Teary-eyed audiences might have said goodbye to the Tony-winning Broadway musical SpongeBob SquarePants on September 16 just before residents of Bikini Bottom packed up their dressing rooms at the Palace Theatre. But in its final week on Broadway, the fan-favorite tuner based on the beloved Nickelodeon animated series saw a hearty boost at the box office. The musical took in a gross of $1,052,896.50 USD, up from last week's intake of $828,817.50, filling the Palace to 94.18% capacity, a strong increase from last week's attendance of 80.97%, and marks the musical's second highest-grossing week since it began (and its highest of 2018). This might feel like goodbye to SpongeBob SquarePants for now, but the show will soon delight audiences across the US when it launches a national tour in fall 2019, so there is still plenty to look forward to for SpongeBob and his family of friends. Amateur licensing for the musical is slated to become available in early 2019 as well.
Although it was the final Broadway performance of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical, the cast, crew and audience made sure that the show went out with a bang, with raucous joy filling the entire theatre. To commemorate the last performance, for the performances intermission, Tom Kenny recorded a special message as his iconic French Narrator character saying “last intermission ever”, at which point, the audience collectively screamed “NOOOOO!”.
Before and following the final performance, the cast and crew of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical went onto social media to say goodbye to the show, and say thank-you to fans for their support:

Nickelodeon showed off a new line of Turtle-themed consumer products in New York on Thursday tied to the network’s latest animated series, “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”
The line of licensed products will focus on toys when it launches this fall, including action figures, vehicles and role-play products made by Playmates Toys, the master toy licensee for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brand.
The basic action figures include the band of brothers – Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello and Michelangelo – along with April and Splinter, as well as new characters like Meat Sweats and Baron Draxum. The highly detailed and fully articulated figures will range in height from 3.25 inches to 5 inches.
Deluxe action figures will stand 5.5 inches tall and have flipping features. Once activated, the Turtles will let out a shout as they flip backward or sideways, landing on their feet with a Turtle weapon sound effect.
For fans looking for bigger action, Playmates will have a line of giant figures that stand 10.25 inches to 11 inches tall with 13 points of articulation. Each figure will come with their core translucent weapons.
Vehicles include the Shell Hog motorcycle with Leonardo or Michelangelo and the Turtle Tank, which can transform into a mobile ops unit with a secret lab.
But the most epic toy is appropriately named the Epic Sewer Lair Playset, which towers over other TMNT playsets at 43 inches tall. The deluxe playset will include more than 20 features across four levels, including rooms for training or kicking back with a video game and a slice of pizza.
The role play assortment will feature the Turtles’ weapons: Leonardo’s odachi, Raphael’s tonfas, Donatello’s tech-bo staff and Michelangelo’s kusari-fundo.
Each weapon will come with a signature Turtle mask and a newly designed throwing star.
The series, a reimagined look at the heroes in the half-shell, is set to debut on Nickelodeon in September. A preview of the show aired July 20 and is available on nick.com and YouTube. The toys are expected to hit retail shelves in October.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Relaunches With WWE, J. Crew and Amazon Ahead of New Series | Nickelodeon
Nickelodeon targets ‘a broader demographic than we ever have before’

Nickelodeon has already ordered a second season of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which premieres tonight.
Nickelodeon isn’t just turning up the heat on its new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. The number-one kids network is also bringing the muscle with John Cena and the WWE, making a splash at SummerSlam, one of the biggest events of the year for the sports entertainment brand, and heavily promoting the superstar’s role as a villain in the new animated TV show.
The 26-episode series, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, debuts today at 6:30pm ET/PT on Nickelodeon USA, and Nickelodeon has already ordered a second season.
In the run-up to its relaunch of the multibillion-dollar franchise, Nickelodeon has also aligned with Amazon, J. Crew, Sonic Drive-In and Walmart to “go down every aisle at retail and reach a broader demographic than we ever have before,” said Pam Kaufman, recently named president of Viacom/Nickelodeon global consumer products, whose division has made Turtles its first worldwide project.
Actor-pitchman-grappler-Kids' Choice Awards host Cena has been at the heart of the promotion for the show, in which he plays Turtle nemesis Baron Draxum.
WWE, whose long relationship with Nickelodeon includes collaborating on hybrid Turtle-superstar action figures in 2016, made Turtles a high-profile on-site and cross-media presence during the recent SummerSlam 2018 at Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Barclays Center—followed by three more nights of programming, including Monday Night Raw.
Costumed TMNT characters rubbed shoulders with WWE stars at the arena, with giveaways and photo ops for fans.
Turtles content and promotion ran on WWE’s heavily trafficked media and social channels so extensively that “you couldn’t experience SummerSlam week without knowing, seeing, touching, feeling the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” said John Brody, WWE’s evp, global sales and head of international.
“We tried to help Nickelodeon really cut through and deliver something unique, different and powerful” to the family-friendly all-ages crowds attending the event and watching on various media platforms, said Brody.
Still to come: custom content with WWE superstars like AJ Styles and Xavier Woods and a Facebook Live stream from SmackDown.
For his part, Cena has been hyping the new Turtles show on his social media channels, in addition to stumping with other Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles voice talent, including Ben Schwartz, Omar Miller, Josh Brener and Brandon Mychal Smith.
Cena, who appeared at Nickelodeon’s upfront presentation in March and Turtles-specific Licensing Show events, has history with the network, having hosted the Kids’ Choice Awards two years in a row, with the first Rise trailer dropping during the show in March. He also donned a Turtles costume on the Kids’ Choice red carpet.
As a franchise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been a hit since its comics first appeared in the ’80s, subsequently raking in billions of dollars from TV, videogames, movies and merchandise. But the brand was largely dormant when Viacom bought it for $60 million in late 2009.
Two Paramount films (and a third on the way) and a TV series followed, after which the company cleared the shelves of most Turtles products and kept things on a low burner for the past couple years.
“We made a calculated decision to go quiet with this property, even though it was still in the zeitgeist,” Kaufman said. “Now we’re bringing it back with this big, global unified effort.”
The network seeded the reboot at San Diego Comic-Con, with a VR experience, and released more early sneak peeks and additional content on digital and social channels than it’s ever done for any other series, Kaufman said.
While Nick skews primarily to 6 to 11-year-olds, network execs put together far-ranging partner programs to take advantage of Turtle nostalgia while trying to appeal to a new generation of children and their parents.
The colorful characters—known as “heroes in a half-shell”— are appearing on 2 million Amazon Prime boxes this month, and their retro images are gracing a fashion line for adults at J. Crew. A separate streetwear collection is in the works.
Sonic has created co-branded commercials to tout its “totally tubular” themed kids meals and toy premiums, while Walmart has stocked enough Turtles swag to make what Kaufman called “a massive retail statement.”
The remake features a multiethnic cast and an overhauled look, with the retro TMNT catch phrase: “Cowabunga!” It centers on four pizza-loving teenage brothers, Raph, Leo, Donnie and Mikey (named for Renaissance artists Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello and Michelangelo) who battle “mystics, mutants and madmen.” And since the setting is present day, they also skateboard and write code.
