Campaign: Nickelodeon Community Efforts

On April 25, during the Month of the Military Child, the Paramount Veterans Network teamed up with the Nickelodeon Community Efforts team to host another virtual Let’s Draw event for the Wounded Warrior Project and their families, this time with their favorite Nick artist and Marine Corps veteran, Jeff Sornig.

Jeff Sornig guided the kids through drawing their favorite Nickelodeon characters, including SpongeBob. To kick things off, we aired a short episode of SpongeBob SquarePants featuring the song “Best Day Ever.” One child even chimed in, saying April 25th really was the best day ever, especially because he didn’t have to wear a jacket (Sunny Day!), which drew laughter from everyone. The day wrapped up with the kids proudly sharing their amazing drawings. As a parting gift, Jeff created a custom coloring page just for them, which was sent out after the event.

“This event was pure joy. The kids didn’t just draw their favorite Nickelodeon characters, they owned it! What really struck me, though, was how engaged the families were when Jeff shared his journey from the Marine Corps to becoming a Nickelodeon artist. You could see how much it meant to them to connect with someone who shares the same background and is now living their dream, doing something so fun and creative. The smiles, the laughs, the connection, and the inspiration shared at the event reminded us why we do what we do. Huge thanks to WWP, NiCE, and the always-inspiring Jeff for making it truly unforgettable… "and the Best Day Ever!” said Betty Diaz, Paramount Veterans Network.

Nickelodeon Welcomes Six Emerging Artists To Studio-Led Artists Program

NICKELODEON WELCOMES SIX EMERGING ARTISTS TO STUDIO-LED ARTISTS PROGRAM

Nickelodeon Welcomes Six Emerging Artists To Studio-Led Artists Program

BURBANK, Calif. – February 8, 2024 – Nickelodeon has selected six new participants to join its esteemed annual Artist Program, which is overseen by the Paramount Office of Global Inclusion. Currently in its 13th year, Nickelodeon’s Artist Program is designed to provide a launchpad for emerging talent by offering opportunities for unique voices from underrepresented backgrounds. The participants will work from the Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank.

“We are pleased to welcome the newest cohort of artists and storytellers to this year’s Nickelodeon’s Artist Program,” said Marva Smalls, Executive Vice President, Global Head of Inclusion, Paramount and Executive Vice President, Public Affairs, Nickelodeon “For over a decade, this initiative has cultivated the next generation of creatives by offering the support and tools needed for future careers across the entertainment industry. We are thrilled that many alumni from the program are placed in both full-time and freelance positions across our brands at Paramount and other media companies.”

During the six-month program, these aspiring artists will work directly on productions under the guidance of a creative mentor, participate in workshops, learn from lead artists and more across Storyboard, Visual Development, and CG Generalist tracks.

The 2024 Artist Program participants are:

Brian Duran
Brian Duran

Brian Duran (Visual Development Track) is a half-Salvadoran and half-Taiwanese visual development artist from Southern California. Growing up, he was always fascinated with art and spent most of his childhood cultivating his passion by drawing alongside his older sister. He continued his journey at Art Center College of Design, where he discovered his love for storytelling. With his work, he strives to share intimate stories inspired by his culture and personal interests in hopes of offering unique perspectives that people can resonate with.

Heather Patterson
Heather Patterson

Heather Patterson (Storyboard Track) is a Los Angeles-based creative and full-time cat aunt to two domestic shorthairs. She grew up in a household full of adopted kids, and in school, she learned how to create things - animations, video games, ads, and gourmet dormitory instant ramen (the secret, an egg). To expand her horizons, she left the humid heat of Texas for the dry heat of LA and worked for six years as an advertising art director. Patterson’s dream is to work on stories she really needed as a kid – narratives that teach kids that their uniqueness and weirdness are the best part of them.

Kelly Copeland
Kelly Copeland

Kelly Copeland (CG Generalist Track) is a CG Artist from San Antonio, Texas, who specializes in all processes of character creation for 3D Animation. She pursued her passions for art and technology in the Visualization Program at Texas A&M University, where she primarily focused on 3D modeling and rigging. Upon graduating (during the height of the pandemic), she decided to go back to school and work on a master’s degree, where she dove deeper into her understanding of all things 3D and developed new interests in look development and hair creation for characters.

Mai-Han Nguyen

Mai-Han Nguyen (Visual Development Track) is a Vietnamese American artist based in Washington, D.C, with a background in Fine Arts. As a kid, she would run to the library at recess to check out books–either Princess Fairy Tales or Horror stories and read them obsessively. Her love of the art found inside those books led her to study in Printmaking at Boston University, and ultimately, to pursue Animation after graduation. As a Visual Development artist, Mai-Han aims to design beautiful worlds tailored to the stories that occupy them.

Meibol Moran
Meibol Moran

Meibol Moran (Storyboard Track) is a proud Ecuadorian American artist and storyteller from a big immigrant family. Meibol made a name for herself in grade school as the kid who always drew all over her jeans and wrote stories instead of studying for math tests. After having her mind blown by the incredible worlds of Avatar: The Last Airbender, she chose to pursue a career in animation at Ringling College of Art & Design and graduated with honors in May of 2023. Meibol prefers drawing on appropriate canvases now, but still has the avid imagination of a kid.

Trinity Akins
Trinity Akins

Trinity Akins (Storyboard Track) hails from the lively state of Michigan. Trinity developed a deep love for cartoons from a young age, spending hours drawing and creating comic books for people to enjoy. In high school, she took charge as the epic president of the anime club. College life unfolded at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, where Trinity honed her abilities in storytelling. Fast forward to current day, Trinity has transformed into a spirited guest art teacher, not afraid of putting her students to the test! Trinity aspires to ignite creativity and imagination in others through her storyboards, inspired by the cartoons that sparked her own imaginative journey.

Previous Artists Program alums include Roger Hernandez (CG Generalist, Big Nate), Sarah Jacques (Art Director, Santiago of the Seas), Jasmine Reyes (Storyboard Revisionist, Big Nate), Anna Hill (Storyboard Artist, The Loud House), Marisa Torres (Visual Development Artist, Santiago of the Seas & Rock, Paper, Scissors), Bikram Singh (Storyboard Artist, SpongeBob SquarePants), and Katarina Perez (CG Generalist, Max and the Midknights). Outside of Nickelodeon, program alumni have also gone on to work freelance and staff positions on productions for various networks, including CBS, DreamWorks, Netflix, Disney Channel, Disney Jr., Hulu, and Cartoon Network.

Winnipeg Animation Students Seize 'Once-in-a-Lifetime' Opportunity to Pitch Their Work to Nickelodeon

12 students of Sisler program head to L.A. for 3-day trip to visit studios, pitch projects

Two students sit in their classroom going over their work and laughing.
Mikhylla Dilag and Mary-Anne Guiboche are two students out of 12 who will be going to L.A. to pitch their projects to producers at Nickelodeon next week. (Prabhjot Singh Lotey/CBC)

Two pirates named Coco and Keg could be the newest animated characters entertaining and teaching young kids if a group of Winnipeggers have their way.

The tale of Coco and Keg — who teach kids about marine and tropical life on a remote island — is one of three stories a group of animation students will be pitching next week in Los Angeles to producers at Nickelodeon, the creators of popular shows like SpongeBob SquarePants and Rugrats.

"When I first heard about it, I actually started crying because I was so excited," Mary-Anne Guiboche, one of the students going on this trip of a lifetime, told CBC.

Guiboche, who's Métis, helped create the pirate series Heave-Ho Coco for children aged five to 12.

"Coco is really funny, his head is detachable," says Guiboche. "As for Keg, he's very grumpy, but I do love his character design and I just love drawing them out."

Guiboche said she was happy to gain more experience in the field of animation through the Orange Tree Project.

She was one of 12 high school graduates who came back for the Orange Tree Project, a post-high school program founded in 2020. The year-long program includes teachers from Sisler High School, studios of the school's Create program and mentors from Nickelodeon who help students develop short films and series.

Now the group is off to L.A. May 25-28 to pitch their two animated cartoon series and short film to Nickelodeon.

From concept to creation

The Orange Tree Project students started off in pre-production in September, refining their story ideas and creating first sketches. The program, which aims to build skills in graphic design, digital media and motion picture arts, teaches students to create a series bible, characters, story arc and pitch deck.

Now they're close to being done with an almost 50-page bible that outlines their entire series.

Before joining the program, Guiboche was unsure about how she was going to get into the animation field.

"I was just really happy about that because it meant I could focus on like just drawing and doing something that I love," said Guiboche.

The other animated series being pitched, called Hero's Ernie, is about a boy named Ernie whose peaceful life is disturbed by a wizard named Mento who wants to make Ernie the greatest hero of all time.

Inspired by cartoons

Mikhylla Dilag started learning about animation in Grade 9. Cartoons she'd watched as a young girl inspired her to sketch, she says.

After she finished her first animation classes, she felt like she wanted to do it forever, and joined the Orange Tree Project to refine and enhance her skills as an artist. She was shocked when she first heard they were going to L.A.

"It's like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. So I feel pretty honoured to be going on the trip with a lot of my classmates," she said.

During the students' three-day trip they will also be touring studios at Disney and Sony.

"I want to see the inner workings of studios, see how production looks like, how objects and made, what projects are being made right now," Dilag said.

Dilag is a part of the group making a short film called Long Exposure, a story about two friends whose relationship is tested after graduation.

Each student had a hand in every single step of the project she says, from pitching to storyboarding, music and the animation.

Dilag looks also forward to meeting the many mentors they've been working with all year long, including Carson Smith and Arnon Manor, who were both instrumental in sustaining the project's momentum.

"Their feedback did resolve a lot of the issues that we were facing," she said. "It really helps us to grow as artists and storytellers."

Program growing each year

Jaimie Leduc teaches animation at Sisler High school, and is the department head of the Create program. As a teacher for almost 13 years, he's noticed the rise in interest in interactive media.

He says the Nickelodeon partnership launched in 2020 thanks to a lot of hard work from a lot of great people, and the trip is funded by the Schroeder Foundation.

"The goal was to eventually start connecting students to like local industries and ... for them to realize that there's actually jobs in the arts," says Leduc.

One of his favourite parts of this work is watching the students grow and develop knowledge.

"The mentors provide a lot of guidance, but also provide challenges for the students to think outside the box and and really make stories their own," said Leduc.

While this is great opportunity for the students, Leduc says the collaboration works both ways as the students give Nickelodeon insight into the audience for their products too.

"I'm just so happy that students are really excited about animating here in Manitoba and Winnipeg and and telling those stories," said Leduc.

The Orange Tree Project students will be also presenting their work locally on June 22 at the Winnipeg Art Gallery

Winnipeg Students to Showcase Films Made with the Help of Nickelodeon Studios

WINNIPEG -- Despite a pandemic-disrupted academic year, a group of animation students at Sisler High School managed to create three animated short films, and now the students are ready to present their work to the world!

“Having that experience with my group, who have become my friends now, it’s amazing,” Dairyl Mabunga, a Sisler student part of The Orange Tree project, a collaboration between the Sisler CREATE program and Nickelodeon Studios, told CTV News.

“I can’t wait for everyone to see the film,” she said.

The Orange Tree Project, in its first year, is made up of high school and post-high school students with the Sisler CREATE program working with animation mentors from Nickelodeon Studios to create original animated short films.

The students were organized into three separate teams (Monarch Martians, Yam Jam Animation, Eclipse) that functioned almost like small-scale animation studios.

Each group was paired with one or more mentors from Nickelodeon who helped the students craft their films from concept to finished product.

Sisler High School Partners with Nickelodeon for Animation Project

Winnipeg, Canada - A Sisler High School student could be the brains behind the next SpongeBob SquarePants or Rugrats.

Nickelodeon Community Efforts (NICE) has partnered with Sisler's CREATE program to prepare students for potential careers in story development, content creation, animation and art.

Dubbed the Orange Tree Project, the exciting endeavor officially launched on Sept. 28. It sees Sisler students connecting with Nickelodeon mentors to create and collaborate on three two-minute animated stories.

CREATE department head Jamie Leduc said the partnership began at the beginning of 2020, when he started communicating with Nickelodeon director of community outreach Carson Smith.

"We try to connect our students to studios and industry as much as possible," Leduc said. "We did a couple master classes with Nickelodeon and we started discussing the idea of doing a yearlong mentorship project for our students."

"We have three different teams working on animated shorts and each team is being mentored by a different Nickelodeon animator or artist."

The team are mostly made up of post-high CREATE students, but a few Grade 10, 11 and 12 students are also involved.

The three Nickelodeon mentors are American storyboard artist Mark Galez (Craig of the Creek, Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie) and Canadian animators Kyle Marshall and Jessica Borutski, directors on Nickelodeon's hit TV series The Loud House.

The Nickelodeon staff members will provide ongoing mentorship to the Sisler students, sharing their experience in the areas of storyboarding, character design, animation, directing and producing. The animated stories are expected to be completed by the end of May, 2021.

The first task for the three teams is to write stories based on a theme of "change or transformation."

"My plan is to get into a call with my teammates and ask them some personal experiences they've had that they don't mind sharing," said Gab Reyes, a post-high student who is leading one of the teams.

"Nickelodeon live-streamed a story workshop last week and one thing I learned from that is a good story comes from the heart, typically from personal experience."

Nya Langit, a post-high CREATE student, is also acting as a team leader. Langit said collaborating with Nickelodeon is a wonderful opportunity.

"I personally want to get into concept art and Nickelodeon is one of the biggest employers for concept art," Langit said. "Working with them, I feel like I can get a lot of feedback on my work and how I can get into the industry."

"This project is also developing my people skills. I was very shy before starting in the CREATE program in Grade 9 and I've opened up a lot. Being a team lead forces me to interact with other people and it also helps me work on my leadership skills."

Sisler post-high student and team leader Jemimah Suba said she's grateful to be working alongside Nickelodeon employees, an opportunity that came in the Nick of time.

"It's a big inspiration boost with all this quarantine stuff going on and being stuck at home," Suba said. "I don't mind being stuck at home now because I get to work with all these amazing people."

In addition to the three animated stories, CREATE students will be creating a video documentary of the project and posting milestone moments on social media. The first Orange Tree Project weekly recap – created by Grade 12 student Jed Orellano – can be watched here below (or at https://vimeo.com/463147031):

Nickelodeon Launches 'Slime In Space: A Virtual Field Trip'

Nickelodeon worked with astronauts to test out slime in space! The result is a virtual field trip complete with activities for teachers and parents to share with their students.

A bag of Nickelodeon green slime floats above Earth inside the Cupola aboard the International Space Station. (Nickelodeon)

What happens when you send Nickelodeon slime to space? That pressing question was exactly what a group of NASA astronauts set out to answer, and now Nickelodeon wants you and your kids to come along for the ride! This free 15-minute virtual field trip will take kids 250 miles above earth to the International Space Station. There, they will learn along with the astronauts as they demonstrate how slime reacts in a microgravity environment compared to how water reacts in the same environment.

Watch the virtual field trip now on https://nickcommunity.com/sis - It's truly out of this world and a fantastic (wonderfully messy) way to learn!

You'll see just how far slime will travel when shot out of a giant syringe, and what happens when you pop a slime balloon in an environment where liquids are weightless. Will it float? Will it plop to the ground and make a huge mess? We'll find out! A favorite moment is when the astronauts play ping pong with floating balls of slime! Who doesn't want to watch astronauts play slime ping pong in space?!

Along the way, kids will be introduced to key vocabulary terms like viscosity and hypothesis and learn about non-Newtonian fluids in a way that's easy to understand.

Meanwhile back on Earth, host Nick Uhas, scientist Rihana Mungin, and a group of young students try to reproduce several of the slime demonstrations that the astronauts perform, and compare the two. They learn important scientific concepts and create an awesome green slime mess along the way. Comparing how slime and water squirt out of syringes or the difference between the splat of a water balloon and a slime balloon is science your students will remember!

Who should watch the virtual field trip? Anyone who loves science, space, and slime!

Classroom Resources

Teachers and parents can show the field trip on its own or use the teaching materials and printables available on the resources tab of Nickelodeon's Slime in Space hub. These guides were created with grades 3-5 in mind but are easily adaptable to other ages.

The teacher’s guide to the virtual field trip includes pre- and post-viewing activities for students, relevant scientific terms, and extension ideas. These activities help reinforce the lessons learned in the virtual field trip and help students gain a deeper understanding of the scientific process, microgravity, force, and viscosity.

Teachers can apply for the Slime in Space: A Virtual Field Trip Teaching Guide at https://www.weareteachers.com.

Learn more about the International Space Station by downloading this poster.

Track and view the station from your home by visiting the Spot the Station site.

Organized by the International Space Station (ISS) U.S. National Laboratory, the Slime in Space voyage, or "Non-Newtonian Fluids in Microgravity," project was aimed at creating educational videos and other content to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts to Nickelodeon's target audience, elementary and middle school students.

"Slime is a non-Newtonian fluid, a material in which its viscosity (resistance to flow) changes based on the amount of shear stress applied to it — for example, through squeezing or stirring," explained the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), the non-profit organization that manages the National Lab for NASA.

Packaged in its own specially-labeled "Slime Bag," the green fluid launched aboard a SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft with other science experiments and supplies for the space station's Expedition 61 crew in July 2019.

Since the early days of human spaceflight, astronauts have reported delight while observing the behavior of liquids in microgravity, from water blobs to quickly-decarbonated soda balls. It has not been all for fun, though, as past experiments have helped improve the design of fuel tanks and microfluidic devices for medical applications.

In addition to filming the slime experiment for Nickelodeon using traditional video cameras, the demonstration was also captured using a virtual reality (VR) 360-degree camera.

Nickelodeon gave viewers a sneak peek of Slime in Space during Kids’ Choice Awards 2020: Celebrate Together on Saturday, May 2.

The Magical Unicorn, Broccoli Girl and Bacon-Man: Nickelodeon Animation Visits 826LA

Barnacle’s Bookworms students at 826LA got a special visit from Nickelodeon last month, when over a dozen Nickelodeon animators visited the organization as part of Nickelodeon Let’s Draw program, and drew alongside students showing them the basics of illustration in the process! During their visit to 826LA, the Nick animators helped bring to life the students’ very own original characters.

Students were excited to draw alongside Nickelodeon animators and spend over an hour brainstorming funny and new characters. In some cases, students created one character, and in other cases, they created a whole slew of characters.

For example, students Christian B. and Crisitan M. worked with their animator to create Bacon-Man and Donut-Man who battled the evil (but healthy) Broccoli Girl! Another student, Ruby A., collaborated with the Nick animator to draw a CatDog hybrid that was over two pages long. Another student, Fatima L., came up with Maria The Magical Unicorn and her group of magical friends. Hopefully 826LA's talented students will continue to develop their characters and write them into adventures and new worlds, so that one day, we'll see their ideas on TV!

For students, this was a great way to practice visual character development and enjoy a morning drawing characters with someone who may animate a show they watch! The illustrations from this visit will be featured in the first Barnacle’s Bookworms chapbook so others can enjoy.

Check out more photos of the workshop here.

You too could help students draw their hearts out by signing up to volunteer!
