than ours and they were completely enclosed and ours weren't. It was fence with plastic over it and it wasn't well insulated. It gets really cold in there."

Juan, 17, a soccer player from Austin, Texas, believes that Title IX may interfere with his dream of playing professionally. "If I were a female, I think I would have more of a chance of a Division I scholarship in Texas," he says.

Lizzie, 16, from Austin, Texas, says, "Growing up, I was really interested in science and math. And I feel like a lot of the adults in my life thought, 'maybe she'll be a teacher, maybe she'll be a writer.' Throughout my entire life, I've sort of been told that I'm not going to be a scientist or a mathematician."

"If we are to encourage all American kids to take the science and technology road, we must make certain that road is smoother for girls than it is now," says Ellerbee.

Priya, 16, from Austin, Texas, is an advocate spreading awareness of the importance of Title IX. "We kind of have seen through our work that Title IX, its power truly lies in its use by the people," she says.

"And once people know about the law, know where it can be used, then they can take it a step further and really change society with this law."

Original Nickelodeon Press Release:

KIDS GET A NEW TAKE ON EDUCATION IN NICK NEWS WITH LINDA ELLERBEE "OLD SCHOOL/NEW SCHOOL" PREMIERING TUESDAY, DEC. 16, AT 8 P.M. (ET/PT) ON NICKELODEON

NEW YORK- Dec. 12, 2014 - Kids receiving non-traditional educations share their stories in the brand-new Nick News with Linda Ellerbee half-hour special, "Old School/New School," premiering Tuesday, Dec. 16, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon. The special profiles teens around the country who attend cyber, game-focused and real-world learning schools, and are finding out what it takes to be successful.

"New schools. Old schools. Where and how you learn is never going to count as much as what you learn," says Ellerbee.

Dylan, 12, of New York says before he started classes at Quest to Learn, a school in New York City that uses games to teach almost everything, he wasn't interested in his schoolwork. "I was really zoned out. I was like reading comics in class," he says. "But now I'm not even considering touching a comic book because I'm so scared that I'm going to miss a subject."

Bella, 15, of Bemidji, Minn., goes to school at TrekNorth where kids are required to go on wilderness trips to get a diploma. "They have amazing service learning trips (as well)," she says. "Sometimes (kids) go on weeklong trips to help the homeless."

Izabel, 14, attends Durango Big Picture High School in Durango, Colo., where students spend two days a week at internships and the rest of the time working on independent projects based completely on student interests. "I wanted to come here because I didn't like sitting in the classroom listening to a lecture all day," she says. "(Here) you're creating a future that you want."

Avianna, 12, of Drexel Hill, Pa., goes to school online through Connections Academy. "I learned that actually not having a lot of kids around me makes me thrive," she says. "Now that all the distractions are removed, I'm a lot more focused."

Lea, 15, attends Diablo Valley School in Concord, Calif., where there isn't curriculum, homework, tests or grades. "I've become a lot more confident with myself," she says. "And I think the best thing about this school is that there is no pressure to be anyone other than yourself."

NICK NEWS WITH LINDA ELLERBEE PRESENTS "THE BORDER KIDS" PREMIERING TUESDAY, DEC. 2, AT 8:00 P.M. (ET/PT) ON NICKELODEON

NEW YORK - Dec. 1, 2014 - In 2014, more than twice the number of kids crossed the southern border of the U.S. from Central America and Mexico than in 2013. Nick News with Linda Ellerbee hears from some of these kids in the brand-new half-hour special, "The Border Kids," premiering Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon.

"Everyone in the U.S., or their ancestors, came here from someplace else," says Ellerbee. "We are indeed a nation of immigrants. All of us. Always have been. And we always fight about who gets to come in next. And kids always get caught in that fight."

"My country was very dangerous. There are many gangs. I couldn't leave my house," says Emily from El Salvador.

"They try to get everyone to join in order for the gang to be larger and have the control there. I didn't feel safe at home," says Eliezar, 13, from El Salvador.

The special also features American kids weighing in on the topic.

"They should be protected the same way that any of us should be protected from violence and from crime," says Katie, 14 of New Jersey.

"In some way, it's okay for them to come here because they want a better life and we should help them in some way or another," says Rebecca, 14, of Laredo, Texas. "But, in some way, I guess I feel like it's not our responsibility. It's their own country's."
