Sony Shifts 'Garfield' Movie To May 24, 2024

Sony Pictures delays the release of its upcoming animated adaptation of Garfield, which is set to star Chris Pratt as the lasagna-loving orange cat.

Sony Pictures has delayed the release of its upcoming Garfield theatrical movie starring Chris Pratt.

As reported by Variety, Sony will shift the release of Garfield from its original release date of Feb. 16, 2024, which is now the new release date for Madame Web, to Memorial Day weekend on May 24, 2024.

Sony's new release date for Garfield comes after news that the film would release in February 2024. A reason for the delay was not provided.

Written by David Reynolds and directed by Mark Dindal, the upcoming untitled animated Garfield film has been in development since late 2018, before Nickelodeon acquired the Garfield franchise in August 2019. Pratt's casting in the lead role as the eponymous orange feline was announced in 2021.

The movie is based on the classic comic strip by Jim Davis, who sold the rights to financer/producer Alcon Entertainment (Blade Runner: Black Lotus) and will serve as executive producer. DNEG (Ron’s Gone Wrong) is producing the animation.

It was announced in May that Samuel L. Jackson (Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank, Incredibles) had joined the cast of the animated film as Vic, Garfield's father, a new character created for the film. Joining Pratt and Jackson are Ving Rhames (Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Wendell & Wild), Nicholas Hoult (The Great, Watership Down), Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso, Krapopolis) and Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live, Loafy). Details on which characters the stars will play have not been revealed, though other fan-favorite characters like Garfield's canine friend Odie and their owner Jon Arbuckle are expected to appear in the film as well.

Paramount Applies to Register Trademarks For TMNT, CatDog, Real Monsters, Invader ZIM, Angry Beavers and Slime NFTs

Following the success of Nickelodeon's first batch of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), it looks like Nickelodeon will be bringing more iconic properties to the NFT marketplace in the near future.

According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Paramount Global, the parent company of the Nickelodeon brand, has applied to register the trademarks for NFTs inspired by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, CatDog, AAAHH!!! Real Monsters, Invader ZIM, and Angry Beavers, as well as for Slime.

Paramount has applied to trademark Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesAAAHH!!! Real MonstersInvader ZIMAngry Beavers, and Slime under NICE Classes 09 and 42, and CatDog under NICE Class 09.

NICE Class 09 is for scientific and electric apparatus and instruments, downloadable multimedia files containing artwork relating to the field of entertainment authenticated by non-fungible tokens (NFTs); downloadable virtual goods, namely, crypto-collectibles and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), whilst NICE Class 42 is for scientific, technological and industrial services, research and design: software as a service (SAAS), namely, software for transferring crypto-collectibles and application tokens; platform as a service (PAAS), namely, software for accessing crypto-collectibles and application tokens; providing online non-downloadable computer software for enabling the transfer of crypto-collectibles and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

At the time of posting, each trademark application, filed earlier this month (Sept. 2022) is currently pending approval.

The news follows the success of Nickelodeon's first NFT drop earlier this summer in partnership with RECUR, which saw the release of NFTs based on two beloved Nickelodeon properties from the '90s: Rugrats and Hey Arnold!. Nickelodeon also applied to register the trademark for SpongeBob NFTs earlier this year, which is still pending approval.

In addition to RECUR, Funko has also released Nickelodeon NFTs based on retro Nickelodeon favorites as well as Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.

We May Have SpongeBob's Origin Story All Wrong

SpongeBob SquarePants had a previous name of SpongeBoy, with his original Nickelodeon show being called SpongeBoy Ahoy. Why did it go from SpongeBoy to SpongeBob? A well-known story reveals that it's because a mop was named SpongeBoy. Turns out, that could be wrong. Stephen Hillenburg had intended SpongeBoy Ahoy to be the final title of his Nicktoon, until someone else using the name SpongeBoy was discovered. In a recent video from YouTube creator Kid Leaves Stoop, we discover the truth behind SpongeBob SquarePants' origins, and what we may have had wrong for so many years.
