Manolo Villaverde, 'Gullah Gullah Island', 'Taina' and '¿Qué Pasa, U.S.A.?' Actor Passes Away, Aged 91

Actor Manolo Villaverde, who starred as Pepe Peña in the first bilingual sitcom on American television, ¿Qué Pasa, U.S.A.? and featured on Nickelodeon's Gullah Gullah Island and Taina, sadly passed away on Saturday, January 10, according to the show’s executive producer, Pepe Bahamonde. He was 91.

“I knew from the moment that I started doing the casting for the show that there were certain people that I wanted in certain characters, and Manolo was one of them,” Bahamonde told the Miami Herald.

Villaverde played a father, Pepe Peña, in the popular show that was on air from the late 70s to early 80s. It won six regional Emmys and was being broadcast on 121 different stations across America by the time its four-year, 39-episode run was up.

The sitcom was created through a federal grant with the concept of helping young Cuban Americans deal with cross-cultural conflicts, Bahamonde said, adding that Villaverde was a Cuban exile.

It centered around the Peña family, who had three generations – grandparents, parents and children – all living under one roof in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood, he said.

“Manolo was such a fine character,” he said. “There was no ego. Manolo was the joker of the group. Whenever we had a break, he would be the one telling the funny stories and the jokes.”

While the show was a local phenomenon, it found a broader appeal by its second season, according to Bahamonde. It played on stations across the country, and the sitcom ultimately attracted more viewers from other backgrounds than its original Cuban viewership.

Many people took to fan pages and social media accounts Saturday and Sunday to praise his groundbreaking role in ¿Qué Pasa, U.S.A.?

Radio host Enrique Santos said in a Facebook post that the sitcom marked generations. It helped many newly arrived families adapt to America and helped Americans understand Cubans, Santos said.

“Manolo Villaverde, our Pepe Peña, was the head of that family and the reflection of so many fathers and grandparents,” Santos said. “Manolo, thank you for teaching us how to laugh in both languages. Rest in peace.”

Beyond the show,Villaverde was a lifelong artist, and featured in many plays and series.

On Nickelodeon, he portrayed "Abuelo" on preschool series Gullah Gullah Island, along as Gregorio "Abuelo" Sanchez on musical sitcom Taina.

However, it seemed Villaverde was most proud of his work on ¿Qué Pasa, U.S.A.?, Bahamonde said.

People would shout “Pepe Peña” at him on the streets and recognize him when he traveled, and he enjoyed that, Bahamonde said.

Villaverde moved to Daytona Beach about two years ago, he said. When he retired from television and theater, he started painting.

His death comes as a “terrible surprise,” Bahamonde said. They had maintained a friendship throughout the years and chatted recently in the New Year.

The way people are reacting to Villaverde’s death helps to convey how much he was loved, he said. There is a “void that Manolo leaves behind for the people that knew him.”

“He was not just a good actor,” Bahamonde said. “He was a good person.”

Bright sunny weather is bringing back memories of Gullah Gullah Island.

Natalie Daise, who starred on the beloved Nickelodeon children's show that aired from 1994 to 1998, has joined TikTok. Daise decided to start sharing the story of how the show came to be on TikTok last week, uploading one or two videos a day.

She begins by clarifying that she and her husband Ron Daise are not the creators of Gullah Gullah Island, but were "stars and consultants for Gullah Gullah Island."

"Gullah Gullah Island was indeed a show based around our lives in our real lives and community, and our real family life. But Crescent Productions created and produced Gullah Gullah Island. I'm going to tell you the story of how it started," she says.

Daise explains she grew up in Syracuse, N.Y., and moved to Beaufort, S.C., as a young woman after a "violent interaction that involved my person and was very scary." There, she moved in with her grandmother, aunt, uncle and cousins.

This Rare Conversation With Gullah Gullah Island's Ron and Natalie Daise Is Guaranteed to Warm Hearts

If you're reading this, you're probably humming the Gullah Gullah Island theme song. So, you already know you can't miss what stars Ron and Natelie Daise had to say about their beloved show below.

Nickelodeon/Viacom

Remember when we used to play together in the bright sunny weather?

[Click here to watch a video with Ron and Natalie Daise!]

Starting in 1994, Nickelodeon transported kids to a magical, fictitious island through Gullah Gullah Island. Starring real life couple Ron and Natalie Daise, the series—based on the West African culture Gullah Geechee—taught preschoolers about family, sea critters and kindness through song and dance. (And, of course, they had a little help from a 5-foot polliwog, Binyah Binyah.)

But perhaps more importantly, the show allowed its young viewers to feel represented in a TV landscape that didn't always reflect how the world looked. Unbeknownst to those at home, the stories and songs featured in Gullah Gullah Island mirrored the actual lives of Ron and Natalie. Even their kids Simeon and Sara had roles!

And though they took their final bow in 1998, the family is still educating the world about their culture through their art.

Nickelodeon/Viacom

So, just put your foot in your hand—that means hurry up, you'll miss the good things that we'll find —because E! News sat down with the South Carolina-based couple and you don't want to miss the good things that they've shared.

E! News: Take us back to the beginning. How did Gullah Gullah Island come to life?

Ron Daise: Gullah Gullah Island came to life at a dinner conversation. A producer, Maria Perez-Brown, had come to scout for sights for another show.

Natalie Daise: We were talking about children's TV, and how there's nothing for our older daughter Sara to watch where anyone looks like her. Maria then said, "Nickelodeon is trying to diversify maybe we could do a show about you." We had a meeting with executives with no agent, no manager, never shot anything, never planned anything. By the end of the day, they green-lit the show. That was June 1993, and we were on the air within a year.

E! News: While creating the show, how much input were you able to offer?

RD: We were cultural consultants. Each episode had characters going into the Gullah Gullah Island community. That was our real life.

ND: The parade in the show was the high school band. The makeup lady was my friend who sold Mary Kay. We sat in front of our tape recorder, sang songs and then mailed the tapes. They gave the tapes to their musicians and made music based on our real life. Our kids were in the show because I was nursing Simeon. Where I went, they went.

RD: Peter Lurye, head musician, had written a theme song. I suggested another line that would be more culturally appropriate with a Gullah Geechee expression: "Just take your foot in your hand, that means hurry up." I became a co-writer of the theme song!

Nickelodeon/Viacom

E! News: When did you realize the show was a hit?

RD: I had an expectation of it doing well. As well as it did? No. People in South America would send us mail saying how much it meant to them. There was someone in Australia who really loved the show. Even now, we get regular communications from people saying they are watching with their children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren.

ND: We did that first season, and, you know, we were just making it up. I remember that first year after it aired, we were at a mall and somebody started yelling, "Uncle Ron!" It was a surprise for me, it really was.

E! News: How did Binyah Binyah come to be?

RD: Initially, the producers had a different character, which we said no to. It was not a part of Gullah culture. We're glad that they followed through with that understanding. We made suggestions of Gullah words and expressions for the name and Binyah was selected. A "Binyah" is the Gullah Geechee expression for someone who is a native of who has been here or been-yah. If you relocate into a Gullah Geechee community, you would be a come-yah. Because it was a preschool show, the producers liked the alliteration of putting them together.

ND: That's why they named the show Gullah Gullah Island. Part of Gullah language is to repeat a word to intensify it.

E! News: What's been your favorite fan interaction from over the years?

ND: I'm in a supermarket minding my own business and I see this older white man. And he's got this little boy with him that looks like he's Latinx. The man comes up and he says, "You mean a lot to my boy." And he gave me $5 and a carnation.

We have not had any negative interactions. But I did have someone try to get me to sign something underneath the bathroom stall doors. I'm like, "Can y'all wait till I come out?!"

RD: For me, it was halfway around the world at a historical event in Sierra Leone, West Africa, one of the rice coast countries which numerous Gullah Geechee people are descendants. We were on this ferry wearing Priscilla's Homecoming, A Gullah Homecoming t-shirts. A gentleman said, "Is that Gullah as in Gullah Gullah Island?" He came over smiling and wanted to take a selfie. He wanted me to know the impact that this show had on him. The colors, the language, the features of the people. They reminded him of growing up in Nigeria, so that was just a wonderful experience.

Nickelodeon/Viacom

E! News: Do you think we could ever see a Gullah Gullah Island reboot?

ND: It could work. There are people's children watching it now and they are as fascinated as their parents had been. It was a bit of a surprise after Gullah Gullah Island that more shows like that didn't happen. We had been in meetings with other networks and they were saying, "Kids can't follow along...They just need ditties. If it's longer than a few seconds, they don't get it." And I'm like, "You're joking, right?" Kids knew all the songs in Gullah Gullah Island and they know all the songs you don't even want them to know!

RD: Viewers liked that each show taught a lesson and that there was a family. People saw us as if we were their parents or their uncles or aunts. We were a positive influence in their lives.

E! News: Why do you think there's such an the enduring love for the show?

ND: Because we were genuine. We weren't acting. When I first started doing the show, we were storytellers in theater. And the first time they set up that camera, it was terrifying. I said to myself, "That camera is a window. I can talk to that kid on the other side. He lives on my street." Before Gullah Gullah Island, when we weren't on the road, Ron would be home and neighborhood kids would come down to see if Mr. Ron could come out and play.

RD: The kids would see me out with our older daughter. And that's what the producers saw when they followed us around. Natalie is always doing crafts and that's what they saw. That's how the characters were developed.

ND: We just got to be ourselves. It was a real family and that comes through. I didn't just meet him on day one on set, you know?

Natalie Daise

E! News: You have been together for almost 40 years. What's your secret?

ND: The best thing I can say is that I really like him. He's my friend and he's my partner. And when we got married, there were people like, "You have to have the big wedding!" The wedding is not the thing. It's the marriage that's the thing. Also, it's not for everybody, but we've enjoyed working together! We've been singing together for 38 years.

RD: We find things to laugh about. Our children thought the families of their peers would sing in their homes all the time because that's what we do.

ND: Simeon, Sara, Ron and I are known to burst into song at any given time, sometimes inappropriate. Don't let there be good music in the supermarket! I'll be like, "Baby, please stop singing out loud."

Freda Funnye

E! News: Simeon is all grown up now and now an actor himself. Does he plan to keep the Gullah Geechee culture alive through his work?

ND: That's his whole focus, absolutely! He and his sister are co-producing a documentary called Saltwater Vibes and it's about the evolution of Gullah culture. It's like the family business.

E! News: And what are you two up to these days? Ron, we've seen those Gullahlicious pound cakes you've been making...

RD: I ship Mr. Ron's Gullahlicious pound cakes through Etsy. There are patrons who say they're eating a Mr. Ron pound cake with their child or their grandchild as they're watching an episode of Gullah Gullah island! It's not to promote Gullah culture, but that's what I'm doing.

ND: They are amazing cakes! I joke, but I'm also kind of serious, that's partly why I married him. He could sing and he could bake!

Daise says more than two decades later, she’s still coming to understand the impact the show had on young Black children, especially those of Gullah Geechee descent.

“I can only say, it’s taken this many years to realize the full impact of what we did,” Daise said.

Vanessa Baden Talks About Working on 'Kenan & Kel'

Actor Vanessa Baden isn’t the cute little girl from Nickelodeon anymore. She has gone on to become a writer, producer and director for many shows, and she is also a mother.

The Emmy winner recently opened up to Atlanta Black Star about her childhood in Hollywood, how she discovered writing as a passion and a necessity, and the challenges of balancing work and her personal life.

Baden began her acting career on Gullah Gullah Island for Nick Jr., but she really hit her stride when she landed the role of Kyra Rockmore on Nickelodeon’s hit show Kenan & Kel. Alongside some true talent, as Kenan Thompson went on to become a household name, Baden’s energy and charm shone through as Kenan's on-screen sister Kyra, who had a massive crush on Kenan's best friend, Kel (Kel Mitchell).

“I can remember the general feel and tone and something that I was recently telling my son was that we still shot in front of a live studio audience on ‘Kenan and Kel,’” Baden told Atlanta Black Star.

“So, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday were rehearsal days. … We filmed Wednesday and Thursday and then we would get a few pick-up shots the top half of Friday. Then after lunch, they would load in the live studio audience and you would run the whole entire show almost like theater in front of the studio audience to get their real-time reactions.”

The entire experience was a blast for these Nickelodeon regulars. Like Baden, they got to mix and mingle with other kids in Hollywood.

“On an artistic level, I don’t think there’s anything better than performing in front of a live studio audience,” the 36-year-old said. “You’re truly doing theater week in and week out. And you’re learning, but I just remember the electricity of it. … You’re getting hyped and you’re trying to get your energy up and everybody’s dancing and everybody’s doing whatever.

The show also had former child actors as their directors. “When we were doing ‘Kenan and Kel,’ we had Malcom Jamal Warner from ‘The Cosby Show,’” she said. “We had Kim Fields from ‘Facts of Life’ and ‘Living Single.’ Ryan Robbins, who was one of our producers but also directed us often, was from ‘Head of the Class.’”

Those veterans offered the young actors some valuable advice. “And one of the things that they would always tell us is, ‘If you guys wanna have longevity in this arena, you’re going to have to do other things because there’s going to be times when age-wise you’re at a weird place and there are ebbs and flows in the creative part.’”

For Baden, the example those mentors set was taken to heart. “I really attached myself to Kim Fields. I loved her. I felt like I saw myself a lot in her and she was a director. So I thought essentially that that was going to be the path I took. I was going to be a director.”

After four years on Kenan & Kel, Baden would go on to be a panelist on Nickelodeon's hit game show, Figure It Out. She even broke into film and was cast as Lee-Ruth in the dark historical drama Rosewood.

Baden feels lucky to have been a part of the Hollywood child celebrity scene. She still bumps into people from her time on Nickelodeon and has remained close friends with Kenan Thompson long after their show wrapped.

While she saw success as a child actor, she decided to put acting on hold and go to college and attended Florida State. Once she graduated, she decided to go back to Hollywood, but noticed a change in the industry. She revealed that at that time, opportunities for Black actors were scarce.

“There were like seven things that had Black people in them and they were recycling the same three girls. It was Meagan Good, Jurnee Smollett or Lauren London. If they couldn’t get one of those three, someone new might pop in but [it was those three] who they were going for,” she claimed.

You can read Baden's fantastic interview with Atlanta Black Star in full at atlantablackstar.com!

‘Gullah Gullah Island’ Stars Ron and Natalie Talk About the Show’s Creation and Overall Success

CHARLESTON, S.C. – It’s a tune those who grew up in the mid-90s know all too well; “come and let’s play together in the bright sunny weather…” Gullah Gullah Island was a popular preschool series that aired on Nickelodeon from 1994-98.

It follows an African American family as they learn about life with friends, neighbors, and their big yellow pet pollywog Binya Binya.

What makes it special – especially to those who grew up in South Carolina's Lowcountry – was its setting on South Carolina’s sea islands.

In this week’s episode of Let’s Talk, News 2 anchor and podcast host Carolyn Murray talks to Ron and Natalie Daise, co-creators and stars of the show based on Gullah-Geechee people and culture.

Ron was born and raised on St. Helena Island. He met his wife, Natalie, when she moved to the Lowcountry from New York and created the sing-along series together.

They turned everyday activities into teachable moments through storytelling, songs, and gameplay.

“The network did not know that it would become as popular as it did,” said Ron. “I think it was ‘okay, we’ve done this now we can move on,’ but then it went – at that time – four years in production, and until that time Nick Jr. shows had gone a total of three.”

“In terms of success, I remember one day the executive director of Nickelodeon said something like ‘do you know how many million people watch this every day,’” Natalie recalled.

But how did it all come together? Natalie said she was working for the Town of Hilton Head Island and left her job so they could both hit the road full-time as storytellers and performers.

“I had been doing community performances, doing readings and dramatizations, said Ron. “And Natalie said, around that time, ‘wouldn’t it be great if we could be like Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis?”

They would perform skits and presentations for schools and community organizations. “We grew and developed over time, but there was always a sense, to me at least, that this is what we’re doing that is going to lead to something. I’m not sure what it’s going to lead to, but it’s going to lead to something,” said Ron.

Natalie said Gullah, Gullah Island came about by grace. “We had been traveling, doing performances. At that time, we had a baby – she was a wonderful road baby – and then she was pregnant again and we began to talk, it’s one thing to have one baby on the road.”

While Natalie was pregnant, they began to look for something else. “We went to some folks we respected and said what do you think is next for us? They said ‘well, you’ve been playing around long enough it’s time for you to get a job with benefits and just try to be grownups now.’ We were like that doesn’t feel like what’s next…”

It was during a dinner with a friend, who was a novelist when they began discussing television for children and how there was no diversity. The friend stated, “well, you know Nickelodeon is going to diversify.” She and her partner had already pitched shows that were not picked up when they introduced Ron and Natalie to the network.

The then Nickelodeon CEO, said, “wow, I always wanted to do a show about an island, maybe I can do a show about you,” said Natalie. “The production company, the network, was very open to being respectful and to incorporating the culture into the show – not just letting it be the backdrop, but sort of saturating it. Things just came in naturally.”

Props from '90s Nickelodeon Shows, Including 'Clarissa', 'Double Dare', 'Weinerville' and More Up for Grabs in Upcoming Auction

Bruneau & Co.'s Summer Comic, TCG & Toy Auction on July 10th will feature the Pop Culture creations of Eric Baker

Baker did props and set dressing for Nickelodeon Studios, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney World and Disneyland.

Screen-used Frankenstein operation game from Nickelodeon’s popular Double Dare TV show (1991), used in numerous episodes throughout the show’s run. Estimate: $1,000-$1,500.

CRANSTON, RI, UNITED STATES, July 1, 2021 -- Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers’ Summer Comic, TCG and Toy auction on Saturday, July 10th, starting at 10 am Eastern time, is shaping up as the firm’s biggest and best Pop Culture sale to date. In addition to the abovenamed categories, the first 52 lots will be from the collection of Eric Baker, someone who’s very well-known and respected in the community.

Mr. Baker was the creative lead of props and set dressing for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney World and Disneyland. He was also Nickelodeon’s prop master and fabricator. Several of the props in the auction were fabricated by him during his career with Nickelodeon. Other items are objects he collected.

“I’m honored that we get to handle the collection of Eric Baker, not just because of his unbelievable career but for the fact he’s a longtime friend,” said Travis Landry, a Bruneau & Co. auctioneer and the firm’s Director of Pop Culture. “So cool to think we’re bringing his creations to market, especially when you consider Nickelodeon props are so elusive to collectors today.”

The Upside-Down Compass of Henry Hudson, used on-screen in Nickelodeon’s Legends of the Hidden Temple TV game show, featured in the show’s 90th episode (1995). Estimate: $300-$500.

The screen-used Frankenstein operation game from Nickelodeon’s popular Double Dare TV show (1991), used in numerous episodes throughout the show’s run, has an estimate of $1,000-$1,500. The prop, 84 inches tall and 32 inches wide, retains the heart, saw, wrench and hammer accessories. Included is an original snapshot of the Frankenstein, taken on-set by Eric Baker.

Two prototype shrunken heads from Universal Studios’ Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park, made circa 2015, will be sold as one lot, with an estimate of $800-$1,200. These were the samples to the production ‘Shrunken Heads’ found in the park’s gift shops. Each has production notes on the bottom, in marker. The heads are approximately 5 ½ inches tall by 4 inches wide.

Also from the Eric Baker collection, The Upside-Down Compass of Henry Hudson, used on-screen in Nickelodeon’s Legends of the Hidden Temple TV game show, an artifact that was a point of focus in the show’s 90th episode in 1995, is expected to change hands for $300-$500. The compass is a little more than 6 inches in diameter and just shy of 2 ½ inches in height.

The second portion of the catalog will include 321 lots of graded CGC and CBCS comic books, in addition to group lots of Golden, Silver, Bronze, and Modern Age comics. The entirety of the recently graded CGC Silver and Bronze age comics came from an original owner New Jersey collection Bruneau & Co. processed this year – truly a great selection of books. The final portion of the catalog includes 166 lots of Pokémon trading cards.

Wizards of the Coast Pokémon Gym Challenge 1st edition factory sealed booster box from 2000, a true Holy Grail item for Pokémon / TCG collectors. Estimate: $20-$10,000.

“The comic sales always bring so much color to the gallery,” said Bruneau & Co. president and owner Kevin Bruneau. “The comics in this sale are phenomenal, especially the high-grade Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man, and other Silver Age comics, which all came from the New Jersey collection. It’s great to see them go from carboard liquor boxes to beautiful CGC slabs.”

A strong candidate for top lot of the auction is the copy of Marvel Comics Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963), graded CGC 8.0 and featuring the origin and first appearance of the Avengers, plus appearances by the Fantastic Four, Loki and Teen Brigade. It has an estimate of $18,000-$24,000. Mr. Bruneau called it “the finest copy of Avengers #1 we have handled to date.”

Not far behind is a copy of Marvel Comics Amazing Spider-Man #14 (July 1964), graded CGC 9.0 and having a pre-sale estimate of $10,000-$15,000. The comic book features the very first appearance of the Green Goblin, as well as the first meeting of the Hulk and Spider-Man. Like with Avengers #1, Mr. Bruneau said this is the finest example of ASM #14 he’s ever handled.

Two prototype shrunken heads from Universal Studios’ Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park, made circa 2015, to be sold as one lot. Estimate: $800-$1,200.

Other comic books will include a copy of Marvel Comics X-Men #1 (Sept. 1963), featuring the origin and first appearance of the X-Men and Magneto, graded CGC 3.0 (est. $7,000-$10,000); and a copy of Marvel Comics Avengers #4 (March 1964), featuring the first Silver Age appearance of Captain America, plus Sub-Mariner, graded CGC 8.0 (est. $3,000-$5,000).

On to Pokémon, and the ever-popular world of TCG (Trading Card Games). A Wizards of the Coast Pokémon Gym Challenge 1st edition factory sealed booster box from 2000, a true Holy Grail item for Pokémon / TCG collectors, as well as a 1999 French Pokémon base 1st edition Dracaufeu (Charizard) holographic trading card, graded BGS 9.5 Gem Mint, will both cross the auction block. The final price is anyone’s guess; each has a pre-sale estimate of $20-$10,000.

Marvel Comics Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963), graded CGC 8.0, with the origin and first appearance of the Avengers, plus the Fantastic Four, Loki and Teen Brigade. Estimate: $18,000-$24,000.

The auction overall has more than 550 lots. Live, in-house bidding will be reserved for active bidders only. To save a seat, call 401-533-9980. Four Ways to Celebrate Juneteenth | Nickelodeon

Friday is Juneteenth, here are some ways you can honor the holiday.

Juneteenth commemorates the day slaves in Texas learned they were free — June 19th 1865, two years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and two months after the Civil War ended. Now it seems like Black and allied voices who’ve been working to get Juneteenth recognized as a national holiday are finally being heard. Forty-seven states and the District of Columbia recognize Juneteenth as a holiday, and companies including Nickelodeon, Amazon, Google, Nike and Target have all decided this year to observe it.

So, how do you observe Juneteenth? Celebrations vary across the nation, with Texas, of course, having some of the most grand, but there’s one overall way for everyone to celebrate: rejoice in Black culture with loved ones.

Here are just a few of the many ways to celebrate Freedom Day:

  • REFLECT on your successes! Juneteenth honors Black freedom, education and achievement.
  • PLAN to make big changes for the better! Juneteenth is traditionally a time for self improvement & goal setting.
  • REJOICE! Spend time with family, eat good food, and have lots of laughter.
  • INDULGE yourself by watching Nickelodeon shows starring Black actors - many of which are available on NickHits on Amazon Prime. Titles include '90s classics My Brother and Me, a wholesome yet funny show about a Black middle class family living in Charlotte, N.C., Gullah Gullah Island, a sing-along show about a Gullah family living on the South Carolina Sea Islands with their huge frog friend, Binyah Binyah, and Kenan & Kel, the sitcom starring Kel Mitchell and SNL's Kenan Thompson.

Ron and Natalie Daise Encourages Everyone to #StayStrong Throughout COVID-19 Pandemic

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Ron and Natalie Daise from Nickelodeon's beloved '90s preschool series Gullah Gullah Island have joined the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) to encourage everyone to continue to do their part to help slow the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus).

As part of DHEC’s #StaySCStrong influencer campaign, the Ron & Natalie and other fellow prominent South Carolinians are sharing educational video messages on steps everyone can take to protect themselves and others from COVID-19.

In their video feature, Ron and Natalie remind viewers that COVID-19 threatens us all, especially the elderly and African-Americans with health conditions, as well as give viewers tips on how we can all stop the spread of the virus.

Last week, the agency shared a video featuring singer and songwriter Darius Rucker who offered words of inspiration and encouraged South Carolinians to stay strong. “If we stay careful, stay connected, spread caring, we’ll get through this,” Rucker said.

Public service announcement videos also feature Stephen Colbert, Congressman James Clyburn, Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin, State Epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell, Closing the Gap in Health Care Founder Dr. Thaddeus J. Bell, and University of South Carolina Women’s Basketball Head Coach Dawn Staley. The PSAs are available to view and share here.

For more information about DHEC’s #StaySCStrong campaign and to learn how you can make and share your own video, visit scdhec.gov/stayscstrong.

How Everyone Can Protect Themselves
Evidence is increasing about the high rates of infection in people who do not have symptoms and don’t know they are infectious. This places everyone at risk of getting the virus or unknowingly transmitting it to someone else. Steps we can take to protect ourselves and others include:

  • Practicing social distancing
  • Wearing a mask in public
  • Avoiding touching frequently touched items
  • Regularly washing your hands
  • Monitoring for symptoms

Anyone with concerns about their health should reach out to their healthcare provider or use the telehealth services provided by several health care systems. If you live in South Carolina, for telehealth options and the latest information about DHEC’s COVID-19 response efforts, visit scdhec.gov/COVID19. Visit scdmh.net for stress, anxiety and mental health resources from the S.C. Department of Mental Health.

Portrait Of: ‘Taina’ and the Love of Nostalgia TV | Latino USA

In the 90s, tax lawyer Maria Perez-Brown made a career switch from law to entertainment, specifically children’s television. She’s the creator of two prominent multicultural shows for Nickelodeon: Taina and Gullah Gullah Island.

In the latest episode of NPR's Latino USA podcast, the show focuses on the legacy and nostalgia of Taina. The show, which premiered in January 14, 2001, was about a 15-year-old Latina from Queens who attended the Manhattan High School of the Performing Arts and constantly daydreamed of being a star. She’s portrayed by Christina Vidal.

The show touched on themes of family, culture and what it’s like being a Nuyorican teen living in between two worlds. While the show only ran for 26 episodes over two seasons, Taina is seared into the memories of many who grew up watching it, because at the time it was rare to see an authentic portrayal of what it was like to be a Nuyorican teen.

“Taina for me was my alter ego,” says creator Maria Perez-Brown. “I felt that Taina reflected the dreams that every young Latina has to aspire to be something and that something doesn’t only have to be an athlete or a movie star. She had a passion for something and she wasn’t going to stop at anything until she accomplished her goals.”

Maria Hinojosa sits down with the award-winning show creator to talk about the show’s surprisingly long legacy and about working to diversify children’s television in the early aughts.

Listen to the latest episode of NPR's Latino USA podcast below, followed by Taina's catchy theme song!

In 2001, Nickelodeon started airing "Taina," a show about a Latina teen who attends a performing arts high school in NYC and daydreams of being a star. While the show only lasted two seasons, "Taina" is seared into the memories of many who grew up watching it, because at the time it was rare to see an authentic portrayal of what it was like to be a Nuyorican teen in the early 2000s. Maria Hinojosa talks to the show's award-winning creator Maria Perez-Brown, who is Nuyorican herself, about jumping into the world of children's television after being a tax lawyer.

Life can be tough when you're a teenager. There's so much to think about: school, homework, clothes, friends and parents. But things get even more complicated when you're determined to become famous as well.

Welcome to the world of Taina Morales, a student at the Manhattan School of the Arts who dreams of stardom, and loves music and dance. But her journey to fame and fortune isn't an easy one as she deals with love troubles, difficult auditions and pressures from her Puerto Rican family.

Yes, it's tough getting to the top, but she's determined to get there. And with the help of best mates Renee, LaMar and his partner-in-crime Daniel McDaniel, she definitely stands a good chance, even when arch-rival Maritza is trying to steal the limelight for herself!

Taina stars Taina Morales as Christina Vidal, Khaliah Adams as Renee, Chris Knowings as Lamar, David Oliver Cohen as Daniel, and LaTangela as Maritza. Recurring cast includ Lisa Lisa as Gloria Elana Morales, Cristina Saralegui as Principal Rojas, Josh Cruze as Eduardo Morales, Manolo Villaverde as Gregorio "Abuelo" Sanchez, Brandon Iglesias as Santito Morales (season 1), Selenis Leyva as Titi Rosa, Joseph Bertot as Hector Colon, Ruben Rabasa as Papito, and Jacob Urrutia as Santito Morales (season 2). Guest stars include: Nick Cannon (All That, The Nick Cannon Show, Lip Sync Battle Shorties, HALO Awards, Vice President of TeenNick) as LaTanya, Jaci Velasquez as Yvette, Luis Fonsi, Shakira, Carlos Alazraqui (Fairly OddParents, Rocko's Modern Life) as Stan LaBlan, Kelly Rowland as Nicole Burke, Melanie Chartoff as Sasha Simmons, Tina Landon, Jackie, Dream, Lil' Romeo (Romeo!), C-Note, and the girl group 3LW as Blue Mascara.
