Double Dare’s Philly Origins | Studio 2 from WHYY | 07/28/2026 | WHYY

Double Dare’s Philly origins | Studio 2 from WHYY | 07/28/2026 | WHYY

Get ready to go for a trip down green-slime memory lane. The iconic Nickelodeon show Double Dare is celebrating its 40th anniversary and we’re unpacking its unique ties to Philadelphia, as the show was originally produced right here at WHYY.

Host Marc Summers will be with us live in-studio to relive the memories, as will Double Dare sidekick John Harvey, whose “Harvey in the Morning” radio show was a staple in Philly in the 80s and 90s.

Guests:

– Marc Summers, TV personality and host of the original Double Dare
– John Harvey, TV and radio personality and announcer of Double Dare

Note: The Double Dare segment starts around the 11:00 minute mark.

The iconic Nickelodeon game show Double Dare is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and the celebration is coming back to where it all started: Philadelphia.

Host Marc Summers and original announcer John Harvey appeared live in studio on WHYY’s Studio 2 program on July 28 to revisit the show’s deep ties to the city. Double Dare was originally produced at WHYY, the public media station headquartered in Philadelphia, giving the green-slime-soaked game show a local pedigree that many viewers may not realize.

Summers, the TV personality who hosted the original Double Dare, helped turn the show into one of Nickelodeon’s signature programs. Harvey served as the show’s announcer and went on to become a familiar voice across Philadelphia radio. His “Harvey in the Morning” radio show was a staple in the city during the 1980s and 1990s.

The Studio 2 episode ran nearly 52 minutes, giving both Summers and Harvey room to revisit memories from the show’s early days and its connection to the Philadelphia media scene. For Northeast Philadelphia residents who grew up watching the messy physical challenges and trivia rounds, the anniversary is a reminder that one of kids’ television’s biggest hits got its start just down Broad Street.

Salute Your Shorts Cast Remembers Kirk Bailey as a ‘Consummate Actor’ and ‘Big Brother’ Figure as They Celebrate Show’s 35th Anniversary

Bailey died months after being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2022

NEED TO KNOW

  • Salute Your Shorts aired on Nickelodeon from 1991 to 1992
  • Venus DeMilo Thomas, Megan Mahdavi, Michael Ray Bower, Heidi Lukacsik and Danny Cooksey participated in a virtual reunion as the show celebrates its 35th anniversary
  • During their time on the Splat Attack podcast, they shared memories of their late castmate, Kirk Bailey, who played Kevin ‘Ug’ Lee

The cast of Salute Your Shorts is looking back at 35 years of Camp Anawanna memories.

Venus DeMilo Thomas, Megan Mahdavi, Michael Ray Bower, Heidi Lukacsik and Danny Cooksey appeared in a virtual reunion on the Splat Attack podcast, where they took time to remember late castmate Kirk Bailey, who played Kevin ‘Ug’ Lee.

Cooksey, 50, shared his favorite memory of Bailey, who died in March 2022 at the age of 59, six months after he was first diagnosed with lung cancer. Recalling an episode where the two decide to be each other for a day, Cooksey said, “He was so much fun.”

“He was so quick. He was so, so funny, and especially, he was just a good, good dude. He was great to work with,” he continued.

Mahdavi recalled Bailey as someone who “really took care of us”, using night shoots as an example.

“One of the cameramen was telling us that there was a prison on the other side of the hill, where they had some escapees, just to amp things up. And Kirk just made everything okay. He always made sure. That was who he was,” she added.

Lukacsik, 49, remembers Bailey as a true role model for her as a child actor, especially because she didn’t have the same background in the craft as some of her castmates.

“One of the things that I think he exemplified for me, and I don’t know if you guys agree, being a young actor, I looked up to him so much. Because I would struggle with my lines and memorizing things.... There was this scene where I had to dress up like Madonna. And I just couldn’t get that line and just struggled over and over and over again,” she recalled.

Michael Ray Bower Reveals the Heartfelt Reason Why the Last Episode of Salute Your Shorts is His Favorite

Bower played Eddie ‘Donkeylips’ Gelfin throughout the show’s run

NEED TO KNOW

  • Salute Your Shorts aired on Nickelodeon from 1991 to 1992
  • Venus DeMilo Thomas, Megan Mahdavi, Michael Ray Bower, Heidi Lukacsik and Danny Cooksey participated in a virtual reunion on the Splat Attack podcast as the show celebrates its 35th anniversary
  • Bower shared his favorite episode of the series and explained his unexpected pick

Michael Ray Bower finds the end of Salute Your Shorts to be bittersweet.

The actor, 51, played Eddie ‘Donkeylips’ Gelfin on the Nickelodeon series, which aired from 1991 to 1992. While he has many fond memories of his character’s adventures, during a reunion with his castmates on the Splat Attack podcast, he shared that, “The best episode, unfortunately, feels like it’s the last episode.

“It’s the last episode. Not because it ended, but because my character, throughout the series, started out as a bully and then became somewhat part of the heart of the show,” he explained.

Bower continued, “Then I ended up taking over the company as the CEO and kind of providing substance for the camp to make money through all the hijinks. And again, just for the big ugly doof... it’s a whole arc, like a villain-to-hero-arc, and I really, really enjoyed it. But I’m sad that was the last episode.”

Bower made another surprising admission during the episode, revealing that he’s not a fan of the show’s iconic theme song.

“I hate to be honest, I absolutely hate the f--king theme song,” he proclaimed.

“I’m sorry, excuse my language. But I’m on Cameo, trying to make a living off of my past. And every opportunity through Cameo or podcasts is, ‘Can you sing the theme song? Can you sing the theme song?’ And I even tell people my name is Michael Ray Bower, not Donkey Lips,” Bower explained.

Salute Your Shorts Actress Megan Mahdavi Praises Showrunners for Keeping the Series ‘Wholesome’ and ‘Rosy’ for Young Actors

The cast noted their Nickelodeon experience was different than that of shows that aired in the 2000s on the network

NEED TO KNOW

  • Salute Your Shorts aired on Nickelodeon from 1991 to 1992, but was syndicated on the network for a decade
  • The camp-based series was beloved by viewers and the young cast, who praised the safe work environment that many take for granted
  • Venus DeMilo Thomas, Megan Mahdavi, Michael Ray Bower, Heidi Lukacsik and Danny Cooksey participated in a virtual reunion on the Splat Attack podcast as the show celebrates its 35th anniversary

Megan Mahdavi has the fondest memories of her time on Salute Your Shorts.

The former actress appeared alongside castmates Venus DeMilo Thomas, Michael Ray Bower, Heidi Lukacsik, and Danny Cooksey in a virtual reunion on the Splat Attack podcast as the show celebrates its 35th anniversary.

Acknowledging that child actors don’t always have a positive experience on the sets of their projects, Mahdavi praised the crew behind Salute Your Shorts for providing an appropriate and positive environment for the show’s young talent.

“We had such a love affair with our crew. We had a young, cool crew and they took care,” she began.

“We had an amazing, amazing crew. Like these scandals coming out now that I read, I feel like, ‘Wow, we were the luckiest cast in the world because not only were our writers these wholesome guys who, their thought was like ‘Food is funny,’ “ Mahdavi acknowledged.

“I mean, they never did things to embarrass us or... I just feel like how lucky. If you’re going to be a child actor, how lucky to be a child actor with the nicest crew on earth,” she continued.

The star later added, “For me, it was just a really rosy experience. I think they took care of us as kids. So my memories of Salute Your Shorts are like, the best time of my life. I mean, I have kids now so nothing can ever be better than that, but yeah, it was just an awesome experience. It’s the summer camp I always wish I’d gone to.”

'The Secret World of Alex Mack' Cast Set to Reunite for Their First-Ever Convention at 90s Con In October 2026

"To get to reunite and reminisce with the cast of 'Alex Mack' is such a gift,' said Larisa Oleynik.

Long before Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider, junior high school student Alexandra Mack was nearly hit by a truck and drenched in an experimental chemical called GC-161 that gave her superpowers—and The Secret World of Alex Mack was born.

The Nickelodeon hit, starring Larisa Oleynik in the title role, aired for four seasons from 1994 to 1998. And now, it's been revealed that the cast is reuniting for their first convention at 90s Con in Hartford, Connecticut, in October.

Oleynik will be joined at the annual star-studded convention by Meredith Bishop (who played Alex's older sister Annie), Darris Love (who played Ray, Alex's best friend and next-door neighbor) and Natanya Ross (who was Robyn, one of Alex and Ray's neighborhood pals).

"To get to reunite and reminisce with the cast of Alex Mack is such a gift," Oleynik, 44, told PEOPLE, who first reported the news. "We hope the fans are as excited to share with us as we are with them! I'm very much looking forward to celebrating my favorite decade with some of my favorite people."

“After more than 30 years, to get to go back with my sacred 90s TV family and run it back one more time means more than I can even put into words," Ross, 44, says. "We are so excited to not only be at 90s Con together this October, but also to all be together as a family again. It's so incredibly special, and to do it at the literal Best 90s pop culture show out there, we are beside ourselves. Years in the making, baby!”

Oleynik recently made her Nickelodeon homecoming in the sitcom Erin & Arron, this time playing the mom.

The Secret World of Alex Mack is available to stream on Prime Video.

The cast joins an already stacked lineup heading to Connecticut this fall. The lineup includes Selma Blair, Rachael Leigh Cook, Nick Carter, AJ McLean and Tara Reid, as well as Melrose Place's Heather Locklear, Josie Bissett, Laura Leighton, Daphne Zuniga, Grant Show and Rob Estes; Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman duo Jane Seymour and Joe Lando; Step by Step's Patrick Duffy, Christine Lakin, Staci Kean, Angela Watson, Christopher Castile, Sasha Mitchell, Josh Byrne and Jason Marsden; Perfect Strangers pair Bronson Pinchot and Mark Linn-Baker; Hocus Pocus director Kenny Ortega and stars Thora Birch, Vinessa Shaw, Omri Katz, Larry Bagby and Tobias Jelinek; and Wishbone voice actor Larry Brantley.

90s Con runs from Oct. 16-19 at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford. Weekend and day passes are available to purchase through the official website.

'Hey Dude' Cast Reunites at the Ranch, 35 Years After Nickelodeon Show's Conclusion

The cast of the early Nickelodeon hit reunited at the very ranch where they filmed the show, which ended 35 years ago this summer

Hey Dude, the gang is back together!

The cast of Hey Dude, the Nickelodeon Western comedy series that followed a group of teen ranch workers, reunited at the Tanque Verde Ranch in Tuscon, Arizona, where the series was filmed, for a special episode of the Hey Dude... The 90's Called! podcast.

The live reunion aired on Saturday, January 31, 2026, 35 years after the show came to a conclusion in August 1991. Hosts Christine Taylor and David Lascher had fun taking a trip down memory lane with their fellow cast and crew members — David Brisbin, Kelly Brown, Debra Kalman, Joe Torres, Geoffrey Coy, Jonathan Galkin, and Josh Tygiel.

During their chat, Brown, who played Brad, talked about revisiting what's left of the set, which still remains in the area.

"It felt like, well, 'This is what the last few seconds must be like when you leave the Earth,' because [I felt] everything," she began.

"I pulled through those gates and it was, all the memories, everything, was flooding. And I actually went yesterday, before all you guys, because I knew I was gonna be emotional," Brown admitted.

"I got the cries and the tears out and the choking up. I got it all out yesterday. It was emotional. It was very emotional. We spent a lot of time there... It was very intense."

"And also, a lot of it is just not there," Taylor, who played Melody, pointed out. "That's also very surreal. Like, our bunk house, Brad and Melody's bunk house, gone."

"Rubble," Brown agreed.

Hey Dude premiered on Nickelodeon in July 1989 and ran for five seasons until Aug. 1991. Casting for the series was done, in part, in the Tucson area. Tygiel, who played Buddy, was cast through local auditions, which is ironic because Buddy was new to ranch life in the show's action.

Each season took place over the summer and dealt with coming-of-age issues like friends and romance, while also spotlighting ranch life.

The reunion will be available in full for listeners who couldn't make the live stream as an episode of Hey Dude... The 90's Called!, which Taylor and Lascher have hosted since 2022, in the coming weeks.

Hey Dude Alum Joe Torres Explains Why His Favorite Episode Is One He Was 'Written Out of' After an Off-Set Accident

The cast of the early Nickelodeon hit shared laughs and memories as they reunited on the ranch where it all began, 35 years after the series' conclusion

NEED TO KNOW

  • Hey Dude premiered on Nickelodeon in July 1989 and ran for five seasons until Aug. 1991
  • Original cast members Christine Taylor, David Lascher, David Brisbin, Kelly Brown, Debra Kalman, Joe Torres, Geoffrey Coy, Jonathan Galkin and Josh Tygiel participated in a live reunion at the Tanque Verde Ranch in Tucson, Arizona, where the series was filmed
  • The cast members talked favorite episodes and best memories, which will be featured as an upcoming episode of Taylor and Lascher's podcast, Hey Dude... The 90's Called!

The Hey Dude cast always had each other's backs!

When discussing favorite episodes of the series during their recent reunion at the Tanque Verde Ranch in Tucson, Arizona, where the series was filmed, Joe Torres, who played Danny Lightfoot, laughed with Christine Taylor as they remembered a storyline that was transferred from him to her after a mishap left him unable to be in the episode.

While the costars didn't specify which episode, Torres began by joking, "My favorite episode was the one that I got written out of."

Taylor called the moment a "great story," urging Torres to share the background of an off-set injury that led him to miss the episode.

"At that time, I was into really into mountain biking. I went on an ill-fated ride, a midnight ride up Sabino Canyon, and coming back down, I hit... they have a stone bridge and there's a turn, and I hit that bridge, went over and landed in the like a wash," he recalled.

"Luckily, there were other people riding with me, and they were able to get me up, get me out."

While Taylor remembered Torres having a dislocated shoulder, he clarified, "I broke my collarbone."

As for the episode scheduled for that time, Torres noted it was "an episode I was fairly prominent in," explaining, "So, she was me," referring to Taylor, adding, "That was my favorite."

Taylor admitted, "I don't remember it at all, but Joe remembers it [because] it made no sense that I was the one who was suddenly put into that episode. But I forgot about that injury, I really forgot about that."

David Lascher, who costarred on the show and is Taylor's cohost on Hey Dude... The 90's Called! podcast, joked, "Christine wanted that storyline really bad."

Leaning into the joke, Taylor laughed, adding, "I knew some local guys that may have messed with your brakes."

Torres laughed, noting, "I would not put it past..."

"Sweet Melody," Taylor finished the thought.

Hey Dude premiered on Nickelodeon in July 1989 and ran for five seasons until Aug. 1991. Each season took place over the summer and dealt with coming-of-age issues like friends and romance, while also spotlighting ranch life.

The reunion will be available in full for listeners who couldn't make the live stream as an episode of Hey Dude... The 90's Called! in the coming weeks.

REUNITED! Drake Bell on Touring, Fatherhood & Life After Nickelodeon | Josh Peck

REUNITED! Drake Bell on Touring, Fatherhood & Life After Nickelodeon | Josh Peck

Oh boy, do we have a treat for you this week. Drake Bell is back on the show and immediately thrown into the madness: Josh’s flu-voice, Ben’s missing a*s (as confirmed by Zepbound), and a deeply emotional discussion about… toddler pooping anxiety. We catch up on Drake’s wild year - 91 shows, 150 flights, Latin America tours, dad life in Florida, Minions Land obsessions - and Drake tells the full story of the absolutely deranged reality show that made him dive off a 33-foot platform and burst his eardrum. We also get into parenting philosophies, routines, gambling responsibly (we think), dermatology fears, how becoming fathers changed everything, and whether the trio has officially entered their “unc” era. It’s nostalgic, hilarious, heartfelt, and exactly the kind of episode fans loved the last time Drake joined the show.

Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell Set to Reunite and Star in Horror Comedy ‘Kenan & Kel Meet Frankenstein’

Nickelodeon legends Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are teaming up once again for a horror comedy film that will pit the pair against an iconic monster.

Kenan and Kel Meet Frankenstein

Thompson and Mitchell will star in and produce the film Kenan & Kel Meet Frankenstein. The announcement was made during the Amazon sports talk show Good Sports, which Thompson typically co-hosts with Kevin Hart, though Mitchell was filling in as guest host. The full clip can be seen below.

The film will begin production this summer. Per the official logline, the story follows “two delivery drivers whose routine drop-off takes a terrifying turn when they arrive at a creepy, out-of-place castle and accidentally awaken Frankenstein’s monster — turning an ordinary night into a fight for survival.”

However, this will not be Thompson and Mitchell’s first horror comedy together. They also starred in the Nickelodeon made-for-TV movie “Two Heads Are Better Than None,” which aired as a finale movie for their beloved sitcom, Kenan & Kel.

“Kel and I have always loved finding new ways to work together, and this project felt like the perfect mix of nostalgia, comedy, and something completely unexpected,” said Thompson. “We’re excited to bring a fresh take on a classic monster story and have some fun doing it.”

“Coming back together always feels natural, and this lets us tap into everything people love about our dynamic while trying something totally new,” Mitchell added. “It’s funny, it’s scary, and it’s a great ride.”

This marks the comedy duo’s first announced joint project since they reunited for Good Burger 2 in 2023. At that time, they teased that they were planning to keep collaborating moving forward. Thompson and Mitchell first met when they were both cast members on the Nickelodeon sketch comedy series All That, from which Good Burger originated. Along with the success of the first film, the duo worked together for four seasons on Kenan & Kel. Thompson is currently the longest-serving cast member of Saturday Night Live, while Mitchell recently featured in the Nickelodeon reality series Play It Forward: Game On.

Jonah Feingold (At Midnight, 31 Candles) will write the screenplay for the new film. Thompson and John Ryan Jr.’s Artists for Artists will co-produce with Range Media Partners. Ryan Jr.,, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and Carter Swan will produce alongside Thompson and Mitchell, with Will Hariton, Azim Spicer, and Monica Weber executive producing.

“First it was Abbott and Costello, then Pryor and Wilder. Kenan and Kel,” said Ryan Jr. “Think Shaun of the Dead meets Scooby-Doo.”

Range Media will handle sales, led by Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Pete Micelli. Thompson and Ryan Jr. are represented by Range Media Partners; Mitchell by Innovative Artists, Untitled Entertainment, and Mark S. Temple; and Feingold by UTA, Untitled, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.
