Nickelodeon Pakistan Reportedly Shuts Down

There are unconfirmed reports that Nickelodeon Pakistan has shut down, with the channel suddenly going off-air on Monday 28th October 2024.

Nickelodeon logo from 2017 rebrand

Operated by Pakistani media company ARY Group's Digital Network subsidiary under a brand licensing and programming agreement with Paramount Networks EMEAA, Nick Pakistan was a kids pay television channel. It was the Pakistani feed of Nickelodeon, and transmitted over the AsiaSat 7 satellite to cable and satellite viewers in Pakistan. Nickelodeon Pakistan's schedule featured programming dubbed or subtitled in Urdu, along with some content directly imported from its Indian sister network (owned by Viacom18). It also occasionally licensed Western market children's films.

The channel used to be available as a free to air channel but became encrypted on satellite since 2015. Unlike its Indian counterpart, which it replaced, the feed regularly aired Nickelodeon-related content instead of locally-produced content.

Prior to the launch of the localized Pakistani feed of Nickelodeon, the Indian feed was provided in Pakistan. However, the Indian feed ceased to be distributed in that country right after ARY Digital Network launched Nickelodeon Pakistan on 23 November 2006, with a brand licensing agreement with Viacom. It mainly broadcast content in English, along with some programming aired in Hindi rather than being dubbed in Urdu. This caused the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA)  to temporarily suspend Nickelodeon's license in 2016, although the channel later resumed broadcasting.

In 2010, Nickelodeon Pakistan took on the network's current worldwide imaging, including its logo. Its website was sunset in early 2021, presumably as it heavily utilized the discontinued Adobe Flash graphics/video format, and it was deemed more cost-effective to utilize the network's Facebook page than build out an entirely new modern website. On 1 April 2022, Nickelodeon Pakistan officially began carrying their schedule in native or dubbed Urdu full-time.

In 2005, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority issued an order regarding the ban of several non-private channels because programming which should have been dubbed into Urdu or used Urdu subtitles instead used Hindi terms and references blended into the local scripts or the networks carried all-Hindi versions imported from India outright.

In early 2010, PEMRA again issued a notice against children's networks and suspended the licenses of Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, disallowing them from broadcasting. In the meantime, the Pakistani government pushed unsuccessfully for PTV or another domestic broadcaster to launch a children's network to replace private broadcasters in order to assure PEMRA compliance with language standards.

On 1 August 2011, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Firdous Ashiq Awan, announced the restoration of the Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network licenses, allowing their return to the air, though she expressed disappointment that a domestic Pakistani broadcaster would not step up to broadcast children's programming, nor PTV would launch one, and that PEMRA would accommodate the launch any such network.

In the aftermath of the 2016 Uri attack, PEMRA again focused on Nickelodeon Pakistan as the network had begun to share programming with Nickelodeon India due to cost concerns, both within ARY and Viacom, and felt ARY was shirking off PEMRA's orders in order to economize against their orders; this also included the return of Hindi-blended and all-Hindi content to the Nickelodeon Pakistan schedule since their 2011 return to the air. The regulatory authority ordered a ban of the broadcasting of all Indian-originated media after 19 October, though PEMRA ruled that ARY Group had disregarded the order and continued to air imported programming with Hindi language content from Nickelodeon India during the restricted period.

The network's license to broadcast was suspended on 31 October, with local providers pulling the network on PEMRA's orders. Shortly thereafter, on 10 November, a stay from the Sindh High Court effectively nullified the PEMRA order and allowed Nickelodeon's return to the air, stating the body had no authority for the suspension without a comprehensive explanation. ARY also stated that the ruling PML-N party had used the regulatory power of PEMRA to oppose its networks due to its differing political opinions from the PML-N.

On 27 April 2017, the network carried an episode of Winx Club which featured a scene of what PEMRA alleged was an "indecently dressed" character, violating the body's 2015 Electronic Media Code of Conduct. After a month of appeals, PEMRA issued ARY a fine of ₨ 500,000 and warned the network against any further violations.

Since 28 October 2024, Nickelodeon Pakistan has stopped airing and suddenly closed for unknown reasons. It was replaced by other channels such as Planet Fun.

Through silly misunderstandings, Leah, Shimmer and Shine find themselves stuck with a giant birthday cake, some farm animals and no wishes left. Pakistan Suspends Nickelodeon’s TV Broadcast Licence For Airing Show Dubbed In Hindi

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has suspended the broadcast licence of Nickelodeon Pakistan for airing cartoons dubbed in Hindi language, days after Pakistan's media regulator decided to enforce a complete ban on Indian TV and radio contents amid Indo-Pak tensions. In Pakistan, Hindi is seen as being India's language.

The electronic media watchdog announced on Monday 31st October 2016 that Nickelodeon's licence had been suspended, effective immediately, due to violation of strict Pemra directives, following the Wednesday 19th October 2016 decision which stated that any satellite channel or those with landing rights would face bans over screening of Indian content in order to enforce a complete ban on airing Indian content on local television and FM radio channels.

"PEMRA has decided to suspend license of Nickelodeon for showing cartoon dubbed in Hindi. The channel violated the October 19 decision by PEMRA which banned showing Indian contents," it said in a statement, which you can read in full below:

The statement issued by Pemra said that ARY Communications, which holds the "landing rights" licence for Viacom-backed Nickelodeon in Pakistan, has been informed of the decision to bar the channel from distribution in Pakistan. Local reports say the decision by PEMRA is being seen as a 'tit-for-tat' move by Pakistan following similar action by some channels and the entertainment industry in India against Pakistani content and artistes.

Nickelodeon India is owned by Viacom18, and is based in Mumbai, India, and is also carried by cable operators in Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, the Maldives as well as Pakistan.

Tensions are also running high between the two countries following the Uri terror attack and India's retaliatory surgical strikes across the Line of Control (LoC).

Nickelodeon Pakistan Acquires Rights To "Burka Avenger" Season Two

C21Media is reporting the exciting news that Nickelodeon Pakistan has acquired the broadcast rights to the second season of "Burka Avenger", the locally produced cartoon series about a masked female schoolteacher who fights oppression!

The animated series (26×22') is one of the first animated productions to be made wholly in Pakistan and comes from Islamabad-based production firm Unicorn Black, which was set up by international pop star Aaron Haroon Rashid.

"Burka Avenger" first began airing in Pakistan on the Geo TV network in the summer of 2013 and quickly gained media attention worldwide for its portrayal of a schoolteacher who wears a burka to hide her identity while fighting evil.

Haroon, the campaign ambassador for Save the Children's Everyone Campaign that focuses on child health and nutrition, created the series as a way to emphasise the importance of girls' education in Pakistan and abroad, as well as issues such as equality and discrimination. It was commissioned for a second season following the success of the first on Geo TV.

The cartoon has since gone on to win numerous prizes internationally, including the award for best TV show at the Asian Media Awards in Manchester, UK, in 2014.
