'Legend of Korra' on Netflix Looks Weird Due to Frame Rate Issue

The Legend of Korra's settings on Netflix have the show playing back at the wrong frame rate, creating a "ghosting" effect throughout Season 1.

Though The Legend of Korra is now available to stream on Netflix, an issue with the show’s framerate may result in the show not looking quite as good as you remember. The animated series, a spinoff-sequel of Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, was made available for streaming on August 14th, giving fans renewed interest in the world of Avatar.

Avatar: The Last Airbender has been in the news this month for several reasons. Most notable is the fact that Avatar creators and Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko recently announced that they would be leaving the production team of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of their series. In an open letter, Konietzko attributed the pair’s departure to the negative work environment at Netflix. This announcement led to questions of whether Netflix would be able to handle the world of Avatar appropriately without the creators involved.

Though it is a small technical issue, the frame rate problem with The Legend of Korra certainly doesn’t help Netflix’s case. Spencer Wan discovered the issue and outlined the details on his Twitter. Wan, who is currently working in visual development for the upcoming Spider-Verse sequel, said that the frame rate issue with The Legend of Korra was frankly painful for his “animator eyes.” In the thread, Wan explains that the first season of The Legend of Korra had a rate of 23.97 frames per second, but later seasons switched to 24 frames per second. Unfortunately, Netflix has the entire series, including Season 1 (or "Book 1"), playing back at 24 frames per second, which creates the “ghosting” effect you see below.

Oddly enough, Netflix isn’t the only streaming service that’s had trouble formatting old animation for streaming. Earlier this year, the new streaming service Disney+ had to reformat several episodes of The Simpsons that were being shown in the wrong aspect ratio. This is just another illustration of how the rapidly changing technology in animation is causing problems for platforms that want to maintain compatibility over several generations.

The good news, however, is that these issues are fixable. While it may take a bit of time and labor-intensive work on Netflix’s part, the streaming service should be able to fix this frame rate issue without too much hassle. Netflix has yet to issue any official statement on the problem; however, so it’s still unclear when viewers will get to see Legend of Korra again in all its animated glory. For anyone that doesn't want to wait, Legend of Korra is also available to stream on CBS All Access.

Darlene Caamano, Rebecca Sugar, Julia Pott, Sofía Alexander Lead Focus On Women In Animation At Pixelatl 2020

Pixelatl Festival, the Mexico-based meet-up for Latin American and global animation, is going virtual this year, but the shift hasn’t dented the caliber of the guestlist.

The speakers are a typically diverse bunch, with a twist: this edition (September 1–5) focuses on women in the animation industry. Otherwise, there’s little to unite them — they come from both Latin America and elsewhere, creative and executive backgrounds, industry and indie. The headline guests include:

  • Darlene Caamano — svp, Nickelodeon Movies
  • Jorge Gutiérrez — creator, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera; director, The Book of Life
  • Rebecca Sugar — creator, Steven Universe
  • Julia Pott — creator, Summer Camp Island
  • Sofía Alexander — creator, Onyx Equinox
  • Lois van Baarle — character designer and digital artist, Loish
  • Athena Portillo — vp for animation production at Lucasfilm
  • Casiopea — Mexican studio collective led by four women
  • Yingjue Chen — art director, Dreamworks Animation
  • Lorena Alvarez — Eisner-nominated comic artist from Colombia
  • Pete Michels — animation director, The Simpsons
  • Mike Hollingsworth — supervising director, Bojack Horseman

The focus on female talent extends to the rest of the program, which includes:

  • The presentation of MUMA (Women in the World of Animation, Mexico) as a chapter of WIA (Women in Animation) with Marge Dean, WIA president
  • Cartoon Network Latin America’s presentation of original IPs being developed in Mexico along with Cinema Fantasma, Axur Eneas (Mexico), Ricardo Scioville (Colombia), and Matisse Gonzalez (Bolivia)
  • Exclusive footage and the announcement of a new Cartoon Network IP being developed in Mexico
  • Presentation of pilot by Matisse Gonzalez, winner of Pixelatl’s #GirlPower pitching event (organized with Cartoon Network)
  • Laika’s 15th anniversary celebration with five department heads in individual panels with students and stop-motion-focused portfolio reviews
  • New award: Best Game of The Year for a Latin American Video Game
Christian Bermejo, the festival’s artistic director, tells Cartoon Brew that the focus on women was conscious from the start: “Even though the industry is overflowing with female talent, it is not always highlighted.” He adds that the line-up was broadly conceived before the pandemic shift, although the shift to virtual “has made it easier for people that are knee-deep into production to commit a couple of hours of their time to be part of Pixelatl.”

In a normal year, the event draws top talent from the animation, video game, vfx, and comics sectors to Cuernavaca, serving as a crucial bridge between artists from the region and overseas studios and production companies. Aside from the event proper, it also helps run the education conference La Cumbre, the Ideatoon bootcamp and pitching program, and Girl Power: Pitch Me the Future, another pitching event targeted at female creators.

This role as a nexus between Latin America and the rest of the world shapes the organizers’ choice of guests. “Pixelatl is all about connecting,” Bermejo tells Cartoon Brew. “We want to learn from different industries, territories, and profiles, and we want our guests to come and learn about Mexico and Latin America … So it is a subtle combination of attractive names to get the attention of the people, but it’s all about what they have to say and how they can connect with our Latin community.”

For more information about participating in this year’s edition, which is open to participants in any part of the world, head to the festival’s website, https://elfestival.mx/2020/en-US/landing.

Update (8/18) - Additionally, Nickelodeon Animation will host four talks and panels, from an artistic and business perspective, at Pixelatl 2020!

Apple reportedly is teaming with ViacomCBS for the first bundle tied to Apple TV Plus, which would offer a steep discount of about 50% for customers who buy CBS All Access and Showtime together, Variety reports.

Per a Bloomberg report, subscribers to Apple TV Plus (which costs $4.99) will be able to get both CBS All Access and Showtime streaming services for an additional $9.99 per month. That’s a bit less than half the price of subscribing to CBS All Access ($9.99 per month with no ads) and Showtime ($10.99 monthly) separately.

Apple and ViacomCBS reps declined to comment.

ViacomCBS stock closed up 1.7% Thursday, to $26.69 per share. Despite renewed speculation about what chairman Shari Redstone’s next move might be on the M&A front, the stock has not had a major move since the news of Sumner Redstone’s death on Aug. 12. The partnership with Apple is sure to be scrutinized by close observers of both companies.

The new bundle deal from Apple TV Plus with CBS All Access and Showtime could be introduced as soon as next Monday, Aug. 17, per Bloomberg.

At such a significant discount, ViacomCBS could see a significant uptake in streaming subscribers. The media conglomerate is planning to rebrand CBS All Access in early 2021, after adding big new tranche of content from ViacomCBS cable networks.

As of the end of the second quarter of 2020, CBS All Access and Showtime had a combined 16.2 million customers, up 20% from the prior quarter.

In reporting Q2 earnings, ViacomCBS detailed plans for a global streaming service. Set for an early 2021 launch, that would be geared around output deals with Showtime and CBS All Access along with a “super-sized” selection of content from brands including Nickelodeon, CBS, MTV, Comedy Central and some first-run Paramount films. Most recently, ViacomCBS announced that Nickelodeon's Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run will join the service during early 2021.

ViacomCBS already distributes both CBS All Access and Showtime through the Apple TV app’s channels feature that provides integrated access to third-party subscription programming (along with other services, although HBO recently dropped out of the lineup with the launch of HBO Max).

However, the bundled discount of CBS All Access and Showtime via Apple TV Plus — which so far includes only Apple original series and movies — is designed to boost buy-through of both Apple’s subscription service as well as ViacomCBS’s. The model would be similar to Amazon’s Prime Video Channels, which lets customers who pay for Prime subscribe to streaming services (including CBS All Access and Showtime) in an integrated interface.

According to an earlier report by Bloomberg, Apple is prepping a series of new discounted services bundles, with Apple TV Plus and Apple Music in the baseline tier. Those could launch as soon as October along with new iPhones and the launch of iOS 14, per the report.
