Mysticons creator Sean Jara didn't set out to tell a story about an archer and pirate who fell in love.
But when the show's studio, Nelvana, pivoted the Nickelodeon series to center four teenage girls who become heroes known as Mysticons, instead of boys, Jara swapped his nearly all-male team for more women and LGBTQ writers to ensure the story onscreen was more accurately told.
Those queer writers were responsible for building out an arc between lesbian characters Zarya Moonwolf and Kitty Boon, whom fans loved so much they even gave them a ship name — MoonBoon.
By the second season, the two were a burgeoning couple with a planned episodic kiss.
The Mysticons showrunner then sent the script, as is customary, to the show's studios, Nelvana and YTV, the network Nickelodeon, and their producing partners.
"We sent in the first draft and thought, 'How are they going to react?'" Jara told Insider. "And they weren't fighting it. We got no notes on it."
But the moment never aired.
Although Nickelodeon supported the creative decision, Jara noted, another partner expressed concerns about the storyline and its age-appropriateness for the show's young demographic. So the creative team was forced to scrap it.
Jara said he tried to convince the concerned partner "but there was no convincing. And, as a result, we were told we have to take the kiss out."
"We almost had to unravel the whole love story, but I fought for that like, 'Listen, it's too late.'"
Mysticons studio Nelvana told Insider in a statement that they "regrettably" confirm "that this decision was made during production" of season two.
"We acknowledge that broadcast television has long been confined by conservative parameters for storytellers and it is our responsibility, as producers and broadcasters, to ensure we foster an inclusive ecosystem for creative storytelling with diversity and inclusion at the forefront," the statement continued.
"Nelvana's commitment to ensure those parameters remain in the past, and create a more diverse and inclusive future has been put into action by implementing a DEI [Diversity, Equity and Inclusion] initiative to increase racial diversity in the studio and industry, with diversity mandates in place for casting, writing and music, not only with BIPOC representation, but also the 2SLGBTQ+ communities," it concluded.
Update (3/29) - The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television has announced the PAWsome news that PAW Patrol won three awards in the TV portion of the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards! In the awards, PAW Patrol fetched the trophies for "Best Animated Program or Series", "Best Sound, Animation" and "Best Original Music, Animation"! В новом контенте Nickelodeon будет сделан особый акцент на теме технологий и гаджетов. По словам Марии Косаревой, это связано с тем, что опросы Viacom показывают: современные мальчики и девочки на «ты» с технологиями и увлекаются гаджетами: у 46% ребят в России есть собственный планшет, у 54% — собственный смартфон, а 67% пользуются несколькими устройствами одновременно (по данным Viacom International Media Networks, исследование «Дети мира», 2018 г.). Mysticons Volume One is a contemporary urban fantasy about four girls from different walks of life who are transformed into the legendary Mysticons! In Arkayna, Zarya, Emerald, and Piper’s first adventure, the girls investigate evil biker twins who have been stealing and using wicked magic to keep first place in a deadly drag racing circuit, causing mayhem on the streets of Drake City. It’s up to the Mysticons to work together to save their city!
Mysticons Vol. 1 is written by writer Kate Leth (Patsy Walker aka Hellcat!), illustrated by artist Megan Levens (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and colored by colorist Marissa Louise (Wonder Woman Annual). Leth, Levens and Louise are the creative team behind Dark Horse’s witchy road-trip comic Spell on Wheels, which, like Mysticons Vol. 1, features a spellbinding cover from Jen Bartel.

The show follows a pony named Twilight Sparkle as she learns about friendship in the town of Ponyville. Each represents a different face of friendship, and Twilight discovers herself to be a key part of the magical artifacts, the "Elements of Harmony". Sean Jara, the creator and executive producer of Mysticons, has revealed the unfortunate news in a tweet that he doesn't think that Nickelodeon and YTV's popular animated series will be renewed for a third season.
Answering a fan's question about how step-siblings Arkayna and Zarya's father may not be the true king king, and that he could still be alive somewhere, Sean replied: "Exactly! Their father was married to their mother and they ruled over one kingdom. But their father perished on a quest (or did he?) and the Queen remarried. We were going to delve into that if we got more than 40 eps, but that's probably not going to happen unfortunately."
The news will come as a blow to fans who have been following the adventures of the legendary Mysticons.
In better news for the series, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment and Elevation Pictures released the first Mysticons DVD volume, containing episodes 1-6 of the series, in Canada on Tuesday, June 19, 2018. The DVD, titled "Mysticons: Volume 1 - New Heroes Rise", is available to purchase now on Amazon.ca.
Macmillan Publishers also launched a Mysticons novel series in Canada and the US on June 19, 2018, with the first two titles being the show adaptation "Quest for the Codex" and the original story "The Secret of the Fifth Mysticon". These books will also be released in the UK on Sunday 1st July 2018.
The second set, the novelization of "Prophecy of Evil" and the original story "The Stolen Magic" will be released in Canada, the US and the UK on Tuesday, August 28, 2018.
A third original novel, titled "The Diamond Curse" is scheduled to be released in Canada, the US and the UK on Tuesday, January 8, 2019. Alongside the text versions, Macmillan is also releasing audiobooks of their original stories narrated by members of the show's voice cast. Dark Horse Comics will also launch a series of graphic novels by Kate Leth and Megan Levens on Wednesday, August 15, 2018. All titles are available to order or pre-order now on Amazon.ca, Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.
Additionally, YTV in Canada will start to premiere more brand-new episodes of Mysticons from Sunday 8th July 2018!

Squishy SpongeBob Phone Case
Step 1: Using a cutout start by tracing your SpongeBob body onto the memory foam.
Step 2: With the help of an adult, carefully cut out the body, using a utility knife.
Step 3: Trace on his face and clothes onto the memory foam, with a marker.
Step 4: Paint with yellow, brown, white, blue and red.
Step 5: Cut out SpongeBob's legs, arms and nose from the memory foam and paint.
Stept 6: Once your paint is dry, with the help of an adult, hot glue your legs, arms and nose onto the body.
Step 7: With the help of an adult, hot glue the phone case on the back of the SpongeBob squishy body. Now slide your phone into the case.
Squishy Patrick Toy
Step 1: Using a cutout, start by tracing your Patrick body onto the memory foam.
Step 2: With the help of an adult, carefully cut out the body, using a utility knife.
Step 3: Trace on his face and clothes onto the memory foam, with a marker.
Step 4: Paint with pink, green, purple, red, white and black for the eyes.
Step 5: Let it dry overnight.
Squishy Krabby Patty Toy
Step 1: Using a cutout, start by tracing your burger onto the memory foam.
Step 2: With the help of an adult, carefully cut out the body, using a utility knife.
Step 3: Trace on the layers of the burger to match your stencil.
Step 4: Paint with dark brown (patty), green (lettuce), purple (onions), red (tomatoes), orange (melted cheese) and light brown (bun).
Step 5: Let it dry overnight.
