Could there a reboot of Nickelodeon's classic '90s gameshow Nick Arcade on the horizon?
While chatting with Josh Martinez on the Superstar Crossover podcast, WWE superstar Xavier Woods mentioned that he’d like to host a reboot of Nick Arcade, adding that - without saying too much - he may have already had talks with Paramount Global and Nickelodeon!
There was this show on Nickelodeon called Nick Arcade. I want to host the new Nick Arcade. That’s the big goal.
So without saying too much, I mean, we may have been talking. We may have been talking. But it’s always good to put the goals out there, keep yourself accountable.
Nick Arcade pitted two teams of two against each other, guiding the avatar Mikey around a game board. New squares could unlock trivia questions, puzzles, automatic points or, naturally, video game challenges. The games featured included classics such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Battletoads and Gradius 3. Nick Arcade turned out 84 episodes across two seasons in a run that lasted from January to November 1992, but lived a long afterlife in reruns. Hosted by Phil Moore, the series was filmed at Nickelodeon Studios at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.

Chicago’s favorite pop-up bar, Replay Lincoln Park, 2833 N. Sheffield, is bringing back some good ole’ childhood nostalgia with their latest pop up, Nick Arcade, opening Friday, June 11 just in time for the city’s Phase 5 reopening.
The pop up will offer an exclusive selection of Nick-inspired cocktails as well as a themed food menu for guests to enjoy as they travel down memory lane. Tickets are now available, and reservations are highly encouraged. Tickets available at https://www.exploretock.com/replay.
The Nick Arcade pop-up will feature a throwback to some of the best moments from childhood favorites, allowing patrons the opportunity to finally take a selfie that their 90’s selves could only dream about. Along with bright colored decor specific to each show, bubbles will be plentiful and let’s not forget about the slime. Pop up aficionados will also have the opportunity to treat themselves to 90’s themed cocktails, slime shots, along with their favorite childhood lunchroom treats.
Superfans who can’t wait to see the space, can RSVP for an exclusive first look the evening prior to opening, Thursday, June 10 between 5pm and Midnight. Guests can RSVP by emailing. Every patron who attendsthat evening and shows their vaccination card upon arrival will also receive a complimentary themed cocktail, Shea Coul-Ale or Fiji water. Valid only on Thursday, June 10 for those who RSVP.
The Nick Arcade inspired pop-up is 21+ after 7pm and costs $20 per person with a $20 beverage credit, for a 90-minute reservation. People under 21 will receive a commemorative t-shirt in place of the $20 drink credit. Covid-19 restrictions will be practiced and protocols will be strictly observed to ensure the safety of patrons and employees. Guests who show proof they have been fully vaccinated will be allowed to remove their masks.
“Our fans love opportunities that give them a chance to relive their childhood,” said Mark Kwiatkowski, owner of Replay Lincoln Park, via a press release. “This one is especially for the millennials looking to get back and enjoy the city officially reopening, and we’re looking forward to some much needed 90’s inspired fun this summer.”

The bar will transform all 9,000 square feet of their space, including their outdoor patio, into iconic spots inspired by 90’s Nickelodeon favorites including Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Are You Afraid of the Dark, CatDog, Doug, Rocko’s Modern Life and much more. Nickelodeon today (Jan. 29) announced the premiere of Tooned In, the network's brand new epic gameshow that puts contestants to the test to prove their animation knowledge. Although the competition series is new, it seems that it's based on a unaired pilot that Nickelodeon made over 20 years ago!
In Nickelodeon's new Tooned In series, an animated A.I. robot, Nicky (voiced by Rama Vallury, AOK), hosts a gameshow where kid contestants compete in a battle of Nickelodeon cartoon knowledge for the chance to be named the night’s big winner and take home exciting prizes. Each episode features three kids who must solve animation questions across slime-filled rounds of trivia until only one contestant is left in the competition. The final kid will then be declared the episode’s big winner and move on to a special prize round to compete against Nicky and climb the robot’s motherboard for a chance to win the $1,000 grand prize.
Soon after today's announcement, it was revealed that Tooned In may be based on older format! Although there's nothing strange about that, as older gameshow formats are revived all the time. However, Tooned In seems to be based on a pilot that never made it to air!
In the late '90s. Nickelodeon taped a pilot for a potential new show called Tooned In at Nickelodeon Studios at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, which also featured an animated host. Not much is known about the pilot - in fact, it's considered "Lost Media", with its only known footage being in a "Best of Nickelodeon Studios" sizzle reel (below, around the 3:38 mark)!
It's unknown whether both versions of Tooned In share anything in common, apart from the name and animated host aspect, but the new version of Tooned In does have another classic Nickelodeon connection: former Nickelodeon host Phil Moore (Nick Arcade, You're On!) serves as producer on the new series! It's not known whether Moore had any involvement in the original, but it certainly is a nice throwback!

Hosted by Phil Moore, Nick Arcade was part game show, part tournament, pitting two teams of two kids against each other through two initial trivia rounds, with the winner advancing to the "Video Zone" to play against the virtual "Video Game Wizard" of the day via green scene magic. Filmed at Nickelodeon Studios at Universal Studios Florida, the series ran for 84 episodes over two seasons in 1992, with re-runs occurring throughout most of the '90s and the mid-noughties on Nick and Nick GAS.
If you want a quick throwback to the '90s, Wrestling With Gaming has released a super short 22-minute-and-change documentary on their YouTube channel that quickly runs down the origins of the show and breaks down each facet of it in a very digestible way, providing factoids in the process, behind-the-scenes footage and briefly chatting with co-creator Karim Miteff.
There's a lot of great trivia here, like the rumor that someone at Nickelodeon ordered too many space camp trips, so they were given away as prizes on various network game shows, and that Nickelodeon was weary of the idea that Nintendo and Sega would consent to having their games featured on the show at the same time: only for the producers to solve the problem.
This show blew many fans' minds when it came out and was way ahead of its time: its legacy deserves to be preserved! As the doc hints it could still come back, thanks to the passion of WWE superstar Xavier Woods, who wants to host a new incarnation of the show. Legends of the Hidden Temple is coming back for Quibi, so there's a good chance we could see a Nick Arcade revival, too!

Of all the shows that made up Nickelodeon’s original early-90s programming block, perhaps none was more ambitious than Nick Arcade. Combining the elements of classic game shows with groundbreaking video technology, Nick Arcade offered contestants the chance to play inside a virtual world that, at the time, at least, dazzled adolescent viewers at home. How the creators managed to pull this off is the focus of a new documentary short from YouTubers Wrestling With Gaming.
As Nick Arcade co-creators Karim Miteff and James Bethea explain, the show’s success was due to a piece of software known as the Mandala. This was the technology that converted excitable pre-teens into interactive sprites that could interact with coins, switches, and enemies in the “Video Zone.” Looking back, these tense video game showdowns seem about as advanced as the technology used by your local weatherman, but at the time it was pretty cutting-edge stuff.
Ultimately, the blue screen magic behind the one was really just one part of what made Nick Arcade so special. Hyper-energetic host Phil Moore kept things entertaining during the most mundane trivia competitions. The “Video Challenge” segments, meanwhile, featured titles from Nintendo, Sega, and Neo Geo, which seems almost unimaginable in today’s climate of corporate competition. Even the losers got to go home with a comfortable pair of British Knights.
A relic of a bygone era that was still way ahead of its time, Nick Arcade remains firmly imprinted on the minds of TV viewers of a certain age. Given the massive increase in gaming-related entertainment, streaming, and virtual reality in the past five years, it seems like only a matter of time before we get some sort of a reboot.
For the most part, episode descriptions offer a vague synopsis of what you're going to be watching, and thus, can be a bit boring. But every now and then, there are magical episode descriptions written by someone who really cares. Which brings me to Amazon Video and the service's synopses for Nick Arcade, Nickelodeon's cult favorite game-centric show from the '90s.

The series has become a cult favorite amongst '90s Nick Kids, including with someone working behind-the-scenes at Amazon, who knows each episode well enough to have some fun with the synopses! As pointed out by freelancer writer Heidi Kemps on her Twitter account, the Nick Arcade descriptions are pure gold.
"A contestant named Nicole goes inside of a video game and has to jump over virtual rats in an attempt to win a set of encyclopedias. Host Phil Moore makes no attempt to convince her that it isn't worth the trouble," reads the synopsis of the first episode.
Each description gets steadily gets weirder and weirder, as the writer’s attention is quickly hijacked by Moore’s wardrobe choices:
“This does not necessarily speak to the content of this episode, but host Phil Moore wears a tremendous sweater in this episode. The pattern is mesmerizing and the cut is ahead of its time,” reads the description for episode four from season one.
"Host Phil Moore wears a shirt so baggy that a sharp gust would send him sailing into the sky. The contestants go inside a video game, where they are required to put on helmets and kneepads so they can safely steal digital bananas from virtual monkeys," says the description for episode seven of the first season.
Things go even further off the rails for the show’s second season, where the descriptions are entirely dedicated to Moore’s shirts and jeans, to the point where the episodes now carry Comedy Bang Bang-esque titles like, “Phil Moore Wears A Gold Shirt” and “Phil Moore Won’t Take Off The Gold Shirt.” All references to the actual show, or the kids ostensibly playing it, are gone; just demands that Moore bring back particular Hawaiian shirts that the writer liked. They are equally hilarious, however.

"Phil? Phil, what happened? The Hawaiian shirt is gone. You've got on this shiny gold number that isn't even tucked in, like you just rolled off your waterbed and onto the Nick Arcade set. Was it something we did? Please bring back the Hawaiian shirt," reads the synopsis for episode four of Season 2.
Each and every one of these is art - a micro-poem - and it would be brilliant to see this person, whether they work for Nickelodeon or Amazon, to write episode descriptions for more things. The anonymous writer’s descriptions/clothing reviews also appear on the show’s iTunes offerings, which suggests that these write-ups came from someone in the Nickelodeon/Viacom corporate structure.
Its also great to see Moore—who’s currently working on a modern revival of the show, titled Battle Arcade—is being good sport about it all:

'90s Nickelodeon fans may remember Phil Moore's days hosting the hit Nickelodeon game show Nick Arcade.
What you might not know is that he's a Baltimore native and went to school with WBAL NewsRadio 1090 AM's own C4, going back to Hilton Elementary through Polytechnic. He's back in town this week for the video game convention MAGFest in National Harbor, where muscle memory will guide him as the emcee of MAGFest Versus. He's also set to do some panels and take some questions about his time on Nickelodeon.
Moore, whose family is still around town, popped in to chat with his old friend Tuesday as he talked about how he fell into comedy and the weirdness of complete strangers walking up and saying they grew up with him.
His journey to Nickelodeon Studios began when he was on strike and picketing with his AT&T coworkers in Orlando. He was cracking some jokes with coworkers, which led to him quitting his job and disregarding his engineering degree to try his hand at stand-up.
"I had no plan. Nothing was on the agenda. So you never know when life is never going to make a turn," Moore said.

"People have evolved. People have grown. This little show that I did, I literally called it like The Cinderella Show," Moore said. "My show was the show that has absolutely no merchandise you can buy."
Most pictures from the set are blurry, he said, because they never had a photographer either.
After Nickelodeon, he moved behind the camera, writing and producing. He still comes to town every now and then, though, and he's always ready to reach into his so-called "Baltimore drawer."
"I've got my gloves, my hats, I got my scarves, I got my thermal underwears," he joked. "Like 1966 Batman, man, I always come prepared."

Old school Turtles fans got a nice little push down nostalgia lane a little while back when it was reported that Raw Thrills was bringing the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise back to the arcade, for the first time in well over two decades. And like the Konami games of old, it’s all about beat-em-up action with up to four players, taking on everyone from the Shredder to Krang to other ne’er-do-wells.
The game recently got a showcase at the IAAPA 2017 event, with attendees being able to try it out before its distribution kicks off sometime early next year. According to Arcade Heroes, it definitely lives up the hype of the original game.
“From what I have played and watched, it fulfills those expectations,” the attendee noted in his report. “The game is a beat ’em up just like you would want it to be. Yes that does mean more button mashing than stratagem but that’s part of the charm. The turtles will also do different attacks such as throws and there are items to grab and use such as smoke bombs, shurikens, trash cans, one that makes you spin around in a kind of tornado attack, etc. There are plenty of enemies to duke it out with, there is interaction with your environment, multiple attacks including the ability to throw enemies into the screen, special ‘Turtle Power’ attacks which behave as quick cut scenes, big boss battles, combo tracking, items to use and more. Admittedly it is weird to play a TMNT game that doesn’t have the voices for the characters that I grew up with but that’s ‘old man – get off my lawn as I remember it’ syndrome there.”
The reporter also noted that "Beat ’em up fans can also take heart that the Raw Thrills development team stated that they played a number of classic beat’ em ups as they designed this to 'get the feel right'. Apart from playing the original TMNT Konami titles, they specifically mentioned 'Final, Fight, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Double Dragon' while also implying that they played through several others."
The team also captured some Turtley Awesome footage from the game, which can be found in the video below.
First up is a clip that appears to be taking place in the Technodrome, where the Turtles find themselves at odds with Foot Clan members and other automated terrors.
Arcade Heroes also managed to get some closer footage of the game’s first stage, which takes place in New York City. While it sets up some impressive beat-em-up action, fans may wonder: "when did Bebop become so skinny and able to turn himself invisible? And is Rocksteady a Russian now? Maybe we missed something". Whatever the case, it’s great to see the Turtles back in action.
"The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game brings back everything you loved about the classic version (4-player co-op action, crisp graphics, sweet ninja moves) and adds a few new twists like a special “Turtle Power” super power mode. Michelangelo, Raphael, Donatello, and Leonardo may be back to battle some of the same villains you remember from the past (Rocksteady, Krang, etc.), along with a few new surprises from the new Nickelodeon cartoon. You can grab stuff, throw ninja stars, and, of course heal yourself by eating pizza. Currently there’s only a handful of levels and the villainous Shredder was noticeable absent, but the game is not fully finished yet, so no word on whether or not there will be other levels in the final version."
"Gone is the 25″ CRT Monitor. Instead, a giant flat-panel screen presents crisp graphics surrounded by color-changing LEDs in a slick new cabinet design that will make itself stand out in any family entertainment center and totally immerse you in the action. While Raw Thrills has continued to make some of the best new games out there (Jurassic Park, Cruis’n Blast, etc), this is one of the first I can remember that isn’t a driver or a shooter. Arcade cabinet maker Raw Thrills has revealed that it is currently working on a new machine featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
The new game is being built from scratch with new assets to mirror the Nickelodeon's current CG-animated TMNT series and with an eye toward modernizing the genre past Turtle games hailed from. Raw Thrills told Arcade Heores “This new version of TMNT is a completely new re-imagining of the brawler concept. There are more moves, more environmental interaction, cool Turtle Power special attacks, voiceover from the entire cast (including Seth Green and others)… it’s really amazing.”
RT added that the company has been working to create novel forms of entertainment, particularly something multiplayer that brings four people close to each other, working together to play through the game and defeat bosses.
Fans of a certain age may have fond memories of playing Konami’s 1989 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles beat-’em-up arcade game. It was based off the hit original cartoon which began airing thirty years ago and later ported to the NES. It was a brutal coin-eater, especially if you played alone, but helped pave the way for a follow-up, Turtles in Time.
The new cabinets will use HD screens and measure about nine feet tall and four and a half feet across. The game will be a scrolling brawler and promises more depth than brawlers of yore, with an emphasis on environmental attacks and team-up moves. It will also similar control style of the original games and will feature fast-paced four-player action. The cabinet will feature a joystick for each player and attack buttons. However, instead of two buttons, there are three, indicating that the third button could be for some kind of special move.
Raw Thrills is planning to demo the game at this year’s International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) expo in Orlando, Florida mid-November, for distribution in arcades sometime in 2018.
The new TNMT cabinets are just one in a long line of arcade-based revivals Raw Thrills has released over the last decade. The company entered the business in the early 2000's, with gambling games for bars before moving onto movie adaptations like The Fast and the Furious arcade adaptation. After that they moved onto collaborate with Konami on Guitar Hero Arcade and later teamed up with Specular Interactive to produce a sequel to the 90s speedboat racer Hydro Thunder. Raw Thrills are also behind such games as Batman: The Arcade Game and H2Overdrive.
Just this year, the company began testing an Injustice arcade cabinet adaptation, Injustice Arcade, that re-creates NetherRealm’s fighting game with a card collecting element.
There’s no exact word on when the game will be available in arcades, but considering it’s just about ready for a convention debut, fans are probably not too far off. Get your quarters and pizza ready, because this game could likely make you say Booyakasha!
