David Bittler Steps Down as Paramount's EVP Communications for Kids & Family

David Bittler, a 25-year Paramount/Viacom veteran, is leaving the company where he most recently served as Executive Vice President (EVP) Communications for Paramount Kids & Family. He announced his departure in a company memo, a copy of which was obtained by Deadline.

He is the second top-level corporate communications executive to leave following Skydance’s acquisition of Paramount Global, joining Liza Burnett Fefferman, who recently stepped down as EVP and Head of Communications for Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks. They worked for the two Paramount Global co-CEOs who departed when the transaction was completed, Brian Robbins and Chris McCarthy, respectively, with the co-CEO areas getting divvied up post-merger.

In this most recent role, Bittler oversaw strategic communications and media relations for Nickelodeon, Awesomeness and the kids & family content for Paramount+.

Over the years, he has led multi-platform campaigns across theatricals, streaming, linear television, consumer products and live experiences and has steered communications for such global franchises as SpongeBob SquarePants, PAW Patrol, Dora the Explorer, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Bittler joined Viacom in 2000. He spearheaded the historic debut of Logo, the first ad-supported LGBTQ+ television network, and also worked at MTV Networks, Spike TV and TNN.

“It has been years of long hours, big wins, and countless challenges, and for me, time flew for all of it. I could take the pro forma route here and list all the things I’m most proud of, but that’s already on LinkedIn,” he wrote in his email to staff. “So instead of telling you what I did, I will tell you why. I did it for the audience. I did it for our people here and for our brands that mean so much to so many. But most of all, I did it for love.”

Bittler, who was instrumental in shaping Nickelodeon's brand’s image in the industry and with consumers, demonstrated his wry sense of humor with the subject line of his exit memo: “I Was Dreaming When I Wrote This.” That’s the opening line of Prince’s indelible hit “1999,” which is the year before the Nickelodeon communications executive joined the kidvid powerhouse in New York, after working in TV news communications for CNN and CNBC.

Here is his memo, which carried the subject line “I Was Dreaming When I Wrote This”:

Hello, all you beautiful people!

For those who remember, that was the MTV Networks-era opening line for so many of the speeches and email missives delivered to us, and I humbly use it today to harness that spirit to signal my departure from these storied halls of 1515 Broadway.

For so many years, this company has been a big tent party both on and off the screen(s), welcoming in fresh directions and new ideas from all paths of life as we worked together to create a wealth of groundbreaking characters, shows, experiences and moments that electrified the culture globally time and time again.

But you already know this. That’s the draw. That’s the pull. That’s what keeps us coming back day after day and year after year—to be a part of these teams, a part of this bounty of creativity, a part of it all.
And while today we find ourselves in another era of evolution, and at an exciting inflection point, this is the turn in the road where I must loosen the yoke and diverge from this pack of marvelous people and from the brands and shows I have promoted and protected for so long…like Nick and Nick at Nite, MTVN, Logo and Spike, SpongeBob and Dora, iCarly, Avatar: The Last Airbender, PAW Patrol and all the TMNTs under the sun.

It has been years of long hours, big wins, and countless challenges, and for me, time flew for all of it. I could take the pro forma route here and list all the things I’m most proud of, but that’s already on LinkedIn. Come follow me!

So instead of telling you what I did, I will tell you why. I did it for the audience. I did it for our people here and for our brands that mean so much to so many. But most of all, I did it for love.

Ciao, for now!
David

Nickelodeon Netherlands to Go 24/7 on Dutch DTT Service Digitenne on July 1

Nickelodeon will start to broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week on Dutch digital terrestrial television platform Digitenne, which is owned and operated by KPN, from Friday 1st July 2022.

Nickelodeon currently timeshares with Spike on Digitenne channel 12, with Nickelodeon programming for kids and families airing throughout the day and older-skewing programming airing in the evenings.

Paramount Global will rebrand Spike as the Paramount Channel on Tuesday 24th May 2022. This involves more than a name change: the station is also changing its program offering, which is aimed more at an adult target group. For example, films from the Paramount collection, such as The Godfather and Forrest Gump, plus series such as Yellowstone and Elementary, will be added. Digitenne customers can watch Paramount Network until July 1 on pre-set channel 12 in the evening and night.

KPN will not increase the subscription price of Digitenne on July 1. However, due to this channel change, subscribers can cancel the current subscription free of charge. This can be done in writing or via the customer service that can be reached free of charge.

From Totaaltv:

ViacomCBS Networks and Sky Italia Sign New Agreement in Italy

Originally published: Wednesday, January 08, 2020.

VIACOMCBS NETWORKS AND SKY SIGN NEW AGREEMENT IN ITALY

The new long-term deal includes the expansion of ViacomCBS Networks Italy’s portfolio on Sky platforms and a new commercial deal

Milan, January 8th 2020 – ViacomCBS Networks and satellite TV platform Sky Italy have announced a new multi-year deal to extend their collaboration in Italy.

According to the agreement signed by the two companies, Italian viewers of Paramount Network, Spike and VH1 will also be able to watch these channels on Sky. This will bring the number of ViacomCBS brands available on Sky platforms in Italy to 12, including local versions of MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr, Comedy Central and Italian kids’ channel Super!.

ViacomCBS Networks Italia (then named Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Italia) fully acquired the free-to-air kids TV channel Super! from De Agostini Editore in October. Super! focuses on children ages four to 14, and features a catalogue of local and international content. The channel is fully operated by ViacomCBS Italia.

ViacomCBS and Sky Media also agreed a commercial deal in which ViacomCBS channels and digital advertising in Italy will be entirely sold by Sky Media effective from Sunday 2nd February 2020.

The agreements build on a long-standing and successful relationship between ViacomCBS and Sky across Europe, with Sky distributing and selling advertising across ViacomCBS’ portfolio of channels in the UK for the past decade.

Raffaele Annecchino, President, ViacomCBS Networks Southern & Western Europe, Middle East and Africa, commented: “With Sky as our main distributor and ad sales partner, we can sustain our strong position in the Italian market in the long-term and deliver additional benefits for our viewers and advertisers, including content synergies and wider distribution across multiple platforms. Our new commercial agreement with Sky Media represents an opportunity to effectively support our business and brands over the next years in Italy, which remains one of the most important and valuable markets in which we operate”.

Giovanni Ciarlariello, Chief Media Digital & Data Officer Sky Italia: “This strengthened deal with ViacomCBS Networks will give even more investment opportunities to our customers and confirms Sky Media’s role as a key player in the market as well as the high quality of its innovative services”.

Following the initial announcement that Viacom was to re-merge with CBS, a number of announcements have been made regarding the merged company’s leadership team. Former Mattel executive Venetia Davie recently joined ViacomCBS Consumer Products as VP of UK and Ireland, while Stefanie Schwartz was upped to EVP and GM of Viacom Digital Studios (VDS). Schwartz is replacing current president Kelly Day, who is in talks for another senior role at ViacomCBS.

CBS and Viacom completed their merger on Wednesday 4th December 2019, becoming ViacomCBS.

From Prima Comunicazione:

L’accordo porta a dodici i canali complessivamente distribuiti.

Andrea Castellari, EVP e AD ViacomCBS Networks Italia, Medio Oriente e Turchia dichiara:

From Il Sole 24 ORE:

Tv, accordo in Italia fra Sky e ViacomCBS

Viacom Italy Buys Remaining Stake in Italian Kids Channel Super!

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN), a division of Viacom, has announced the acquisition of the remaining 50 per cent of Super Broadcast S.R.L., the company that owns and operates the Italian free-to-air (FTA) kids’ TV channel, Super!, from De Agostini Editore, which has so far been operated as a joint venture. The deal will see Super! be added to Viacom Italy’s portfolio as the American media conglomerate continues to expand in the region. Moving forward the channel will be fully operated by Viacom Italy, integrated into the existing content structure led by Senior Vice President (SVP) of editorial content Sergio Del Prete.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Super! is aimed at children aged 4-14 with a pipeline of local and International content, including programming from Nickelodeon. As part of this transaction, De Agostini Editore will continue to collaborate with VIMN Italy providing De Agostini’s original content to the channel.

Raffaele Annecchino, President and Managing Director (MD), Southern and Western Europe, Middle East & Africa (SWEMEA), VIMN, commented: “I’m pleased to confirm this new achievement in our ongoing strategy to strengthen our presence in Italy, a market where we have a strong position on pay-TV with our main brands and premium content, including Nickelodeon. The acquisition of Super! further reinforces the VIMN relevance in the kids’ segment in Italy and increases the exposure of our properties and touchpoints.”

“Super! Has gone far beyond our expectations: launched in 2012 in an overcrowded market, by 2018 the channel had gained a leading position in the kids Italian sector, which was achieved for a second year in 2019. Now we’re passing it to Viacom, who will further enhance the heritage of the brand Super!. We, as De Agostini, will focus our efforts on our channels distributed on Pay TV, on our digital platforms as well as on content production and co-production, which we have already successfully developed in these past few years”, affirmed Pierfrancesco Gherardi, Managing Director Digital Division, De Agostini Editore.

Through the acquisition of Super! Viacom in Italy will reach more than 35 million viewers per month and strengthen its position in the market as one of the most important international media networks in Italy. Super!'s TV audience share amounted to 7.5 percent in the demo of children aged 4- to 14 from June through August, according to the firm.

Viacom already owns and operates three free-to-air digital terrestrial TV channels in Italy – Paramount Network, Spike, VH1 – and also owns 11 branded channels including Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., TeenNick, MTV and Comedy Central, which are all distributed on Italy’s leading pay platform, Sky Italia.

VIMN took an initial 50% stake in Super! in 2017 as a joint venture (JV) with De Agostini Editore as part of a drive to extend its presence in the Italian FTA market, with VIMN Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Lynn noting that free-to-air distribution helped the company grow ratings and revenues in TV markets where free-to-air networks are predominant.

At the same time as the initial Super! deal, VIMN acquired a digital FTA frequency to launch a local version of Spike in a market that is home to the highest number of FTA channels in Europe.

Earlier this month, VIMN made yet another move in Europe with the appointment of former Disney SVP and ITV Studios head Maria Kyriacou as president for UK, Northern and Eastern Europe, responsible for overseeing all of the company’s media networks and related businesses in 33 European countries.

De Agostini Editore, meanwhile, inked a global distribution agreement with BBC Studios in July for the Italian-language kids series New School. Produced for Italian-language kidsnet DeAKids and airing on Super!, the 78 x 15-minute comedy is aimed at six- to 12-year-olds.

Italy, which has the most free-to-air channels of any European TV market and is the third-largest European territory in terms of advertising revenue, has long been a focus market for Viacom, which has added free-to-air brands to its pay TV presence there. "Free-to-air channel launches have helped us significantly expand our reach amongst Italian TV viewers, and we’re ambitious for future share growth in this valuable and important TV market," David Lynn, president and CEO of VIMN, had said in 2017.

The deal comes ahead of Viacom's planned combination with sibling company CBS Corp., which is expected to close in the coming months.

From TvZoom:

Libby, MT: MontanaSky To Drop Viacom Channels On Wednesday 20th December 2017

Citing a price increase in Viacom’s contract renewal, MontanaSky, a cable & satellite company in Libby, Montana has unfortunately announced that they will stop carrying Viacom programming effective Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017.

“Viacom’s contract renewal demands would have forced MontanaSky to double our current pay television rates over the course of the next five years, a move we found to be unacceptable,” a news release states.

MontanaSky said it plans to add "new and updated" channels "without a rate increase" in 2018, according to the news release. These will include “direct feeds from local networks, FOX Business, GRIT TV, The Cowboy Channel, Universal Kids, Sportsman, Comedy.tv, GAC, Revolt, INSP, IFC, REELZ, Cooking.tv, ION, Boomerang, Outside.tv, Pets TV, Hallmark Drama, Cars TV and the Olympic Channel.”

The channels that will no longer be available include Nickelodeon, Nicktoons, TeenNick, Nick Jr., BET, MTV, MTV Hits, MTV2, VH1, VH1 Classic Soul, TV Land, Spike TV (to be rebranded as Paramount Network), Comedy Central, CMT and CMT Pure Country.

“Most of those networks are still available through online services such as Hulu, Amazon, iTunes and Netflix, which are all accessible through a MontanaSky internet connection,” the news release states. “Most of Viacom’s programming may also be accessed directly from the individual television channel websites.”

Anyone with any questions or comments regarding these changes should feel free to contact their local MontanaSky office, or call MontanaSky at 406-293-4335.

Viacom And Charter Reach Tentative Deal On New Carriage Agreement

Viacom Inc. and Charter Communications have reached an agreement in principle on a new carriage contract, a deal that will keep Viacom’s networks on Charter’s Spectrum service without disruption. The two companies confirmed the news in a joint statement: “Viacom and Charter have reached an agreement in principle. Spectrum subscribers will continue to have access to Viacom’s networks, without disruption, while we finalize terms.”

The companies on Sunday night agreed to a “short-term” extension of their carriage negotiations after the expiration of the current deal. Leading up to the deals expiration date, Charter customers were warned of a potential blackout or lockout of Viacom's channels, however, due to the extension, Spectrum’s 16.6 million customers were able to keep watching Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and other Viacom networks as the talks continued.

No terms of the agreement have been disclosed, but it's likely to be viewed as at least a partial victory for Viacom CEO Bob Bakish, who has been engineering a turnaround at the conglomerate since he took over last year.

The impasse follows a recent dispute between Disney and Altice, which acquired Cablevision and now operates the Optimum cable service. Those parties had clashed primarily over sports rights, whereas the issue with Charter and Viacom is the decision last spring by Charter to remove bedrock Viacom channels like MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central from basic service on Spectrum and put them on a higher-priced tier. Along with that move, it rolled out a skinny bundle that features no sports -and no Viacom. Bob Bakish, who became Viacom CEO in 2016, has publicly admonished Charter for the moves, which comes as he sets a new overall strategic course for the company.

Charter acquired Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks last year to become the second biggest cable operator in the United States, giving its Spectrum-branded service roughly 26 million subscribers in about 41 states.

Both sides are under pressure from cord-cutting, or dropping of pay television, as audiences flock to cheaper streaming services that have emerged in the past decade.

Viacom And Charter Agree To Short-Term Extension Of Carriage Negotiations

Viacom Inc. and Charter Communications have agreed to a “short-term” extension of their carriage negotiations while the two sides continue to negotiate terms of renewal to a deal that will enable some 16.6 million customers to keep watching Viacom’s cable networks, including Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Nicktoons, MTV, and Comedy Central.

The existing long-term deal was due to expire Sunday, October 15, and had spurred a dispute between Viacom and Charter.

As early as last Wednesday (October 11), Viacom had warned that it was unable to reach a deal with Charter. The media company began running ads on Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and BET, featuring talent for each network warning viewers of the possible disruption in service and urging them to call Spectrum, and crawls at the bottom of the screen on some networks, urging viewers to pressure Charter to keep Viacom. It also launched a website, called keepviacom.com, and enlisted celebrities like Trevor Noah, host of The Daily Show on its Comedy Central, to tweet about the situation.

Meanwhile, Charter launched a microsite, suggesting that Viacom is overpaid. The site reportedly said that Viacom’s “business is suffering and they are trying to boost their bottom line at the expense of you, our customer,” and that the company “has been overpaid for their channels over the recent year.” A Charter spokesperson could not be reached for immediate comment.

Following reports that the two sides continued talks Sunday night beyond the 7 pm deadline, a spokesman from Viacom issued a short statement explaining “Viacom has agreed to a short term extension of our renewal deadline with Charter while we work to reach a mutually beneficial deal.” The extension has succeeded in avoiding an immediate blackout of Viacom networks for Charter subscribers.

Without a deal, both sides stand to lose. Charter’s 16.6 million subscribers would lose access to Viacom’s networks, including Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and MTV. Meanwhile, Viacom could lose $760 million or 16% of its annual affiliate revenue, reports Reuters.

Charter acquired Time Warner Cable in 2016 to become the No. 2 U.S. cable operator.

Both sides are under pressure from cord-cutting, or dropping of pay television, as audiences flock to cheaper streaming services that have emerged in the past decade.

The stalemate in negotiations stem from Charter's decision last spring to remove bedrock Viacom channels like Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central from basic service on Spectrum and put them on a higher-priced tier. Along with that move, it rolled out a skinny bundle that features no sports -and no Viacom. Bob Bakish, who became Viacom CEO in 2016, has publicly admonished Charter for the moves, which comes as he sets a new overall strategic course for the company.

NEW YORK -- Viacom (NASDAQ: VIA, VIAB) has issued the following statement regarding the status of renewal negotiations with Charter Communications:

“Viacom has made a series of very attractive offers to Charter that are consistent with terms we’ve recently reached with other large cable operators. Importantly, these offers would enable Charter to lower Spectrum subscribers’ bills, while also giving them more access to shows across Nickelodeon, BET, MTV, Comedy Central and other Viacom networks.

"Viacom is committed to developing strong, mutually beneficial relationships with our distribution partners. Despite our efforts, Charter continues to insist on unreasonable and extreme terms that are totally inconsistent with the market. While we’re making every effort to reach a new deal, Charter's actions may force a disruption in their service.”

The current deal between Viacom and Charter is due to expire on Sunday 15th October 2017, reports Reuters. A blackout would hit 16.5 million subscribers.

Earlier this year, Charter moved Viacom’s flagship networks to its most expensive programming tier, a move that threatened the media company’s affiliate and advertising revenue.

In addition to Nickelodeon, BET, MTV and Comedy Central, other Viacom networks Charter customers are set to lose include TV Land, Spike, Logo, CMT and VH1.

Viacom is planning to run a “crawl” on its networks on Charter telling viewers the TV outlets may be disrupted if the tone of its current talks does not change, a person familiar with the matter told Variety. Ads talking about the negotiations are also possible, this person said. Charter reaches approximately 16.5 million subscribers. The company broadened its national footprint in May of 2016 by buying Time Warner Cable for approximately $65 billion.

Viacom, for its part, finds some of Charter’s current demands onerous, a person familiar with the talks told Variety. Charter, this person said, wants to keep Viacom from taking part in so-called “skinny bundle” packages that would make a narrower selection of TV networks available to consumers looking to pay less for linear content.
