BURBANK, Calif. – January 31, 2025 – Nickelodeon has selected seven emerging creatives to join its studio’s esteemed annual Writing and Artist Programs. Designed to cultivate and foster the development of emerging talent, both programs offer opportunities to voices with unique perspectives. The 2025 participants will work from the Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank.

“Nickelodeon is thrilled to welcome this year’s talented artists and storytellers to the Writing and Artist Programs, which continue to cultivate incredible voices,” said Jean Margaret Smith, Senior Vice President, Public Affairs, Nickelodeon. “Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Writing Program and the 14th year of the Artist Program, both further develop a pipeline of unique perspectives and content in the entertainment industry, a true must.”

Celebrating its historic 25th anniversary, the Writing Program has enlisted a cohort of aspiring writers to spend the year working on a robust curriculum that includes networking, executive mentorship, and tailored workshops hosted by program alumni. The group will also shadow Nickelodeon’s working writers’ rooms and gain hands-on experience while strengthening their improv and sketch comedy skills.

The Writing Program participants are:

Disha Manocha | Nickelodeon Writing Program 2025

Disha Manocha is a comedy writer from Mumbai, India, who grew up around storytelling. Inspired by her mother, a Hindi soap opera writer, her love for writing and television propelled her to move to Los Angeles, where she enrolled in graduate school at Chapman University. Manocha has also written and produced a comedy short film and has written for the Disney Television Talent Showcase. Her writing features characters who feel a little different and explores journeys navigating identity, community, and family.

Marcus Perkins | Nickelodeon Writing Program 2025

Marcus Perkins Bejarano is a Bolivian American storyteller named a “Rising Star” attorney at the largest law firm in Dallas, TX, before taking the only logical next step: quitting his job to pursue a career in comedy writing. Since obtaining an M.F.A. in Musical Theater Writing from NYU, he has co-written comedy songs featuring characters from the video game Genshin Impact that have amassed over 20 million YouTube views and 4.5 million Spotify streams to date. As a TV comedy writer, he is passionate about creating Latino characters who strive to embrace their most authentic selves, which mirrors his professional and cultural journeys.

Teddy Sevilla | Nickelodeon Writing Program 2025

Teddy Sevilla is a writer and comedian from suburban Massachusetts. Growing up in a Filipino, Irish, and Italian American family, he discovered a love of storytelling through the summer camp game “Mafia,” where he was always voted out first and thus tasked with narrating his friends’ fates. In college, he spent his days studying Evolutionary Biology and Studio Art and spent his nights writing jokes and drawing comics for multiple comedy publications on campus. He moved to Brooklyn, where he performs stand-up and works as a contributor at Clickhole and The Onion. During the pandemic, he joined TikTok, where his sketches have accumulated over 11 million likes, and his maximum attention span has dropped to 4.5 seconds.

Founded in 2011, the Artist Program creates opportunities for rising artists to cultivate an understanding of the production process and serve as a launchpad into the entertainment industry. Focused on mentorship, each artist is placed on a host production team where, over the next six months, they will work closely with a Senior Artist Mentor in addition to a Peer Mentor who has completed the same program.

The Artist Program participants are:

Wes Smith | Nickelodeon Artist Program

Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Wes Smith (Storyboard Path) developed a passion for art and animation through comics and video games. He pursued a Bachelor’s in Traditional Animation at the Savannah College of Art and Design with a minor in Sequential Art. Smith furthered his education at the School of Visual Arts, majoring in Computer Arts to master traditional and digital techniques. Now a recent graduate, he aims to create animated works that are both entertaining and inspiring for audiences of all ages. With a strong artistic foundation and technical expertise, he is ready to make his mark in the animation industry.

Lisa Bird | Nickelodeon Artist Program

Lisa Bird (CG Generalist Path) is a CG artist from picturesque Colorado. Growing up in a half-Japanese, half-American household, Bird’s sense of storytelling was shaped by watching Western cartoons and anime. While studying animation at Brigham Young University, she discovered the artistic possibilities that technology offers (as well as the technical possibilities that art offers) and fell in love with lighting. Bird loves to see various fields of animation come together to tell a story and believes that putting things in the right light can make the mundane magical.

Lauren Bird | Nickelodeon Artist Program

Lauren Bird (Visual Development Path) is a designer and illustrator from Interior Alaska. She traces her love of creating to a childhood spent scuffling in the woods and scribbling on printer paper. After years of drawing Geronimo Stilton-inspired mouse people and voraciously consuming cartoons, she brought the fire to Detroit to study Illustration at the College for Creative Studies. Her favorite artistic moments involve crayons, zaniness, and sincerity – it’s a good day when she gets to color outside the lines.

Anthony Hernandez | Nickelodeon Artist Program

Anthony Hernandez (Storyboard Path) is a Mexican American story artist from Palmdale, California. His love for stories was present throughout his life, beginning with frequent visits to the public library and expanding into the world of video games. This curiosity for narrative-driven experiences and visual storytelling ultimately led him to the captivating world of animation. Inspired by the ability to push creative boundaries and forge personal connections with audiences, Hernandez chose to pursue a career in storyboarding, where he aims to contribute to diverse and impactful stories.

Nickelodeon Welcomes Six Emerging Artists To Studio-Led Artists Program

NICKELODEON WELCOMES SIX EMERGING ARTISTS TO STUDIO-LED ARTISTS PROGRAM

Nickelodeon Welcomes Six Emerging Artists To Studio-Led Artists Program

BURBANK, Calif. – February 8, 2024 – Nickelodeon has selected six new participants to join its esteemed annual Artist Program, which is overseen by the Paramount Office of Global Inclusion. Currently in its 13th year, Nickelodeon’s Artist Program is designed to provide a launchpad for emerging talent by offering opportunities for unique voices from underrepresented backgrounds. The participants will work from the Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank.

“We are pleased to welcome the newest cohort of artists and storytellers to this year’s Nickelodeon’s Artist Program,” said Marva Smalls, Executive Vice President, Global Head of Inclusion, Paramount and Executive Vice President, Public Affairs, Nickelodeon “For over a decade, this initiative has cultivated the next generation of creatives by offering the support and tools needed for future careers across the entertainment industry. We are thrilled that many alumni from the program are placed in both full-time and freelance positions across our brands at Paramount and other media companies.”

During the six-month program, these aspiring artists will work directly on productions under the guidance of a creative mentor, participate in workshops, learn from lead artists and more across Storyboard, Visual Development, and CG Generalist tracks.

The 2024 Artist Program participants are:

Brian Duran
Brian Duran

Brian Duran (Visual Development Track) is a half-Salvadoran and half-Taiwanese visual development artist from Southern California. Growing up, he was always fascinated with art and spent most of his childhood cultivating his passion by drawing alongside his older sister. He continued his journey at Art Center College of Design, where he discovered his love for storytelling. With his work, he strives to share intimate stories inspired by his culture and personal interests in hopes of offering unique perspectives that people can resonate with.

Heather Patterson
Heather Patterson

Heather Patterson (Storyboard Track) is a Los Angeles-based creative and full-time cat aunt to two domestic shorthairs. She grew up in a household full of adopted kids, and in school, she learned how to create things - animations, video games, ads, and gourmet dormitory instant ramen (the secret, an egg). To expand her horizons, she left the humid heat of Texas for the dry heat of LA and worked for six years as an advertising art director. Patterson’s dream is to work on stories she really needed as a kid – narratives that teach kids that their uniqueness and weirdness are the best part of them.

Kelly Copeland
Kelly Copeland

Kelly Copeland (CG Generalist Track) is a CG Artist from San Antonio, Texas, who specializes in all processes of character creation for 3D Animation. She pursued her passions for art and technology in the Visualization Program at Texas A&M University, where she primarily focused on 3D modeling and rigging. Upon graduating (during the height of the pandemic), she decided to go back to school and work on a master’s degree, where she dove deeper into her understanding of all things 3D and developed new interests in look development and hair creation for characters.

Mai-Han Nguyen

Mai-Han Nguyen (Visual Development Track) is a Vietnamese American artist based in Washington, D.C, with a background in Fine Arts. As a kid, she would run to the library at recess to check out books–either Princess Fairy Tales or Horror stories and read them obsessively. Her love of the art found inside those books led her to study in Printmaking at Boston University, and ultimately, to pursue Animation after graduation. As a Visual Development artist, Mai-Han aims to design beautiful worlds tailored to the stories that occupy them.

Meibol Moran
Meibol Moran

Meibol Moran (Storyboard Track) is a proud Ecuadorian American artist and storyteller from a big immigrant family. Meibol made a name for herself in grade school as the kid who always drew all over her jeans and wrote stories instead of studying for math tests. After having her mind blown by the incredible worlds of Avatar: The Last Airbender, she chose to pursue a career in animation at Ringling College of Art & Design and graduated with honors in May of 2023. Meibol prefers drawing on appropriate canvases now, but still has the avid imagination of a kid.

Trinity Akins
Trinity Akins

Trinity Akins (Storyboard Track) hails from the lively state of Michigan. Trinity developed a deep love for cartoons from a young age, spending hours drawing and creating comic books for people to enjoy. In high school, she took charge as the epic president of the anime club. College life unfolded at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, where Trinity honed her abilities in storytelling. Fast forward to current day, Trinity has transformed into a spirited guest art teacher, not afraid of putting her students to the test! Trinity aspires to ignite creativity and imagination in others through her storyboards, inspired by the cartoons that sparked her own imaginative journey.

Previous Artists Program alums include Roger Hernandez (CG Generalist, Big Nate), Sarah Jacques (Art Director, Santiago of the Seas), Jasmine Reyes (Storyboard Revisionist, Big Nate), Anna Hill (Storyboard Artist, The Loud House), Marisa Torres (Visual Development Artist, Santiago of the Seas & Rock, Paper, Scissors), Bikram Singh (Storyboard Artist, SpongeBob SquarePants), and Katarina Perez (CG Generalist, Max and the Midknights). Nickelodeon Reveals 2023 Writing and Artist Program Participants

Nickelodeon Reveals New Writing and Artist Program Participants

Programs align with ‘Content for Change’ initiative, a commitment to foster inclusive and diverse talent while developing tools needed to launch careers

4 writers and 8 artists join the annual programs

Nickelodeon has announced that 12 new participants have been selected to join its annual Writing and Artists Programs. The long-running Writing Program enters its 23rd year, while 2023 marks the 12th year for the Artist Program. Both programs are overseen by the Paramount Office of Global Inclusion and aligned with the company’s Content for Change initiative.

“We are thrilled to welcome the new participants and future storytellers to the Nickelodeon Writing and Artist Programs,” said Marva Smalls, Paramount’s Executive Vice President, Global Head of Inclusion. “For over 20 years, this program has been a catalyst for many people in the creative community to learn and develop the tools needed to launch their careers. Programs like these continue our commitment to an inclusive talent pipeline and diverse representation within both creators and the content they produce at Paramount.”

Within the yearlong Writing Program, participants get to network with executives and show creators, gain experience with script writing and pitching story ideas, attend workshops, seminars, and classes, and work in writers’ rooms. They will be paired with and offered guidance by executives mentors, including Nickelodeon’s Mollie Freilich (Director, Current Series Animation), Leslie Wishnevski (Manager, Animation Development), and Linda Halder (Director, Live-Action Development).

The Writing Program participants are:

Paige Elson:

A writer, actor, and comedian originally from Stockton, California. While studying at Pepperdine University, she “created a web series with her fellow acting peers, wrote and performed monologues, and even created, produced, and performed in a showcase for the theater department’s Black performers. As a Black, biracial, queer woman raised by a single, white mother, she often explores themes of Blackness, biracial-ness, womanhood, identity, and unconventional families in her writing.”

Michelle Miyoko Timm:

A biracial Japanese American from Castro Valley, California, she attended Las Positas Community College, where she took an acting class “she loved so much that she dropped out at age 19 and moved to Los Angeles. Unfortunately, she discovered that she’s a terrible actress. She did, however, find a love for improv and sketch comedy and writing short films.” Timm has decided to pursue comedy writing instead and is “proudly becoming her father at the volume of her mother.”

Bryan Smith and Mayanna Berrin (“Bryanna”):

Bryan Smith and Mayanna Berrin are “what’s known in showbiz as a ‘Triple Threat’—they write together, they do stand up together, and they apply for writing programs together! The essence of their voice as a writing team comes from the beautiful, messy collision of their opposite lived experiences. Berrin found her comedic style in her loud, mixed Long Island family that sent her to improv classes before she could talk. Smith developed his need for laughter growing up as an identical twin in Colorado.”

During the six-month Artist Program, participants will learn from lead artists and practice their craft while working on an animated series in various stages of production. The Artist Program tracks include storyboard, general design, or CG generalist.

The artists are paired with artistic mentors at Nickelodeon from shows, including Transformers: EarthSpark, Max and the Midknights, The Loud House, and SpongeBob SquarePants.

The Artist Program participants are:

Chase Mack (Storyboard Track):

Chase Mack was born in Houston, Texas, “and spent his formative years drawing and immersing himself in animation and filmmaking through local art classes and clubs.” He graduated from The University of Texas at Dallas with a bachelor’s degree in Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communications with a focus in animation. “Mack continues to further his passion in storytelling so that he can inspire the next generation of artists.”

Dianna Kim (General Design Track):

Dianna Kim was born and raised in SoCal’s South Bay, spending summers at the beach or watching cartoons. As art was still just a hobby, she studied economics at UCLA and began a career in tech marketing. When she was abruptly laid off in early 2020, “Kim found joy in drawing again, and she made the big decision to pursue a career in animation. Through online classes, she found a love for creating spaces and telling stories through background art.”

Chad Bennett (Storyboard Track):

Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Bennett “loved cartoons and spent most of his childhood drawing comics and characters inspired by the shows he saw on television. Thanks to the Internet and the advent of social media, Bennett discovered making silly cartoons could be a job! He pursued a degree in animation at Columbia College Chicago, where he found a deep love for storyboarding. Bennett recently moved to Los Angeles to break into the industry, hoping to share his sense of humor and his desire for complexity and diversity in the animation world.”

Elise Fedoroff (CG Generalist Track):

Elise Fedoroff is a Los Angeles-based 3D artist who grew up with “a passion for telling stories through her art.” Fedoroff secured her love for animation in the California State Summer School for the Arts pre-college program at CalArts, after which she attended Ringling College of Art and Design. There she discovered a passion for 3D modeling and texturing, and after graduating, she put her skills to work in the toy industry.

Doyung Lee (Storyboard Track):

Doyung Lee started his storyboarding journey two years ago, learning through mentorship programs like Rise Up Animation and Story4All, as well as numerous online resources. In college, he studied engineering, where he “fed his creativity by learning various forms of printmaking, building robots, and coming up with eclectic art projects.”

Jonathan Fernandez (General Design Track):

Jonathan Fernandez is a visual development artist based in Los Angeles. “As a child, he was inspired to draw and paint because of his love for television shows and movies. In college, he jumped around different career paths but always found time to draw and paint. Fortunately, he stumbled upon a concept art painting that reignited his curiosity and redirected him to pursue animation.”

Bikram Singh (Storyboard Track):

Bikram Singh grew up in the suburbs of Sacramento, California “watching Saturday morning cartoons and anime.” His passion for animation led him to enroll in the Animation/Illustration program at San Jose State University, and there he joined the “illustrious Shrunkenheadman Club.” After graduating, he did design and animation work for various companies and organizations in the Sacramento area.

Richard Rodriguez (General Design Track):

Richard Rodriguez is a visual development artist from Southern California “with a sense of humor and lively imagination influenced by the cartoons that captivated him in his youth.” Rodriguez honed his artistic skills at ArtCenter College of Design, where he discovered the power of visual storytelling. While working in animation has been his long-time goal, “his greatest ambition is to entertain and inspire young audiences in the same way as storytellers have done for him.”

Writing Program alumni currently working at Nickelodeon include Josh Brown (Story Editor, Baby Shark’s Big Show); Angel Hobbs (Staff Writer, That Girl Lay Lay); Sarah Allan (Writer, Big Nate); and Jeff Sayers (Staff Writer, The Loud House). In addition, program alumnus writer/producer Sameer Gardezi, in collaboration with his brainchild Break the Room, works closely with NWP designing and architecting innovative curricula for the workshops and writers’ room exercises.

Artist Program alumni include Roger Hernandez (CG Generalist, Big Nate); Dominique Evans (Visual Development Artist, Transformers: EarthSpark); Sarah Jacques (Art Director, Santiago of the Seas); Jasmine Reyes (Storyboard Revisionist, Big Nate); Anna Hill (Storyboard Artist, The Loud House); Carl Edward Mongan (Storyboard Revisionist, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years); Marisa Torres (Visual Development Artist, Santiago of the Seas & Rock, Paper, Scissors); and Jake Kim (Storyboard Revisionist, Shimmer & Shine). Outside of Nickelodeon, alumni of both Programs have gone on to create shows and hold staff positions at every major studio and network.

For more information on the Nickelodeon Writing Program, visit @NickWriting on Twitter and @NickWritingProgram on Instagram and www.nickwriting.com, or @nick_artists on Instagram and www.nickartist.com for the Artist Program. The next submission period opens July 1 for both Programs.

Nickelodeon Selects 10 Participants for Annual Writing and Artist Programs

Nickelodeon Selects 10 Participants for Annual Writing and Artist Programs

2022 Program Expands to Include an Additional Artist; Introduces Peer Mentoring Facet of Curriculum

Last Year’s Program Garnered 100% Staffing Success Rate Across Nickelodeon and ViacomCBS Productions

BURBANK, Calif.--Feb. 11, 2022--Nickelodeon has identified 10 participants for its annual Writing and Artist Programs, designed to develop the next generation of creative voices from underrepresented communities. Helmed by the ViacomCBS Office of Global Inclusion and aligned with the company’s Content for Change initiative, for its 22nd annual Writing Program, four aspiring television writers will have the opportunity to hone their skills while working at the Nickelodeon studio and six emerging artists will develop their craft during the 10th annual Artist Program.

The news comes on the heels of the second year of remote programming, which marked the most successful year ever for Nickelodeon’s Creative Talent Development & Outreach team. All five artists from the 2021 Artist Program were staffed on Nickelodeon productions and all four writers were staffed on projects across ViacomCBS.

“Nickelodeon’s long-running Writing and Artist Programs continue to provide aspiring creative minds with the tools to help launch their careers and deliver inclusive stories that reflect the voices of our diverse audiences,” said Marva Smalls, Executive Vice President, Global Head of Inclusion, ViacomCBS and Executive Vice President, Public Affairs, Kids & Family Entertainment Brands, ViacomCBS Media Networks. “Aligned with ViacomCBS’ Content for Change initiative, these programs also affirm our commitment to ensuring an equitable and inclusive pipeline that removes barriers to entry for underrepresented storytellers and continues our work to change the face of content creation.”

This year’s addition of Peer Mentoring strengthens the program’s overall impact, providing participants with invaluable one-on-one mentorship, as well as a deeper introduction to Nickelodeon’s culture and inclusive work environment.

Within the Writing Program, all participants have the opportunity to network with executives and show creators, gain firsthand experience writing scripts, pitch story ideas, and attend workshops, seminars, classes and experience working writers’ rooms. These writers will develop their skills with hands-on work during the yearlong program.

The writers will be individually paired with Nickelodeon’s Linda Halder (Senior Manager, Live Action Development), Mary Harrington (Executive Producer, Preschool Development), and Conrad Montgomery (VP, Animation Development), who will work with them on professional development, writing and network building at the studio.

The Writing Program participants are:

  • Kobie Scott: Born and raised in the Big Peach State of Georgia, Kobie Scott was always connected to animation. He was accepted into Georgia Southern University, planning to be a staff writer in the video game industry, but quickly realized TV writing was more his speed. He bought books about scriptwriting and story structure, and took animation classes that gave him a greater understanding of the art form and possibly carpal tunnel.
  • Lauren Monroe: Lauren Monroe (she/her) is a fat, queer, neurodiverse writer who grew up in Atlanta with a nerdy mom who cosplayed at conventions, taught high school English, and instilled a love of fantasy storytelling. Now Monroe happily writes colorful fantasy worlds for kids with queerness and nuanced perspectives of diverse bodies and brains.
  • Hannah Suria: Hannah Suria is a writer and performer from Orange County, Calif. and the proud daughter of immigrants (a mixed mom from Singapore and a Tamil-Sri Lankan father from Malaysia). Writing stopped being a hobby and became an integral part of her life when, as an aspiring actor, Suria quickly discovered roles for women who look like her were few and far between.
  • Frank Paiva: Frank Paiva (he/they) is a gay and queer person of size from Seattle. Growing up in the early 2000s, they struggled to find a blueprint for the rest of their life in popular media. Newly based in Los Angeles, Paiva writes comedies with heart, with a particular interest in LGBTQ history and expanding the range of body types audiences see onscreen.

During the six-month Artist Program, aspiring artists will learn from lead artists and practice their craft as they work on an animated series in various stages of production. The Artist Program tracks include storyboard, general design or CG generalist. The CG track was first offered last year to service many of the Nickelodeon Animation Studio’s current and upcoming CG productions.

The artists are paired with artistic mentors at Nickelodeon to guide their production experience, including: Ashley Kliment (Art Director, The Loud House); Jeff Chozon (Art Director, Transformers) and Jermaine Jose (Art Director, Transformers); Kimberly Mills (Storyboard Director, Big Nate) and Vypac Voeur (Lead CG Generalist, Big Nate); Chris Graham (Supervising Director, Santiago of the Seas); and Sica Von Medicus (CG Supervisor, Max & The Midknights).

The Artist Program participants are:

  • Cherrie Wang (Storyboard Track): Cherrie Wang has spent her entire life doodling on anything she could get her hands on. Her family didn’t understand the world of art and animation, so Wang attended the University of Southern California where she earned her degree in Computer Science and Engineering. She taught herself how to storyboard via the internet and recently moved back to Los Angeles to pursue her calling full-time.
  • Katarina Perez (CG Track): Katarina Perez is a Mexican-American artist born and raised in Houston, Texas. When introduced to a 3D animation course in high school, she was enamored by all that you could do in a 3-dimensional space. This propelled her to pack up and move to Dallas to pursue a Bachelor of Animation at the University of Texas at Dallas.
  • Roger Hernandez (CG Generalist Track): Born in the Greater Los Angeles area to immigrant parents from El Salvador, Roger Hernandez’s parents were always a pillar of support and despite limited resources, they got him through college where he pursued his dream in CG animation at Cal State Northridge. Though truly a CG generalist, his primary focus is CG modeling. Sculpting 3D models is his passion and it is his goal to share his vision and talent through his art.
  • Emily Monjaraz (General Design Track): Emily Monjaraz started her career illustrating kids’ books and doing graphic design for toy companies that encourage girls to pursue careers in STEM. Her mission is to create content for children learning how to harness their differences into super-powers as well as create stories and characters that represent the world in which she grew up.
  • Booker Jackson (Storyboard Track): Booker Jackson is from Sacramento, Calif. and was captivated by animation from a young age after seeing a fun Nickelodeon behind the scenes segment about a day in the life of a story artist. Jackson is passionate about diversifying the world of animation and mentoring those who will come after him.
  • David Lu (General Design Track): David Lu hails from Vancouver, Canada, where he spent his formative years watching a variety of cartoons that influenced him into becoming an artist. Convinced by his family that art was not a feasible career, Lu went to the Bay Area to write code in exchange for cold hard cash. However, Lu's artistic desires were not satisfied, so for the past couple of years he has been focused on building his portfolio to break into the animation industry and live his childhood dream of creating cartoons.

Alumni of the programs who have gone on to hold positions on Nickelodeon shows include May Chan (co-executive producer, The Astronauts), Sarah Jacques (Art Director, Santiago of the Seas), Anna Hill (storyboard artist, The Loud House), Ahn Bui (BG Painter, Middlemost Post), Samuel Pagán (CG Generalist, Rugrats), Carl Edward Mongan (Storyboard Revisionist, Kamp Koral), Angel Hobbs (Staff Writer, That Girl Lay Lay) Marisa Torres (Background Painter, Santiago of the Seas), Jonathan Butler and Gabriel Garza (co-creators, Bella and the Bulldogs) and more. Outside of Nickelodeon, many program alumni have gone on to freelance and staff positions at various networks, including Showtime, HBO, DreamWorks, Netflix, Comedy Central, Disney Channel, Disney+, Kids’ WB!, ABC, FOX, PBS, Cartoon Network, and the CW.

For more information on the Nickelodeon Writing Program, visit @NickWriting on Twitter and @NickWritingProgram on Instagram and www.nickwriting.com, or @nick_artists on Instagram and www.nickartist.com for the Artist Program. The next submission period opens July 1st and runs through August 1st.

Katarina Perez (CG Generalist Track): Katarina Perez is a Mexican-American artist born and raised in Houston, Texas. As a kid, she dreamed of one day being a 2D animator, and during her time in high school, she filled her time with painting, sketchbooks, and playing music. When introduced to a 3D animation course in high school, she was enamored by all that you could do in a 3-dimensional space. This propelled her to pack up and move to Dallas to pursue a Bachelor of Animation at the University of Texas at Dallas. Even when working full-time to support her avid camping habit, Perez always finds time to give back to the community. She is excited to join the Nick Artist Program to push herself and her skills further, make meaningful connections and, of course, spend some time to explore the hiking trails of Los Angeles.

Roger Hernandez (CG Generalist Track): Roger Hernandez discovered that his passion for animation would be his calling the moment he watched Jurassic Park at a very young age. While he had always enjoyed special effects movies, the leap from Ray Harryhausen clay creatures to CGI breathing dinosaurs was a sight to behold for him. Born in the Greater Los Angeles area to immigrant parents from El Salvador, his parents were always a pillar of support and despite limited resources, they got him through college where he pursued his dream in CG animation at Cal State Northridge. Though truly a CG generalist, his primary focus is CG modeling. Sculpting 3D models is his passion and it is his goal to share his vision and talent through his art.

Booker Jackson (Storyboard Track): Booker Jackson is from Sacramento, Calif. and was captivated by animation from a young age. He found joy in drawing his favorite characters he’d seen on screen or creating original characters in his own stories hoping to inspire and delight his family and friends. Jackson’s drive to work in animation started early on after seeing a fun Nickelodeon behind the scenes segment about a day in the life of a story artist. Day after day, he began to study diligently while watching his favorite cartoons, dreaming of one day telling his own stories to the world. Jackson is passionate about diversifying the world of animation and mentoring those who will come after him.

Cherrie Wang (Storyboard Track): Cherrie Wang has spent her entire life doodling on anything she could get her hands on, as well as gobbling up shows, cartoons and movies. Her family valued scientific sensibilities over silly drawings and didn’t understand the world of art and animation, so she struggled her way through more supplemental math and physics classes than you can imagine. Wang graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in Computer Science and Engineering and launched a career in the tech industry. She developed data visualizations for NASA, led projects on Google Maps and YouTube VR, all the while dreaming of drawing. For the last two years, she lived and worked in Tokyo, Japan, where she taught herself how to storyboard via the internet and recently moved back to Los Angeles to pursue her calling full-time.

Emily Monjaraz (General Design Track): Emily Monjaraz started her career illustrating kids’ books and doing graphic design for toy companies that encourage girls to pursue careers in STEM. In 2017, she started designing for political orgs that help recruit, train, and elect women to office. All the while nurturing her passion for character design, she worked diligently on her character design portfolio with a focus on stories and characters that represent the world in which she grew up. Her mission is to create content for children learning how to harness their differences into super-powers.  She’s super grateful for the opportunity to learn from the team at Nick.

David Lu (General Design Track): David Lu hails from Vancouver, Canada, where he spent his formative years watching a variety of cartoons that influenced him into becoming an artist. Convinced by his family that art was not a feasible career, Lu went to the Bay Area to write code in exchange for cold hard cash. David was lucky enough to be placed onto the Google Doodles team, and he has been programming the Doodles on the frontpage ever since. However, Lu's artistic desires were not satisfied, so for the past couple of years he has been focused on building his portfolio to break into the animation industry and live his childhood dream of creating cartoons.

2022 Writers in Residence

HANNAH SURIA: Hannah Suria is a writer and performer from Orange County, California but don’t hold that against her. She is the proud daughter of immigrants (a mixed mom from Singapore and a Tamil-Sri Lankan father from Malaysia) and the oldest of three siblings. While she begged for sisters, growing up with two younger brothers was like having a built-in audience and she credits them with teaching her how to be funny and make people laugh. Previously an aspiring actor, she was quick to discover roles for women who looked like her were few and far between, so she began to write. From entering writing competitions, film festivals, play festivals, ghost-writing for others, and tackling sketch comedy, writing stopped being a hobby and became an integral part of her life.

KOBIE SCOTT: Born and raised in the Big Peach State of Georgia, Kobie Scott was always connected to animation. At an early age, he was cleverly bribed by his parents: The better he did in school, the more cartoons he could watch. This love for cartoons and entertainment continued into college where he decided his career would be what most teenage boys were good at…video games! He was accepted into GA Southern University, planning to be a staff writer in the Video Game industry, but quickly realized TV writing was more his speed. He bought books about scriptwriting and story structure, and took animation classes that gave him a greater understanding of the artform and possibly carpal tunnel. Kobie graduated with a major in Writing & Linguistics, and an Animation minor.

LAUREN MONROE: Lauren Monroe (she/her) is a fat, queer, neurodiverse writer who grew up in Atlanta with a nerdy mom who cosplayed at conventions, taught high school English, and instilled a love of fantasy storytelling. She originally got a degree in English because she loved stories and reading books, but when the literary canon bored her so badly that she started writing academic essays about Avatar: The Last Airbender, she realized she wanted to write cartoons instead of papers.  Now Lauren happily writes colorful fantasy worlds for kids with queerness and nuanced perspectives of diverse bodies and brains. Lauren has always loved animation for its unique ability to make her laugh and feel less alone at the same time.

FRANK PAIVA: Frank Paiva (he/they) is a gay and queer person of size from Seattle. Growing up in the early 2000s, they struggled to find a blueprint for the rest of their life in popular media. When Frank’s essay about these struggles was published as a Modern Love column in The New York Times at age 18, they realized the power and the joy of telling their own story. Frank has written and performed at some of New York City’s most beautiful theaters and grungiest dives. Along the way, they spent nine years as an entertainment journalist and five years as a tour guide. They have been to the Statue of Liberty 200 times. Newly based in Los Angeles, Frank writes comedies with heart, with a particular interest in LGBTQ history and expanding the range of body types audiences see onscreen.
