New 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Animated Content Is Years Away, According to Co-Creator

Avatar: The Last Airbender co-creator Bryan Konietzko says it will be several years before audiences see new content tied to the animated series.

It has been years since anything related to the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender was released. Following disappointing news regarding Netflix's live-action adaptation, such as the departure of co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, many fans were pleased to hear about the launch of Avatar Studios.

As exciting as that news might be, Konietzko recently warned fans that they will have to wait a little while before seeing any new content. Speaking to Rise Up Animation, the Co-Chief Creative Officer of Avatar Studios explained that it was simply because they were still building the company. "Mike and I, we're building an awesome team very slowly at Avatar Studios— small team, but we're working our way up— and it'll be years before that stuff's out— but so excited to share all that with everybody. We've got a bunch of cool stuff in the works."

While neither Konietzko or DiMartino have given any hints as to what exactly they have in store for longtime fans of the franchise, Nickelodeon did announce at least one animated film alongside other projects when Avatar Studios launched, all of which will help expand the world of Avatar. More recently, it was reported that there is more than one film in the works. Avatar Studios has multiple CG animated feature films in development with the intention of releasing them in theaters. Additionally, Nickelodeon president and CEO Bob Robbins teased the development of a new series.

It should come as no surprise to those who have followed the Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast, where Konietzko and DiMartino teasing, "We have all the ideas and ideally we're going to get to, over the years, explore all of them and get to make them, but it'll take some time. If we make all this stuff, you guys will just be podcasting for about the next 20 years or so."

Avatar: The Last Airbender debuted on Nickelodeon in 2005. The animated series centered on the titular last airbender, Aang, and his race to master the elements with the help of Katara, Sokka and Toph. All the while, the gang had to fight against the forces of the Fire Nation, led by Firelord Ozai, who was bent on conquering and destroying the remaining two nations. The series was praised for its exploration of mature themes, its refreshing fantasy world and the depth of its characters. Its success spawned a sequel series, The Legend of Korra, which followed the next incarnation of the avatar.
